"Stop To Love" is my favorite. I met Luther years ago when he was mentoring my neighbor before the accident that changed everything for Jimmy Salvemini, his brother, Larry, and Luther.
VERY favorite Luther song. He was such a treasure. Luther had terrible stage fright and dealt with wildly fluctuating weight issues. Often losing, then regaining 200 lbs. For years, he was too afraid of a solo/headlining career, and sang commercial jingles and back-up for many, including David Bowie, Chaka Khan, Barbara Streisand, Carly Simon, Bette Midler, and Donna Summer. ✌🎶
The great Luther Vandross. I believe this might have been his first hit. You guys have a long line of hits by him to react to, "A House is not a Home" is one of my fav's. He also has a duet with the magnificent Gregory Hines "There's nothing better than love" May they both RIP.
Technically, Luther had a few R&B hits before this, but not under his own name. He was singing lead for bands. Such as "Hot Butterfly" (Gregg Diamond Bionic Boogie), "Got To Have Your Body" (New York City Band), & 2 songs by Change: "Searchin" & "The Glow Of Love". I don't think a lot of people know this, but Luther sings the first line on the song "Brand New Day" from the 1978 movie "The Wiz". He's not actually in the movie though. Before he started his own career, he was a part of a choir that appeared in one of the very early seasons (around 1970) of "Sesame Street". I don't know if it's still up, but there was a clip on UA-cam years ago.
the bass plus his voice are my favorite things about his song!!!!! it's perfection, you could be having the worst day, but if you hear this song you will be so happy for those three to four minutes!!!
Speaking of legendary, you should check out juliaplaysgroove's bass cover of this song. It will make you smile I think. :) ua-cam.com/video/Ostd6ZDJyIs/v-deo.htmlsi=NMZg7HRuY3-jTWu_
World-renowned bass player, Marcus Miller played a prominent role on Luther's first few albums which have a soulful, funky, fresh, bouncy feel on the up tempo cuts, mainly due to Marcus' contributions as bassist and producer. His later songs and albums had more of a pop feel as Luther endeavored to appeal to a crossover audience.
Marcus has said in many interviews that Luther wasn't just a great singer; he was a great musician who had a total grasp of harmonies, melodies, chords, and rhythmic structure. A truly unique talent. RIP Luther.
This was the song that launched his career. A complete vocal anomaly that had total mastery over ad libs, falsetto, and his amazing vocal range. My favorite R&B vocalist/performer...RIP Luther...❤
No voice will ever beat the warm, velvet, smoothness of Luther❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Have you done a reaction of Luther and Gregory Hines singing "There's Nothing Better Than Love"? They are wonderful together and both are so missed!
The very first song of his I ever heard. Was so happy and feel lucky I was around to hear him sing so much more. He was such a beautiful soul and is greatly missed.
This is one of my and my husband’s songs. When we were first dating, this came on the loudspeaker system at his workplace. I had come by to bring him lunch and he stopped what he was doing to grab my by the hand and dance with me while singing the song to me. It’s one of my all time favourite memories from when we first together. This November, we’ll be married for 15 years ❤
“Power of Love/Love Power” and “Stop to Love” are two of my favorite Luther Vandross songs. “Dance With My Father” is a beautiful expression of his grief over the loss of his father. Never fails to bring a tear to my eye.
Was lucky enough to see him live in concert and OMG , what a privilege and an honour to hear his majestic vocal ability. Absolutely one of my all time favourite songs and artist. Try "So Amazing " by Luther, such a beautiful song.
My very favorite entertainer! I got to see him twice. In the beginning of his career and this song was at the top of the charts, in the middle of his career where he had already had multiple number one songs. Gone way too soon❤
I love "Bad boy having a party" by Luther and his duet with Gregory Hines. " There's nothing better than love". "Creep" and "Dance with my father" are also great. Luther is the GOAT.
Luther's catalogue is full of songs like this. The man could sing a ballad so smoothly but get you dancing too. If you want some more upbeat songs he's done, check out "Stop To Love," or "Give Me The Reason" for starters. His "Essential" album has 30 tracks on it and well worth adding to your collection.
My favorite!!!! I went to a Luther concert after only knowing this song but then I became a huge Luther fan!!!! I finally got the first comment and like!!!
If you are going to familiarize yourselves with Luther, you have GOT to see the UA-cam video of him performing "A House Is Not a Home" live at a tribute concert for Dionne Warwick (written by Burt Bachrach of course). I promise that seeing it once will not be enough. One of the best live performance videos you will ever see!
Luther was the man. A true legend and icon. Some of his best includes: Dance with my father, A house is not a home, Superstar, Power of love, Stop to love and so many more...
His first solo single. I was in the Air Force, getting ready to leave the house for work. I'd left the radio on my stereo playing for my daughter. I was in the foyer, about to leave, when the intro to this song I'd never heard before stopped me in my tracks. By the time Luther's vocals kicked in I was doomed to stand there until the song ended. That groove. That voice. The ironic thing was I already owned other albums with Luther Vandross on vocals, when was when the group Change and didn't realize it. Edit: Definitely check Luther singing "A House is Not a Home" live at the NAACP Image Awards. It might be the greatest live vocal performance in popular music history. The song was done before him by Dionne Warwick, which is why she's shown so prominently in the video.
I was very fortunate to say I saw Luther Vandross live in the U.K. on 4 occasions. Every concert was absolutely brilliant. My all time favourite by Miles. He was an exceptional artist and vocalist. He was a perfectionist in every way. Many happy memories concerning his Music and i still play his albums at home every single week, without fail. God bless, RIP Luther ❤️🙏 P.S. .... For his love songs "A House Is Not A Home" or "Superstar/Until You Come Back To Me" are just absolute Classics .... Great reviews you two as always ... Thank you ❤️👏😉🇬🇧
Dance with My Father is a beautiful song and his last top 40 hit before his untimely death in 2005. The song is about his father who passed away when Luther was eight. So all very poignant, a lovely song as usual exquisitely sung ❤
I remember this coming out the year after high school graduation! Loved the entire album. I first heard of Luther through a group called Change, he song lead. Fantastic reaction ❤😊
Before Change, he had the group Luther. And don’t forget he also sang with the group Bionic Boogie. But most importantly he sang background vocals with Roberta Flack, who ends up pushing him out of the nest and helping him get a recording contract when nobody would sign him. *At the time most labels were looking for funk bands, not male solo artists (crooners)*. Roberta told him he was getting too comfortable being in the back and it was time for him to be out front doing his own thing because he was ready for it, and he had been writing his own songs, arranging her background vocals, helping her with her sound and lighting. He was ready. When he played his demos for her she knew he was ready to go do his thing. And she went with him to her agent and to find a label.
Saw him in concert in DC when this album came out. He opened for Aretha! Excellent concert! Love this album! Thank you for choosing this song to highlight!
The concert I went to Luther headlined Sinbad (comedian) opened for him and the Harlem choir played just before. It was a great concert all the way around!! I was so hyped!!
I am blessed that I am able to enjoy all of the music you react to and love seeing your genuine reactions! Yes we played cassettes tapes in our walkmans, took the boom boxes to the beach and in the 70s had 8 tracks. We had the greatest music. Oh yeah I’m 66.
I started going to his concerts when I was 14. Every time he came to Detroit, I had to get tickets. Luther had an amazing voice, and he was so much fun to watch.
Luther was my wife’s favourite artist and we were lucky enough to see him in concert, we had his Endless Love duet with Maria Carey at our wedding and I played it at her funeral. I can’t get through any of his records now without breaking down, today wasn’t any different. Maybe one day 😔
Ahhhhhh my all time fav😁😁😁😁jazz funk we called it in Wales in the 80s🏴🏴🏴the smiles on your faces said it all, fantastic music never dies and listening to it makes me feel soooo young again.💕💕keep going both luv ya🥰🥰
The first time I heard his voice was on one of those schoolhouse rock shorts. I then heard him singing with the group Change and I clearly recognized his voice from schoolhouse rock then he had his solo album which was amazing. I do find it hard to believe you guys haven't heard the songs you play. When I was a kid I listened to everything from country, rock, pop R&B, blues, and big band music. My grandmother always watched Lawrence Welk, I don't think there is a song, singer, or group I haven't heard before. It's great to see your reactions.
Luther was one of a kind - singer, songwriter and producer at a time it was virtually unheard of for an artist to be all three. After years of being a background singer for many major stars, his lead vocals on the hit dance song "The Glow of Love" by group Change made everyone sit up and say who's that?!?! His hit album Never Too Much reached #1 on the R&B charts and the top 20 on Billboard charts and made everyone take notice. His ballads had everyone believing he could be the next Teddy Pendergrass in the baby making music dept. His hit songs include Dont You Know That, Stop To Love, Give Me a Reason, For You To Love, A House Is Not a Home, Superstar/Until You Come Back To Me, So Amazing and numerous others. His hit sing Here and Now became as popular as the Heatwave hit song Always and Forever as the favorite song to be played at weddings in the 90s and onwards. His catalog of hit songs/albums, including duets and live albums, is huge.
It’s ABOUT DAMN TIME. This was my introduction to Luther and still one of my very favorites. Next, you MUST do A House Is Not a Home - my absolute favorite. And PLEASE listen to the album version first to get the full effect. There are some GREAT live versions out there which are great for subsequent listening, but you must listen to the album version first for the full emotional effect.
I was always in to punk and metal but my wife introduced me to Luther when I met her and we went to see him numerous times in various London venues and he is absolutely amazing
This made me smile :) Luther Vandross was, still is, and always will be on my "smooth jazz" lists. If you haven't reacted to "Here and Now" that's a great song about him promising to love his partner forever and faithfully. He was so classy and his music will live on! RIP Mr. Vandross.
Wow, so much to say about this one, after Luther already was performing as background singer for the likes of legends like Patti Labelle and David Bowie in the late 70’s, and after already making a living with his velvet voice doing commercial jingles ( he’s done a lot!) , then after performing with the R&B group Change on there first album and having a hit with them lead singing on the song “Searching”( from 1980, you should check that one out) , he finally did his first solo song and album with this song, and it immediately flew up the charts , and the R&B/ Soul world was never the same cause a legend first became a star! And as soon as I saw this I said “ Amber is gonna love this!”
I always felt Luther used his voice like an playing an instrument. Just changing notes up and down and all over, holding notes and almost breathing out sounds. Have you done, "the best things in life are free"? With Janet Jackson. I think both of them sing in this way like their voices are being played like an instrument.
We had this as our wedding song simply for the lines 'love is a gamble and I'm so glad that I am winning, we've come a long way and yet this is only the beginning '. We celebrate 32 years together and 25 years married this Summer . We ❤Luther !
Sounds like maybe you might go so far back and you might remember a group called the mother's mother's finest anyway I had a song called the baby love now that's some real stuff there at mother's finest now they could get on it
Luther Vandross was one of a kind. PLEASE react to his live version of "A House Is Not A Home" as a tribute to Dionne Warwick at the 1998 NAACP Image Awards. It was a live performance that showcases his ability as a vocalist and performer at his brilliant best. The audience was largely made up of other music and show business professionals (including Dionne Warwick and a very young Janet Jackson) and they are all enthralled! You'll LOVE it!
An 8 track is similar to a cassette tape, just a bit bigger. I loved going to my grandmother's cousin's lake house and listening to 8 tracks on the pontoon boat
This was his first single in the UK, apparently it was my most played song on Spotify in 2022 and the in the top 2% listener to the GOAT Mr Luther Vandross
This song came out when I was in middle school. Love it! A House Is Not A Home (slow, but awesome) was my favorite song by Luther back then. This one is so nice and upbeat.
Luther got his first big break in music with David Bowie's Young Americans album singing backup in 1975. Bowie just moved to New York and was looking for young talent.
You mention sexy, which it is, but Luther was always quick to point out that he didn’t sing about sex. He sang love songs, that everyone can relate to. Have a Blessed Easter!
This is the first song that made our 2 year-old daughter stop, stare at the TV and smile. She just gets giddy when Luther starts singing. I guess it was all the You Tube family music nights we listened to while I was pregnant because this was definitely on the playlist. Luther was such an incredible singer with that velvety voice. You need to hear him and Cheryl Lynn duet on If This World Were Mine. They do a cover of the original song sung by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Both versions are amazing!
Luther is a phenomenal artist. Please try ‘That’s what friends are for’ with Luther, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston. Amazing vocals by them all x
@@scottboswell6406 That version did include Stevie Wonder. It’s his harmonica that opens the song. Stevie, Dionne, Gladys and Elton. Video here: ua-cam.com/video/HyTpu6BmE88/v-deo.html
"Stop To Love" is my favorite. I met Luther years ago when he was mentoring my neighbor before the accident that changed everything for Jimmy Salvemini, his brother, Larry, and Luther.
He can sing the Encyclopedia or the Phone Book and make it sound beautiful. R.I.P. Luther!!!
EXACTLY!
Luther, Alexander O Neil and Quincy. The Best.
Most definitely 🎉
Curtis Mayfield and Marvin gaye... them 2 will always have yo come into the mix

@Michael Asay Yes he was also afraid of coming out.
Still my favorite. Ima dance EVERY TIME!😂
So sad to hear that ..what an amazing guy and what a voice ..Rip Luther ❤
Yep. My favorite song from him as well.
Luther was a vocal beast! One of my faves by him. RIP Luther
Yessssssss❤
“House is not a home” Live version , Tribute to Dion Warrick , is Absolutely insane vocals. Must react to that.
I have been suggesting this for a year, but no luck. At least we know how great it is. But it has to be the naacp awards show version.
This is a total Amber Special. She will absolutely fall in love with this song
YES! 💯
i cry every time I watch it!!
I soooo agree. I loved him singing that live.

Yes!!! Luther
Before he went solo he was the lead singer of a group called Change. Two of their biggest hits that he sang were "Glow of Love" and "Searching"
This was his first single in the UK, apparently it was my most played song on Spotify in 2022 and the in the top 2% listener to the GOAT Mr Luther Vandross
Soul man…..check out his Dance with my Father, a beautiful song
This was his first breakout hit. This is Classic Soul at best!
Yeah!!!
This song came out when I was in middle school. Love it! A House Is Not A Home (slow, but awesome) was my favorite song by Luther back then. This one is so nice and upbeat.
One of the greatest vocals in music. R&B There will never be another like him. RIP LUTHER🌺🎂
Gotta have a Luther picture on that wall back there imo
Was lucky enough to see Luther in concert ... So talented. RIP
My favourite Luther Vandross song “This House Is Not A Home”
Alright my babies.... The smoothness and grooveness of Luther Vandross is timeless ‼️🔥🔥🔥🎤🔥🎶😁👍🏼
This takes me back to a childhood road trip. Dad just kept hitting replay. At the end of the trip I knew the words to every song.😂😂
You must react to Luther live at 1988 NAACP Image Awards 'A House is not a home', fantastic
Nobody smoother than Luther. Miss that voice. His final album is awesome
Luther got his first big break in music with David Bowie's Young Americans album singing backup in 1975. Bowie just moved to New York and was looking for young talent.
Cool song. Very Groovy.
Luther started his career as backing vocals for David Bowie.
Luther is a phenomenal artist. Please try ‘That’s what friends are for’ with Luther, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston. Amazing vocals by them all x
When was that version? I just know the one with Dionne, Gladys Knight, and Elton John.
@@scottboswell6406 That version did include Stevie Wonder. It’s his harmonica that opens the song. Stevie, Dionne, Gladys and Elton. Video here: ua-cam.com/video/HyTpu6BmE88/v-deo.html
@@scottboswell6406 1987 I believe
@@kimcook991 Thanks!
So silky smooth and downright sexy vocals of the gone-too-soon Luther
Love Luther ❤❤
He Also Had A Super Beautiful Personality & Soul. Absolutely Loved Him. ❤❤❤
