So interesting. I know the creators that make very little outweigh the creators that make enough to live on…Thank you for sharing. I do know a pair of creators that started
On YT more than 17 years ago that ending up selling their company for millions. I appreciate the knowledge you’ve shared with us on this video,

Thank you for sharing this and being so upfront and honest about it, Joel. So many creators refuse to talk about the financial side of things and I think it makes people believe alot of misinformation or misconceptions because they have no idea what the truth is. This is why I have been a viewer of yours for so long, because I feel like u are honest and upfront about things, and u let us into your world and let us feel like we actually mean something to you as well. It ends up feeling more like a casual friendship rather than business to a consumer relationship.

I think it is fascinating about UA-cam and pay. I follow this 30 year old who has done UA-cam since she was a young teenager for fun. I watched her bc I thought news reporting was interesting career (I feel the same about flight attendant) and she popped up in my algorithm. Anywho, She went to college, became a news reporter, got up at 2:30 am and was really not enjoying her job after 5 or 6 years reporting. She was feeling really unwell a lot, she would have night sweats, anxiety and sleep walking because she was so stressed by her job and all the things. Like stressing over, over sleeping, if there would be breaking news or if her story she planned would still be the story when she woke up, etc. A little over a year ago. She decided to quit reporting after in one month she made more on YT than she made a year in salary reporting. She thought why keep doing this job and being miserable when I could continue YT until I want to go back to corporate work if ever. She has been so happy since she left her job at news reporting.

I love you, and I love your videos. And I can see the effort you put into making them. I get a little jealous at times that you are able to do things you love, or do some ordinary things like taking the dogs for a walk, going out to eat, etc., and making a video out of it. You thus get paid for doing things the rest of us don't get paid for. But the fact is you somehow make those everyday things interesting enough for people to watch! I mean, I never thought I would sit and watch someone taking his dogs for a walk! So you deserve it. I can't afford to become a member or to send you gifts...I wish I could. But I do enjoy watching what I can.

I love your videos! Will you please do a video for Americans that want to know the cost of living in England? You could show some homes and show how much it cost to rent or buy a home there. Great video and very informative. Good that you managed to get the "Finance"/"Income" aspect in there.
Hope this is now your highest paying video for you. (Mostly the ads on this video are for dog food and cameras so far).
The only reason I haven't become a member is that I follow so many content creators on UA-cam, that I'd be bankrupt if I became a member of all my favorites, and I'm not even on UA-cam all the time!

an excellent video and I really appreciated learning so much about UA-cam. I enjoy the videos you make and I look forward to your next one. The problem as I see it however, is not for the fact that are ads but that there are so many ads it destroys the effect of the video playing. It is bad enough that ads have ruined TV but to have so many more on UA-cam, it is just too much! I just got through with a problem with UA-cam and I am so frustrated with them I can't see straight. They have no one to talk with about any problem that arises so one is stuck out in left field with no one to turn to! Here in the US they have also restricted certain types of free speech and that is a bummer so where I once enjoyed UA-cam, except for those channels I subscribe to, UA-cam sucks and with this latest problem, I am afraid that this is the beginning of the end for internet and UA-cam and I hate that because I do enjoy watching all those that I subscribe too. Take care and have a nice evening!

Hey @thejoelwood, another great vid! Thanks for sharing this. You went through all the points I was hoping for that I learned as I built my YT channel (not under this name though lol). It was fun to hear your take on all of it thoroughly compared to what I've learned. Before this I never considered different CPM/RPM for different locations, but it's logical, for the reasons you stated. I think the top 3 are US, UK, AU? Anyway, I've been watching you and Lia since probably around 2015 and love you both (I miss the 2 of you; hopefully y'all can do cameos sometimes 😁.) You were one of my inspirations for my channel, so thank you! Looking forward to more, as always! (By the way, I always have such secret fun seeing your stats on VidIQ when I visit! 😜!)

Wow!!! I finally understand. I could never really figure out how views/subs/ads worked. You were so clear. Thanks!! What about people like me (sorry?) who do pay for YT premium? Am I a freeloader? Do you not earn any money from me? I always imagine liking, viewing and commenting at least adds to the algorithm which will send your videos to more people. I try and comment on every video just for that reason.
I know the struggle with making videos. As a teacher over quarantine, I made a video for math, reading comprehension, writing, phonics, each 4x a week, which was 16 videos. And then once a week, music, art, science and social studies. So that's 20 videos a week. They were never longer than 15 minutes each. I would go into my empty school one day a week, and film from 7:30 in the morning to 5 at night. It was exhausting. Luckily I have a background in theater and honestly thought it was super fun.

Income tax I would imagine also eats into your figure. As far as ads, that is the reason I use UA-cam Premium AND when youtube channels go into "selling" I click away and go elsewhere. My UA-cam preferences are old movies and TV shows. Glad that the bulk of my income comes from unearned income (investments). We enjoy watching your channel. I think that if you do more videos of you and Keegan "away on a couple's weekend" at a nice destination, that would earn some money. More of "The day and live of Joel & Keegan", more of the same. I think that is what many come to see. Personally, I like "Joel in a new town and new relationship". Another favorite channel Cruise with Ben & David. They are constant cruisers and wonder if they spend more time at sea rather than land. What I like about them, two friendly people discussing their cruise by taking the viewer along for the ride. That I think is what keeps viewers coming back.

Interesting video Joel, you covered a lot of questions I had. One thing you didn't cover though, is what is the importance of the number of 'likes' and 'comments' that is sought by UA-camrs? Very interesting...I've wondered how it all works. I've never understood why people judge how much money someone can earn at their job. As long as it's legal and not hurting anyone, why not be happy for everyone's success? I enjoy the videos I choose to watch on a regular basis so why shouldn't the creators make money for their entertainment content? I do find the ads irritating at times but not so much that I'm willing to pay a monthly fee so that's on me. It actually helps to know you are getting something from it. I wish you continued success!

Let’s hope this video gets lots of views! 😂 As for the brand deals - I give you so much credit for not just endorsing anything, it would be hard not to accept the income. But it’s just another reason why we love you and your videos, because you are authentic in all you do. 🥰 And you should never change, because as you said, you could lose viewers in the long run, and we wouldn’t want you to leave YT! ☹️ But I will say that we do need that toilet seat IG/TikTok post, I’m so curious what you were planning. 🤣 Enjoy Miami! 🌞

You have the right attitude of not putting too much pressure on yourself to do this job. If you did, you would not be as genuine nor even enjoy your work. That is the most important thing - to enjoy and love your work. I was fortunate in my career as a healthcare financial consultant. I loved the company, my clients, my co-workers and the value that I brought to my customers. Good for you and thank you!!! Regards!

Thank you so much for this! I love the behind the scenes info. And while you owe no one any sort of explanation, I'm really grateful to have a much better understanding of how it works to be a content creator and even the financial aspect of it which I did not have a clue about. I've always been impressed that you can do as much as you do and now I just have even more respect for all of what you put into each and every little clip. I know it was a lot but now I really have a better idea.

lol it's always interesting because as viewers we have no idea what kind of money you guys make. Well, I simply don't have the personality to do youtube as a living, I'm too self-conscious lol. Appreciate that you do it and I enjoy a lot of your videos 🙂

I have a question, maybe for next time. You commented that Views are important but what is considered a view? If I just pop in on a video but decide I don’t like or am not interested in the content and quickly exit does that count as a view or do I have to stay for the entire video for it to count as a view? For example I might see a video that sounds like it might be interesting content but then I open it and the Utuber is just obnoxious but thinks they are being very clever and I will close it down without a LIKE. That leads to another question. How important are LIKES and what happens if you give it a thumbs down? By the way you are not one of those obnoxious ones I am talking about. Love your content and have been subscribed for long time. Thanks for your honesty.

This was an interesting video and you presented it in a really nice way, personal but professional too. I was wondering how you make money on UA-cam…I thought it was by how many views you get or if you got different amounts of money if someone watched your entire video vs only part of it. I did see that while I was watching a banking video did pop up so hopefully you got a little extra Ka-Ching! Off of it!

I love your Instagram, you are very funny. I got Airbnb and Waitrose ads during this video if that's of interest! Don't feel bad if you feel making money this way is easy compared to others, that is kudos to you for being savvy. We work to live as they say, not live to work.

I always love watching your videos. Surprisingly, much of what you said here today, some of these topics you explained in pieces during your pandemic videos. It's sad some people get into who works harder than others. We all work hard at our jobs. I think some people are unhappy in their jobs and think others have it easy. It's great some of your videos rack in some good money.😊❤
