2011 was a weird year in women's tennis. Henin retired for the second time, Serena was injured, and Sharapova really failed to capitalize on the lack of rivals. There was no real leader in women's tennis and it allowed for a couple journeywomen to win a slam. Good for them, I suppose, but the absence of some big names on the tour led to a lacklustre period in women's tennis - one that continues to this day in my opinion.
Serena was injured after 2010 Wimbledon and came back in 2011. Actually during the period Kim Clisters won two GS titles the rest belonged to Azarenka Kvitova and Li Na who later all won their second GS title I think they are no less than Amelie Mauresmo or Marie Pierce . For me the four are definitely not journey women if not some big names seen from today. But Kim was one of the big names then even for Serena (As for Henin she was already quite average like Venus at that time Her second retirement was just shocking but not that relevant to the tennis). So this period was probably not that bad as you think because most of them except Stosur (probably the only journey woman here as Schiavone won her GS title in 2010 French open when Serena Henin Cljisters Sharapova all the big names competed ) continued to get more GS titles later. At least this period could be compared to 2004 when Myskina Kuznetsova and Sharapova emerged. I don't think Miskina or Kuznetsova are better than Azarenka Kvitova or Li as a whole
