Subtraction is like taking something away. Imagine you have 5 apples, and you give 2 to a friend. Now you have 3 apples left. That’s subtraction!
We write it like this:
5 - 2 = 3
In this example:
5 is the number you start with,
2 is what you take away, and
3 is what you have left.
Subtraction helps us find out how much is left or how much we need to add to make things equal.
