Dude JRR tolkien loykey wrote the favorite parts of my childhood, and he still inspires me till this day. The hobbit was my favorite childhood book and seeing it done like this means a lot

The Black Arrow was not a dragon killing lance. It was literally just a really nicely made arrow and Bard’s family heirloom.
And Bard was practically a one-off character. Thus is the beauty of Tolkien's secondary world.
Well duh. If Smaug was facing a bard with a Dragonlance, this whole combat session would have gone MUCH differently.

I'd honestly say hes the greatest fictional writer ever both in terms of modern and ancient literature.

The thrush knew about the hole in Smaug's scale armor by eavesdropping on Bilbo when he told the dwarves about it after witnessing it itself while talking to Smaug.
So Bilbo sneaking into the mountain had a point, simply because he detected Smaug's only weakness and eventually, this information reached Bard who couldn't have killed the dragon without it.
The movie completely undermined that. Bard knew about the hole before and so, by extension, Bilbo and the dwarfes infiltrating Erebor had NO positive effect on Smaug's demise. THANKS WARNER, I HATED THAT!!!!

Arguably rivertown wouldn't even have suffered the attack were it not for Bilbo carelessly name-dropping the barrel rider bit. Thus causing smaug to be vengeful. Bilbo woke the dragon
@@bunnystick So Bilbo was directly responsible for Rivertown being destroyed and in the movie nothing good actually came out of it.
Well bilbo/the dwarves still caused the attack on lake town although that could have been the only way Smaug would end up dead

I'm positively facinated by how Tolkien depicts the destruction of evil...
It's always a small flaw that the Big Bad overlooks that gets them killed
Tolkien's whole thing was about how good can't always defeat evil, but evil will always defeat itself.
Like how Frodo couldn't destroy the One Ring, but it's evil influence on Frodo and Gollum caused them to fight and caused The Ring's destruction.
Smaug's arrogance was his defeat. He believed himself indestructible, and so overlooked the tiny hollow in his breast where no genstone guarded his soft underbelly. And this arrogance, combined with his wrathful attack on Lake Town, caused his defeat, when if he stayed in Erebor the heroes, Thorin's companions, would never have been able to kill him.
I always loved how the book portraits the act of killing Smaug feels more magical and fantastic in the book than in the adaptation, where action has the priority

The Hobbit was his best book by far.
I’ll never understand why the movies made Black Arrow a common dragon killing giant crossbow bolt, this is much cooler
Not really. The movie kind of ham-fisted it all. But the black arrow is just a fancy arrow, not explicitly a magic arrow. So it is confusing how a small, little arrow can destroy a massive creature like Smaug, where it would not kill an elephant and Smaug is much larger than an elephant.
The weak spot of a dragon is its stomach, Smaug covered his up with gems and gold, hence his nickname "Smaug the Golden" and why none could kill him. Bard's ancestor had managed to dislodge one gem above his heart and it was there Bard shot him. Longbow almost point blank against a target flying towards him, a perfect shot and one that echoes that of the distant past.
@@Duchess_Van_Hoof But the problem for a mere arrow isn't even armor, it's the sheer bulk. Making it a scorpion (or alternatively a truly enchanted arrow) was a good adaptation decision. The way Bar ends up shooting it from a broken bow is dumb though.
I really like how the Tolkiens dragons are actual representations of fire or firy rock. The idea of quenching firedragons is in a weird way deeply interesting to me ^^
Well, they aren't literally made out of fire or rock, but more as the power OF fire, not so much the rock, because they are actually squishy underneath their bellies.
When making creatures like that, I feel you can either use science or the workings of your world to explain how something like why a dragon not wanting to enter a lake would work, and once you've made you choice you can't really go either way. So depicting dragons as being earth-bound representations of fire that would (for obvious reasons) dislike water is a what I call rather excellent method of doing so. The biological side would probably talk about the physics of such a large creature effectively traversing water of that depth, and also discussing the effect that could have on his fire-breathing capabilities (for example water interfering with the process that actually lights the fuel for the flame, assuming there's a fuel).

The original version of the scene
This takes me back I read the book with my Dad when I was 10. We took turns reading chapters aloud and it took us weeks to finish. That book inspired a love of reading and dragons that over time grew to an obsession. I even had a stuffed dragon I named Smaug that traveled the world with me, hell here I am 16 years later and he still sits at the foot of my bed as I type this.
Once again the books are better in almost every way.
Biased much? Both of the scenes play out in almost the exact same way
The scene where he balanced it on his son's shoulder is a bit off though. And they removed half the plot about Smaug and his weakness, why it even was there in the first place.

The Hobbit is actually the next book on my TBR. Now it won't be of help to hear your voice with every words and these visuals for every descriptions. Love it!
This is amazing, utterly amazing. As an aside, I'd always wondered why they destroyed the bridges and why exactly Smaug was bothered by that - was he intending to land and walk across the bridges to attack the town on foot? He can fly, and does, immediately, torching the town from the air, but still seems very bothered by the lake and still hopes that the townsfolk will come ashore so he can get them. I get that the lake would quench him, but why does he think that's going to happen? Can he only fly in short spurts? Is he worried about being shot down? That doesn't seem in character, especially when he's essentially invincible until that one lucky shot in his one weak spot that he was arrogant enough to show off to Bilbo earlier on. It was just something that I never quite got as a kid :)
I really loved this. Thanks for making this. I took some screenshots as your design of Smaug is very similar to what I picture him looking like when reading the books. I might show them to people when I read the hobbit and maybe use them as art reference when I get better at art. Hope you don't mind.
Such an epic scene. Loved it in the animated (1977) movie. Was eagerly looking forward to the live active scene and they couldn't have messed it up more. Thank you for this re-creation!
For some reason I remember the thrush being crucial to the themes of The Hobbit. I'll have to re-read it. Just that thrush always stuck in my mind.
It somewhat was. It was the old animal of the Mountain, who had brought the crucial information at the critical moment to bring about the downfall of the great evil of the day - the smallest causing the downfall of the mightiest. There's a lot of themes that can be drawn out of the thrushes in the Hobbit.

This is a really good video. The visuals and sound effects were great. This was a really great moment from the book that I read years ago.
Though, the only problem I have with this moment from the book is... Bard. I mean, he is one of the most clunkily introduced characters ever. All the build-up for the Dragon and he isn't killed by any of the main characters. Then suddenly Bard is introduced and his backstory dropped just as quickly and he is the one who killed Smaug. A character who hasn't existed for a full page yet is the one who killed the main villain? Even as a kid I found it jarring.
This breeze is strangely warm for autumn.
That was so much better then Smaugs End in the Hobbit movie.

Also, I'm a huge fan of Tolkien: I love his writing style and the way he depicted the attack of the dragon, etc.
But, seriously... Will anyone tell me that this is better than what we got in the movies? Like I said, I'm a huge fan of Tolkien, but nonetheless I never thought that the Hobbit (his first book) was the best version that could be told of this story.
Being loyal to the book when you do an adaptation isn't an argument to say that your movie is good. I think this is the actual proof that what can be done in a book cannot always be done in a movie.
I'm not saying that the Hobbit movies were perfect (like everyone, I found that Bard drawing the Black Arrow using his son's shoulder was a bit ridiculous), but seriously, look at me in the eyes and tell me that you would rather have had this version where Bard appears just to kill Smaug with a totally normal little arrow, than what we got with Bard's backstory being actually developped, his fear of the dragon and what could happen to Laketown exposed, his relation with Thorin and the dwarves, his family etc... And a special arrow said to be specially made to kill dragons. Tell me you'd prefer the book version in theaters than what Peter Jackson did.

I feel that if you took someone entirely unfamiliar with Tolkien's works and you presented them this passage as if it were a European folktale, they'd have absolutely zero doubt believing it actually is one.
Tolkien was a master of his craft.
Very much so, because Tolkien was a Professor or Anglo-Saxon literature. His use of language here compares well with Séamus Heaney’s magnificent translation of Beowulf.

Nonononono! That is a clear exaggeration. It is more likely Smaug was of similar (all be it a bit smaller) size than Ancalagon.

Anyone else remember the old cartoon adaptation? The dwarves looked weird, and the Mirkwood elves were wrinkled, ugly blue things, but I do remember it being pretty accurate to the book.

Just curious was smaug a six limbed dragon or was he as the movie depicted which is more like a wyvern design
The designs that Tolkien himself drew seem to show him as having six limbs. That said, wyverns as we understand them are a modern reinvention caused by D&D and the need is classify everything. So it's a little uncertain. That said, he was most likely meant to be four legs and 2 wings, unlike the movie design.
@@thomassaxon8254 cheers it's just a case of finding art work online glaurung is depicted as having 4 legs no wings and ancalgon as having 6 limbs so there are quite a few differences
@@thomassaxon8254 well, actually, artwork depicting wyverns did have them with two legs and two wings, and even the name was different from dragon, where wyvern came from the old language meaning Viper, dragon came from Greek drakon meaning large water serpent, and was used for pythons, aka constricting snakes, as opposed to venomous ones. It's a modern idea to use d&d as a scape goat to say wyverns and dragons back in the day were the same thing, when that couldn't be further from the truth.
