The battle for the 1992 rally championship couldn't have been tighter. Before the RAC rally Toyota's Sainz had 124 points, Lancia's Kankkunen 122 and Auriol 121 points. The mentality was that the fastest man in RAC would claim the title. But despite of this Subaru's Colin McRae lead the rally after the 2nd leg. This rally meant farewells in many ways. It was the last rally for the Lancia Martini and Nissan rally teams and for Lombard as the RAC's main sponsor.
