Winter Tahr Hunting - A Tough Old Game

  • Опубліковано 19 жов 2020
  • For this hunt we set off down south head first into a wintry blast straight from the Antarctic. The plan was to spend a week exploring a catchment right at the base of the main divide of the Southern Alps in search of a mature bull tahr. During winter bull tahr grow a magnificent mane to keep them warm during the harsher months and to protect their neck whilst fighting with other bulls throughout their rutting period. This mane, combined with their hooked horns draw in hunters from around the world in search of a trophy. Watch along as we brave the elements and steep country that these animals thrive in to secure a bull worthy of the wall.

    That looked like tough country guys, well done on taking that bull! Shame about the broken horn but I guess it gives the skull a bit of a unique character. Looking forward to the next video 👍

    Choice trip lads. That first shot looks like it got him, especially with the way he carries that front leg immediately after the shot. Bloody stoked to get up there and find him I bet, nice 👍

      I'll have to have a closer look back at the footage! Couldn't believe it when Chris spotted him, huge relief. It took me on a bloody rollercoaster

    Old vid but that ledge you were walking along at 17.17 looked sketchy?, straight down if it went pear shaped.
    Enjoyed the vid as always :)

      That was actually a part of the walking track! Much safer than it may have looked, the bull retrieval was much scarier

    Juzt curious, would you use a drone to confirm a kill to save you walking such a distance just to check?

    • @southislandriflewalkers5545
      @southislandriflewalkers5545  3 роки тому +1

      That wouldn't be a bad idea to be honest, so long as you don't go in too early- animals spook at the first sight of a drone, you might end up pushing him further into the shit! Might come in handy if that situation happens again though, cheers!

    Have watched a couple of your vids guys. Nice footage. Tho you guys need to get closer before taking shots. Bit sad to see all those badly shot animals running around. Not a good image, especialy if watched by those who do not support this sort persuit.

      I see what you're saying mate, unfortunately we couldn't close the gap any further on this guy, bloody steep country up there so we were very limited as to where we could get to. As for the shot, it nailed him through the lungs, could've been a bit further forward and maybe a tad lower- took him about 25 seconds to fall. We're definitely not about seeing an animal suffer, in a perfect world we'd sack them everytime. Something we're working on though mate, cheers for the feedback.

    580 meters! Seriously. Isn't that getting a bit silly when you consider the potential for wounding and problematic recovery?

    • @southislandriflewalkers5545
      @southislandriflewalkers5545  3 роки тому +1

      In all honesty, probably a bit far. Decided to shoot cause he started climbing into some unretrievable country, we knew we could get up to where he was. Never want to see an animal suffer, haven't wounded anything since I was a young fella and I definitely want to keep it that way! Usually cap my range at ~300, easy to get a bit of confidence behind Chris's canon 😂 don't think I'll shoot at that range in a hurry again though, happy with the result this time round

      Nothing wrong with longer shots in Tahr country.
      Well done for your efforts.
