- A discussion on words that rhyme with "orange" (the surname Gorringe) turns hilarious when Stephen Fry reveals he had a tailor for his prep school uniform.
Taken from QI B episode 1 - Blue
I love the look of desperation to end this bit when he says "Well anyway Gorringe is a splendid English surname"
god I love Bill Baileys immediate reaction at 0:15, like he just knows this is going to be a hilarious bit
Bill and Sean couldn't believe the goldmine of jokes they had just hit upon
"Prep school tailor"?! He just sets himself up for these things.
He probably meant to say "prep school outfitters," which would have been correct but unfunny.
DieFlabbergast, oh, I’m pretty sure he meant tailor.
@Matt S I completely and utterly agree. Stephen sure can be very funny and entertaining but he comes across or maybe is an absolutey arrogant, condescending asshole.
@Matt S poppycock. He was just talking about his childhood while forgetting momentarily it was different from others. Get over yourself
I think he's well aware of the posh or upper class aspects of his personality and on some level (maybe subconsciously) plays up to it knowing it provides the others with good comedy material. Let's not forget that Stephen Fry is also a comedian and he knows what's funny. It is darn funny 😂
Would sir like to wear a cravate on the cross country run? 😂
Would Sir like to wear a Cravate on the cross country run? LMAO!!!
*Cravat*
I don't think anyone takes the piss out of Stephen's poshness quite as well as Sean Lock does.
nah Phil Jupitus is better
Most people seem to think Phill's best for it but Sean comes out with some absolute belters. "Mellors, winch me up!" and "Tarquin, I've got one!" spring to mind.
Testa Rossa250 p
Phil and Bill are the best they always have Stephen in stitches, i can imagine Sean was a school bully, because he just goes in for the kill
Szaam Phil Jupitus and Bill Bailey do a fine job as well
Rapidly approaching a decade later, and this still is possibly one of my favourite moments ever.
Pantheon Baker what about the Acropolis where the Parthenon iiiiiis?)))
One of the best things on this show. 3 working class blokes taking the piss out of a posh toff. It’s even better that Stephen realises his mistake straight away and can be heard muttering “oh why did I….” But then the onslaught continues. Stephen keeps trying to press on with the next segment but these lot are like a pack of lions with a wounded zebra.
Ironically Fry isn't as 'posh' as he can appear. He certainly wasn't raised in salubrious circumstances. And his school years were less than successful. But all that matters not a jot,he's just a delight.
"Would sir like a cravat on the cross country run" - priceless.
"Which side does young Sir dress on?" is just the best!
The really funny part is how 90% of people have no idea what that means.
Not being a native speaker, I had to do an extensive google search to get it, and now that I understand it, both this and the "toilet-wall" remark leave me baffled at the intelligence of this multi-layered joke.
@@xonxt pls explain
When I heard him say "Gorringe" the first time it felt like my name being called out on the register on the first day of school.
i love how in QI when the guests find out something hilarious about Stephen they all jump at the chance to take the piss out of him xD
The look on Bill Bailey's face at 0:10 when Stephen explains his tailor hahahahaha, oh lordy
Which is why when I imagine Willikins (from Sir Samuel Vimes' butler in Discworld) "smooth as silk, fat as butter and with a past that shows whenever he carves the turkey" I always get Fry's face. It is immaterial how posh he really is, he looks the part so much that you might as well have his picture in the dictionary entry for "posh" ^_^
'You're all such beasts!!'
Sean Lock at his finest. RIP.
I just love how much of a good sport Stephen is when getting messed with by the various guests teasing him for being so "proper"... and Phil Jupitus has got to have at least the close-second for best "mess with Stephen" record.
This and the beer goggles are some of my favourite "poking fun at Stephen" moments
Sean was having a grand time. So nice to see him laugh like that
He says "I say, I rather like this pink polenta": he is making a reference to a joke he made earlier in the episode.
Nothing begining "It was probably from the same root as Goerring" is going to end well
I SAY!!
"I suggest a cummerbund for geography!" I miss Sean so much already...
I say! I do rather like this pink polentah!
I love it when they tease Stephen on being really smart and posh!
"I suggest a cummerband for geography"
I had to look up "cummerband". I have so failed Poshness 101.
Thank you! Haha I heard it as "colour band" and was wondering what the hell he meant!!
Great banter from Jo Brand
i LOVE this one
Oh man too funny. Jo is actually crying with laughter ahaha
I wore hand-me-downs and thrift store clothes. Still scored top of the class and tested "gifted." Money didn't make him smart but it did give him a nice head start.
"I shall measure up young sir" gets me every time but I'm still struggling to understand whan Alan Davies says at the very end "I say, we're rather like this ???" :)
You have to see the full episode.
Pink polenta
Brilliant piece of ad hoc comedy
@SleepyChocolateNinja It would be a pretty stupid career move, wouldn't it? You just gotta adore the guy and the fact that he's out and gay and it's no particular issue for his public makes me love him even more.
@SlappaDeBassMon Trust me she's not the only one. Poor Stephen, for all his cleverness he still walks right into it at times.
Best punchline ever.
@issyvoo2 It's a British custom, even amongst liberal types, to joke about people who went to posh public schools (bearing in mind their gender segregation policies) in a borderline-homophobic manner. And to be fair, Stephen himself does his share of it.
Great Scene
You mean the roomful of people laughing their arses off?
Cripes, lol, that reference went way over my head I fear.I have no knowledge of this Discworld of which you speak...unless you refer to Terry Pratchett's Discworld &,again,I have no knowledge of that.I'll bow to your superior knowledge. :-)
@mooneepondskid
True, but then he went onto greatness. And lets be fair.. he is quite wonderfully posh and intelligent!
@Orlabobz True, but of the regulars I'm pretty sure Stephen is the only one who has been to prison.
Rip Sean lock!!!
Stephen should have known better than to mention his tailor.
Audio desync problem fixed
hahahaha... fantastic
Bill Bailey out of fucking nowhere!
In what way did Stephen Fry not grow up in circumstances conducive to good health?
Jo Brand had nothing to say.
I have. In what way was his upbringing not salubrious?
Read his books.
my primary school had an outfitters that did almost all the private schools in the south london area
I came from boyinaband
Which side does young sir dress on? oh, lol. :)
What's a polenta?
It's from an earlier joke in the episode about how the food polenta was coloured by grinding insects into the polenta (by accident).
@issyvoo2 Sometimes there is the odd comment or joke, but it's obvious that its very light hearted and jokey with no offence intended. To be perfectly honest, I doubt that many of the people who appear on the show would be willing to risk their careers saying something like that to Stephen.
Really? I think not.
I think you need to read the definition of "salubrious". I would describe the vast majority of Britons today as living in relatively salubrious circumstances, with Fry's upbringing being more so than most.
Why? (I'm not english. XD)
@NormanAngle Do they tease him for being gay? I haven't noticed that. I hope not. That would bother me. They all sometimes make sexual jokes, including him. Some are gay and some are straight.
Sad times when you watch Bill Bailey the best comedian in the world scrabble to include his pipe joke.
