I still plan on getting it, and I'm very relieved to hear you're designing a quick-release for it!

I have been using the old F1 wheel with no mods for like 3 years. I like it, though I would really like to upgrade to a more premium feel wheel, however I really don't want to give up rotaries as well as the rocky shifter. That means this is really the only relatively affordable wheel I might end up with when it comes out properly and the dash will work with all sims. There are obviously higher quality after market wheels one can buy but they are very very VERY expensive compared to this one. As much as I am a fan of Ferrari sometimes I wish TM released a wheel with lots of buttons and neutral branding.

I have this steering wheel. Im in the process of getting another replacement one because buttons have fallen off. They have a twist lock cover which doesnt seem to stay locked very well. Plastic is a few microns too thin where it should be thicker to lock securely i think. Amazing to use but im constantly Worrying a button will fall off mid race again..

Seems a fair and balanced review for its time. For anyone unsure one year on I can say that the screen compatibility has improved and works seamlessly with Assetto Corsa Competizione. Enjoying the experience using this wheel and I am interested to check out the quick release options that were mentioned in the review.

Only if you're on PC. Maybe Playstation. On Xbox, the screen only works on Formula 1 games, and in that instance, the in-game mfd screens don't show up at all. This is even AFTER Thrustmaster claimed full compatibility for Horizon 5. I contacted them, and they confirmed that only F1 works on Xbox but claimed there were new updates coming. When I asked what and when they told me there's no info. Seeing that there's only ever been 1 update ever for this wheel, I'm guessing there won't be another one, ever. I feel like all of this was misrepresented in their product descriptions and I feel like I got got. I'm very reluctantly quiting their ecosystem entirely, and going to have to buy an entire new setup, because I cannot support a company that just settles for, "eh... that's good enough." I will never buy another Thrustmaster product ever again, just based on this purchase. I'm just thankful I bought directly from them so got it as cheap as possible.

I understand that grip is difficult with sweaty hands but when racing you use gloves. The sharp edges on the screen are indeed not good, but those are places you never touch. because you just break the screen. Gloves are the solution to that problem. That it only works with F1 is normal because it is a Formula 1 wheel but I understand your frustration. The thing is that it is such a new technology that, for example, a gran tourismo that is quite old cannot handle this new software. The telemetry has been sent to the screen with a signal and that is difficult because it has to be correct at 0.001 of a second. By the way, if you only see the Thrustmaster and Ferrari logo, it is because the settings are not correct or you are in home menu / not in game.

    • @petermakesthings7342
      @petermakesthings7342  3 роки тому +1

agree, using gloves solves all the rough edge problems, but I wanted to highlight it because it's silly they couldn't file a few edges on their most expensive wheel, I also get your point re telemetry on consoles, this is probably the main reason they limited the support, but PC has loads of games in which you can drive F1 cars and provide full telemetry

    • @Jay1787

You shouldn't have to wear gloves. I cannot for the life of me get my head around people feeling like they need to wear gloves and shoes.... it's a video games, you're not gonna set on fire.

@@Jay1787 The gloves do give more grip. I don't wear a shoe myself, but I can see why you would.
Pedals can be sharp and if your foot/toes get in them it can be painful. therefore shoes as protection.
your BASE can indeed catch fire if it gets too hot (it happens exceptionally and if you block the cooling system with your hands or sticker.)

I don't mind the rim. Comparing it to my Formula V2, it's actually very comparable in terms of quality, with a screen as well, and now deals are popping up I got it with a pretty significant price saving. For the price I bought it at, it's a no brainer for me.
Though I'm passing on the T-Chrono add on, for some reason it's priced at 1/3rd the price of the total rim itself where I am, no way I'm touching that. Bizzare.

    hi Peter,
big fan of your tm quick release, makes hopping into the sim and switching between cars really enjoyable :).
The price point is justified imo, I think you look at it with your engineer and diy mindset, and just see the raw material cost, without the sums TM has to pay in licencing etc.
Building wheels your style will always result in a "better" product than buying something off the shelves at a relatively close price point.
I personally was really hyped when I first saw the wheel, but since I only play iRacing/AC/rFactor this wheel is a big nono, especially if they just add dual clutches just "for the aesthetics" without real use. The amount of encoders just for the screen, and rotery encoders that act as +/- while looking like they would have 12 different positions is just icing on the cake.
This wheel looks perfectly fitting for the average f1 game enjoyer though, all fancy look and very little "sim" substance 😈.
Currently planning an upgrade to a DD base, wanted to wait if thrustmaster has something on the horizon. But seeing that they still use that shitty plastic screw on "quick" release I don't think they have any plans to cash in on the enthusiast market, and are happy staying entry level.
    Thanks for the review

Surely it's the game devs that have to support the screen. With any luck there will be an API that can be used with third party solutions like SimHub. The grips are a bit disappointing but I did look at Sainz real wheel and that doesn't look much different.
I'm still thinking of getting one, like the review. It's really good to have an honest opinion. Some might consider some of your criticism nitpicking, but that's a good thing, no surprises :) Those clutch levers being sharp is real bad, definitely needs some 600 grit wet and dry paper I think.

I agree to 95% of your statements. It's one of the best TM wheels available, but it's absolutly useless (to this time) if you don't play F1 2020. Raceroom is working on an API to get their telemetry data to the wheel, so RRRE will support that wheel in the future. But that brings the next problem. You have only a limited number of skins for the display. TM needs to add some kind of editor to upload custom skins to the wheel, that would also be a great project for the community.
The buttons and rotary encoder are nice, but the paddle shifter is from a Caterpillar or something like that. Heavy and way to loud. I've purchased the T-Chrono, and that are the paddles to go with. 1000% better. TM should think about to sell this wheel in 2 different packages. The "standart" wheel with the magnetic paddles, and a version with the T-Chrono's for 50 bucks more. It's totally stupid to sell them seperate.
I disagree about the price. 349€ is absolutly ok for that wheel. Go and compare with other "mass market" manufacturers. O yes, Logitech and Fanatec do not even have a wheel with a display. It has a CF frontplate, nice tactile buttons and switches, a display and working Led's. For me, 350€ is ok.
You can buy this wheel, if you:
    - are a Thrustmaster fanboy (as myself)
    - play F1 2020 on PC or PS4/5 and use NATIVE mode for the display. Otherwise (UDP mode for XBOX) you will have to setup a wlan connection and you will have a lag between the game and the display. I've purchased mine from an XBOX user. He had to use WLAN to get the display working in F2020 and had a 7 second (!!!) lag from the game to the display.
In fact i would agree not to buy this wheel by now. Price will drop in the future, and more games will support this wheel. Wait.
A sidenote...Normaly i only play Raceroom and have nothing to do with modern F1. So i had to purchase F1 2020 too and really wanted to get serious about the game. This went well for 10 minutes, then I noticed that there is no option to turn off the virtual steering wheel, so you always see two steering wheels in front of you. Does'nt work at all...

      @petermakesthings7342  3 роки тому

thank you, loads of very valid points, and I strongly believe that over time we will get support for most of the games, they will add bite point on clutch, templates editor etc, but they could have waited a bit and sell a more refined product (or they couldn't because they knew fana will introduce budget DD...) , as for the price - guess it depends on the person, I'm just used to making my own wheels that have screen, leds etc but cost much less :)

This wheel reminds me of the saying, "Jack of all trades, master of none."
It's like they tried to cram so many features into this wheel and keep it affordable that they didn't really make any feature amazing. Instead, they just have a whole bunch of just average features that makes the wheel kind of average overall.
Most people won't be looking down at the wheel screen while racing anyway. If they do, it won't be that often during the race. I'd rather take the money spent on the screen and put it into better carbon fiber, better button feel/paddle shifters, and/or better hand grips.
I like that Thrustmaster is trying to compete with Fanatec and I know they are kind of new to premium open wheel rims, but I expected more from this wheel. Reception from reviewers have been lukewarm at best and those who did receive these wheels have continued to keep using their Fanatec setups.
If you have a Fanatec and Thrustmaster rig and are considering this with the optional paddles or the Formula V2 with APM's, I'd save up the extra few dollars and buy the Formula V2. Otherwise, it's a decent wheel but the Formula V2 blows this out of the water. Still better than anything else Thrustmaster is offering in this category though.

I think that most of the things you’ve mentioned are not that important. For 350$ there are no better options in the market right now. Having leds and screen is a big advantage for f1 sim racers, clutch pedals used for race starts and pit releases. There are more than enough buttons for F1 race and you can map them all. Buttons for screen are also important, when during the race you wanna get information about your car. And about the quality, TM were never high end company and therefore the price is only 350$, so there are compromises. Other add ons cost 1000$ dollars and more.

thanks for the comment, I guess it all comes to what one considers expensive, or maybe I just had too high expectations from all the hype generated :) you have to agree though that chamfering edges doesn't result in significant manufacturing costs increase so it's hard for me to accept that

@@petermakesthings7342 It’s not a cheap price, that’s for sure. But again, you can’t get any other product with all those features for less than 1000 dollars. About the edges, I totally agree but it’s not much of an issue for me as I’m using gloves anyway, even on my current T300 stock rim. It could be better, but if you really want to enjoy this rim and features you should be passionate about F1 2020. Anyway, great video and thanks for the review, I watched it until the end 🤙

Good review but you do realise it's a replica of the real world Ferrari F1 wheel, so they say it's based on the current Ferrari F1 Wheel so the real Ferrari F1 wheel must be a bit iffy then!

Hope you did not think I was having a go at your review I enjoy your vids very much and this one was very truthful I agree with you the price is way to high for something that only screws on to the base unit. I have a thrustmaster t300rs gt with original wheel (gt) and the F1 rim, unfortunately I am disabled and could not do the work necessary as shown in your video to add the quick release and seeing as I'm not moving that fast anyway it doesn't matter. Good review. But you are just fishing for stuff that makes no sense.
1 The grip. All wheel bases are meant to be used with gloves not bare handed. So what it feels like to the bare hand is irrelevant. Your DIY tennis racket grips made me laugh thats not very good.
2 Yes the wheel is only compatible with F1 2019 and F1 2020. Its what it was meant for. But upgrades for comptability is coming in the future.
    3 Paddles can be upgraded.
4 This wheel vs its counter 1:1 replica that goes for over $7,000 that works for nothing by the way. Other then a display behind glass. Or the old and none functional replica wheel its spot on and economical.
5 My personal opinion is that Fanatec has better quality. But with this wheel you have equal compatablility for PS5, Xbox and PC for half of the price. Great price of an entry point novice sim racer.
6 Display screen as you said it not touch screen so its not meant to be touched. Its not very sharp at all in the first place.

The shifters are good, buttons are good, has genuine carbon fiber frontplate, good ammount of switches/buttons/rotary encoders and all that. Plus the fact that it's licensed by ferrari. What other brand on the market offers this for less money?

This wheel is to replicate a real f1 wheel that reals f1 drivers use. These drivers wear gloves racing so thats the reason why its not comfortable to a bare hand. Same thing goes with the sharp paddles, but i see how it can annoy someone who isnt used to wearing gloves while racing
