  • In this quick scale modeling tutorial we are going to go trough the steps that I use when I have to apply heat and exhaust stains. This is two or three steps process which is quite easy but it is important to take your time and apply multiple light layers of each filter that we are going to use.

    I mixed Vallejo 70.861 Glossy Black with Vallejo 71.261 Thinner in proportions 1:20. I have never used so much thinner before for anything! Airbrush is Iwata Eclipse 0.35 mm. Pressure is 12 PSI (~0.7 Bar). I press down to get only air, and then very gradually pull back to add paint. Every few seconds, I keep getting a sharp black speck of paint. I believe I mixed the paint and the thinner well. I am cleaning the nozzle every 10 seconds or so of painting. (After each cleaning, I make a shot into the air, shooting only air without paint, to eliminate any possible remaining drops of cleaner.) I thought the problem might be with the specific bottle of black paint, but I tried with Vallejo 71.057 (Matte) Black paint, and I had exactly the same problem.
    I also get some splotches (an elliptical black edge with a lighter interior).
    Any idea what might be causing the problems?

      To be fair I avoid using waterbased acrylics at all cost. So I really know nothing about airbrushing acrylics. With that said mixing clear varnish in the paint works well with other types to get more 'sprayable' dilution ratio and a nice transparency of the paint

      @@MMScaleModels Thank you. I will test adding clear varnish. Does it matter if the varnish is gloss, satin, or matt?

    • @MMScaleModels
      @MMScaleModels  Рік тому

      @@jesusdapena1296 it matters only for your finish, adding matt varnish to gloss paint will make it less glossy or even satin and matt depending on the ratio

    I never use the airbrush for exhaust stains. In my opinion to a fine powder grinded artist chalks applied with a soft brush on a flat or semi flat surface looks far realistic. Don't forget research how the exhaust trails course looks, straight backwards is mostly wrong, the exhaust fumes follows the aerodynamically air flow. A good example is the A-1 Skyraider, the exhaust stains follows the air flow over the wings upper side.

      Doesn't the fine powder artist chalk approach produce some individual black spots within the desired fuzzy trail? I don't think those black dots look very realistic. Is there a way to avoid them?

    What type paint and thinner do you use for the black filter? what is the ratio of paint to thinner too please?
    thank yuo for your videos! You are helping this newbie out a lot :)

    • @MMScaleModels
      @MMScaleModels  6 років тому +2

      Happy to help mate :) The paint and thinner does not matter as long as they are compatible. I have used mr. Hobby gloss black and Mr. Leveling thinner in this instance. The ratio is , as always, eyeballed. Here is a starting point - 0.5 ml of thinner and paint on the tip of a brush, not a blob, just a little. Then mix it well, spray on some scrap plastic piece ( ideally with primer or matt paint on it) and see if it works for you. You can always add thinner or paint... incrementally. Hope that helps.

      MM Scale Models One thing I seem to notice about so many of these helpful video guides regarding painting models is the narrator never mentions the TYPE of paint to apply. I know you experienced modelers probably take that for granted, but novices are kinda feeling their around paint compatibilities, I. E., latex, lacquer, acrylic, enamel, oil, etc.... their basic characteristics, what is best to use with what, and when to use, etc., etc. I haven’t found a good tutorial yet that focuses on this topic.

    • @MMScaleModels
      @MMScaleModels  6 років тому +1

      Well in most cases it doesn't even matter. Use what suits your taste and preferences and not what somebody tells you to. Besides there are graphics on my videos that are showing what have I used in this instance.
      Thanks for your comment, feedback is super important for me!

      @@MMScaleModels Can you advise how to airbrush this highly diluted paint? Usually if the paint is diluted too much you get spatters.

    • @MMScaleModels
      @MMScaleModels  4 роки тому +2

      You will have to find the air pressure that fits your dilution, some experiments are necessary. Another reason for spatter is paint droplets accumulation on the nozzle which get blown on the model when you release the air. I suggest to try pressing the trigger first and then pulling on it. You can try also if just pressing the trigger will result paint coming off the nozzle. This may lead you to the reason for your issue.

    • @MMScaleModels
      @MMScaleModels  4 роки тому

      Hi John, few things you can do there. 1. Try pulling the trigger verry slightly. Or 2. Move further away from the surface. Or 3. Keep the air pressure and add paint untill you are happy or 4. Add matt or satin varnish instead of paint
      Hope it works for you

    Very poor video. Exhaust stains on an aircraft, especially the Hellcat in this video didn’t just stain the exterior. The high temperatures charred the paint closest to the exhausts. Black is not the color to use. Varying shades of a lighter brown in multiple applications. Your’s are not realistic.
