I’ve watched this documentary numerous times , but since Crosby passed away, it is even more poignant than when he was alive. What an absolute treasure of a film. You can have the arrogant, not as talented Stills, Nash, and the fourth. I’ll remember Crosby and his music forever

@@severalseasons there's more of that goodness on the mulitrack masters. PERRO TAPEs. But no money to research, mix and put it out. But the 30 reels of 2 inch were not lost. Still exist.

@Stephen Barncard - What kind of shape are the tapes in? As you undoubtedly know, magnetic tape isn’t exactly an ideal long-term storage medium. I’ve recently worked with some tapes from the 1960s that were stored properly; yet, print-through was a real problem.
Anyhow, I hope the tracks have been digitized for preservation. If not, that should be done pronto. I’d offer to do it myself; alas, I don’t have a 2” machine in my studio...but maybe I could rent one.
If the tracks have already been digitized, and you want to work in digital, I’d be delighted...no, wait - *honored* to invest my time and my studio to get the research and mix project rolling.
Are you in the L.A. area?

Funny, because I am big CSN and CSN&Y fan, and I bought the record thinking it would be as amazing as you and others say it is. I didn't think it was great at all. The songs - the chords, lyrics and melodies, are simple, static and boring. It's like Crosby was sitting around a campfire stoned with friends, just making stuff up on the spot, with no real thought or effort in the songwriting itself. Sorry I can't add to the thumbs up crowd here...

Asked myself why I am still alive after losing my 1st born son and best friend everyday since he passed.
    It’s was an automobile accident.
    Sudden.
Devastation hit as my whole life was a big ?.
I was 17 when he was born and at 32 he was gone taking half my heart and soul with him wherever he is I am and I feel him with me.
I struggle 4 near 20 yrs now to stay alive and here 4 the rest of my kids and theirs but it’s hard~a 4ever till we meet again thing.
Not sure if you David will ever see this or why I am compelled to share this but my heart goes out to you with love and thanks 4 all the beautiful music. My son loved the vinyl we played CSNY regularly ‘our house’ one of his fav songs.

I was lucky enough to see David in concert in Clearwater Florida at the Capitol Theatre last week. It’s an intimate venue and I was thinking how fortunate I was to be in the same room with him and his excellent band. There was much love for him and the music from the audience, and also much love and appreciation from him and the band for being there and sharing all the great music. His voice was amazing. I would not have missed it. Who among us has not made mistakes in life. I think both the audience and David were grateful for the shared experience. A complex man whose contributions to music are immeasurable. Life is short. I think it’s about forgiveness.

Don't know if you consciously 'lifted' a lyric from Don Henley, but the sentiment in that song really gives weight to your comment. And that is really *The Heart Of The Matter* right now for planet Earth....
...There are people in your life who've come and gone
They let you down, you know they hurt your pride
You better put it all behind you, baby, 'cause life goes on
You keep carrying that anger, it'll eat you up inside, baby
I've been trying to get down to the Heart of the Matter
      But my will gets weak
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think it's about forgiveness
      Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me
I've been trying to get down to the Heart of the Matter
Because the flesh will get weak
      And the ashes will scatter
      So I'm thinking about forgiveness
      Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me

IMO he is one of the very, very few artists who is getting better. That recent album by him, the blue one is excellent. Many, many of the top rock gods have long ago passed their best days. I met him at a restaurant in Bham when they played there. I was 47 then and most of my coworkers were in their 20's, so to say the least, i was only one that recognized him. I went up to him and asked" excuse me sir, but are you David Crosby". He replied with an awesome retort, " i am , but i am not tonight". I told him i loved his music and told him to have a nice night. Knowing he didnt want fanfare, i didnt ask for autograph. He was there with either his son or grandson ( an older teen or early 20 young man). He was very cordial and nice. Good down to earth dude. I knew it was him as they were playing arena next day. At one point in the show, they stopped playing, Crosby looked over at Nash and Stills and said " They don't need us, they're having their own concert..." the entire arena was rockin that night ! Having been a fan of David Crosby & his honey voice, since his time with the Byrds & even up to present times, I look forward to seeing this well deserved reminder, not to forget the man & his considerate talents. Any of us who have grown up during the 60s & 70s, know how easy it is to 'lose one's way & moral compass', how much more so, those who were thrust into the spot light, delights & attributes of extreme fame & fan worship'. We all have made & often still continue to make mistakes. Let's remember the wonderful music that David has 'shared with us' & also the character he lent to that classic 60s movie, Easy Rider (the part played by Dennis Hopper). And remember, Music is Love'..... (from his brilliant first solo album 'If I Could Only Remember my Name')... Thanks for the joy you have brought into my life via your stunning music, David !

    I knew a dude who'd built a wooden boat, 33ft, Lytham-St-Annes. UK.
So eventually we did some sailing and I took the perfect facsimile photograph. Escape.
I'd lost my Mother, 10yrs earlier as a tiny boy, so my life was spiralling too.
    I came to admire Crosby's CSN's harmonic style a great deal. I think it's a landmark.

Downloaded this and watched today, also same with Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice. Both excellent documentaries from a similar era of great music. Enjoyed them and remember so much of that music growing up young in the 60s and 70s. Just feel a little sadness like they are goodbye messages to their lives, lovers, friends and fans. I'm younger than that, but yeah... in the end priorities change, money means less than real friends and what time is there. I "cut my hair" several years ago ;-)

I met David Crosby a few years ago at a show and his ego was out of control. Nash on the other hand was humble and pleasant to talk to. No matter how you slice it I will always see David Crosby as the weak link to CSNY. I feel definitely in terms of song writing Graham, Neil, Stephen are a step above him. When David was heading out to his tour bus after an early show, we were told by his security to not approach him, not ask for pictures or an autograph. Essentially do not make eye contact with him. The funny thing is, he did not have to go through a very small crowd of us in order to get to his tour bus. He chose to go over by us where Graham Nash was hanging out. I made it a point to tell his entourage as well as him nobody was interested in his autograph and he was the weak link. I know it pissed him off, but he had been a diva all day. Maybe other people are gonna put this guy up on a pedestal, but not me. I have more respect for the working men I met at the show working down on the docks, or putting in a 12 hour day at the factory. They spent their hard earned money to see this guy. If don’t want to interact with them then go your own way.

I don’t know the man so I can enjoy his music without any baggage. But if you read Johnny Rogen’s books on the Byrds and have been following events in recent years then you know that Crosby’s personality has not changed much. I get to enjoy the soup opera that is Crosby’s life. He has had a great life and it’s coming to an end. I wish Crosby well and a long life.

looking forward to this!!!! Cameron Crowe produces and interviews DC. He is apparently very vulnerable, stripped down, and honest!!!! Nice..One of the richest voices in the Age of Rock...a Cat (Leo) of many lives...a survivor who has had his share of trials and tribulation, indulgences of the Rock life, hit rock bottom, hep c, jail, yet knows that LOVE is still the answer and has come back after recreating and rehabilitating himself, with a little help from his friends and some new fresh music inspirations. One of my favorite Hippy Icons of the 60's..the Byrds, CNY, Crosby/Nash ..Ohio, Everybody's been Burned Before, Mind Gardens, Almost Cut My Hair!!!! He also discovered and brought us another musical prodigy, Joni Mitchell! He is a good human being who has given us a treasure trove of music, sweet music. He is a brave and politically active person with passion and heart...speak out against the madness,,you got to speak your mind if you dare...shine on!♌️🌞✌️

I love Croz’s music...I’ve always loved it, even when The Byrds’ popularity took a nose dive, before he left the group. He has never been very astute about rational & moral principles, supplanting them with politics & mysticism. And I’m not sure he even knows how to be a friend. But dammit, his music resonates with me...always has, and probably always will.

To me the most interesting things about David Crosby are his guitar open tunings that permit atypical modes (scales) in his compositions, as well as a jazz-influenced sensibility (as in "Song With No Words/Tree With No Leaves", and others). It is too bad that he lived as he did, as he was likely capable of so much more than ever saw the light of day.

  • @jasper_north

He is as complicated as his music. What I dont like is saying sorry and then expect all to forgive. He is bathing in his own sorrow. And he knows it. Grow up David, you are not a child anymore. Once a real bastard.

    • @gulfgypsy
      @gulfgypsy 5 років тому +4

I agree. He was part of a magical time and played with some of the most incredible artists. But he is ultimately the one who choose the paths he took. He is not the only one to have ever suffered extreme grief losing a loved one -- But he choose to be selfish, use people, abuse himself and those around him. He choose to be irresponsible and only when faced with his own mortality, did he slowly look at the carnage and damage done.
Sometimes saying you're sorry is less about making amends to those you've wronged -- It's about expecting them to forgive you for decades of abuse and going on as if everything is alright.
