    Thank you so much for creating this video - it's very informative! I am trying to learn more about tax legalities about e-commerce.
    My questions are:
    How do you know which states are not tax shipping?
    How do you know which products are taxable?
    Also, as a future Shopify/Online seller,
    How do I pay taxes? How do I register with the IRS?
    How often do I have to pay taxes, quarterly/yearly?
    Besides keeping track of income earned and expenses, anything else I should be keeping track of?
    What are tax deductibles and tax breaks?
    Is there a YT video on how to file taxes in the US for sellers in the e-commerce world you would recommend?
    Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CREATING THIS TYPE OF CONTENT FOR US NEWBIES.

      Don't let that stop you!! We have so many ways to help and guide you through this process. It doesn't need to scare you anymore.
      When you're just starting out, the only state you need to worry about registering in is your home state. When you make sales there, you'll need to charge sales tax and remit it to the state. You don't need to worry about charging sales tax in other states until you start approaching the economic thresholds. For a complete and updated list of those thresholds, along with valuable information about doing your sales tax properly, download our PDF "10 Steps to Ensure Sales Tax Doesn't Burn Down Your eCommerce Business." You can find it here - ledgergurus.com/resources/downloads-2/10-steps-to-ensure-sales-tax-doesnt-burn-down-your-ecommerce-business/
      As you get further along in your business, sales tax will get more complicated, but you don't need to be afraid of it. We have several levels of help for ecommerce businesses - DIY (How to Do-It-Yourself -> an email crash course with links to articles and videos like this one), DIWY (Do-It-WITH-You -> a sales tax course where we teach you exactly what you need to do and give you access to experts who can answer all your questions), and DIFY (Do-It-FOR-You -> for when you are ready to outsource). Great video! Very helpful! I have a question though, if I am based in the state of NY and ship to every other state but my drop shipping store doesn’t make more than $1M a year or 200 transactions in one state then I don’t need to collect taxes in that state, correct? And then, in step 1 of this video I would just have to enter the state of NY because that’s where I am based and where I should collect taxes for now, I wouldn’t need to add all the other states, did I understand that right?

    • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  3 роки тому +1

      The thresholds are different for every state. And none of them are $1M. Most are closer to $100,000. We have a list of all the states' thresholds in the appendix of our "10 Steps to Ensure Sales Tax Doesn't Burn Down Your eCommerce Business" PDF. You can get that here - ledgergurus.com/resources/downloads-2/10-steps-to-ensure-sales-tax-doesnt-burn-down-your-ecommerce-business/
      Also, you definitely need to pay sales tax in your home state / state your business is registered in, but then you only need to pay taxes in other states when you meet the thresholds. Be aware that Florida, Missouri, and Kansas can be tricky.
      We're getting ready to launch a course to teach business owners everything they need to know about sales tax. To learn more, go to: ledgergurus.com/resources/sales-tax-course-updates/

    Hi! I loved your great explanation of these functions in Shopify. I loved it. I have one question. I hope you can help. We use Shopify to sell beekeeping equipment all over the US. Many of our customers have an agricultural tax exemption so they do not pay sales tax. That is easy to do because we can uncheck the charge sales tax box in that customers profile. However some of our products do not qualify for that exemption. Do you know how I can exempt a customer from sales tax BUT also exempt a product from that sales tax exemption? Thank you for any ideas!!!

Once you reach $100K in annual sales or 200 transactions in a state, you would want to check their economic nexus laws. If you meet that state's threshold, then you are liable for sales to for customers in that state.

    • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  3 роки тому +1

      You still need to determine where you have nexus due to physical presence (where your business is based) and economic nexus and then still setup sales tax settings Shopify. Because vendor apps like Printful are not marketplace facilitators, they have no responsibility to collect and remit the sales tax.
      As far as remitting, each state have a portal where you can e-file and pay sales tax. So you just create an online account with each of the states you collect sales tax in and file and remit online. There are also apps that can help with this. Hi Mia, since you don't have physical presence or economic nexus in other states, you don't need to register, collect, and remit/file for sales tax. The most common ways that will create nexus states outside your home state is if you store inventory anywhere else, hire employees in other states, or if you start to meet economic nexus thresholds in other states ($100K in annual revenue or 200 in annual transactions are the lowest thresholds). You can view this video for more on sales tax nexus: ua-cam.com/video/_WHEq2T530I/v-deo.html

    • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  3 роки тому

      NO! Do NOT set up taxes in every state. It is illegal to collect taxes in a state if you haven't registered there yet. That is a can of worms you DO NOT want to open. You don't need to worry about sales tax in a state unless you have nexus there, either. That can be physical nexus, because you have a physical presence there (inventory, employees, etc.) or economic nexus because you have passed the economic or sales volume threshold in that state. Question! 1. Does Shopify have a system that notifies you when you’ve reached nexus in a state to start applying taxes?
    2. Before applying taxes for nexus, should I apply for a sales tax permit from that state first?
    3. Once I reach nexus (ex: 100,000$ or 200 transactions) and start applying tax for a nexus state, do I report the taxes quarterly or annually?
    4. Since I didn’t start collecting nexus tax until I reached the 100,000$ or 200 transaction mark, how do I know how much tax to pay on the previous 100,000 or 200 transactions? And which quarter should I report it in?
    5. Does Shopify have a tax report for summary for each state or states you’ve reached nexus?
    Please let me know. These answers would be very helpful.

    • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  3 роки тому

      1. No. You can watch our other video on how to download and understand your Shopify sales tax report to determine nexus: ua-cam.com/video/RWZHnD0AEwo/v-deo.html
      2. Yes. Legally you need a sales tax permit before collecting sales tax.
      3. This depends on the state and how much sales tax you are collected. Generally, the more sales tax you collect, the more often you are required to file.
      4. The date in which you meet the threshold for the past 12 months is when you are legally required to start collecting. If you didn't collect or remit for a period of time, you can always file and remit back taxes.

    • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  3 роки тому

      You are required to remit sales tax for sales in states where you have sales tax "nexus". Most likely this is in any states where you have a physical presence (owners or employees live, business registered, inventory held, etc.) or a high amount of economic activity. State's thresholds for economic activity differs, but if you have $100K in annual sales or 200 in annual transactions in any state, you will want to check their economic nexus thresholds. Any states you have nexus in, you'll need to register for a sales tax permit, then collect sales tax from customers and remit sales tax to the state. As an overarching answer before I get into specifics, I highly encourage you to download our PDF "10 Steps to Ensure Sales Tax Doesn't Burn Down Your eCommerce Business" - ledgergurus.com/resources/downloads-2/10-steps-to-ensure-sales-tax-doesnt-burn-down-your-ecommerce-business/. It should help answer most of your questions about sales tax. That said, let's dive into your questions.
      Where you pay sales tax is based in large part on nexus, both physical and economic. It's unlikely that you'll need to pay yet on economic nexus since your sales are still quite low. That said, if you cross those thresholds, you will have charge sales tax, even on your handmade items.
      Etsy is a marketplace facilitator, which is why they are charging sales tax. You do need to watch your sales across all your sales channels, but you're still too small for most economic thresholds yet (watch out for Kansas sales, though. You DO need to charge sales tax on all sales in Kansas.)
      Are you dropshipping from the fulfillment center, or do you own the inventory? If you're dropshipping, you don't need to worry about sales tax yet. If you own the inventory, you do need to charge sales tax in any state your inventory is in because that is considered physical nexus.

My question is if let’s say we reach 200 transactions in 2 different states, do we need to register and remit sales taxes on those states separately? Does this mean that everytime we will be reaching 200 transactions in every state, we will be needing to register on that state again where we met the eco nexus? Also, is there a way to get information on the different tax rate percentage each state collect? Thank you and looking forward to your response.

      @LedgerGurus  3 роки тому

      Each state has its own economic nexus threshold (though several are similar). You have to register and remit sales tax separately for each state. You'd only register in each state once and you pay sales tax there after you've hit the threshold. We go into a lot more detail on this in our "10 Steps to Ensure Sales Tax Doesn't Burn Down Your eCommerce Business" download - ledgergurus.com/resources/downloads-2/10-steps-to-ensure-sales-tax-doesnt-burn-down-your-ecommerce-business/. Because you are based in Wyoming, you have nexus there already. You do need to register in that state so you can collect and remit sales tax there. You'll need to watch your numbers for other states to see when you pass economic threshold and need to register in each state. You can download our "10 Steps to Ensure Sales Tax Doesn't Burn Down Your eCommerce Business" for more information on that here - ledgergurus.com/resources/downloads-2/10-steps-to-ensure-sales-tax-doesnt-burn-down-your-ecommerce-business/.

      For sales tax, you only need to register and collect in states where you have a high volume of sales or transactions. Once you reach $100K in annual sales or 200 transactions in one state, we suggest checking their economic nexus laws to see if you need to register, collect, and remit

    Hello! I am dropshipping, and I am located in Illinois while my supplier is in China. To collect tax, do I need to register a sales tax id with every single state even though I am only in Illinois? I am just confused on who I am able to charge sales tax on or if I even need to.

    • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  3 роки тому +1

      You only need to register for a sales tax id and collect sales tax from customers in states where you have nexus. Since you are located in Illinois, you have "physical nexus" there. Then you will need to worry about checking economic nexus thresholds in other states as you approach $100K in annual sales or 200 transactions in any other states. Best of luck! • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  3 роки тому

      Hi Lena, you likely only need to worry about sales tax in states where you have a lot of economic activity. Once you reach $100K in annual sales or 200 annual transactions in a state, you'll want to check that state's "economic nexus" threshold. If you are over their threshold, then you are liable for sales tax. You should then register for a sales tax permit, collect from customers in that state, and file/remit that sales tax to the state. HI there. I live in Nevada and use Printify with my Shopify store. For all of the sales I have, Printify adds that customer’s tax to my costs so it seems that they’re taking care of it for me. But I’m not sure how to set up Shopify sales tax so that my customers have that sales tax added to their purchase. I have my sales tax collection started in Nevada. How do I start collecting taxes in all other states?

    • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  2 роки тому

      Printify is charging you sales tax because they have nexus in those states. You should only charge sales tax where your have nexus - physical presence (NV) and any other states you pass economic nexus. Before you reach that you can not legally collect sales tax. You can give resale certificate to printify so they stop charging you sales tax though.

    Do you need to add each state? If so, I’m only able to add “United States”. I’ve sold items and my reports don’t show what the tax should be. I’m so confused about this. Do I need to calculate myself?

    • @LedgerGurus

      You need to add each state where you have nexus. For more on nexus (where you have a liability to register, collect, and file/remit sales tax), you can watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/_WHEq2T530I/v-deo.html
      And just as a reminder, you'll need to register with the states before you add the states. It's illegal to collect sales tax from customers without have a sales tax permit in a state.
