When I watched Spacey a few years back in this movie I was absolutely knocked out. I've never seen an actor actually become the person he/she is portraying before and Spacey did. It was sublime stuff and easily the best piece of acting I've seen, not to mention the singing and dancing aspects of his performance. Wonderful.
Kevin Spacey did a great tribute to Bobby Darin using his own voice…….. love this song but for me Bobby's version is the very best. Bobby had something extremely exceptional that no one else has ever been able to tap into, nor can they. There is only one Bobby Darin the likes of whom we shall never see again. Bobby made a remarkable hit with this song and it is still played on radio today along with "Beyond The Sea", "Dream Lover" and many others. A master genius who accomplished so much in his short life that others wished they could have in their longer lives.
Bang on the money, I watched a singer song writer and guitarist going through a performance of Bobby Darin, the conclusion being that Darin was unbelievably clever in technique and delivery his ability to change key effortlessly and he makes it look easy. I just love everything he ever did.
Spacey's homage was legit, and shows tremendous talent. But I agree, he just couldn't replicate that unique and elusive quality that made Bobby Darin so beloved as a performer.

this was a great movie and a great performance by Kevin Spacey. my 10 yo son and I saw the movie together and he loved 'beyond the sea' and was mesmerized by the dance scenes. when he asked how they did that I just said 'it's called choreography son, and when it's done well it's a beautiful thing'.

He clearly loves the great Bobby Darin,as do I, and his impersonation is quite uncanny. Comparisons are bound to be made,however,and he could have avoided the negative comments by just singing under his own name. HeavyMental Keyser Soze portrayal probably my fave but the thing is everything he does is pure class. His tv interviews are more entertaining and versatile than anyone else. By rights he should have an ego the size of the moon given his abilities instead he's humble and gracious. As I keep saying the guy is pure class.

I am a huge fan of Kevin Spacey ever since I saw 'The Usual Suspects' and have since then seen nearly every movie he's played a major role in. This is one of the movies I haven't watched yet, and I plan to do so soon. Many people don't like Kevin because they claim he's an "Egotist", particularly for this movie (He played the lead, directed, and co-wrote it). But I say 'Who Cares?' Kevin has a right to believe that he is awesome... Especially seeing that he is.

@Dapdoi Ardon Hey Ardon, although it was and is known he is an absolute psychopath in real life, the way he can show that on screen unlike any other actor is legendary, Its like method acting, Kevin Spacey is one of my favorite actors, and take his alter ego/character Lester Burnham is the best example, he wasn't really acting during American Beauty, he was kind of just being himself, that's what makes him so great, Yeah what he has done is wrong but I could care less, you gotta understand he is still an amazing actor and I fully support him in future movies, regardless of how evil a man he is in real life.
Although "Beyond The Sea" was uneven in terms of overall quality, the performance of Kevin Spacey as Darin was extraordinary in capturing his style and his charisma as an entertainer. Spacey accomplished a tremendously difficult achievement in singing Darin's songs without resorting to lip synching to his recordings as Larry Parks did in "The Jolson Story" or Jaime Foxx did in "Ray".
In defense of Parks and Foxx, Al Jolson and Ray Charles had very distinctive voices. Bobby Darin was certainly a great singer, but his voice isn't as singular or immediately identifiable as the other two, or someone like Frank Sinatra. I think his real appeal was in his stage persona/showmanship, style etc.. In a similar vein, Beverly D'Angelo appeared as Patsy Cline in Coal Miner's Daughter and did the vocals herself, as did Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn.

This is terrific. Didn't know Kevin could sing. The nice thing is how he captures Bobby's familiar and engaging style, like he's performing in your living room. I think its up there with Sinatra's, Bobby's, and Ella's (here 1960 in Berlin being my personal fav). This is really good.

I thought I'd messed up in memory, but reading some comments I got it right. My Dad had jazz omnibus 1938 and Louis Armstrong did this. I thought it was just a misprint of the year. Love all the versions of this song. Spacey is a great impersonator and actor too. Darin was just a great entertainer, and Armstrong was just fantastic in his generation for entertaining and stretching the bounds of society. I wish Darin and Armstrong could be around today to show some of the youth some class.

@Dapdoi Ardon Hey Ardon, although it was and is known he is an absolute psychopath in real life, the way he can show that on screen unlike any other actor is legendary, Its like method acting, Kevin Spacey is one of my favorite actors, and take his alter ego/character Lester Burnham is the best example, he wasn't really acting during American Beauty, he was kind of just being himself, that's what makes him so great, Yeah what he has done is wrong but I could care less, you gotta understand he is still an amazing actor and I fully support him in future movies, regardless of how evil a man he is in real life.

Although "Beyond The Sea" was uneven in terms of overall quality, the performance of Kevin Spacey as Darin was extraordinary in capturing his style and his charisma as an entertainer. Spacey accomplished a tremendously difficult achievement in singing Darin's songs without resorting to lip synching to his recordings as Larry Parks did in "The Jolson Story" or Jaime Foxx did in "Ray".
In defense of Parks and Foxx, Al Jolson and Ray Charles had very distinctive voices. Bobby Darin was certainly a great singer, but his voice isn't as singular or immediately identifiable as the other two, or someone like Frank Sinatra. I think his real appeal was in his stage persona/showmanship, style etc.. In a similar vein, Beverly D'Angelo appeared as Patsy Cline in Coal Miner's Daughter and did the vocals herself, as did Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn.

Spacey did a great job in this role an singing, though the film was uneven , it was His lifelong project to get this film made and did a outstanding job of singing Himself an not lip sync.

fantastic talent, I enjoy his singing, his films + TV series, the guy is a great entertainer and dramatist. Such a shame of the scandal, he should still be remembered for the right reasons.

This is terrific. Didn't know Kevin could sing. The nice thing is how he captures Bobby's familiar and engaging style, like he's performing in your living room. I think its up there with Sinatra's, Bobby's, and Ella's (here 1960 in Berlin being my personal fav). This is really good.

It must be great to wake up one morning and your Bobby Darin. This is one of the greatest pieces of ".. non-acting". This and " Beyond the Sea " is about the best role Kevin Spacey ever put on. His song and dance routine is way out. As Francis Albert Sinatra would say; " Just too co-co !

I thought I'd messed up in memory, but reading some comments I got it right. My Dad had jazz omnibus 1938 and Louis Armstrong did this. I thought it was just a misprint of the year. Love all the versions of this song. Spacey is a great impersonator and actor too. Darin was just a great entertainer, and Armstrong was just fantastic in his generation for entertaining and stretching the bounds of society. I wish Darin and Armstrong could be around today to show some of the youth some class.
Tom, Louis Armstrong was one of the 20th century's greatest musicians and an extreamly important innovator. You're correct in calling him a fine entertainer, indeed he was but he was far more than that.
