    There was likely one bad RAM chip that failed immediately from the factory, which caused this PS5 to fail QA. Your attempt at reballing worked temporarily. Obviously, replacing all the chips solved the problem. It’s too bad we don’t have something similar to MATS for Nvidia graphics cards to be able to pinpoint which RAM module has failed. Even replacing all 8 RAM chips with new preballed chips is time consuming. This was an impressive repair. Your perseverance is remarkable!

    The Cod3r on UA-cam knows a ton about ps5s. There's a bank of four caps that's common to blow and several voltage regulators. His PS5 series is pretty thorough. He was able to switch a system from disc edition to digital.

    Last weekend my launch model PS5 made a loud POP sound in the middle of a firmware update and then went completely dead. I took it apart and found the power supply was not showing 12V. So I swapped in a working PSU from my brother's console and luckily got my PS5 running just fine, despite my concern about it dying in the middle of an update. Had to give his PSU back so I bought a new replacement ADP-400DR from eBay, gonna give it a try tomorrow but I'm worried about it looking a bit different from my original one, hopefully it's a genuine part.
    Anyway, I'm glad I found your channel after my sudden PS5 disaster, you've really given me hope for my dead console (especially since Sony wants $230 to repair an out of warranty console with a no power symptom). Keep up the good work!

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  Рік тому +1

      There are knock-off copies of the PS5 power supplies, particularly the ADP-400FR. I have not seen one of the cheap copies so I can't say if they work well or not.

      @@ToltecMerc the biggest difference I've noticed is the Sony labeling is missing the bottom half (the part that says CQC and all the Chinese text), the components visible through the holes on the AC input end look very different both in size and positioning, and lastly the 2 screw holes where the PCB is visible with all the small C-shaped solder markings around them (the little C's have a lot thicker solder than the "new" one).. also the new one came without the foam spacer strips on it.
      I thought I could chalk all the differences up to changes by the OEM over the 3 years from my launch model unit to this replacement being made. With part shortages and overall design & efficiency improvements perhaps things could've changed but I'm still concerned because the eBay listing had pics that looked more like my original with the full text and the foam strips.
      I saw in one of your videos you had a PSU missing the CQC text but it was a 400FR model. And while searching on eBay I saw some with a sticker in the place of the Sony markings, but I purposely avoided those.

    impressive work done. with so many chips it is preferable to use a stencil. this oxidation always occurs with lead-free solders, only reball solves the oxidation. reflow only repairs the microcracks in the balls, there are few chances on the ram, the microcracks are mostly on the cpu where there is pressure. all the best

    Nice one mate, would be handy to know the outcome after more extensive hours/tests put in, maybe after a week or 2? I wonder if u just had 1 or more rams failing and that was the cause? replacing all of them makes it harder to know but this is where UART much like the PS4's will be needed some day.

      I would say, try both methods (balls/paste) and decide witch works better for you! I've found using balls with stencil giving more consistent results, to my liking. Paste, it it has too much flux, gets bubbly and the balls just merge all over!

    hello and congratulations My playstation 5 turns on and off right away I saw that it doesn't have any capacitors shorted but it has the R22H neighbor coils next to the processor shorted. Is it normal for them to be shorted? I'm starting to think too that the problem might be reballing the ram...

  • @alicehops
    @alicehops Рік тому +1

    I currently have a PS5 that is experiencing what happened to this one, what would you recommend to fault find to know if its the ram or not? since im not experienced in reballing and would like to know if it definitely is the issue before attempting the fix

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  Рік тому

      All you can do is try to eliminate everything else such as shorts on power rails that only come up when the console is fully powered on. I noticed the fast shutdown when I was working on a PS5 that I powered on while one RAM IC was removed. I noticed it shut down immediately and I made note of that. Bad RAM can cause all kind of weird behavior. It all depends on what part of RAM is not accessible I would guess. I don't have a magic way of determining if RAM is the issue. Sorry.
