Back Country Riding In Wolf Territory | Los Picos de Urbion

- This was day one of a three day road trip organised by Norvink Caravans (link below). We were heading to Los Picos de Urbion in La Rioja, Spain.
While I've ridden in La Rioja on previous occasions, I'd never been here...and it promised to be brutal, untouched terrain. There are no marked mountain bike trails, in fact there are no marked trails of any kind. This is Wolf country, real wolf country where all the animals on the mountain are guarded 24 hours a day by the hugely impressive and somewhat scary Spanish Mastin.
The Mastin has been protecting Spanish livestock for centuries and has no problem with fighting off wolves. The problem for us is that they're are really protective about "their" territory. You have to be alert and ready to put down some serious watts very quickly...
We stayed in a village called Viniegra de Arriba, which sits at 1,181m. With only a handful of families living there all year round I quickly fell in love with the friendliness of the locals. Everyone came to say hello, offered to help us fix our bikes and even let us charge our batteries and wash our bikes!
We couldn't have chosen a better base camp to start our three day adventure. And if you're looking to plan your own mountain bike adventure in Spain, you won't find much better than Los Picos de Urbion.

Beautiful ride! The dogs would worry me too! Looked so worth it though. Thanks
It was truly spectacular. Would love to return.
that looks absolutely amazing Nathan. even the thought of being out there with the likes of wolves and wild dogs would be adrenaline enough without the descend. good work
It was stunning Victor. While the dogs were an adrenaline rush, I'll take.the descents any day of the week 😂
Nathan, your video's are fast becoming my go to MTB video's to watch...keep them coming and all the best for the future.
Wow! Thanks Andrew that's very kind of you man. Really appreciate it 🙌
Nice to see your spirit lifted. Live to ride, ride to live! :)
Cheers Paul. I was truly lifted on this ride. Unbelievable.
Oh I so can’t wait for the next instalment! Loved this one!
Thanks Julia. Glad you enjoyed it so much.
Looks like a great place to ride and explore, and the wolf's and wolfhounds add a hope other dynamic haha 🤘
Haha I was more worried about the dogs than the wolves 😂. A truly stunning place to ride
That looked absolutely awesome!! Apart from the dogs part😬
Cheers Mitch. The were several encounters with dogs. They're just doing their job I guess. We do look like wolves after all.
Nathan, Fantastic Footage man as well the intro with the drone bloody great. Open country riding that what MTB is all bout , just a bit scary with the big dog chasing you guy's ......
Cheers B
Cheers man. It really was an awesome place to explore. A real feeling of adventure... Especially with the dogs after us every half an hour 😂
Bloody awesome that!!!! Beautiful
Cheers Anton. It's a stunning place for sure!
What a place to ride a bike!
It certainly is Mark!
Wait a minute, Spain is gorgeous!!! What an amazing ride, that's what ebikes are for, to go farther and longer to where no bike has gone before!
Your excitement was contagious! Thank you for sharing.
Spain is gorgeous!!! Glad you enjoyed the video Philippe and thanks for watching!!! ps. I was a little excited 😂
I live in Utah and will be visiting my parents in Perpignan France first week of September, it's just 2 hours away from Barcelona. After seeing your video a while back of Spanish Utah, I was dying to ride it but I won't have time to drive over there. Is there any trails around Barcelona you would recommend? Traiforks is not showing me anything.
I dont know about Barcelona but you have Berga in the Catalonian Pyrenees. Check out Berga Enduro: ua-cam.com/channels/yWWOX2f168mls1K9OgBKXA.html
Glad to hear you so stoked, great video.
Cheers Andy. There was no way to hide it on this ride. 🤘
@@SenderoSeeker looked like a great day. 🙂
💪
Mental trail..that you had to make up 👍 didnt see much current trail up top ..perfect vid Nathan ..Welcome Back !!!!
Thanks Andrew. Ye, it was part make it up as you go, part intuition and part gpx.
Wow that was truly spectacular riding and scenery Nathan, love it! It must be really scary negotiating those dogs knowing what they're there for, it'd give you an extra adrenaline boost for sure!!! Tremendous video, thanks.
Haha. Ye, those bikes certainly went straight into Boost that's for sure. We saw about 5 or 6 groups of them over the course of the 3 days. Most were fine, but I'm always wary. The place is beyond belief. I was in awe every minute we were there. Even the locals were fantastic. I can definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a real get away from it all location.
I think the local tourist board should be employing you, you're definitely showcasing the area in the video, it looks amazing. Looking forward to the next installment.
Thanks Chris, that's very kind. A few people have made this comment about other areas. Could be food for thought... 🤔
Holy Crap Nathan! Epic ride!
Cheers Dave. It felt pretty epic at the time
uh yeah! Great video and a lot of fun! I love ebikes! :)
Jeje. Vicioso! It was great fun Hector!
I just need a camper van now. Cabron. 😂
What an edit mate. I can appreciate this both from a riders perspective and and editing perspective. The production on this is really impressive. The intro in combination with the drone footage really does elevate this video to a high level. You should have 10 times the subscribers you currently have! Well done mate. This single video is an achievement in itself.
Wow, thanks so much. 10.000 subs seems like an impossibility right now...but you never know. I feel that the video didn't do justice to the ride to be honest, but I always feel that about slower paced videos. Not every trail is full on in the speed department, so I find it tricky to get the same high from the end result. Do you find this to be the case with your any of your videos?
Cheers.
@@SenderoSeeker I feel exactly the same. I am dropping an edit tonight which was a really epic ride however it was ridden at 'first time' pace. Personally it feels like I haven't done it justice. I also really struggle to know how much to cut out. Younwant to engage the viewer without diluting the ride too much. Not easy!
P.s. 1000 subs seems like an impossibility to me! 😂
I feel ya. My first edit is usually 50% longer than the final version. I am quite brutal with the edits, but there are always parts you're never 100% with. I also think that some videos just come together more naturally and rides that you thought were a bit meh, come across much better in video :) Will check out the new edit. And the way you're going with your schedule, you'll get to 1000 in no time.
@@SenderoSeeker thank you. Appreciate the positivity mate 👍
Glad you are back mate super vid i wil go with Andrew on this one keep up the goed werk.
Thanks Wil. Glad to be back 🤘
This was one of the most beautiful places I've ridden so far. Completely untouched. Over the three days we saw ZERO mountain bikers. It was just us.
The wonders of exploring 💪
Great edit! Nice to see you riding La Rioja hidden enduro trails, I'm waiting for your next video through the Urbión trail!
Thanks Alberto, I really had a great time here. A truly spectacular part of Spain.
Wooooaaaaahhh, brutal!! This video spread good vibes and really funny moments! Love It!
Ye man. It was such a great day. An awesome place to ride with a great couple of riding buddies.
Amazing Nathan!!! What a place!!! I know the E-Bike is not your favourite ride, but man, It lets you get some awesome places. Im not getting one anyways 😂 At least in a short term...
Haha. Not my favourite but it sure does take me to some special places. Picos de Urbion is quite possibly the most spectacular place so far. Awesome!
@@SenderoSeeker I was hiking at La Laguna Negra last summer and I gotta go back with more time.
do it!
I don't care scary ANYBODY says. e Bikes are amazing machines. The route looks OK too 👌
Haha. The route want too shabby. 💪
