If you watch her facial expressions, you can see really immerses herself in the lyrics. It's as if she's sitting in the diner taking it all in at that moment. I love the a cappella original, but this is a great version.
@Bélus Béla when I saw this I looked up one of her old videos. Apart from the 80s mullet he looks exactly the same and always brought that vibe to his playing. It made me smile seeing someone who still loves his work.
I can't say that I was a huge fan of this song when it came out. But it's incredibly well-written. Her voice is so natural, and the lyrics are so mundane, but everything fits so well together.
This reminds me of when i was young and things were gonna be alright. I miss the 90's... i hate my old life now. Its the end of the world... but replaying this song brings me back to the good ole days.
@@thylacinen4874 Correct, these are poor guys, if they hate their life. LIfe is always nice, if you do the right decissions on your own instead of following others....
Wish they would get creative like Suzanne Vega did in the early 90's- I remember loving the funky style of the narrative and the catchy "da da da da- da da da da-da da da da da da da da"
wonder if she normally avoids party's because everyone will ask her for that one thing XD . she played also a very important role in the development of mp3 . made quite some history with that one song :*D
Two things.. Far too much tension in that room. I think this song also needs more variation.. and that's probably what creates more tension in a crowd (i.e.; It gets old).
@M. Jones - Well at least I wouldn't go as far as saying the song is flawed. It just seems a bit too abstract because it lacks variation. All I know is, I'd hate to be one of those musicians playing it ! Far too much tension for me..
I just saw her at Sellersville theater in PA last week with the same guitarist. Her voice is somehow better than ever. And believe me, she has at least a dozen song's better than this. It was just a popular dance mix - thats all. The only thing I like about this song is her sexy delivery. But she's the best female songwriter of last 25 years - period. ...........Nice to see Greg Brady got a job on Bass :)
William Holden died November 12, 1981. Probably written on Friday the 13th. Released 6 years later in 1987. Became a big hit 10 years later when remixed by DNA in 1992. Tom's Restaurant is most famous for being in Seinfeld and being the first song recorded as an MP3 as a test. Tom's Restaurant was also Edwin Armstrong's lab, Armstrong was a Columbia University inventor of FM Radio.
Any chance that any bass players that see this could give me a transcription of the basic bass line? I don't need all the fills. My ear is not that great yet and trying to watch his fingers hasn't worked for me yet. Thanks.
@FlameHue I have none. At least not in my head. In your head huh? That really made me laugh. Good for you. How about voices? How many do you have in your head? What are they telling you? haha
@bitulok3131 Sometimes there are voices in my head, and they all sound like my own voice, but I think they are different individuals. They tell me things and I don't know whom to trust. One of them is telling me to jump, but it's 40 storeys below. You see my dilemma?
Why didn't dude drop that sic base line, and why did they not have beats to this? Guess they wanted to make it all artsy and shit, but the hip hop angle fused with the folk acapella is what made this song special. :(
Wally Schroeder Because that version you’re referring to was actually a remix by the British duo DNA in 1990, a few years after Suzanne Vega’s original version. So I guess she’s performing a “remix” of a remix of her own original song? hehe
No, she has many great songs, it's just that people are too lazy to find out about them. Try Gypsy, Ironbound / Fancy Poultry, Institution Green, Small Blue Thing, In Liverpool...
If you watch her facial expressions, you can see really immerses herself in the lyrics. It's as if she's sitting in the diner taking it all in at that moment. I love the a cappella original, but this is a great version.
The base guitarist is so cool. Full of character. He steals the show. 👍
Guy on the bass loves his job. I want his job lol.
i dunno if he is playing the bass or the bass is playing him XD
Oh Yeah
@Bélus Béla when I saw this I looked up one of her old videos. Apart from the 80s mullet he looks exactly the same and always brought that vibe to his playing. It made me smile seeing someone who still loves his work.
@Bélus Béla I would LOOOOVE to see her live. I've never seen Suzanne perform in person, but every clip I see of her is captivating.
Loved the bass guitarist. Loved his expression.
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PERSON HER VOICE IS GOLD
Yeah!! she drinks milk always!!! this is good!!

Still sounds good after all this years.

dude same...crazy how music or a song can do that
Guys if u were young in the 90's you can't be that old now !
There's much more to come.
@@thylacinen4874 Correct, these are poor guys, if they hate their life. LIfe is always nice, if you do the right decissions on your own instead of following others....
Life is a blessing anytime; but I do miss the 90's too .
It'll be ok
briliant as always, every arrangements rocks.man, that bass!
The melody and voice that have become legendary
Watching in 2020 in the times of coronavirus...
i think this might be my new favorite version of the song
Maaaan I Love This Lady
This is the most earworm song ever for me. I hear her chorus in my head randomly and make up dopey lyrics for mundane tasks or fantastical stories.
This is the song of my childhood... It's about of New York morning...
Special talent beyond a speck of reproach. Perfection
Borders books used to have live shows...they were cool
love this beat and the lyrics
Dang. This is good.
若い頃にラジオか有線でよく流れていて、歌詞は判らないけど声と曲調が好きだった。

amazing performance
Suzanne Vega owned ASMR before it was even a thing.
PLAY THAT BASS BROTHA
Espectacular esta canción me hizo moverme a cual mas con un ritmo coordinado y especial , viva por siempre.

Such a velvety voice.
Really like this.. she's hip as sh!t..
Ms Vega is the definition of genuine sublime cool.
bass kicking arse
Gerry Leonard is a magician and Suzanne is a Queen
😞I miss those days.
La beauté n'a pas d'âge, elle te transporte, comme un enfant sur un nuage...
I love her.
Слушаю -- это моя молодость. Как легко всё вспомнить. Спасибо.
she is beautiful
found this video 'cause I remembered this line:)
This could be the best version of this song of hers tbh
Nice story, always loved this song.
I'm glad she's not lipsyncing

Pre requisite for the bass player to put a bass face. Well done man.
by the way this is 80's really! late 80's, am I right? anyone there born 1968 like me? Gosh I feel old!
Susannah Andrews Suzanne originally recorded the song in 1984. DNA ‘redid’ the song in 1990with the dance beat added.
William Holden died November 12, 1981. Probably written on Friday the 13th. Released 6 years later in 1987. Became a big hit 10 years later when remixed by DNA in 1992.

What is it that makes this song so captivating?😊

In a way, I liked this mellow version of the song better than the mass released version.
I am Luka..I love you my Suzanne xx
@bitulok3131 I have over 63 songs, and they are all in my head. They will die with me when my life ends. So, how many fucking songs do you have?
Right now 66
Funky!!!
Sounds like Pink Floyd's version of this song. This is only my opinion, maybe that's because of the spacey atmosphere
@FlameHue

Hahahahahaha that was great. Greater than her post, though her post was great too
This crowd is awful! Suzanne and the two guys rock though.
@FlameHue
Ok. Lets say it is. How about you? how many songs do you have?
Rip to good music!
Please vocal women come out...we need you. I mean it.

Non-sense. The bass line they used here is the most solid reminder to the old version.
And it really shreds.

The original was acapella
Which store location?
Tom's restaurant, NY.

Who are the other musicians?
Gerry Leonard is the guitar player. He did her NPR tiny desk concert with her.
Nah, sorry. But always nice to see you.
not as depressing as people going to rave taking drugs all the time!
Susannah Andrews sweet generalization, breh
