After following her musical calling from her hometown in southern New Jersey to Los Angeles, 19-year-old singer-songwriter Nessa Barrett “went a whole year of growing my platform but never sharing my truth.” No more: Pretty Poison, her debut EP via Warner Records, sets the record straight. Growing into a charting, magnetic recording artist may look pretty, but the road to here has held plenty of potential pitfalls. Barrett is now sharing her healing process across seven evocative genre-defying songs that showcase her blossoming into who she always wanted to and was always meant to become.
Her pop-punk anthem “la di die” featuring legendary blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and his DTA Records signee jxdn, earned over 150 million streams and the No. 27 spot at Top 40 Radio, and grunge-heavy Pretty Poison lead single “i hope ur miserable until ur dead” entered Barrett into the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, solidifying Barrett as what she had long avoided: the center of attention. In the lead up to the Pretty Poison EP, this string of successful singles set the stage for her most honest work yet.
As impressively diverse as Pretty Poison’s sonic palette is, weaving darker and unconventional pop beats with reverby-heavy guitars and punctuating drums-and the accompanying music videos, created and co-directed by Barrett-Barrett’s distinctive voice rings above it all. And now that she has found her voice, she will use it to advocate for mental health and champion the messages dearest to her heart.
