When bank robberies and kidnapping became federal crimes, and the FBI which had been a prosecutorial and investigative arm of the justice department got the ability to make arrests the BOP was established and the idea that they would have strategically placed federal prisons. The original federal prisons were Lewisburg, Atlanta, Leavenworth, and Mc Neil. Mc Neil was never a state prison though. Those original federal prisons are interesting though because you can see a shift in penal philosophy in the course of building them. Leavenworth and Atlanta have the look of an imposing gothic castle, this was purposefully done to make an inmate feel small. It was designed to make an inmate feel insignificant as soon as they got there. Lewisburg was designed with rehabilitation in mind, and its architecture resembles as college campus. It’s really a beautiful institution. My grandfather was in Lorton which was a dump, when we visited him in Lewisburg as a kid my thinking was if you are a better criminal they send you to an elegant beautiful place like this. My uncle said Lompoc was the place to be because of the view. The census I hear is La Tuna is a bummer to go to because it’s so out of the way, but it’s got nothing on ADX.
