I think when it comes to British literature classes, I'm just going to watch the videos instead. Because much as I love reading, these works take a lot out of you and much time to complete.
Pretty bad story on its own, also containing the "he/she did his/her best searching for X, but after Y time he/she didn't find it, only for X to appear before him/her at the end under some conditions" cliche, but if the purpose is to showcase her (The Wife of Bath) morality, then I believe that the story does a very good job.
You are judging a 700-year-old tale in the modern light. It's very possible that this tale in particular was one of the things to initiate that cliche. Forgetting that, cliches are cliches because they're entertaining and worked.
