    When Kazakhstan belonged to Russia, young Kazakhs were forced by the Russian Empire to leave their homes and fight for many years until they were completely slaughtered. The story of one of these young people, who marches desperately into a war that is not his, in addition to the sadness of leaving his parents, elderly, with no one to take care of and the certainty that he will never see the mountains (“tau”) of Kazakhstan again, generated this wonderfully sad song! In addition to Dimash's talent, we have a wonderful setting and two fantastic musicians: Olzhas - Master in playing the Qobyz (Kobyz, which looks like a violin) the other who plays the "Rainstick"! A supernatural journey to the plains of Kazakhstan, through Music!

    I'm so glad that I have become a fan of Dimash, not just for his beautiful voice but for the fact that I'm getting to hear all the beautiful Kazakh folk music that I have been missing out on. I love that the Kazakh people are so loyal to their history & traditions. Dimash sings them so beautifully and conveys the emotion so well, as he always does & the instruments really set the mood too. Fabulous! Thank you for reacting to these wonderful songs 🎵 ❤️ I love both versions equally 💕

    The second performance was from his digital show, put on during covid. No audience. They just showed scenes from previous concerts with audiences applauding etc, inbetween songs. We paid ten or twenty dollars to see the concert, which we watched at the same time, no matter what country you were in, so all us dears together could have the same experience. I think it lasted ninety minutes and he performed old favourites and four new songs, did new backdrops, outfits and arrangements. No expense spared. And a lot of the profits went to charity. He has since been releasing each of the songs.

    Great reaction, thank you! This song never fails to get me teary, and twice in a row is a lot.
    You were wondering how they did the special effects.... this was during the height of the pandemic, so it was an online live-streamed concert. Because of that, they did the whole concert in Augmented Reality, so a blend of practical effects (like the screen behind him, some smoke and mist on some songs) and digital effects placed live (and thus needing to be able to account for camera movements, camera changes, and Dimash's movements, sort of like how a sports broadcast places lines and callouts on-screen even though it's live and unscripted).
    In another song, there are whales floating around above him. It's incredible!

    Two songs that would elicit dimash emotion to The point of him crying. This samaltau and daidadau. He first sung it in I a.m singer in China. He said, The result of The competition doesnt matter. His ultimate aim is to sing his native song to The world. So when he sung daidadau, he was fiulfilled. The story is about a poet who was imprisoned and his was informed that his wife was seeing someone else. His best performance was in bastau, in his Channel its adai and daidadau combined. Please watch till The end. Even after The song was over. In New York concert he cried for he said “dreams do come true”. But I really Love The bastau daidadau version for he went full Kazakhstan gear, instrumentation and musician.

    Thank you Stratele, for these reactions. Both were worthy of Grammys. This music is what Dimash wants to do. He wants to introduce the world to both his culture and also to mix his culture with pop. I’ve always been afraid of What America would do to him after that singing competition worlds best put him against children when they told him they would not do. So then after that Dimash did a concert in NYC at the Barclays Center. But, look he hasn’t been back. Youre a producer you know things about American producers. They just use and abuse singers up and steal artist songs. Dimash has had a taste of what can happen. Dimash is independent and has a father that is a producer. The first song was for the Tokyo jazz festival. The 2022 jazz festival - Dimash learned his 15 language performance of Ikanaide. The breathing techniques could only have been done by Dimash. No pop singer even classical singer could do it.

    Samaltau means “mountain breeze” and the first version was during the quarantine from Dimash home studio with those two musicians only. Dimash is a master of storytelling, he can take you there where this situation took place. The gentleman playing the Kobyz is master Olzhas Qurmanbeck, the best player in Kazakhstan 🎻🔝 Kobyz is an ancient tool of the people who lived in the East, including nomads. It was used in ancient times by steppe shamans-healers for various rites. Kobyzy is made from a single piece of wood. This is one of the oldest ways of making musical instruments in the history of mankind. It is not due to technical backwardness or the lack of metal devices. According to the ancient beliefs of many people, only in a single piece will the living singing soul of the tree remain, which will sound in the instrument. The open body and strings of the kobyz from a bunch of 30-60 untwisted horse hair give a very thick, overtone-rich timbre. The Kobyz is the first stringed instrument ever. The version 2021 and the special effects is great too, however I like more the version 2020, it is more mystical, the instrumentation is stunning, sometimes less is more and Dimash cross legged singing like that … amazing!!!! ❤️🔝🎤🌹🌹👏👏👏👏👏👏

    👉This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
    The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the prototype of all European string instruments.
    (Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages. Difference between Turkic and Turkish - ua-cam.com/video/PqxhtBecVeg/v-deo.html )
    A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music.
    The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing the Kobyz.

    This is a kobyz. Turkic women and men has used to play kobyz the first violin on the planet (since BC. 3000+)
    The musical scale of them differs from that of many western instruments - such as the guitar - in that it features ratios that are close to quarter tones. Turkic classical music and folk music are in the "diatonic scale". In music theory, a diatonic scale is any heptatonic scale that includes five whole steps (whole tones) and two half steps (semitones) in each octave, in which the two half steps are separated from each other by either two or three whole steps, depending on their position in the scale. There is evidence that the Sumerians used a version of the diatonic scale.
    Bowed instruments have originated in the equestrian cultures of Central Asia, an example being the Kobyz (Kazakh: қобыз) or kyl-kobyz is an ancient Turkic, Kazakh string instrument and then Mongolian instrument Morin huur: Turkic and Mongolian horsemen from Inner Asia were probably the world’s earliest fiddlers. Their two-stringed upright fiddles were strung with horsehair strings, played with horsehair bows, and often feature a carved horse’s head at the end of the neck. The violins, violas, and cellos we play today, and whose bows are still strung with horsehair, are a legacy of the nomads.
    It is believed that these instruments eventually spread to China, India, the Byzantine Empire and the Middle East, where they inspired into instruments such as the erhu in China, the rebab in the Middle East, the lyra in the Byzantine Empire and the esraj in India. The violin in its present form emerged in early 16th-Century Northern Italy, where the port towns of Venice and Genoa maintained extensive ties to central Asia through the trade routes of the silk road.
    The kobyz (kopuz) was Korkut Ata's instrument. Korkut Ata (Dede Korkut, Korkyt Ata), who played kopuz, composed musical pieces, had a super human wisdom, foresaw future, doctor recovering the sick, Great Vizier of the sovereign and was a kam, is believed to have lived near Sırderya river.) Korkut Ata is accepted as the father of Turkic music, creator of "Küy" and a legendary hero in Kazakhstan and all Turkic countries. The musical compositions are all interconnected by the epic stories that accompany them. The element encompasses social, cultural and moral values such as heroism, dialogue, physical and spiritual wellness and unity as well as respect for nature, and contains profound knowledge about the history and culture of Turkic-speaking communities. Inscribed in 2018 (13.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
    Wise women and men has used to play kobyz. The other people may also played it. It is not forbidden but hard. Wise people are called "baksı" or "kam" in old Turkic culture. They worship "Tengri" (means "God"). Kopuz imitates nature: rivers, winds, trees, wolves, eagles, etc.
    Antic Epics said that, "when the kopuz is played, the demons run away". When the kopuz is played, people chills, because evilness go away.

    I enjoyed listening to both versions(good request!) and agree that the second one WAS more emotional.The first was more of a story telling, but still with lots of feeling.The Kobyz sound like a wolf howling.It's very interesting to me to see how Dimash's mouth shape changes when he sings in Kazakh.I think I could tell without the sound, when he is singing in his native language, he has a certain look.Anyone else think so too? Could I make one small negative comment?I like your reactions alot, but I find it hard to concentrate on what you are saying, when there is background music.If it was not there, I could really focus.As it was, I had to stop listening.Also, if someone is even slightly hard of hearing, it makes it alot harder to hear what you are saying.Thanks for your Dimash reactions,from a Dear in New Zealand.

    👉 Samaltau - names a beautiful place. In Kazakhstan, many women's names have 'samal' as the first syllable.
    The first performance of this song took place, at the closing ceremony of the Silk Road International Film Festival (2019) - ua-cam.com/video/8BlSafjKujk/v-deo.html (with backround informations)
    For Dimash this song 'Samaltau' has a special spiritual meaning. This song, very well known in Kazakhstan, is sung about the hard mass of people, about their suffering. It was written when the Tsar forcibly recruited the young men from Kazakhstan during World War I. They marched endless distances. Many did not understand what to do in a foreign country. Their fields withered and their wives, children and elderly parents were left alone.
    The Tsar, then the Soviets, attacked the country and harassed, recruited and decimated the population. In 1934, after a great famine, 2 million Kazakhs had survived. Today 18 million people live in the Republic of Kazakhstan, 70% of them Kazakhs, 19% Russians and other ethnic groups.
    Dimash sang this song on the Tokyo Jazz Festival in 2020. Because of the pandemic, the annual Tokyo Jazz Festival took place online. Dimash sings 2 songs live in his home studio. :
    * SOS - ua-cam.com/video/WdKYDoqKLP8/v-deo.html
    * Samaltau - ua-cam.com/video/UvMRkiYu3Js/v-deo.html
    * Dimash Digital Show 2021- Samaltau - ua-cam.com/video/QnQbmB6KXME/v-deo.html
    Dimash also was one of the few foreigners who has been asked to attend the live online show marking the inauguration of the President of U.S.A. Joe Biden (2021). He was there as a representative of his country Kazakhstan and he was also there for his Dears from all over the world. He performed:
    * S.O.S. - ua-cam.com/video/sE-9fQTFyas/v-deo.html
    * Samaltau - ua-cam.com/video/OLrFs0WRxgY/v-deo.html

    Estos 2 videos fueron sin público, el primero fue en su estudio y el segundo fue en un concierto digital... no podía de ninguna manera haber público en el concierto digital por la pandemia de covid... Dimash quiso cantar, dar un concierto a pesar de todo y se preparó todo para que sea un éxito como lo fue, todos los videos de ése concierto están en su canal de youtube, es un artista genial, lo amo con todo mi corazón... gracias por esta reacción, me encantó.

    Great reaction,Jack!I personally prefer the stripped back Tokio Jazz Festival version,all you concentrate on are the great musicians and his vocals!That said,everything in his Digital Show from 2021 is a visual feast...and I mean EVERYTHING!Check out more songs from this,his performance of SOS here is absolutely stunning!I agree with you,the kazakh language is very beautiful and it is lovely to hear him sing in his Mother tongue!As for being able to sing amazingly whilst sitting down,check out his Arnau Concert Vocalise version of Know!You'd love it!😄...Oh,there was no audience at his Digital Concert,as this was put out during the Pandemic,he wanted to do something special for his fans,as he couldn't go anywhere(like all of us).Don't quote me on this,but I think it was the most successful Digital Concert on UA-cam so far,as he only charged 12 euros(compared with some other Artists who charged loads more)and donated everything to Charity after paying his amazing musicians and visual artists who put together an absolutely amazing show!🙂

    Hi Bud, Amazing reaction to these two performances of a traditional song. The first one 2020 was streamed live from that studio to the festival in Tokyo, the second one was from Dimash's digital show which was streamed online in Jan 2021, in the absence of any live conerts due to the pandemic. There was no audience, the stage was constructed in a gym (which also couldnt be used at that time) but there is a video on here showing a bit behind the scenes and all the electrics, computers etc plus all the people involved in the filming, sound board and special effects were all situated were the audience would have been. All the performances from the Digital show are on Dimash's YT channel, worth a look. Btw The two string Kazakh instrument is the kobyz which has featured in quite a few Dimash performances and also used in Films scores of times.👍👍😊

    👉 Rainmaker or Rainstick originally comes from northern Chile. Its origin is the very dry Atacama region, where it was first built by the Diaguitas Indians in the Elqui Valley and used for rain ceremonies. It is originally made from the copado cactus. Only dead cacti that are already lignified are used. The thorns are driven into the interior of the cactus. Then the rainmaker is filled with small pebbles and sealed at both ends.
    If you turn the rainmaker over, the small pebbles fall from one spike to the next. This creates a pleasant, even sound that is reminiscent of flowing water or the sound of thick raindrops. While in South America the medicine men wanted to lure the longed-for rain with the soft, rustling sound of the rainmaker, people enjoy the pleasant sound with its calming effect.
    The sound spectrum ranges from a fine, gentle drizzle to the mighty roar of a downpour. It 'rains' all the more persistently, the longer the rainmaker is and the more spikes block the path of the pebbles. (www)

    The second version is from his digital concert. Among his backup musicians for that concert he had two drummers and also the other percussionist who is amazing, but always gets filmed just hiting the triangle :-)
    About emotion, he has said that this is one of the most difficult songs for him to sing, that he has to prepare himself mentally, because it's about the suffering and losses of his people.

    Since you liked hearing him sing in his native language, I have a suggestion for a double reaction 😁
    "Unforgettable Day" 2017 GAKKU concert : ua-cam.com/video/u52XDilf628/v-deo.html - where he hits a *D 8* above piano range (to bounce back after a split second voice closing)
    "Unforgettable Day" 2021 : ua-cam.com/video/W5D20sNvnHY/v-deo.html - no whistle notes, but he leaves his whole heart on the stage, and throws some soul elements into the song.
    *In this order :)* This is a song he composed the music for when he was ~18 yo, and it`s one of the songs he changes up and improvises the most, from performance to performance. I would love to get your opinion on these 2 performances :) (the first one doesn`t have subtitles, but the second one does ; it`s a love balad, very beautiful ; do watch the 2017 one first, even if it doesn`t have CC, and you`ll see the lyrics in the 2021 version, the more "mature" one :) )
    P.S. The second version of Samaltau was from his Digital concert 2021, during the pandemic. That concert later got cut into separate performances and some of them became new "MVs" for those songs :) "Unforgettable Day" 2021 that I linked is also from the Digital concert :)

    The instrument is the Kobyz. It's a 2 stringed instrument, with one string made up of 75 horse hairs, and the other string made from 60 horsehairs (and the curved bow which is made with 40 horse hairs). The strings aren't pushed down to a fret, but rather are played with pressure by either the fingernail, or by a pad on the finger, as well as the tones varied by the pressure of the bow.
