- Surprise in the women's road race at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (2021) Anna Kiesenhofer breaks the hegemony of the Dutch and takes the gold medal. Latin American cyclists are protagonists.
67 runners took the start in the test, being the members of the Dutch team, made up of Demi Vollering, winner of the course by the tour de France, being archival favorites. Marianne Vos Olympic champion in 2012, Annemiek Van Vleuten world champion in 2019 and current European champion, and the current gold medal of the Rio 2016 games Anna Van Der Breggen. A team feared by where it was seen. Attention was focused on whether someone could fight for the gold medal, and among the most prominent opponents were the names of Elisa Longo Borghini from Italy, Katarzina Niewiadoma from Poland and the British Elizabeth Deignan.
From Latin America 7 competitors were present. The Cuban Arlenis Sierra, Yareli Salazar from Mexico, Maria José Vargas from Costa Rica, Teniel Campbell from Trinidad and Tobago, Paula Patiño from Colombia, Agua Marina Espínola from Paraguay, and the Chilean Catalina Soto.
The 137 kilometer track offered a rough terrain with 2,500 meters of positive unevenness distributed in two ports, both in the second half of the race. The first of them at kilometer 80 and then the kagosaka Pass, to then lead to the fuji speedway autodrome where they would have to do a previous lap before crossing the finish line.

Carla Oberholzer from South Africa, Vera Looser from Namibia, Anna Plichta from Poland, Anna Kiesenhofer from Austria and Omer Shapira from Israel. . Catalina Soto and Agua Marina Espinola jump from the group. Together they work in coordination and manage to take up to three minutes for the group.
The alarms go off on the orange team. Annemiek Van Vleuten goes down to her team's car to solve a mechanical problem and receive instructions, as we must remember that intercoms are not allowed for this race. Marianne Vos comes down from the group to help her and takes her back to the front.
When passing through the first port, the group of 5 escapes is left without the representatives of South Africa and Namibia. The three now leaders are still almost eleven minutes apart and the lot, instead of cutting back, is seeing how the seconds increase.
The descent arrives and they enter to complete the first step on the fuji speedway, Van Vleuten is neutralized and there are some other individual attempts that are not fruitful either. At the top, the Austrian suffers and tries to manage the difference but it is seen that her pedaling is not the same at the beginning.
The bell that announces the last lap rings, the oranges have finally started to set the pace to cut differences, they catch up with Plichta and Shapira who came from the initial break and begin to position themselves for a possible sprint at the end. Once again Van Vleuten is the protagonist and attacks again but this time on the last kilometers. She draws a light of difference and the attempt encourages the Italian Elisa Longo who also separates and wants to go for a medal.
Ahead the Austrian Kiesenhofer faces the last meters to the finish line, the bet of an early attack has worked out wonderfully. She was never on anyone's predictions and that helped her stay off the radar. After being on the run from kilometer zero, she reaches the finish line in disbelief at the feat she has just achieved. The doctor in mathematics who until today did not run in a professional team has just been crowned Olympic cycling champion.
A little more than a minute later Van Vleuten arrives and raises her arms as if she had won the test. Few seconds had to pass before they warned him that someone else had come forward. Still, this lady's courage is to exalt herself, after staying off the lot, falling off her bike, and being neutralized in an attack. She had the courage to try one more time. As her prize the silver medal that she could not hang in the past games. Elisa Longo arrives in third place and repeats her performance in Rio 2016 where she was also bronze.

I watched the entire TV recording again. In the peleton you can see the stars riding relaxed with her arms stretched out. They think of a good, cozy day and they will sprint for the places in the last few kilometers. This race shows exactly the difference between the controlled professional races and the Olympics. Professional racing is all about tactics and a lot of money. All nations and their drivers have the same chances here. Thanks to the German driver who woke the peleton from its sleep after an hour. I think of Mark Cavendish’s meeting with Eddy Merckx after winning 35 stages in the Tour de France. Yes, says Eddy Merckx, that’s nice. But I won the stages alone without radios or tactics. I would like to thank the three drivers, Omer Shapira from Israel, Anna Plichta from Poland and Anna Kiesenhofer from Austria, who made this race worthy oft the Olympics. With the will to win and the mental attitude I would like to compare Anna Kiesenhofer with Eddy Merckx for this race. My respect!
