I believe Steve can easily blend a subwoofer with any pair of bookshelf loudspeakers, but blending that shirt with his pants - truly amazing. Great shirt, Steve.
What would be a really interesting video, would be how you might set up a 2 channel bookshelf sized, 2-way speaker pair with a sub, covering placing, wiring and so on. Nothing super fancy, but maybe the sort of setup that someone just getting into it might get a lot from. BTW, thank you Steve for inspiring me to dig out my 30 year old hi fi separates out of the loft and get back in touch with my music collection, it’s been a wonderful trip down memory lane, just what you need to survive lock down.
Well, I’m struggling to find a way to sneak in a powered sub, under the wife radar. Can you recommend something that works well with movies, but hidden from pajama patrol?
I have a PSB sub but not a shirt anywhere close to this effort. Maybe one day we can have the 'best of Steve's shirts' review. For sure this one is in the top ten!
PSB kicks ass on so many levels. Steve definitely knows good sound. I've been a proud owner of a pair of PSB floorstanders for the last 20 years and they just kill in every genre of music or movies. Incredible quality and durability.
I am new to this channel and after watching a few vids I subscribed. Btw, I totally forgot about XTC's Making plans for Nigel, thanks for bringing the album to my attention.
Steve Guttenberg Audiophiliac And stereo subs can be a little smaller (since you have two of them) and usually smaller subs blend a little more easily with the main speakers (they are closer in size and faster)
@Miguel Barrio: If I remember correctly per Steve's video blog from your home, and barring your main speakers haven't changed in the meantime, I'd the say those Avantgarde's need subs that aren't too skimpy. The "smaller subs usually integrate better"-view I find not to hold much credence. If anything one may feel they blend in better because they're smaller and can wreak less havoc, so to speak, compared to bigger subs that can energize one's listening space more effectively, but it would be an unfortunate compromise to go small and miss out on the more visceral and natural presentation a pair of bigger subs could provide in tandem with your mains. It's all a matter of proper integration (not whether it's 'easier'), and this is surely possible with big subs. Just my $0.02..
+IMO A subwoofer is helpful for a small 2 CH system. Not so much for a quality 2 CH Tower system. A big benefit for a home theater system. A quality 10 inch subwoofer can provide a bigger punch than what most people suspect.
Steve, as for subwoofer placement, when you say place the sub right next to the listening position, are you saying the woofer faces the same direction as the listener?
Hi Steve, I have an Onkyo Integrated Amp, model 9070 using a Copland CDA23 CD Player and System Audio SA1230 speakers, I'm looking to upgrade my speakers and I'm curious as to what you'd Recommend in the price bracket of 1-2 Thousand Euros. Thanks very much, you put on a great show.
Steve...any links to blending a sub? Have you done a primer? Do you work out the x-over first and then adjust the volume? I used to have a pizza oven. Lost the house.
Unless you measure you're flying blind. I utilize both OmniMic and REW. REW (measurement software) is free, plus a $100 mic and you're golden. Pros = World class capability. Cons = Learning curve OmniMic from Dayton is $300, truly simple as can be. Seriously, upon opening the case, you're measuring in under 5 minutes. Pros = Wonderfully simple, highly capable Cons = Expense
I absolutely agree with you when it comes to describing a sub. I recently bought a psb sub series 200i which is pretty good. However musically I like my older Energy EXL s8. This sub imo blends in better. It has a more natural sound (more invisible than the psb). However it does suffer from port noise but only when cranked up. Steve how do the Rel subs compare to the PSBs? Is it worth the money?
Hi Steve, completely unrelated . . . are those ribbon speaker cables? Can you do a video about the different types of cables (ribbon, copper, silver plated, bi wire etc) and why a viewer might try them?
Only one of my preamplifiers (Audible Illusions Modulus 3) has dual preamp out connections for two sets of amplifiers. My older electronics (NAD 2600 amp, NAD 1300 preamp) have only one set of speaker binding posts and one preamp out for the amplifier. How would I connect the subwoofer to the NAD? Or am I limited to only using the Audible Illusions Modulus 3 to connect to subwoofer? Thanks Steve...
I was an anti-subwoofer snob for decades, in my 2-channel set up, I am not a home theater person. The subwoofer reputation was ruined by the home theater crowd. Those people invariably set up their subs and boom you to death. I upgraded from larger 8” woofer bookshelves (Boston Acoustics A70II)to more modern floor standers. (Elac Uni-Fi UF5) After about a year I was talked in to trying a sub by a reputable name in high end audio. Sold completely. Two years on now and what a fool I’ve been. Don’t be a snob and don’t kid yourself... your speakers are not “full range”. That 20-40hrtz you’ve been missing out on... once you find it... tune it in just so... game changer. Listen to steve.
Added a sub temporarily to see what it would be like at my desktop workstation. It sounds great with some songs and not so much with other songs. Is it too fiddly? Maybe. Is there enough bass now? Oh yeah. New issue is that everything on my desk vibrates...
I have a small little sub myself that also only exist in the color black, the KEF XQ60b, and I'm happy with my little "Blackie" that has no devilish ports on it. I don't like ports even though you're forced to have them sometimes, like I am on all my Elac speakers (FS507, CC501 and BS403) and on my KEF QX40 but then again, I only have the frustrating ports on 7 of my speakers in my 7.1 system so it's as bad as it could bee.
Can anyone suggest >600 Watts speaker(s) that can be used for all kinds of purposes and occasions like for desktop computers, home theater, like a PA system for addressing people, in community wedding halls for orchestras, outdoor public orchestras or gathering of 100s (or 1000s?) of people, karaoke parties, dance parties, conventional or modern TVs' output (to enhance the audio output as built-in won't be much like audiophile quality!), etc.?
@@moktaabdul6310 I will. I recently learn of a company that builds subs ONLY subs for 40 years at least. What 's the brand's name? REL. I said really? Then REL it is XD.
I have a question that doesn't pertain specifically to sub-woofers. I have read that all cables should all be the same length for all speakers. Others say that each cable should be as short as possible. (I have 5 speakers and a sub-woofer.)Which way is correct?
It's very important that the speaker cables be at least eight feet in length. They can be longer, but should never be shorter. I have no idea why; but all of my sources say this, going back decades. That is simply the minimum length for best sound when it comes to speaker cables. Interconnects, however should always be short. Preferably three feet or less. You also want minimalistic cables. No garden hoses. No multi-stranding. No fancy jackets. If you want to try a low cost DIY solution, get some 18/2 bell wire and use that. You'll likely be pleasantly surprized at how good it sounds. I've ordered the psb t-20 have you reviewed those?
Nicholas Payton is that deal. Great vid.
Always informative! How does it compare to the REL brand?
I have a RSL with Vanatoo speakers for my desktop. Best value sub imo.
@Don P
Bummer
@Don Pthx Don. Do those cables come with the sub and do you still have to balance it with the system?
Any chance they can blend well with magnepans?
I'd guess yes
Steve Guttenberg Audiophiliac thanks! I think a sub is in my future for the lrs. I love these speakers!
