  • Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto will take office later this year at a critical time when regional tensions over territorial disputes in the South China Sea are surging.
And this won't be just a foreign policy challenge for the new president. Chinese ships have crossed into Indonesia's exclusive economic zone near the Nantuna Islands at the bottom tip of Beijing's controversial ten-dash line.
Managing the escalating crisis in the South China Sea is going to be a "pivotal" challenge for Prabowo, according to Muhammad Zulfikar Rakhmat, director of the China-Indonesia desk at the Center of Economic and Law Studies. Zulfikar joins Eric from Jakarta to discuss how he thinks Prabowo is going to handle what's becoming a very volatile situation.

PT Vale Indonesia is the largest Nickel producer in Indonesia. Ownership:Vale Canada Limited-58.73%, Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd-20.09%. Surprised you just blindly accepted your guest's assertion that 90% of the nickel mined in Indonesia involved the Chinese. Did you not do any basic research before the interview?

@@teoengchin The figures you're referencing are on the mining side, not the processing side. Chinese companies do, in fact, control 90% of the nickel smelting sector in Indonesia: www.liputan6.com/bisnis/read/5374179/kementerian-esdm-90-persen-smelter-nikel-kerja-sama-dengan-china and katadata.co.id/amp/cek-data/63896f1798730/cek-data-benarkah-90-tambang-nikel-indonesia-dikuasai-cina.

Another shout-out to Eric for facilitating a interesting episode. The south China sea issues, regardless of its history like the 9 dots line was drawn to reflect the situation even before countries like Philippines became independent, may be resolved according to the codes of conduct. A Philippines scholar and diplomat recently indicated in a TV interview, the Philippines ship has stalled in the controversial shoals for over twenty two years without any confrontation, so what happened now?

How likely is it that China reaches out to Indonesia and strikes a deal on territorial claims with Indonesia? This clearly is the simplest bilateral issue to find a mutually agreeable solution. China could then build on that positive momentum to negotiate in good faith with Malaysia. The South China Sea region would be more peaceful for all.

There is the code of conduct in south China sea that is in discussion between Asean and China. From my understanding everyone is alright except Philippines.

The "Western" preoccuptation with USA-China-Taiwan is both a testament to the US political control over their mainstream media (but not TikTok) and the limited scope of information used by your associates in their decision making.
Your focus on SCS and Indon is welcomed.
