    Built in 1969 this stack was supposed to merge Interstate I-84 and Interstate 291 but the second Highway never came through. It sat idle until the early 90s when part of it was utilized. Now 50 years later three quarters of this four level stack sits unused to this day. It is a canvas for local graffiti and taggers, but it is fantastic for Urban explorers and photographers alike. Definitely a great explore that is full of our state's local history. Good or bad..
    Thank you for watching, get out there and DISCOVER YOUR WORLD you never know what beautiful history you might find right in your backyard.

    This brings back memories. Worked for O&G the summer of 1970 on the lower section of I84 pouring concrete among other odd jobs, They had their concrete plant right on the job site. They had open cement dump trucks with a big mixer,fill it up then send it off to the cement spreader on rails to lay the road. The bridges were halted back then and we did some final work to the drainage tunnels in the area. Sad to see it after so many years. Thanks

      Thank you for your reply on this. I find that really cool that you actually did some work on that.
      It was a beautiful project and from what I understand was the state's first four stack interchange, may even be the only 4 stack interchange in Connecticut?
      It would be a hell of an interchange even for today's Connecticut Highway standards.
      From what I read, the new highway would have been to close in proximity to the West Hartford Reservoir.
      I like anyting old or abandoned, but this place is unique because it's still got the original concrete, guardrails and everything else. Didn't get used and worn out to be repaved with asphalt like everything else. Just a cool little window into yesterday!!

    As someone who lives in Connecticut, this and the partially abandoned Route 11 fascinates me. Even though they’ll never do this, and this comment will age like milk, I wish they could find a purpose to use these structures.

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  2 роки тому +1

      They used to try to rush projects through before they were fully approved. They probably still do that LOL. The route 40 connector in Hamden is another one. While it is not abandoned, it was built to connect 91 with what would have been the route 10 Expressway.
      Route 10 never became a highway so now there is a couple mile long Highway going from 91 to no where really. I mean it is convenient if you need to go out that way, but it definitely does not require a highway connector.
      And yes, Route 11 is another one I want to check out. Watched a few videos on it, the unfinished portion looks mostly unpaved but it has all the rock cuts and bridges. Looks really interesting.

      Thanks man. I have been wanting to explore this for quite some time now, and I finally just said screw it and went up there today. On the way out a big semi dump truck drove past me. I can hear the trucks and the dump bodies banging and the distance when I was there. When looking at it on Google Earth it looks like the state uses it into dump and cut up all the trees that are cutting down on the side of the highway. There was a lot of brush and debris on the back side from that view.
      But all that aside I had an excellent time, it was just so cool to finally be walking around that rather than just driving by on the other side in a car LOL

      I guess there's a couple of bridges and rock Cuts where the road was going to be? That is something I definitely want to go see soon.
      Also I was wondering, do you know why they didn't end up building it?
      Maybe I'll dig into it a little bit later and see what I can find out,. Thank you

      Thank you so much, I am glad you enjoyed it. This place was really cool and I have been wanting to check it out for quite some time now. We have a couple of small sections of abandoned highway and Road here in Connecticut, but nothing like that four level stack. That thing is just incredible to see in person. But it is just an example if politicians rushing things before the provisions are even improved. Either way it's still really cool to walk-on LOL

      California doesn't have many abandoned interchanges because roads tend to be finished after being started. The 710 into South Pasadena was never finished, but unused pieces don't remain.
      The Embacadero and Cypress Freeways have been removed but the right of way was reused and there are few remnants. However, there are many abandoned pre-Interstate Era highways, and in the deserts, roads paved 100 years ago still exist.

      Glad you enjoyed it. This was something I had driven by for a few years and never noticed. I'm usually driving I'm not really looking around too much but one time a friend of mine was driving, just happened to look off towards the woods and noticed some of the guard rails missing. Drove by it again on the way home and it looked abandoned so I checked it out on Google Maps and found a cool little closed section. After that I dug around online a little bit trying to find out its history or why it was not in use and found a lot of good info on it

    I rode my bicycle all over that stack in 1976. (2.5 miles from my home) Yeah, after they built it, they abandoned it for years, then decided to use part of it for route 9.

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  3 роки тому +2

      That's awesome. I go out like riding for - five nights a week and when I saw that I thought it would be absolutely amazing to ride a bike around on that, even as an adult LOL
      When did they extend rt9 up to that area? For some reason as a kid I think I remember a portion of Route 9 in the Newington area that was built but not yet in use. Maybe in the early 90s I think I remember seeing it? I've asked a few people and everybody says they have no idea what I'm talking about. But for some reason I could swear that portion of Route 9 was built or partially built and not used

    My friend Mike Morrow took me here in the late 70's. It was immaculate back then! Probably maintained because the plan hadn't been totally abandoned yet. I only just learned about I-291 and the fact that part of this interchange was finally being used. That upper tier was also empty. Now I believe Rte 9 is using the former I-291 right of way from the south and the upper tier to connect to I-84. There were no missing pieces of any equipment or guard rails. Anything missing now, has to be vandalism and there was no graffiti.

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  2 роки тому +2

      That's awesome, thank you for sharing that.
      When I was young in the early 90s I remember I believe it was the Newington portion of Route 9 that was built but not being used, it ended somewhere in Newington and didn't quite make it to that interchange. Like you said it was all Immaculate that beautiful white concrete our highways used to be built of. Since that one was not used until sometime in the '90s it's still got the concrete, it hasn't completely worn out yet LOL
      The only reason I knew about it back then was because we would ride our dirt bikes on the unopened portion of Route 9 and we would just blast down this completely unused portion of highway. Completely irresponsible, I was really young but whatever that's what growing up is all about LOL.
      I'm not sure if Route 9 was originally supposed to go to that or what the deal was, I want to read into that a little more, but I found it when heading up to case Mountain I believe it was? I used to go mountain biking there with a few friends and as we took the interchange from 9 to 84 I saw the abandoned portion right next to me. It was beautiful, I was like how have I not known about this. Talked to a few people, found out most of them got in trouble for being up there, waited a few years and then just sent it one day, I had to experience it.

    • @glennabramowitz6562
      @glennabramowitz6562 2 роки тому

      Route 9 is following the path that I-291 was to be. That was to be a 3/4 loop around Hartford. The stack was built during I-84's construction anticipating the full build out of I-291. I haven't been back and don't know the configuration of 9 or whether it is up to "Interstate standards".

I try to keep a little variety, everything from abandonment, to trains at the station, to project cars at the shop and everything in between that I find enjoyable. I started this channel not realizing just how much fun I would have or the communities I would find. My true passion is history and I find a lot of that in abandoned buildings, houses or areas. They each have their own story to tell and I love trying to decipher that. When I am exploring and filming I feel as if you all are right there with me, I never expected any of this. And I really enjoy the live stream community when I am down at the train station or wherever it may be.

    This is really cool. Not too many abandoned type bridges/overpasses so close to and interwoven with working roads and overpasses. I found it on Google earth and looks like the entire second level/bridge is abandoned, but only one each of the 3rd and 4th level with the other still working. And best way to get to the 4th level would be to walk second road back as far as to where the ramp met up and traverse the ramp up to that 4th level. Did you ever go back to do that? That would be a cool perspective to see. Also maybe do a drone of the area. For all that to have lasted 50 years, looks to be in really good shape - testament to the construction work and craftsmanship of the builders - so that guy that posted early in the comments did a great job! As did you, really enjoyed it and thanks for sharing!

      I'm glad you enjoyed it, that's been something I have been wanting to see for years, finally had the opportunity.
      I didn't make it up to the top, the only time I was there it was when I filmed, I didn't go back only because I didn't want to push my luck.
      I was going to try to go to the top level, but the DOT uses the back half of the property to cut up and get rid of storm debris, I think you could even see it piled up in the Google map pictures unless they've moved it. But as I was walking to try to get up towards the top a truck can come through so I just left.
      Definitely was a shame though, I would have loved to have seen it from the top. And a drone is definitely not a bad idea at all, I could probably fly it right from the mall parking lot. That is something I would like to get for the channel this summer so hopefully I'll be able to capture it from that angle.
      Thank you for watching and your comments. Sorry for the delayed reply, but still catching up on them.

    As a kid I remember that being built along with a few others. There's similar along Rt 95 just south of the Ct border into NY and another one that seriously tall over near Brewster NY. Somewhere along the Merritt Parkway (Trumbull?) there was also a smaller overpass system that was not used for years and I recall noticing there was no exit 49 in one direction because the road was not finished for decades. Along Rt84 just north of Danbury was a section of highway left "half finished" for 20 years. The right of way was cleared in the 70s and some parts were paved while others were dirt. Another great area for street racing / off-roading back in the day because the area was rural enough to have a lack of police patrol. Similar sections of the "Rt 7 Connector" (Norwalk Ct) had many false starts from 1970 forward to about 1990. The road never did make it to Rt 84 in Danbury. As of this time it starts at Rt 95 and goes maybe 3 miles north, almost to the Wilton line.

There are no plans to continue Rt 7 extension from the Norwalk / Wilton line, even though the property was purchased in the late 60s. (would have gone up to Danbury)

    Very cool video. I really like abandoned and disused highway information. It seems that you are spot on about Route 9 using the I-291 ROW to connect to the stack, per Wikipedia's Connecticut I-291 entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_291_(Connecticut). By looking at the satellite view of the stack, that is a really cool design; too bad it only ever found partial use.
    Couple of questions: 1) Where was I-291 planned north of the stack? You can see the northern part of the interchange end at a tree line near a surface road on the satellite image. North of that, there are either reservoirs or housing developments (granted, the developments probably have popped up in the last 50 years, thus hindering future highway plans).
    2) Was the southwest arc of I-291 to follow entirely what is now Route 9, or was it to turn eastward after crossing Route 175? Supposedly where the DOT building is now on Route 5 was where I-291 was to cross Route 5.
    Another question related to I-291, but not to this stack: What did the I-291/I-91 interchange look like before reconstruction of I-91 and the interchange in the early '90s? The same Wikipedia entry indicates that ramps originally built at this interchange circa 1970 in anticipation of the northwest arc of I-291 were demolished/removed during the 1990s project.

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  2 роки тому

      Oh wow, that is really interesting. I didn't know they had demolished some ramps. I will definitely have to look into that.
      As for where the 291 route was supposed to go I'm not completely sure. I know they said it was canceled because it went too close to the West Hartford Reservoir north of that.
      I don't know what the interchange look like back in the '90s, but I do remember in the 80s Route 9 going through Newington but not in use. I don't know if they change the original Route 9 plans and decided to run it to the interchange on a different right away or exactly what was supposed to happen. But I remember when I was younger my uncle used to take me up on the unopened portion of Route 9 on his motorcycle, we'd rip down that thing and have a blast. Ahh, the 80s. Lol.
      But you definitely have peaked my interest with these comments, I'm going to try to research it a little more when I get some time, I know there's a lot more information out there but I just got to spend little time digging and looking for it. Most of those old records are available, just need to find them. If I find anything else out I will definitely reply back again.
      Thank you very much for taking the time to comment all of that information, very interesting

      cottage grove road in Bloomfield was part of the proposed I-291. There is a segment of I-291 that is done that goes to Manchester. The Route 9 piece from I-84 to I-91 was finished in 1992....so essentially two segments were never finished.

      I walked in,, didn't see any signs and did my thing, but came across a state DOT truck on the way out. I made tracks, I wasn't going to ask him if it was cool to be there.
      I obviously can't recommend you trying because I'm sure it's posted at the open gate on the highway.
      Also there is houses all along the side of it which you've probably seen on Google Maps if you know where it is. So it's not something you want to take multiple test hits on and also know the state is well aware of that spot, they patrol it multiple times a day. I would hate to see someone get there car taken for just enjoying life.
      I've seen a lot of cars making test hits on that stretch of highway between the Berlin Turnpike and the highway portion of Route 15.

    I am looking on Google Earth and can't find the abandoned 4 stack. Do yo have longitude and latitude? Is this in Hartford?
    Edit: Never mind I found it. It seems it is connected to southbound route 9 so all four levels are used but the access to the north and from the north in closed because the pavement stops with no outlets. This is why two of the flyovers are closed.

  • @swinde
    @swinde 3 роки тому

    Where do the ramps that are in use go? In a four level stack like this these ramps were normally used to provide the "left turn" access to the other freeway.
    Since there is only one freeway and no second freeway to connect to, are these ramps now tied to surface roads in the area for access? It would make sense that only two of the flyovers would be needed to provide "left turns" onto this freeway.

It's like, can't these municipalities even fathom that, oh, in 5, 10, 15 years traffic is going to increase anyway, and we'll wish we hadn't closed that section of road? It's just like what railroads did in the 1970's and 1980's! They ripped out all the passenger rail lines, and now here we are all these years later, and our highways are choking with traffic because there is no other alternative! Why are 4-stacks so rare up north but so ubiquitous down south? Texas, for example, is just one ENDLESS 4/5 stack it seems?? Does it have to do with icy/wintry conditions that make all the flyovers especially treacherous for 1/3 of the year?

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  3 роки тому +1

      I don't think it's because of icy conditions, we have plenty of high bridges that freeze and they use this horrendous chemical that works really well but destroys our cars lol.
      I think there is a lack of them up here because of the traffic. We don't have a whole lot of new highways, most of our inter-state system was built in the 50s through the 70s when traffic was much less. That becomes a real problem everyday during rush hour, or Interstate systems just can't handle the amount of today's traffic

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  Рік тому +1

      There is a lot of different reasons. This particular four level stack was most likely politicians being greedy. The stack was built when the other Highway That was supposed to come through was proposed, it wasn't even approved yet. I'm assuming somebody in office rushed it through to probably give their friends the contract so they make all their money. But then the highway That was supposed to connect to this ended up getting shut down cuz it ran too close to a reservoir. It was connected to one highway, then the second Highway finally came up in the 90s about 20 years or so after this was built. But the third Highway it was supposed to connect to it will never be built.
      Older roads like Route 66 and the Lincoln Highway where all built before our interstate system. Those were the only roads to go cross-country. But they weren't built to handle the amount of traffic we have these days. Once the interstate system came through it was bigger, wider and more accepting of today's traffic. Roads like 66 got circumvented, passed and pretty much just unused as traffic went elsewhere.
      That's only two examples though, like I said there's many different reasons

I just started a similar project on UA-cam if you could take a minute to look: ua-cam.com/play/PLSIvflBv1TYOfNdK5yeOhc21MN9qlr5yw.html Mostly hikes so far, but I want to share more of the interesting historical sites I’ve found. I look forward to viewing the rest of your videos. First one I viewed was about the Farmington 84 stack. Thanks!!

      Sorry I missed you reply. I will check it out and see what you got. Always looking to learn about more historic or abandoned stuff around us. Good luck and be safe

    Maybe somebody stole the guardrails.

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  3 роки тому

      I was thinking maybe people took some for scrap, but I think it would be kind of hard drive out with that stuff.
      The state probably took a couple of pieces over the years when there was accidents and they needed something quick to replace the damaged guardrails with?

    Here's an idea why not incorporate that into a walking trail?

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  3 роки тому

      They have done that with a lot are the old Rail lines throughout the state, but not sure if there's anything close enough to this group of bridges. That would be an awesome idea for sure, definitely would be cool to walk along and old highway while watching the other portions still in use

      I agree it's just some old concrete going to waste, and it is an eyesore for most people I'm sure, but it's still a cool View into yesterday. Don't see a whole lot of concrete highways around here anymore. They have all been torn up or repaved over the last 20+ years. I seem to find odd Beauty in stuff from the past LOL

      LOL yes that seems to fit much better. I watch a lot of abandoned channels from Europe and they say disused a lot. I think that's why I was thinking of it.

      It definitely is. There is another abandoned highway that never got finished going through the state as well. It's not paved but it's all carved out of the Rock in Hills, and some bridges were put in place. But I think that's about it. I want to find that this summer

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  3 роки тому

      Yes I believe you are correct.
      What happened was, at the time I filmed this I was watching a ton of abandoned videos from the UK, and, well, after hearing them every day you start to use the same words🤔
      They have such beautiful history over there, from Wars hundreds of years ago all the way up to a World War 2. I know it's not the most positive history, but it is still part of our world history and some up their Forts and areas are absolutely beautiful. A lot of it has fallen apart, but just to see stuff built by men that have been long forgotten I always find amazing.
      Thank you for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed the video

      They built this before the connecting Highway was approved. That Highway got denied and this has sat desolate since 1970

      I have seen people riding out there in the past, but there's also a pretty decent state D.O.T presence out there. I think they bring trees and other storm debris out there to store it and cut it up

      I apologize, apparently I missed a handful of comments on this video. And you are exactly right, they dumped tons of our tax dollars into something that wasn't even approved yet. That is something these people are very good at doing. But they never have to pay any consequences when something like this doesn't work out and becomes a very expensive waste

    Can someone who actually knows where this is please post the actual coordinates so I can quit wasting my time trying to locate it on Google Earth?
    The people that post the videos should have it listed to begin with......

    I can't help but think about what a waste of time, labour and money that all represents. Obviously, it was well constructed and could be returned to service with little effort. A big failure of political leadership was likely the culprit.

      Steven ... what was happening in that era was a series of false starts where these roads were all on a map dating back to the 30s WPA era when they planned out the interstate system. As funds became available certain parts of the project would get underway.... but in the late 60s environmentalists quite often protested a section of road that was too close to a wet land or other sensitive parcel. (their own yard?) Remember, during the pre WWII time there was no EPA or protected wet lands. This caused many a delay and quite often the money set aside was not enough to do the job after an impact study 10 years later. Here we are 50 years later and the state still has a budget earmarked to do an extension from Rt 84 in Danbury to Rt 95 in Norwalk Ct. (2 lanes each direction) It's less than 20 miles and would take a major portion of traffic away from the small towns, but the dollars available wouldn't build a single lane that distance now days, despite the fact that the state already owns the property.

      @@rupe53 Interesting, do you know if that was a project that would have widened Rt 7 or would they have built a completely different highway?

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 3 роки тому

      @@researchenthusiast8114 ... going from memory, this *WAS* the "super 7" project. I don't know if the original funds were ever depleted or maybe redirected for widening the original Rt 7. What I can say is the original Rt 7 only has a few sections (and very few miles) that ever made it to 2 lanes in each direction. Some areas are only 3 lanes total, mostly to aid merging and help intersection flow, in the Wilton / Ridgefield area. Going north through Brookfield they did finish 2 lanes each way for the last 10 (?) miles up toward New Milford. As a side note.... I was told there was some political agenda where towns that fought the highway project were going to have the original Rt 7 widened, like it or not. IOW, stick it up yer butt! It took decades but basically we now have a traffic nightmare in town because so many pushed against the super highway 50 years ago.

    The patterns on the guardrail at 7:46 are more from the galvanic zinc coating which tends to form crystalline patterns on the surface during the hot dip process. Some of the horizontal streaks look like they're from abrasion though. Probably a state plow or service vehicle brushing up against it at some point during its life.

      Interesting. Thank you for that.
      I'm always trying to learn as much as possible about these places.
      The state does use it store and cut up storm debris and whatnot, it's very possible plows have gone through there quite a bit

      @@richdiscoveries I've been wanting to do a video here for a long time too! From RI about an hour and a half away so I really need to plan for it. Was thinking a bike ride through with the GoPro would be interesting to show what "driving" the unused ramps would look like if 291 had been there.
