    It’s funny, you mentioned sex appeal because when I met my now wife she thought the vault was a very lame car, but I absolutely loved it. I filled up about once a month, and that was only because I would drive to see family who were a little further away. At one point I went three months straight without using any gas it really is the best of both worlds and unfortunately I had to sell it because I was going overseas. Otherwise I never would’ve gotten rid of it.

      Bruh, don't let the gas sit in the tank for longer than a month... Gas losing octane over time and absorbing humidity is a big part of the reason the original one demanded premium

      @@ch4.hayabusa thats actually a known issue with the rav4 prime, it uses so little gas that the engine gets ruined by old gas.
      for the people who dont know, gas literally turns to gel after sitting for 6 months to a year. it might burn, but if you try to run old gas it WILL ruin either your fuel system or the engine itself and neither are cheap

      @@ch4.hayabusa The one thing about the Chevy volt is that it will cycle the engine on every once in awhile to make sure the gas isn't sitting for long periods of time. That is why even if you only do battery operation for most if not all of your drive, you'll still fill up a tank of gas every once in a while.

    The volt is the pinnacle of daily drivers. It has 90% of all of the advantages of an electric car without any of its drawbacks. They are extremely reliable, get fantastic fuel economy, and for most of your driving, you still get to drive around on electricity and save all of that money. It was peak Uber vehicle, you can run the air conditioning all day sitting in stop and go traffic without using much power, in fact you can go camping in it and run the climate control for 3 days straight and the engine will just kick on and recharge the battery as needed after the third day

      That being said, I'm not sure where you live but I live in an apartment complex. However, in California, while the landlord does not responsible for the cost, the landlord is actually legally required to allow a tenant to install an electric vehicle charger, if the tenant pays the entire cost. Where and how can be up to the landlord but he must make accommodations. Generally it's about $500 to get an electric charger installed, but you can also get away with using a regular orange extension cord out to your vehicle. Yes it will be slow but it will work fine.

      @pilotavery 3 місяці тому

      @@dragon_nammi also you're forgetting that it is a volt. Almost every store, strip mall, and doctor's office you go to has chargers now, depending on where you go. At least they do in California. There are more buildings with chargers than there are without. So even if it's just running on gas, if you go to a local store and plug in or go to your school and plug in or go to work and plug in, you're still getting free fuel. And then it still switches to gas after.

About the only cars in that price range that aren't going to be completely destroyed are Gen 1 and Gen 2 Priuses and Camry hybrids, Ford Escape hybrids, and Honda's hybrids. Your points about Hybrids being the best of both worlds is true. But what’s even better for everyone, even other people hellbent on driving, is safe alternatives to driving. Accessible public transport and cycling - you said it yourselves, our journeys are predictable and short, so why must we have an expensive car for those regular trips?

    • @onespeed3134
      @onespeed3134 4 місяці тому +4

      There will NEVER be adequate infrastructure for everyone. A lot of people live really far away from the big cities, and all of them will still need a car to get to the train/metro/bus station.
      I hate the "hellbent on driving" take. Not everyone lives in a city, 5 minutes away from a grocery store. Driving sucks, I wish I didn't have to drive but the nearest costco is an hour an a half comute if im lucky. I do groceries once a month. I am phisically unable to haul 7 bags of food on a train/bus. I'd have to walk 6 hours to get to nearest metro station to then use it to get to work. It would add about four hours to my comute most days if i had to wait for and take the bus to get to work. This is absolute madness.
      The idea of driving being a luxury and not an absolute nessesity for a LOT of people reeks of privilege. And "just add infrastructure" is just impossible when you live even just a little far away from the major cities where most of the jobs are.

I never had a car buying experience like that! Back in 2017, I was seriously considering buying a Volt. I didn't want a fully electric vehicle because I do long road trips often. I felt that the Volt was the perfect compromise. However, even though the dealership had Volts sitting there, on the lot, ready to be sold. They had zero interest in selling one. I stood near it, read the window sticker, leaned over to look in the windows. Essentially, sending all the signals in full view of the sales team. Not one person came out to ask me if I was interested. I went inside and asked a sales person (who was doing nothing) about the Volt and he pointed at the pamphlet rack and said, "There's some stuff right there." And went back to doing nothing.
    Needless to say, I didn't buy a Volt.

Add to that there were two trips that were near to or over 200 miles where I had to buy gas. If I hadn't taken those two trips, it would be even less $. I sold my Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L that was getting ~15mpg around town, if I was lucky. I was filing up at Sam's every week @ 45-50 bucks per tank. I'd guess the dealerships are more at blame based on my experience at multiple Chevy dealers when I was looking for a car in 2018. The sales teams could not or would not answer questions on the Volt/Bolt and aggressively tried to sell me trucks and SUVs even though I said I was looking for a car. I couldn't even get a test drive of the volt/bolt.

The dealer bought out my lease with 3 months left, I made 3 grand and they got a hot car with low mileage to put on their lot, win/win. Great cars! Not gonna win any speed awards, but it had fantastic smart cruise control and emergency features (even saved me once when somebody rolled their truck right in front of me on the freeway), it was comfortable, got incredible gas mileage and I could tool around town all I wanted without ever burning a single drop of gas (up to 50 miles on electric). There are countless examples through GM's history of doing this crap, great engineers make and develop something and the bean counters kill the project because they can't figure out how to sell it. The fiero was killed right as it hit development peak and finally selling, ruining Saturn by forcing them to rebadge GM crap instead of making their own cars, the entire handling of the modern cadillac brand, all the holden's they brought to NA, the original EV project.

    I passed up the opportunity to buy a 2018 Volt LT recently. In doing my due diligence and researching what is know about the 2nd gen Volt, I kept bumping into problems with the battery energy control module, problems that rendered the car inoperable. I couldn’t find information on how many Volts had this problem, but I decided that it was a risk I wasn’t willing to take. I am very sorry I had to pass on the car I looked at, because I really liked it, it was fun to drive, and looked great, too. Apparently, the 2019 models haven’t had this issue, so I may yet buy a Volt, if I can find one in my price range.

    This is what should be subsidized, not complete electric with batteries or even hydrogen.
    Use the batteries for when in cities, use the fuel engine for free way and to recharge the internal batteries for the electric engine.
    this means cities will be quieter and have better air quality and you do not have range anxiety on the freeway and if you run out
    of energy you can just recharge yourself with the internal generator . .
    and you can say you drive a german u-boat with it being diesel-electric . .

Same money, when it was new, could either get you a Skoda Superb plug-in hybrid or a 4wd diesel. Pretty much the same power, very different propulsion. And let me tell you - when overtaking in a plug-in hybrid, that electric boost is very significant and very useful. But if you have no access to home charging, don't bother

    ideally it would be a small displacement diesel generator designed to supplement batteries/motors, but the epa hates diesels with a passion so we dont see any like the rest of the world...

    I've owned a 2014 volt for about three years. The range on battery is too low and that typical GM quality problem (especially with electronics) is a huge problem. I still love it. In three years I've used about 30 gallons of gas and the only repairs I've made have been due the crappy little generator they call an engine, not including the broken NAV system because I can't find a dealership that will touch it. And it's technically not a hybrid, its a full electric with a range extending generator. I need a new car badly but I don't think I can trust GM to make a quality product when they seem so focused on the money they make on repairs.
