"And the men who hold high places must be the ones who start, to mold a new reality closer to the heart." I heard this in my youth, and it has had a profound effect on my life.
To me, this song is one of the most Canadian sounds you can hear. Growing up in Canada in the 70s and 80s, this song was everywhere, and Geddy's vocals sound like a crisp, cold winter day - in the best possible way. Terrific stuff, and as always, it's a lot of fun getting to ride along with you as you hear a gem like this for the first time. Here I am at my desk, grooving with Airplay Beats again - peace and love from up north, and all the best for 2024!
what a great description. Thank you. I got into music sort of late, so Rush is one of the first bands - along with Jethro Tull - to really open my eyes around '78-80. Happy New Year.
@@Ferretbomber Tull, Queen, Heart, Rush, The Who, Dire Straights, Pink Floyd (not in that order :) )... They're like the staple of my early to mid-teens and then they didn't really let up.
Rush is the living embodiment of the word synergy. We are blessed to experience the sum of their parts. I believe their love for one another is at the heart of their genius. They raised each other up.
It can be argued that all three members carry the band at different times. They are all magnificent musicians. Neil's drumming and lyric writing are unique and astounding, Geddy's bass and vocals are sensitive and masterful, while Alex's guitar is so versatile and adaptive that he's really the glue that keeps everything together. Plus his lead solos knock me on my ass. They are the PERFECT trio, and I can't see any two of them being successful without the third. When they all found each other, it was pure magic.
🤯 Honestly Alex is a freaking Chameleon. Songs like Necromancer, 2112, La Villa, Natural Science, Red Barchetta absolutely slaaaaaay me because of Alex. 🤩 Seeing them regularly play live at MSG every few yrs was a blessing I'm grateful for. 🥰🐰
This is a song where they really show each of the 3 are in the top of theirs instruments and jobs why would all have been great in any other band if they never knew each other.
Their extension to this song in concert is a journey in itself. You don’t need another video for it, but for your own benefit you should catch a live version of this one.
🤔 I was thinking once, they do some Live Rush 😉 they'll be as addicted to Live Rush as we are! 🤗 Blessed to see the Band perform the long version many times at MSG, my "local Venue". 😒 Eventually I became an Adult, got a job and 😂 no longer had to use bday, Xmas & babysitting $ to sit in the nosebleed section behind Knicks & Rangers Banners. 😁🥰🐰
Listen to this song in “Live From Rio - Rush” - the whole stadium was singing every word. It was awesome! The lyrics were written by the drummer, Neil Peart
Hemispheres is their fifth album, with Closer to the Heart and The Trees on the coming Hemispheres album alluding to what was to come, shorter, more radio-friendly songs. the Spirit of Radio, Freewill on the next album, Permanent Waves, and then Tom Sawyer, Limelight, on Moving Pictures, Subdivisions, The Analog Kid on Signals. This was when Rush really took off.
💃🏿 HAPPY! HAPPY! 💃🏿 JOY! JOY! 🤗 This is the bestest 🎄 gift EVER! 😍 Gosh, I love you guys! 🥰 Happy Holidays & thanks for feeding your ravenous fans! 😆 Ok... ME! 😉 And Debbie! 😁🐰
I glad to see you guys warming up to Rush. The more you listen, the more you will appreciate how amazing they are. Please do "La Villa Strangiato." It's considered by many one of the greatest prog rock instrumentals. You guys will love it!
Geddy was such a fucking monster singer when he was in his 20s. Ill never understand how he was able to sing that high in full voice, not falsetto, WITH vibrato. Impossible. Supremely talented. Then his bass playing 😳
I just finished Geddy Lee's autobiography. I am not a huge fan of the band but I enjoy memoirs and autobiographies. I have a new appreciation of their music after reading his story. Rush was very popular when I was in high school in the early 1980s so I know a lot of their music. I didn't realize how much it stuck with me until I hear a song on the radio and realize I know it pretty well. This one got a lot of airplay. They still aren't the band I pick to listen to first, but I do think they're talented and Geddy seems like a really great person. I find now that I feel like I "know" Geddy from reading his life story, I enjoy the music more.
The Bassist is the lead singer. That's Geddy Lee. The lead guitarist is Alex Lifeson and the drummer is the late great Neil Peart. Every part of this band is essential but Neil was the glue and he wrote the lyrics.
All three are musicians are of the highest caliber. Alex is sometimes under appreciated. As a guitarist, trust me....Alex's comp.s, rhythms and leads are stratospheric and especially for his time. Listen to "Cut to the Chase"....whoa! Alex composed and recorded the lead in 3 takes! Always here for Rush. Nice!
Alex's problem was, he was in Rush. No reason he shouldn't be mentioned as often as the usual guitar gods. But how do you stand out when you play with Geddy and The Professor?
🙋🏿♀️ Raise your hand if you 😊 grinned ear-to-ear when they sang the Chorus! 🤗 Don't lie! 😂 We kept telling you, "thangs changed" when 🥁 The Professor joined! 😊 This was the best! 😁 This makes my constant Rush Reactions re-play list! 🥰🐰
RUSH rarely played this song in concert in their later years ( maybe cause they had played it so much already lol ), but I heard that when they did the RUSH IN RIO concert, they put the song in their show because so many people in South America wanted to hear this song live, so the boys did it for them. I've seen RUSH in concert many times and I honestly cant remember them playing this song ( I could be wrong ), but I've always loved it. Thanks for doing this one. If you do another, can I please request you do LOSING IT? It's one of their most under-rated, but amazing songs, with great lyrics as always. Thanks and keep smiling❤👍
About the Yes video you almost put up - 'Your Move': In the 70s we listened to whole albums (we had more time). Especially a band like Yes. In my mind, 'Your Move' is part of a larger piece. Chris and the rest of the boys are about to come in hard right when it ends.
If you wanna know just how amazing Neil is, listen to the original studio recording of "Working Man" a few times (so you're familiar with John Rutsey's drum part) and then listen to Neil's arrangement of "Working Man" on the live album "All The World's A Stage".
Or 💡 they could just watch the Live in Cleveland version and see him play it. 🤯 Still can't believe how blessed I was to see them when they played MSG every 3 or 4 years! 😁 And with new songs off new Albums all the way up to being totally mezmorized during R40, Clockwork Angels & Time Machine Tours. 🙏🏿 RIP Neil Peart
@@cityhonors1 The Cleveland version is completely different. As he aged, he sometimes didn't play drum parts as originally recorded, often simplifying them. The degree of difficulty of the early days was reduced with the more improvisational approached adopted after the tragedies.
