@@sting3293 setting a 240hz monitor to 120 hz everytime to "fix" it is not exepteble for that price...i have 2 odessey g7 and had sooo manny issues with it so i stay away for a bit til they fix the quilty control.
Regarding the monitor to monitor variances that you discussed, it would great to see a popular, inexpensive monitor purchased three times for comparison in one video. I have always wondered what the margin for error is between the unit that happens to be being tested and the unit I end up buying.
YEP! Completely agree. But I think that test would be better suited for expensive premium monitors because who is really expecting good quality control on lesser products.
Panel variance has all to do with quality control and nothing else. You can have a solid quality control on a low budget model and you can have bad quality control on a high-end model. Samsung is well known and well documented for having the most horrendus quality control of all manufacturers when it comes to monitors. Suprisingly, some of their other products are excellent (like SSDs for example). I guess these are completely different factories with completely different quality control processes.
Great work, Tim. A thorough analysis laid out really well. I really appreciate the fact you're willing to call them out on things like the deception on that cheat mode for brightness in tests, as well as the scan line issues. It takes more than a cursory glance to pick all these things out sometimes... Most other monitor reviews I've seen seem to only talk about features without checking the actual functionality.
2 years ago I bought a set of 3 Odyssey G7's, (which cost about $2700 at the time). And all 3 of them had major defects, scan lines, flickering, dead pixels, randomly turning off and on for a few seconds. So I contacted Samsung about it because it seemed like a firmware issue to me. And the Samsung rep told me they wouldn't be providing firmware updates (which they luckily came back on, because the firmware updates have made these problems less frequent.) But they also told me, AND I QUOTE: "Just buy the new model once that comes out." So apparently, if I give them $2700, they give me something that doesn't work, and they expect me to give them another $4500 for a product that has the same f****** issues! This is absolutely unacceptable.
The main issue I've had with my G7 is burn in, which I was quite surprised to see after less than a year of ownership. I've never had burn in on any other LCD panel I've used over the years. Samsung's quality control is a mess, which is really frustrating when their technology is so impressive and compelling. Aside from the burn in I've been blown away by the performance of this panel, it's the best LCD I've ever seen in terms of overall performance, which just makes the QC failures all the more tragic.
@@harbingerdawn This is so strange, I've never heard of VA panel burn-in in my life. Sometimes, especially bad examples of IPS panels can get temporary image retention, but even they don't get anything permanent, and VA is especially resistant even to temporary image retention. But anyway, I believe you, it's just such a strange issue. Did your burn in go away eventually or is it still there?
I was so afraid after I had seen the Hardware Unboxed review after pre-ordering the Neo G8. I was going to cancel it, but I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did. I might be lucky to have gotten a good panel or something cause the monitor is amazing and I have never seen any of the issues (such as scanlines) appearing. The HDR looks ridiculous, and when gaming at 4K with high refresh rates things just look insane...
When you run a dark scene do you see it? I Had one for a really long time, and when I was playing Elden Ring in some of the darker areas with dark armor on, I thought something was actually wrong with the screen. When I go into e.g. windows dark mode and look at my chrome tabs, I can clearly see the scanlines now. Not in the bright scenes.
@@00SaltsI heard there may be different panel variants, but don't know how true those rumours are. yep, the monitor is always set to 240hz, but i switch between HDR and non HDR depending on on the content I watch or play. Only issue I found is watching non HDR content with HDR off makes everything look brighter and better, but when I watch HDR content it looks amazing with it switched on. If u have a warranty or can exchange it, maybe give it a shot. Super happy with mine and knowing I'm future proofed for a good couple of years 😊
@@lazyreuvin That HDR experience is because windows kind of sucks at HDR sometimes, its not the monitors fault you have to switch between it on and off depending on the program. When it works it sure works though.
I know this is almost a year old but I just wanted to mention that it's blues and oranges on the G8 that really show the scanlines. A solid black image is almost never going to show any signs.
Tim, can you please try some custom refresh rates on the Neo G8 to find at what refresh the scan lines disappear? Custom Resolution Utility is useful for that.
Late reply, but this seems to be a cable based issue. I had the G8 and didn't see any scan lines at all at 4K, 10 bit color and 240hz. When I used the DisplayPort cable that was in the box, I saw the scan lines. But granted, they were nearly impossible to spot unless you were only around 1ft away from the display or closer. And again, once I used a true DisplayPort *1.4a* cable (with higher DSC bandwidth), there were absolutely zero scan lines.
@@Kizzster Nope. On PC, DSC is not supported over HDMI. So you have to use a DisplayPort 1.4a cable. I happened to find one on Amazon labeled as a DisplayPort 2.0 cable (but the description says that it has 80Gbps DSC bandwidth - which is 2.5x that of DisplayPort 1.4a's bandwidth lol). So heck, maybe I've just been getting lucky with that specific cable's high as heck DSC bandwidth range...
@@Kizzster Just because the cable supports said bandwidth doesn't mean that the PC does over that protocol =). Not everything you see on the internet is correct, kind sir. On PC, you will currently need to use DisplayPort. New consoles have to use HDMI 2.1 to reach that much newer 120hz mode.
Already commented on one of the previous videos...EX owner of G7 here, do not buy those monitors, QC is so trash. People (like me) fell for "good spec" but with such number of issues you will totally regret buying it. BTW I tried to replace my unit 3 times and Samsung refused it! Waste of money, frustration and time...
Bought both the G7 and AW2721D. Returned the G7 because of all the problems with the G7. If you can't use the monitor at 240 Hz without scan lines then that's a problem. Way better off buying a competitor over Samsung.

I was about to buy two of them but after hearing about the scan lines and seeing them at microcenter I couldn't believe how bad they felt. They are also thick af... I ended up buying an LG thinq OLED tv instead.

Yeah I got a G7 and its the best monitor ive owned in my life. Absolutely crazy good HDR and blacks for a non oled. Gets really bright. Its unlike anything else i've used and no risks of burn in.
The RTINGS review of the NEO G8 right now being talked about on the monitor subreddit is like a battleground of people voicing their differing opinions lol. Some saying the G8's issues are overblown and not that big of a deal while others like me who think it's hard to accept the faults for $1500...

I originally used the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 for 4K 240hz gaming while playing Apex Legends. For an entire year i used the Neo G8 for for all purposes gaming,office work etc. But towards the end of 2023 when the 540h monitor was announced I bought it and now I use the the 540hz monitor solely for gaming while i primarily use the Neo G8 for office work , web browing and overall content consumption

There is also more versatility and best of all games run better on superior computing hardware. I have an 19-13900K processor and an RTX 4090 with 64GB of ram. The Games run perfect for me along with high graphics like 4K while maintaing high framerates like 240hz & now in some games like Call of Duty a full stable 540fps.. PC GAMING is amazing & I'll never buy another console again. The only thing I miss about console is the community, the overall people I encounted are so fun and down to earth compared to the PC community. Then again the Demographics plays a huge part in community so i understand , but still I miss them. Alot say PC lobbies are too hard and do not want to play anymore

As an owner of the g8, I think it’s more about principle when you consider the price you’re paying. $1200 shouldn’t cut any corners or sacrifice qc to beat opponents in the market. I got lucky with mine at my local microcenter, was ready to return but all has been well. Biggest complaint is the additional lag from using vrr and/or local dimming.
Please, please, please, include some TVs for those couch gamers among us. Your reviews are great and would love your to review 55" class UHD TVs like 1 or 2 of each major brand. Thanks for launching this channel! Hope it garners the following you deserve. I personally find this level of content much needed, glad you're venturing out of your non stop fps testing.
One persistent problem I have had with the Neo G8 is that it won't allow booting in HDMI 2.0. You either have to boot in HDMI 1.4 and then switch to HDMI 2.0 or (oddly) open the OSD and then reboot. I have seen this annoying quirk mentioned elsewhere. Happens with all cables, many graphics card and systems. The OSD is not that easy to get to (like if you have a soundbar).
If you are feeling bored you could test CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) out with an AMD card. It is only locked for Nvidia cards. See how far you can push a G7 till scanlines appear (or lower Hz on the G8 until they dissappear).
@- FireFly Can you make a screenshot? Everyone so far who has/had this monitor said that you cant set a 200Hz/4K resolution (for example) on the G8. On the other hand, i have proof of a 6900XT user who overclocked his Neo G7 to 200Hz/4K: ua-cam.com/video/WH3IVs8fU_g/v-deo.html Latest nvidia drivers may have lifted the lock. I am genuinely curious about this.
@- FireFly I know there is an option in the GUI. People reported that the refreshrate setting is locked on their G7/G8. They could only set a custom resolution in there. Not the Hz.
5:55 actually, you can, you need to just use Custom Resultion Utility. It can set your display's refresh rate to pretty much any arbitrary refresh rate you want if a display physically can display that, like 163.25 Hz.
Since someone buying this monitor is a gaming enthusiast and well used to driver instals, afterburner, pc monitoring, bios updates etc, CRU is an acceptable solution. I just hope I don't need it !
Ok, on my G8, the Scanlines appears in 120Hz mode! So weird. This is the first time I buy Samsung products but I would say I fell in love with this monitor in overall. The biggest drawback to this monitor though is its viewing angle like I've never seen any other display as bad as G8.
My neo g7 had little scan lines for like a day, somehow they completely disappeared. Kinda confusing but I'm absolutely happy with the screen :) Thanks for the nice videos :)

Just bought the Neo G8 for my XSX first monitor ever little nervous about learning about all the new issues but it seems like that was over a year ago so I’ll see how it is when it arrives Saturday

I agree wholeheartedly. The scan lines are at a level where you have to get close to see them, but the price makes it unforgivable. Is there any way to improve this?
For those who didn’t like the prices of these or were torn on the two, the Neo G7 is 799.99 and Neo G8 is 999.99 on Amazon, B&H, Best Buy, and New Egg to name a few merchants. (As of 11/23/22) For 799.99 the G7 becomes instantly worth it IMHO, while leaving room for a monitor arm for that stupid stand…
Any chance we can get a similar comparison video between MSI MAG274QRF-QD and MSI MAG274QRX? They're 2 of your most recommended 27" 1440p monitors but this particular comparison wasn't brought up in the MAG274QRX review IIRC. I wonder if choosing the 240hz is a no brainer or if there could be enough good reasons to choose the MAG274QRF-QD despite the lower refresh rate.
I'm sending back my G7 tomorrow. I got vertical lines on the left side of the screen. I tried everything, but since it was the newest addition I concluded it was the monitor. Before it went to crap it had a great picture.

@@Jay-son. I have the Neo G8 and using it with the PS5 its practically a Neo G7, but its great. i'd say if you get it get a good monitor arm for it though it looks a lot better with it

The G7 and G8 must be good for watching movies right? they both have HDR 2000 with great contrast/picture quality so I'm assuming 4k HDR movies look great. One last question, do you like the aggressive curve? Thanks for the advise.
I just want a good flat screen 32 inch 4k IPS monitor for gaming, movies and productivity. I love these but I really don’t want a curved screen. I sit too far back for that to work for me. Please help! Advice?
Try Neo G9, it’s a mess! Mine still doesn’t show HDR properly after 3 firmware updates. Do yourself a massive favour and just stay away from Samsung. Never mind the popping sounds that my monitor makes every 20 seconds driving me insane.
unfortunately it is a lottery, with my neo g9 I received it without any problem. I'm not saying that there can't be problems but we must recognize that if it arrives without problems it is a beautifull monitor.
I may be an outlier, but I've got a Neo G8 and there are no scanlines at 240 Hz. I got this off an open box offer on BestBuy and I paid $150 less than MSRP. I'm pretty happy with the monitor.
I guarantee you, you have scanlines. Look at the blue circle on the blue windows volume slider at 240hz and you will. See. White horizontal lines, they are gone at 120hz. I didn't see it for the longest till I looked close. But it has. No. Effect on gaming at all
@@Citizen_of_the_Verse - It is certainly possible the scanline issue is not as widespread as you or this channel claim it to be. Pepis' monitor could be an unaffected sample.
Personally, I'll avoid both of these monitors, purely for the QA problems. Come on, Samsung, you're a huge company that makes incredible products. But I need assurance that the one I buy won't be a piece of crap!
Sorry to say this, but if you buy the G7/G8, it will definitely be a piece of crap. Quality control literally does not exist over there at Samsung. Just buy the Sony M9 and call it a day. That's what I decided to do in the end, after hearing numerous complaints from users who actually bought these G7/G8 monitors. Too bad, because I really like the idea of the fast VA panel.
@@syed2694 It's not perfect, but it's the best we got at the moment, considering that Samsung is basically unsable because of all those quality issues. I hope that later on Sony makes M10 or something with 1000+ zones and 32" big.
It would be nice if Samsung took care of these terrible QA issues in next generation of these monitors. These are one of the best displays on market that no one should buy because there is huge chance that you'll get display with tons of issues. 32" 4K, high refresh, good response times and good HDR experience - that's perfect monitor for me, just fix these QA issues and give us flat panel option, if it may help they can even reduce refresh rate of "budget model" to 120Hz (or 144Hz) - realistically no one cares if they get their 4K screen at 120 or 165Hz.
With rting review though, the G7 seems to have the same contrast as your G8 so it's probably not the G8 spesific issue but just Samsung general QC issue. That said, with the scanline issue, I don't if people should consider it even if it cost the same or very near to that of G7. Seems like just a waste of money (although better tuning across all refresh rate range is probably more useful than 165 hz vs 120 hz)
As someone who just purchased a Neo G8 and am getting more and more annoyed by the very obvious scanlines in day to day use and even gaming (mainly UI elements and coloured text, blues, orange, pinks, yellows and even some green) I have tried everything to get rid of them, every setting, every configuration. 120hz with VRR Control on = Scanlines. 240hz no matter what = Scanlines but what I found VERY interesting is if you set the monitor to any refresh rate & any resolution at under 240hz, even 60hz, you have no scanlines as expected but if you change the display size in the OSD to anything but fullscreen/Wide/Auto so for example 27in/23in. Bam. Scanlines. This indicates it's not purely a refresh rate issue. I believed it was a limitation of either the display/cable/DisplayPort/DSC but being able to get scanlines at a low refresh rate and even low resolution must mean otherwise. I contacted Samsung about it and they told me to get a replacement. I have a sneaky suspicion my replacement will have the same problems. I'm going to try custom refresh rates with a third party program as at 240hz it's locked out in NVCP.
Just won the 27 inch on ebay for $380 🥳🥳🥳 but the amount of negative comments on here is scaring me already! Its my first ever gaming pc and ppl recommend this monitor but now I have a second thought about it
I've had a G8 for about a month now. Have none of the issues you are referring too. No scan lines at 240hz, no wobbly stand. I cannot speak to the brightness and how many nits, what I do know is that its bright enough to burn your retinas! lol. I'm absolutely made up with it. 240hz in 4k, albeit with DLSS is absolutely insane looking. I cannot imagine a better gaming experience. So I can only assume they have either fixed the issues or you just got a dodgy one, or I just got a goodun!?
I just got my Neo g8. The Scanline is very very subtle. You have to really focus on one icon with specific color to visualize it, but it does exist on mine. Again very subtle.

Don't buy either. Both cost way too much and they're riddled with issues, Samsung's QC is terrible. Get the LG CX OLED TV or Dell's ultrawide QD-OLED instead...
No issues on my Neo G8 for now (no scanlines or flickers), I am only hoping it will last for at least a couple of years until we see high refresh rate 32" 4K QD-OLEDs popping up, I dislike ultrawide.
RTING's review and even other channels like Viktors Reality and JoelsterG4K seems to show the opposite, Neo G8 looking better than the Neo G7 in brightness and motion (e.g. RTING's Early Access test results and Viktor's observations).
Viktors Reality is a Samsung shill. The monitor has glaring issues but it receives nothing but praise from that dumb channel. Not to mention his testing method is just cranking brightness and displaying the same image. Amateur.
The other day they were the same price on amazon for a couple hours. Almost pulled the trigger on the G8 but ill wait until the end of the year to see what we get.
Thank you for the video, you guys are the best, as always! I do have some questions about these monitors. Does the Neo G7 exhibit any blooming when using HDR in comparison to the Neo G8? Some reviewers are mentioning that the Neo G7 has blooming (and worse black levels, could be the coating) when compared to the Neo G8. I want to get the Neo G7 because the scanlines on the Neo G8 are unacceptable, but if it has worse blooming or black levels than I might just skip these. THX :D Also do you still have the PG32UQX around? It'd be great content to compare Mini LED IPS to Mini LED VA ! :D
Both monitors will have some blooming, its impossible to not have blooming on a non-oled panel, even with the huge amount of local dimming these monitors have. I have seen both in person and they both have about as perfect blacks as you could possibly expect from this type of panel. They are excellent panels, but the G7 overall seems like the better buy here, for the exact reasons in this video. The G7 I now own has better blacks than my Sony x90J full array TV, which already had great blacks. The non-glossy coating though will make the blacks not feel quite as dark as a glossy panel coating though, but thats the trade off for anti glare.
I am looking forward to the review of the Philips 27B1U7903 which features 2304 local dimming zones and AU Optronics AHVA (M270QAN05.0) panel. In a Chinese review, which you can find on YT, they state that its the best mini led display they've tested.
I have a g8 and have compared it against my xg27aqm and compared 240, 120, and 60 hz and I can not see any differences. No scanlines. I think this is a panel lottery issue.
Exactly. But it seems that Samsung SSD facility is actually a different manufacturing site with different quality control standards. Samsung makes great SSDs and great phones, but their monitors are absolute trash and nobody should be buying them.
@@speedzero7478 Well, as I said, phones and SSDs. Supposedly, their SSDs are among the best when it comes to reliability, quality and durability. Samsung makes the whole package, both NAND chips and controllers. Also, we're way past the age of hard drives, but the ones Samsung was making were incredibly reliable. I bought one in 2002, used it for 5 years and then sold it to a friend. When we had a chat he told me the drive still works perfectly fine. It has been fucking 20 years, it still works, and it's not even an enterprise product made for servers or 24/7 operation, it's just a regular consumer HDD made for home use.

I’ve realized all these monitors look better in sdr then in hdr. When it comes to pc. Maybe only on the lg c2 it’s worth it anything else it’s pointless.
My NEO G7 had scanlines even at 120hz and terrible screen uniformity at grey/white screen so i returned. You're still playing the panel lottey for the neo g7

burn in, edge lit dimming, ips glow, gray blacks, abysmal contrast ratio are all one big defect to me, far worse than the scanlines on G8 where I need to use S22 Ultra and zoom in on it or when I bang on the desk with force the monitor wobbles.
For real, I'm no particular Samsung fanboy, but this monitor is SO SO SO much better than the typical recommended high end IPS ones it's not even funny. One single defect at a particular HZ (which I'd only use for gaming anyway, where it's just not noticeable) is worth it. Not going back.
The best all-rounder is the Samsung QN90A (not the 43" iteration, don't bother with the QN90A 43", it's a different panel all together). The 50" is now a great price, has HDMI 2.1, 120hz VA mini LED, 1500 nits (2000 nits for 55" upwards) and is less than £600. I have one and the C2 42". The QN90A is the only panel to come close the C2 in terms of HDR wowness. However, to combat the C2 Samsung recently released the QN90B; it has a 43" 144hz 2000 nits VA panel but is currently marginally more expensive than the C2. Judging by the price reduction of the QN90A, in less than a year I imagine the QN90B will be the panel to own very soon. Better HDR than the G7/8 and as close to C2 HDR ability as currently possible without any of the problems - without factoring in HDR the QN90B is better in practically every sense. Why don't tech channels talk about these other TVs if they're mentioning LG? BTW I own all the TVs I mention, as well as the QN700B, which is brilliant for gaming, if you can put up with a 55" - effectively the Samsung Ark but 8K. 4k on a 55" 8k panel looks so much cleaner and crisper than 4k on a 42" C2, too. The HDR isn't as good as OLED but it's pretty damn good. If Samsung made a 43" 8K I'd use it as a monitor. BTW the QN700B can be calibrated using Samsung's app and the results are in the margin of error vs manual calibration.

The normal G7 has the exact same scanline issue. Yes, it's gone with the 120hz mode but at the cost of a much more noticable overshoot... Samsungs 240hz Panel is just bad... No issues like that on the 165hz G5 Panel.
The thing is looking at the spec's etc is only part of the picture. I recently decided to get a new monitor after 14 years my 1080p panel needed replaced. I waited for 2k 240hz IPS panel's to come out, went and tested including the neo G7 and IPS panels in the end the original G7 was the best fit for me given my usage. price wasn't a factor but saving hundreds sure was a bonus.
This is good advice, the older g7 of course isnt as good as the neo, but its roughly half the price. It's also gotten a refresh and has really good performance. My cousin has one and also really likes it.
I just buy G7 and it`s amazing but there is one BIG PROBLEM! If adaptive synch is set to on in monitor settings then you get no signal when you turn on your pc. Monitor get`s signal only if you change your displayport cable to other port in GPU.(pc in off) I have new pc, rtx 3080ti and so on, there is no any problem. If you go to monitor settings and turn adaptive synch off, then it "works normally" but then you must turn on & off adaptive synch every time when you go to windows and want to use it. You must remember turn adaptive synch off if you don`t want to go on your knees every time and chande dp port cable place in GPU if you have adaptive synch on in your monitor settings. I tried many different dp port cables, no help. If you use hdmi then it works (as it must work) even adaptive synch is enebled but you get only 120hz so no thanks...(no 120hz if you play with pc and you have 165hz monitor) I think that this dp port must work sameway like this hdmi? I mean that you don`t must go to set adaptive synch manually every time... Is this faulty monitor?? I`m going to return it and only ask if it`s good idea to give another change to this model or is it better to forget it and buy other monitor, aorus or something else...This problem, is it maybe result from between monitor software/g synch or something else these kind of things...Other option is that this is faulty monitor.
LG 32GQ950 review please? Hoping for a good dual use monitor option. Neo G7 / G8 (curve, qc issues, low max SDR brighness ~350 nit) and QD-OLED monitors (pixel layout, low max SDR brightness ~250 nit) are all too compromised for desktop use to be good dual use options.
That LG is trash. It has a fan inside (God why?) and edge-lit dimming. Just buy Sony M9 and call it a day. Unfortunately, it's not available in 32" size.
Again with the neutered HDMI "2.1" on monitors costing over $1200 in 2022...incredibly unacceptable. Can't be bothered to spend the few bucks extra for proper controller hardware? People buying won't be doing so to pair up with game consoles. They will be enthusiasts with 3090s and 6900XTs that support a full 48Gb/s output looking to get the most out of their expensive hardware. Don't get me started on the obnoxious unnecessary curve...
I ordered neo g7 for 656.24$ even though Neo g8 is for 765$ in my country mainly I avoided Neo g8 cause of the scan line issues even though it was just 110$ difference.
On my PS5 I have a question with this monitor The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 When you use adaptive sync you can’t use low input lag function it’s washed out so you can’t select it How many milliseconds is it in this mode when playing on the PlayStation 5 do you know what the input lag is on adaptive sync compared to having adaptive sync off and low input lag on . What’s the difference between the two as far as milliseconds? The reason I asked this is because you can’t have them both on together so I wanna know what the better choices because with adaptive sync on you can use VRR on the ps5 but with it off, you can use low input lag mode but can’t use VRR on your PS5 . Just want to know this because I play first person shooters and I want the quickest response time so adaptive sync on or adaptive sync off and low lag on what do you recommend?
@@ezclapper4205 At first the curvature of the monitor seems a bit wild but you soon get used to it and its great to have open tabs on it, kinda like a book. The HDR is really nice and the colours do pop when viewing HDR content. Video games look lush as well as having the165hz and the colours in non HDR are still very good. I use an imac for productivity to get the best all round colour though when editing images and video but if you want a good gaming and cinema experience, this is a really good monitor. I think the price has come down as well since I bought mine. No regrets, very sweet monitor.

@@yar37 There was a display port cable that came with it for a 4k @ 165hz output. I dont think you can run 4k @ 165hz with a hdmi 2.1 cable which I think is limited to 4k@ 120hz
Please review the ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQ I think its a solid monitor (as far as rtings says anyways). It would be awesome if you reviewed it so I can have a second professional opinion on it. I originally wanted to purchase and LG 27GP850-b but the poor contrast held me back from doing so. I then looked into the ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM, but the $900 Canadian price tag was far too much and the features and specs were far too excessive for what I need, I don't need the 240 something hz the ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM has, which lead me to finding the ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQ which seems like an awesome middle ground for $550 Canadian. ( its on sale currently on amazon Canada)
One thing that doesn't get mentioned much is the G8 AR film is VERY aggressive. So much so, it actually significantly blurs the pixels so that 4K clarity isn't as sharp on it versus the G7 and other monitors.
I know this ain’t got much to do with the video but for the xbox series x, is the Samsung oddessey g7 or g70a better (not the neo versions, the old g7 vs the hdmi 2.1 flat ips panel)
I had scan lines on my G7 too. However, I recently figured out that, at least for me, changing the Black Equalizer in the monitor's settings fixed the issue. By default, mine came set at 14 and when I set it to 12, the scanline issue went away. I only found this out recently after having the monitor and dealing with the scanline issue for months. Now I'm extremely happy with it again, just wish I found this out sooner haha.

Regarding the monitor to monitor variances that you discussed, it would great to see a popular, inexpensive monitor purchased three times for comparison in one video. I have always wondered what the margin for error is between the unit that happens to be being tested and the unit I end up buying.
YEP! Completely agree. But I think that test would be better suited for expensive premium monitors because who is really expecting good quality control on lesser products.
Also a UA-camr named Viktors Reality has a NEO G7 and NEO G8 and said he's planning on buying another NEO G7 to test Panel Variance.
Panel variance has all to do with quality control and nothing else. You can have a solid quality control on a low budget model and you can have bad quality control on a high-end model. Samsung is well known and well documented for having the most horrendus quality control of all manufacturers when it comes to monitors. Suprisingly, some of their other products are excellent (like SSDs for example). I guess these are completely different factories with completely different quality control processes.

Great work, Tim. A thorough analysis laid out really well. I really appreciate the fact you're willing to call them out on things like the deception on that cheat mode for brightness in tests, as well as the scan line issues. It takes more than a cursory glance to pick all these things out sometimes... Most other monitor reviews I've seen seem to only talk about features without checking the actual functionality.
2 years ago I bought a set of 3 Odyssey G7's, (which cost about $2700 at the time). And all 3 of them had major defects, scan lines, flickering, dead pixels, randomly turning off and on for a few seconds. So I contacted Samsung about it because it seemed like a firmware issue to me. And the Samsung rep told me they wouldn't be providing firmware updates (which they luckily came back on, because the firmware updates have made these problems less frequent.) But they also told me, AND I QUOTE: "Just buy the new model once that comes out." So apparently, if I give them $2700, they give me something that doesn't work, and they expect me to give them another $4500 for a product that has the same f****** issues! This is absolutely unacceptable.
That's Samsung quality for you. I'd avoid them like the plague.

The main issue I've had with my G7 is burn in, which I was quite surprised to see after less than a year of ownership. I've never had burn in on any other LCD panel I've used over the years. Samsung's quality control is a mess, which is really frustrating when their technology is so impressive and compelling. Aside from the burn in I've been blown away by the performance of this panel, it's the best LCD I've ever seen in terms of overall performance, which just makes the QC failures all the more tragic.
@@harbingerdawn This is so strange, I've never heard of VA panel burn-in in my life. Sometimes, especially bad examples of IPS panels can get temporary image retention, but even they don't get anything permanent, and VA is especially resistant even to temporary image retention. But anyway, I believe you, it's just such a strange issue. Did your burn in go away eventually or is it still there?

I was so afraid after I had seen the Hardware Unboxed review after pre-ordering the Neo G8. I was going to cancel it, but I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did. I might be lucky to have gotten a good panel or something cause the monitor is amazing and I have never seen any of the issues (such as scanlines) appearing. The HDR looks ridiculous, and when gaming at 4K with high refresh rates things just look insane...
When you run a dark scene do you see it? I Had one for a really long time, and when I was playing Elden Ring in some of the darker areas with dark armor on, I thought something was actually wrong with the screen. When I go into e.g. windows dark mode and look at my chrome tabs, I can clearly see the scanlines now.

@@00SaltsI heard there may be different panel variants, but don't know how true those rumours are. yep, the monitor is always set to 240hz, but i switch between HDR and non HDR depending on on the content I watch or play. Only issue I found is watching non HDR content with HDR off makes everything look brighter and better, but when I watch HDR content it looks amazing with it switched on. If u have a warranty or can exchange it, maybe give it a shot. Super happy with mine and knowing I'm future proofed for a good couple of years 😊
@@lazyreuvin That HDR experience is because windows kind of sucks at HDR sometimes, its not the monitors fault you have to switch between it on and off depending on the program. When it works it sure works though.
I know this is almost a year old but I just wanted to mention that it's blues and oranges on the G8 that really show the scanlines. A solid black image is almost never going to show any signs.
Tim, can you please try some custom refresh rates on the Neo G8 to find at what refresh the scan lines disappear? Custom Resolution Utility is useful for that.
Late reply, but this seems to be a cable based issue. I had the G8 and didn't see any scan lines at all at 4K, 10 bit color and 240hz. When I used the DisplayPort cable that was in the box, I saw the scan lines. But granted, they were nearly impossible to spot unless you were only around 1ft away from the display or closer. And again, once I used a true DisplayPort *1.4a* cable (with higher DSC bandwidth), there were absolutely zero scan lines.

@@Kizzster Nope. On PC, DSC is not supported over HDMI. So you have to use a DisplayPort 1.4a cable. I happened to find one on Amazon labeled as a DisplayPort 2.0 cable (but the description says that it has 80Gbps DSC bandwidth - which is 2.5x that of DisplayPort 1.4a's bandwidth lol). So heck, maybe I've just been getting lucky with that specific cable's high as heck DSC bandwidth range...

@@Kizzster Just because the cable supports said bandwidth doesn't mean that the PC does over that protocol =). Not everything you see on the internet is correct, kind sir. On PC, you will currently need to use DisplayPort. New consoles have to use HDMI 2.1 to reach that much newer 120hz mode.
Would love an updated comparison now that there have been some firmware updates that appear to have fixed the scanline issues with the G8.
Where have you seen that the scan line issues were fixed? Rtings shows as of their January firmware update nothing was fixed.

People (like me) fell for "good spec" but with such number of issues you will totally regret buying it. BTW I tried to replace my unit 3 times and Samsung refused it! Bought both the G7 and AW2721D. Returned the G7 because of all the problems with the G7. If you can't use the monitor at 240 Hz without scan lines then that's a problem.
Way better off buying a competitor over Samsung.

Yeah I got a G7 and its the best monitor ive owned in my life. Absolutely crazy good HDR and blacks for a non oled. Gets really bright. Its unlike anything else i've used and no risks of burn in.

I originally used the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 for 4K 240hz gaming while playing Apex Legends. For an entire year i used the Neo G8 for for all purposes gaming,office work etc. But towards the end of 2023 when the 540h monitor was announced I bought it and now I use the the 540hz monitor solely for gaming while i primarily use the Neo G8 for office work , web browing and overall content consumption

The Games run perfect for me along with high graphics like 4K while maintaing high framerates like 240hz & now in some games like Call of Duty a full stable 540fps.. PC GAMING is amazing & I'll never buy another console again. The only thing I miss about console is the community, the overall people I encounted are so fun and down to earth compared to the PC community. Then again the Demographics plays a huge part in community so i understand , but still I miss them. Alot say PC lobbies are too hard and do not want to play anymore

At the moment you cant create any custom resolution on the G8, the option is jus greyed out in the Nvidia control panel

As an owner of the g8, I think it’s more about principle when you consider the price you’re paying. $1200 shouldn’t cut any corners or sacrifice qc to beat opponents in the market. I got lucky with mine at my local microcenter, was ready to return but all has been well. Biggest complaint is the additional lag from using vrr and/or local dimming.

You should consider going to RTings if you want TV reviews. Hardware Unboxes only deals with smaller depth reviews for select monitors they evaluate.
One persistent problem I have had with the Neo G8 is that it won't allow booting in HDMI 2.0. You either have to boot in HDMI 1.4 and then switch to HDMI 2.0 or (oddly) open the OSD and then reboot. I have seen this annoying quirk mentioned elsewhere. Happens with all cables, many graphics card and systems. The OSD is not that easy to get to (like if you have a soundbar).
UA-cam is being so finnicky, every time I go to a hardware unboxed or monitor unboxed video too soon after posting, the video just fails to load :/

If you are feeling bored you could test CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) out with an AMD card. It is only locked for Nvidia cards. See how far you can push a G7 till scanlines appear (or lower Hz on the G8 until they dissappear).
@- FireFly Can you make a screenshot? Everyone so far who has/had this monitor said that you cant set a 200Hz/4K resolution (for example) on the G8. On the other hand, i have proof of a 6900XT user who overclocked his Neo G7 to 200Hz/4K:

@- FireFly I know there is an option in the GUI. People reported that the refreshrate setting is locked on their G7/G8. They could only set a custom resolution in there. Not the Hz.
5:55 actually, you can, you need to just use Custom Resultion Utility. It can set your display's refresh rate to pretty much any arbitrary refresh rate you want if a display physically can display that, like 163.25 Hz.
he literally stated "very easily" most will not use that utility and should not be expected to at the asking price for the monitor

Since someone buying this monitor is a gaming enthusiast and well used to driver instals, afterburner, pc monitoring, bios updates etc, CRU is an acceptable solution. I just hope I don't need it !

This is the first time I buy Samsung products but I would say I fell in love with this monitor in overall.
The biggest drawback to this monitor though is its viewing angle like I've never seen any other display as bad as G8.

Any chance we can get a similar comparison video between MSI MAG274QRF-QD and MSI MAG274QRX? They're 2 of your most recommended 27" 1440p monitors but this particular comparison wasn't brought up in the MAG274QRX review IIRC. I wonder if choosing the 240hz is a no brainer or if there could be enough good reasons to choose the MAG274QRF-QD despite the lower refresh rate.

Try Neo G9, it’s a mess! Mine still doesn’t show HDR properly after 3 firmware updates. Do yourself a massive favour and just stay away from Samsung. Never mind the popping sounds that my monitor makes every 20 seconds driving me insane.
unfortunately it is a lottery, with my neo g9 I received it without any problem.
I'm not saying that there can't be problems but we must recognize that if it arrives without problems it is a beautifull monitor.
I may be an outlier, but I've got a Neo G8 and there are no scanlines at 240 Hz. I got this off an open box offer on BestBuy and I paid $150 less than MSRP. I'm pretty happy with the monitor.
I guarantee you, you have scanlines. Look at the blue circle on the blue windows volume slider at 240hz and you will. See. White horizontal lines, they are gone at 120hz. I didn't see it for the longest till I looked close. But it has. No. Effect on gaming at all
@@Citizen_of_the_Verse - It is certainly possible the scanline issue is not as widespread as you or this channel claim it to be. Pepis' monitor could be an unaffected sample.
Samsung and scanlines, name a more iconic duo. My ultrawide iiyama that has the samsung VA panel also suffers from scanlines.
Personally, I'll avoid both of these monitors, purely for the QA problems. Come on, Samsung, you're a huge company that makes incredible products. But I need assurance that the one I buy won't be a piece of crap!
Sorry to say this, but if you buy the G7/G8, it will definitely be a piece of crap. Quality control literally does not exist over there at Samsung. Just buy the Sony M9 and call it a day. That's what I decided to do in the end, after hearing numerous complaints from users who actually bought these G7/G8 monitors. Too bad, because I really like the idea of the fast VA panel.

It would be nice if Samsung took care of these terrible QA issues in next generation of these monitors. These are one of the best displays on market that no one should buy because there is huge chance that you'll get display with tons of issues. 32" 4K, high refresh, good response times and good HDR experience - that's perfect monitor for me, just fix these QA issues and give us flat panel option, if it may help they can even reduce refresh rate of "budget model" to 120Hz (or 144Hz) - realistically no one cares if they get their 4K screen at 120 or 165Hz.
With rting review though, the G7 seems to have the same contrast as your G8 so it's probably not the G8 spesific issue but just Samsung general QC issue.
That said, with the scanline issue, I don't if people should consider it even if it cost the same or very near to that of G7. Seems like just a waste of money (although better tuning across all refresh rate range is probably more useful than 165 hz vs 120 hz)
Why didn't you just test a custom res on the G8 at 165 for an apple with apples compare?

As someone who just purchased a Neo G8 and am getting more and more annoyed by the very obvious scanlines in day to day use and even gaming (mainly UI elements and coloured text, blues, orange, pinks, yellows and even some green) I have tried everything to get rid of them, every setting, every configuration. 120hz with VRR Control on = Scanlines. 240hz no matter what = Scanlines but what I found VERY interesting is if you set the monitor to any refresh rate & any resolution at under 240hz, even 60hz, you have no scanlines as expected but if you change the display size in the OSD to anything but fullscreen/Wide/Auto so for example 27in/23in. Bam. Scanlines.
This indicates it's not purely a refresh rate issue. I believed it was a limitation of either the display/cable/DisplayPort/DSC but being able to get scanlines at a low refresh rate and even low resolution must mean otherwise. I contacted Samsung about it and they told me to get a replacement. I have a sneaky suspicion my replacement will have the same problems. I'm going to try custom refresh rates with a third party program as at 240hz it's locked out in NVCP.
Keep me updated on this as I was planning to get the Neo G8. I hope this is simply a bad unit that once replaced - will not have any problems.

I've had a G8 for about a month now. Have none of the issues you are referring too. No scan lines at 240hz, no wobbly stand. I cannot speak to the brightness and how many nits, what I do know is that its bright enough to burn your retinas! lol. I'm absolutely made up with it. 240hz in 4k, albeit with DLSS is absolutely insane looking. I cannot imagine a better gaming experience. So I can only assume they have either fixed the issues or you just got a dodgy one, or I just got a goodun!?
I just got my Neo g8. The Scanline is very very subtle. You have to really focus on one icon with specific color to visualize it, but it does exist on mine. Again very subtle.

I use a CX just for PC gaming and a Gigabyte m28u 4K monitor for desktop usage.
No issues on my Neo G8 for now (no scanlines or flickers), I am only hoping it will last for at least a couple of years until we see high refresh rate 32" 4K QD-OLEDs popping up, I dislike ultrawide.
What about people who wants to stick with 16:9 and nothing over 32"?

RTING's review and even other channels like Viktors Reality and JoelsterG4K seems to show the opposite, Neo G8 looking better than the Neo G7 in brightness and motion (e.g. RTING's Early Access test results and Viktor's observations).

Viktors Reality is a Samsung shill. The monitor has glaring issues but it receives nothing but praise from that dumb channel. Not to mention his testing method is just cranking brightness and displaying the same image. Amateur.

I do have some questions about these monitors. Does the Neo G7 exhibit any blooming when using HDR in comparison to the Neo G8? Some reviewers are mentioning that the Neo G7 has blooming (and worse black levels, could be the coating) when compared to the Neo G8.
I want to get the Neo G7 because the scanlines on the Neo G8 are unacceptable, but if it has worse blooming or black levels than I might just skip these. THX :D

Both monitors will have some blooming, its impossible to not have blooming on a non-oled panel, even with the huge amount of local dimming these monitors have. I have seen both in person and they both have about as perfect blacks as you could possibly expect from this type of panel. They are excellent panels, but the G7 overall seems like the better buy here, for the exact reasons in this video. The G7 I now own has better blacks than my Sony x90J full array TV, which already had great blacks. The non-glossy coating though will make the blacks not feel quite as dark as a glossy panel coating though, but thats the trade off for anti glare.
I am looking forward to the review of the Philips 27B1U7903 which features 2304 local dimming zones and AU Optronics AHVA (M270QAN05.0) panel. In a Chinese review, which you can find on YT, they state that its the best mini led display they've tested.

I have a g8 and have compared it against my xg27aqm and compared 240, 120, and 60 hz and I can not see any differences. No scanlines. I think this is a panel lottery issue.

Exactly. But it seems that Samsung SSD facility is actually a different manufacturing site with different quality control standards. Samsung makes great SSDs and great phones, but their monitors are absolute trash and nobody should be buying them.
Samsung phones are the only products I trust. Their appliances (washers, dryers, fridges) all have issues too, very widespread.

Samsung makes the whole package, both NAND chips and controllers. Also, we're way past the age of hard drives, but the ones Samsung was making were incredibly reliable. I bought one in 2002, used it for 5 years and then sold it to a friend. When we had a chat he told me the drive still works perfectly fine. It has been fucking 20 years, it still works, and it's not even an enterprise product made for servers or 24/7 operation, it's just a regular consumer HDD made for home use.

My NEO G7 had scanlines even at 120hz and terrible screen uniformity at grey/white screen so i returned. You're still playing the panel lottey for the neo g7

Hey, a kinda-sorta-related question: do you have any plans to review any of AOC's MiniLED monitors, either of the 1440p ones or the 2160p Porche Design one?
burn in, edge lit dimming, ips glow, gray blacks, abysmal contrast ratio are all one big defect to me, far worse than the scanlines on G8 where I need to use S22 Ultra and zoom in on it or when I bang on the desk with force the monitor wobbles.
For real, I'm no particular Samsung fanboy, but this monitor is SO SO SO much better than the typical recommended high end IPS ones it's not even funny. One single defect at a particular HZ (which I'd only use for gaming anyway, where it's just not noticeable) is worth it. Not going back.

Does anyone else have scanline issues with Neo G7 at 165hz or adaptive sync on?😢
The best all-rounder is the Samsung QN90A (not the 43" iteration, don't bother with the QN90A 43", it's a different panel all together). The 50" is now a great price, has HDMI 2.1, 120hz VA mini LED, 1500 nits (2000 nits for 55" upwards) and is less than £600. I have one and the C2 42". The QN90A is the only panel to come close the C2 in terms of HDR wowness. However, to combat the C2 Samsung recently released the QN90B; it has a 43" 144hz 2000 nits VA panel but is currently marginally more expensive than the C2. Judging by the price reduction of the QN90A, in less than a year I imagine the QN90B will be the panel to own very soon. Better HDR than the G7/8 and as close to C2 HDR ability as currently possible without any of the problems - without factoring in HDR the QN90B is better in practically every sense.
Why don't tech channels talk about these other TVs if they're mentioning LG?
BTW I own all the TVs I mention, as well as the QN700B, which is brilliant for gaming, if you can put up with a 55" - effectively the Samsung Ark but 8K. 4k on a 55" 8k panel looks so much cleaner and crisper than 4k on a 42" C2, too. The HDR isn't as good as OLED but it's pretty damn good. If Samsung made a 43" 8K I'd use it as a monitor. BTW the QN700B can be calibrated using Samsung's app and the results are in the margin of error vs manual calibration.

The normal G7 has the exact same scanline issue. Yes, it's gone with the 120hz mode but at the cost of a much more noticable overshoot... Samsungs 240hz Panel is just bad... No issues like that on the 165hz G5 Panel.
The thing is looking at the spec's etc is only part of the picture. I recently decided to get a new monitor after 14 years my 1080p panel needed replaced. I waited for 2k 240hz IPS panel's to come out, went and tested including the neo G7 and IPS panels in the end the original G7 was the best fit for me given my usage. price wasn't a factor but saving hundreds sure was a bonus.
This is good advice, the older g7 of course isnt as good as the neo, but its roughly half the price. It's also gotten a refresh and has really good performance. My cousin has one and also really likes it.
2k is 1080p. Stop trying to call 1440p 2k.

I just buy G7 and it`s amazing but there is one BIG PROBLEM! If adaptive synch is set to on in monitor settings then you get no signal when you turn on your pc. Monitor get`s signal only if you change your displayport cable to other port in GPU.(pc in off) I have new pc, rtx 3080ti and so on, there is no any problem. If you go to monitor settings and turn adaptive synch off, then it "works normally" but then you must turn on & off adaptive synch every time when you go to windows and want to use it. You must remember turn adaptive synch off if you don`t want to go on your knees every time and chande dp port cable place in GPU if you have adaptive synch on in your monitor settings. I tried many different dp port cables, no help. If you use hdmi then it works (as it must work) even adaptive synch is enebled but you get only 120hz so no thanks...(no 120hz if you play with pc and you have 165hz monitor) I think that this dp port must work sameway like this hdmi? I mean that you don`t must go to set adaptive synch manually every time...

LG 32GQ950 review please? Hoping for a good dual use monitor option. Neo G7 / G8 (curve, qc issues, low max SDR brighness ~350 nit) and QD-OLED monitors (pixel layout, low max SDR brightness ~250 nit) are all too compromised for desktop use to be good dual use options.
That LG is trash. It has a fan inside (God why?) and edge-lit dimming. Just buy Sony M9 and call it a day. Unfortunately, it's not available in 32" size.

Again with the neutered HDMI "2.1" on monitors costing over $1200 in 2022...incredibly unacceptable. Can't be bothered to spend the few bucks extra for proper controller hardware? People buying won't be doing so to pair up with game consoles. They will be enthusiasts with 3090s and 6900XTs that support a full 48Gb/s output looking to get the most out of their expensive hardware. Don't get me started on the obnoxious unnecessary curve...

When you use adaptive sync you can’t use low input lag function it’s washed out so you can’t select it
How many milliseconds is it in this mode when playing on the PlayStation 5 do you know what the input lag is on adaptive sync compared to having adaptive sync off and low input lag on . What’s the difference between the two as far as milliseconds?
The reason I asked this is because you can’t have them both on together so I wanna know what the better choices because with adaptive sync on you can use VRR on the ps5 but with it off, you can use low input lag mode but can’t use VRR on your PS5 . Just want to know this because I play first person shooters and I want the quickest response time so adaptive sync on or adaptive sync off and low lag on what do you recommend?

@@ezclapper4205 At first the curvature of the monitor seems a bit wild but you soon get used to it and its great to have open tabs on it, kinda like a book. The HDR is really nice and the colours do pop when viewing HDR content. Video games look lush as well as having the165hz and the colours in non HDR are still very good. I use an imac for productivity to get the best all round colour though when editing images and video but if you want a good gaming and cinema experience, this is a really good monitor. I think the price has come down as well since I bought mine. No regrets, very sweet monitor.

Please review the ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQ I think its a solid monitor (as far as rtings says anyways). It would be awesome if you reviewed it so I can have a second professional opinion on it. I originally wanted to purchase and LG 27GP850-b but the poor contrast held me back from doing so. I then looked into the ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM, but the $900 Canadian price tag was far too much and the features and specs were far too excessive for what I need, I don't need the 240 something hz the ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM has, which lead me to finding the ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQ which seems like an awesome middle ground for $550 Canadian. ( its on sale currently on amazon Canada)
If there is a 28" variant with the same specs of the Neo G7 without the gamer aesthetic, it would be my dream monitor.
The G7 has the most muted gamer aesthetic and you can turn the lights on the front off completely.

One thing that doesn't get mentioned much is the G8 AR film is VERY aggressive. So much so, it actually significantly blurs the pixels so that 4K clarity isn't as sharp on it versus the G7 and other monitors.
I noticed something like this just from viewing them back to back at Microcenter. G7 seemed more clear.

I had scan lines on my G7 too. However, I recently figured out that, at least for me, changing the Black Equalizer in the monitor's settings fixed the issue. By default, mine came set at 14 and when I set it to 12, the scanline issue went away. I only found this out recently after having the monitor and dealing with the scanline issue for months. Now I'm extremely happy with it again, just wish I found this out sooner haha.
