I liked this video. Could you perhaps add a section comparing the non-duplex sound of one piano to the duplex sound of another?

great discussion Robert. I personally like some Bluthners that do not use duplex scaling but that (at least those i played) had an extra string that is not struck but that i believe work similarly by enhancing tone w sympathetic vibrations. thoughts on this old Bluthner approach? I haven't played enough on them side by side w a contrasting piano w duplex to know which i like better, but i did like the sound of a few big really expensive Bluthners i tinkered with. thanks for a great video//ddpii

Aliquot stringing! These extra fourth strings are not struck by the hammers and are tuned an octave above the base note. These strings are transmitting their vibrations onto the soundboard like the regular ones and also need to be dampened.

That Blüthner system is known as aliquot stringing. I've read that it's not liked by tuners as it gives them extra work to tune the aliquot strings, and for this reason it's rare to find one where the aliquot strings have not been removed or muted by tuners! In my opinion it's questionable whether any of these tricks, duplex scaling or aliquot stringing, actually makes much difference to what you hear. There are great pianos that have none of it; it seems to be mostly marketing.

Robert, to my knowledge Bösendorfer implemented duplex scaling for a short period of time and then defaulted back to their original scaling. Are Bösendorfers with duplex scaling worth the cost?

Is tuning a duplex piano any different than one without?
