I'm sick and tired of self professed pros saying we are doing nearly everything wrong. BS!!! I'm 60 and been fishing 55+ years and, using basic equipment (not what "pros" say I should use), have landed thousands of fish, including double digits. I just got home from fishing where I caught 25+ fish fishing MY WAY. not yours or anyone else's. I'm discusted at these kind of videos, some of them coming from teenagers for crying out loud. Tips are fine. Just quit saying we are wrong because we are not you.
Stop with the nonsense percentages. This video should be titled "How to set the Hook" not some stupid percentage pulled from your backside.

The Art of Hook Setting must first come from bluegills, then trout, then carp, then bass....likely in that order. Bassers are unskilled in the art.
I've always felt like a lighter Hookset has done me well . If your hooks are good hooks , and you keep them sharp. It don't take alot to penetrate past the barb. I tend to throw the rod to my side and more or less just lean into it. Not real doing a normal Hookset . Just putting pressure on a tight line. Ive been fairly lucky not to lose to many fish . I just know if a hook is sharp it's gonna do its job . I think it looks funny damn near throwing your back out on a Hookset . Like damn you fishing for sharks .
Really depends on the bait.
It takes a pretty good bit of force to stick a 10+ lb bass with a worm hook.
@@choccolocco you got a good point, my pb is only 6 and I did set the hook pretty hard . The roof of the mouth definitely takes alot more then getting the cheeks or lips. However I see dudes jacking hooksets like the hulk and It's like a pound or 2 lol trying to send em to the moon!

Lol, agreed, When I was younger, I snatched a few dinks out of the water and over the boat. I’ve also had a couple of better fish get to the boat and only the very tip of the hook was barely poked in the side jaw. Lost some, was able to grab others. If your rod crackles when yo set the hook, it might be too much, lol
I agree with this completely. But there’s one exception to this. Heavy current. Current can wreak havoc on hook setting in a few ways. Most often it’s a bow in the line that requires you to move way more line to get good pressure on the fish. Today’s super fast reels help some, as do longer rods. It can be absolutely brutal with certain top water lures. Unless the fish is already downstream of me, heavy current is the one time I will reel down until the line is tight and still jack them. The goal is to move enough line to cut through the water and pull out any bow. I cut my teeth fishing tailraces on the Tennessee river. It’s a very different situation from most lakes and typical reservoirs.
I only really set the hook like the fish owes me money because I want everyone I’m fishing with to know I’m catching them and they are not.

How about when you’re flippin/pitching into heavy cover? You still don’t “Jack” the hook set? What about topwater frog fishing?
Are there times when you need to Jack them? Like frog fishing? You have to hammer those one right? I also use a medium heavy for froggin.
Flounder are very good at holding a bait until they see the boat and they spit it. They're not hooked, they're just hanging on. Sounds like bass do it too.
It seems that a pole that’s got some flexibility, and a line that stretches, would be better at maintaining tension in the line, too. (And softening the hook set.)
Hi Rick! Something I do if possible is open the hook gap slightly. If you look at the jig from the side most often the point is inline with the eye. Grabbing it with plyers behind the barb and twisting up wards slightly you open up the gap. An 1/8th inch is more than enough. If the hook is too thick or hardened you probably won't cause much effect though. When I buy a jig I first look at the wire diameter, myself I don't go for super hooks. Give it a try.

Great video. Ever since I heard you a few years ago advise against trying to turn the fish unless absolutely necessary I’ve landed far more of those type fish. It’s also incredible how many pro anglers I see on MLF lose fish while continually flipping their rod tip back & forth. I wonder if they are trying to avoid having to deal with cameramen & judges at the back of the boat. Anyway, enjoyed the video as always. C’MON 100K !!!

I agree with you Randy 100%. With the advancement of rods and line you don't need to drop the rod tip and jack'em like we use to with mono.

Watched a Hank Parker episode 30+ years ago on slack-line hook setting. Gerald Swindle has 1 too- I hardly ever lose fish cuz that pop buries the hook deep. Like your channel- we don't hafta agree on everything I guess : )

Randy, i lost several good fish in a couple tournaments on a frog, that ended up costing me a check. Waited until i felt the fish before setting the hook. Any suggestions for sticking more with frogs?
Most pro anglers I see do exactly what you are saying in wrong ? I think there is more to it than just the amount of force you use on the hook set- Rod size weight action- spinning set up versus casting setup. I personally use a medium or medium heavy rod and when I feel that tug, a pop it to him. The only time I don't use a heavy hookset is with crankbaits or other baits with treble hooks. I am not saying you are 100% wrong, I just think there is more to it than just the technique used to set the hook.
I've fished with jigs for 30 years and I disagree with this based on experience and logic. The words used here to describe the hook set are mis-leading. It's all about how hard you set the hook and many anglers simply set the hook too hard. It's all about applying the right amount of pressure and this depends on the rod power and action and line. The main reason anglers lose fish with jigs is the weedguard! The head of the jig hits the fish's mouth/lip 1st then the weedguard then the hook. If the weed guard is too stiff or long it impedes the hook-point from penetrating! Nobody knows precisely where inside the fish's mouth the jig is (or what angle it is, etc.) right before you set the hook so the only way to improve your chances of hook penetration is to weaken the weedguard which is determined by the thickness and type of cover/structure you're fishing. My hook-up/landing percentage has increased to 97.8% this way. There's your clickbait title.

You can thank the googan squad for popularizing the hookset from hell. I have no idea why it’s so popular for all these high school anglers to hookset like they’re hooking into a saltwater fish in 200’ of water for a 2lb bass in 2.5’ of water.

I think taking that bit of time to reel down, a slight pause, the bass will often feel the lead and drop the jig in that fleeting moment.
They will spit anything that feels “fake”.
I have a question off topic for ya Randy or anyone else for that matter. I have a few honey holes on my lake that most always hold fish. But when figuring out what they want or how they want it does it spook them by running say a crankbait,Spinnerbait, swimbait thru the area and then trying to go directly in the same spot with a jig or creature bait or shaky head? I know staying back far away and casting as far off as you can is the way to go when using a moving bait, so the trolling motor or boat is a non issue. Just wondering if I try a moving bait first, because I can stay off the spot, would the action or slight disturbance of the bait itself running thru ruin the spot for a time before I can follow up or try a more finesse approach? Man I know that was long winded and I’m sorry about that but I couldn’t explain it any better with a shorter description. Love to hear from Randy the man himself but anybody’s advice or opinion would be greatly appreciated.

But I was thinking about picking off some that were either hanging out further away from a piece of structure or on the way in or out without ruining the heart of the honey hole. I think most of the time if a bass is holding tight that a finesse tactic can get them to bite anyway since you’re throwing it close to them. I really appreciate you answering my question anyway. It’s nice to see someone take the time to read that long post!!

Although I agree, I have to say it's to each his own to a degree. Because for pitchin reeds and heavy cover at my local lake I use a heavy fast action rod and 50 lb braid. Pitchin a 3/4 oz jig w/ large craw trailer. I use almost a combination of what your saying because I do lay the hammer back on em and I honestly have had no issue. Absolutely excellent hook up ration. Also the jig I use is a gamechanger trashmaster. Utilizes an ewg shape heavy gauge hook rather than an old school brush guard on a typical jig maybe that's part of it 🤷
No need especially with heavy braid. It’s not that you won’t land fish, it’s just that it’s largely unnecessary. Maybe with line with some stretch, but braid has like zero give to it, so I feel like it would pop out more often than not.

Randy just think bout it, if your hooks are sharp, yotomoto (ain't funny how everybody knows how spell his name lol) got this in his 🧠, you don't have to jack fish like that, plus your making a like a Grove into a basses jaw where your hook went in, so in fight to boat, if any slack comes in your line..... see ya. Your right , and both Gary's are right, hooks we have these days u just don't have do that.

I've heard it's also a good idea to NOT set the hook when using Mega Bass jerkbaits. That you're supposed to start reeling/fighting the fish once you get a hit.
I've always had a light hookset from fly fishing for trout. If you set a hook hard on a fly rod, you're just gonna snap your leader.
Not to mention, I'm so sick of catching bass with jacked up mouths because of idiots who set the hook as hard as they possibly can.

Heres Everything I've learned about catching fish and hookups in the past few years as i started fishing tourneys:
I started catching more fish when I started experimenting with rods and hooks and started using a lot of phenix rods and daiwa rods. Phenix rods are typically a lil bit lighter than the actions say they are and almost every rod they make, even ones with a fast snappy tip have a deep parabolic bend to them. not so soft like a cranking rod, they still have backbone. But what happened is that instead of jacking the hook hard, I started doing kayak tourneys where sometimes I'm setting the hook sitting down, at weird angles, etc. So now I use the gamakatsu gfinesse hooks for everything single hooked, mostly the hybrid worm ones, and I use the duo nano trebles for treble hook baits. These hooks are much thinner than most and teflon coated, and pretty expensive, but well worth it if you are tourney fishing. The berkley fusion hooks are a close second. When I set the hook now, I reel up the slack and do a long sweeping motion even on t-rigs, jigs, etc. I started using stuff with thin hooks--looking for jigs and stuff with thinner hooks or making my own jigs. I started using lighter line, and never lock my drag down, always set it where the fish can pull drag if its a big fish and if it pulls hard enough, etc. And now I seldom lose fish. Only time I do is if it was a swipe and I only have them skin hooked or something. I only use braid on frog rod and that's probably the only technique where I still really set the hook kinda hard, and that's only because you have to because it's near impossible to find a frog with thin hooks, theres a couple but not many. For my flipping rod I use a med/hvy instead of a heavy now, and I only use 20lb fluoro if Im in thick ass cover, I'f im just flipping lay downs and bushes and stuff I use 16 or 17lb line. For most stuff I use 14 or 15 and for cranking I use 12. I used to use 20lb for everything except for cranking. I find now I get more bites on the thinner line (not cuz fish don't see it as much, but because there is a drastic change in action with thinner line. Throw a chatterbait on 20lb, then throw the same chatterbait on 14lb and you'll see exactly what I mean.)
My cranking rods, I use the daiwa rebellion cranking rod 7 ft med and 7'3 m/mh glass/carbon hybrid rods. They are very light and very parabolic. I use med for almost everything except big deeper cranks. I use 12lb line for both and I always change out the thick ewg type trebles to thin duo nano trebles or to thin gama gfinesse trebles. Thick ewg hooks on cranking suck because they miss lots of fish cuz the points are tipped in. If the fish doesnt really EAT the bait and swipe, an ewg will always miss the fish. The duo hooks are kinda shaped like ewgs, but the points of the hook tip back outward so they hook into fish that don't completely engulf the bait.

I fish a lot more TR than jigs. The reel down and lean into the set if more effective for me. Plus a lot less hooks flying towards your head. Also bend the barb down most of the time for much easier penetration. Keep a bend in the rod, pressure reeling and works for me. Good video sir.
