      Awesome! When you start noticing these things, your reading start getting to a higher level of comprehension. That's when you start really getting into the author's "mind" and understanding the nuances.

    I read mostly for entertainment, however, I adore writing informative and persuasive articles. I just started an English Comp class in college and this is what I am currently struggling through. After coming to an understanding of the topic I realized I’ve been doing these naturally in my own writing. Thank you so much for your help!

    • @snaplanguage

      I'm glad you found the video useful! ... I believe most of the word- and language-structure choices we make are subconscious. Understanding how words and structures affect the tone gives writers an additional communication tool. When I revise my writing, for example, I try to be aware of how I can use this tool to communicate exactly what I want to communicate.
      Good luck with your studies! :D

    Well...A language gives you many options. Technical and scientific text is written in a very specific form and tone, which must be read actively and critically. Thank you will help me understand . Hugs!!!!

    • @snaplanguage

      Exactly! If an author uses an unexpected tone, that discrepancy can be part of the message (unless it's by a bad writer lol)

      As for a list of tones, it is simply any imaginable adjective describing human emotions. Take for example, "angry." Now think of any nuance of anger... So you can have an angry tone or an irritated, furious, outraged, choleric tone...

      Hi, Ashik. It is not always easy to understand the tone, but you can get better with practice if you pay attention to the emotional content of words being used --- especially in poems, where writers love to "manipulate the language" to create an effect. - Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. :D

    While i love your videos, I am thoroughly confused with POV taught as first person, third person etc and then this. Could you please help clear the doubt?

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  6 років тому +1

      Thank you for this interesting question! The way you are using it your question, POV is a bit different from the way we refer to "the author's viewpoint" in these videos. Viewpoint, as we used here, has to do with your preconceptions or biases about the topic. The way you use POV in your comment, you can refer to it as the "narrative voice."
      Using the first (I), second (you) or third person (he, she, it) can change how we perceive the message in subtle ways.
      For example, if I use the first person when I write, the message becomes more personal. Along these lines, writing in the second person, it's as if the author were speaking directly to me. With the third person, the author distances themselves from the message; they become observers. This is what I can provide off hand on this complex topic. For more information, take a look at this (long) article that you may use as a starting point: www.scribendi.com/advice/narrative_voice.en.html

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  3 роки тому +1

      A neutral tone is one where the writer does shows neither a positive nor a negative position. It's when you simply state facts. Neutral tones are sometimes difficult to express because human beings very often have a position on issues.
      Cheers! :D

    But how do I know which word going with which tone? Is there a place I can research for it? Dictionaries only tell me the definitions of the word.

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  2 роки тому

      You just need to know the deeper meaning of certain words. For example, if someone is describe as skinny versus slim, the first description has a more negative connotation than the other. I don't know of any sources that give that level of detail. Sometimes a dictionary will tell you that a word is "rude" or "profane" but, if those descriptions are not there, you just have to know how the word is used in the language.

    Can you make a video using "Unlocking of unfamiliar words"?

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  5 років тому +1

      Hi! Thanks for the question, though I am not sure exactly what you mean by "unlocking unfamiliar words." We do have two videos about using context clues to guess the meaning of unknown words while you are reading. If that is what you meant, check out ua-cam.com/video/WEPFNL0DwT0/v-deo.html (part 1) and ua-cam.com/video/gr1SvtU0DOI/v-deo.html (part 2). The important things to remember is that (1) you can improve your vocabulary by reading a lot, though you should focus primarily on understanding what you are reading rather than focusing too much on vocabulary; and (2) improving your vocabulary takes time--in fact, it is a lifelong process.
      Thanks again for the question! I hope you are enjoying the channel!

    Thought about doing a video on MLA ( Modern Language Associate)?

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  6 років тому +1

      Hi, Donna. Thanks for watching our videos and leaving comments. I did think about going into MLA style but I quickly decided not to. The style is sometimes revised without warning, which means the video would then become dated. It is also difficult to decide on how detailed a video would have to be--some people need just the very basic stuff... others might want more nuances.
      Thanks for the suggestion, though!

      Sure. As explained in the video, you deliver a message + the tone (which delivers how the message is intended). So, the tone could be *any number of human emotions or intents delivered along with the message. You can have a resentful, passionate, impassionate, pretentious, frightening, soothing, forceful, gentle, harsh, depressing, urgent, rigid, formal, informal, pessimistic, optimistic, tense, relaxed, uplifting, assertive, sulking, tentative, sarcastic, judgmental, entertaining, dull, regretful, belligerent, admiring, acerbic, imploring, irreverent, joyful, sympathetic, apathetic, indignant, scathing, forgiving, ironic, vindictive, apologetic, worried, critical, docile, friendly, unfriendly, enthusiastic excited, facetious, mocking, persuasive, witty, humorous tone, and so on. (These are just a few that came to mind.)

    What does elucidated mean? Can I become a writer with only a tenth grade education? I know that there are ceo's of their own companies that dropped out of highschool and, are very successful. Who was that writer who was a big gin drinker? Oh well just saying, "keeping it real."

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  Рік тому

      To elucidate means to make something clear/to explain. It has the root "lucid" in it, which has to do with "light" (so, to cast light on something).
      People learn to write in many situations. Going to school is only one of them.
      Doroty Parker? Ernest Hemingway? Many writers enjoyed a bit of alcohol...

      That's because when you read, you cannot literally hear the writer's tone... so you need to use the written words to extract the tone from the text. :D
