I'm not a musician or lesbian but when I discovered the Indigo Girls in college (in the late 90s), it changed my life. Those ladies opened and expanded my worldview. They influenced my politics and my beliefs. Such special and talented humans - and still southerners, just like me. They have a huge place in my heart, and so do you, Brandi. I was lucky to see you perform with the Nashville Symphony many years ago. What a night!

Artist like the Indigo Girls opened doors for so many. It is great that Brandi Carlile recognizes and respects them as the spectacle artist an human beings they are.

How is it that this discussion alone is making me emotional?! The IG were my first and longest musical loves, and Brandi is a close second. I know they are connected but I LOVE hearing about their intertwined stories.

Before hearing this I loved Brandi's voice, but didn't know her full history with the Girls. I'm glad she shows her gratitude. I cried because it brought back what ridicule they had to suffer, how brave they were. I had spent almost 2 years listening to them live once a week, singing those glorious harmonies and they were being appreciated, and then I moved but I was so happy for them that they had a hit song... I wasn't gay, but I thought the world had improved a Little bit. My husband was a musician, but he never ridiculed them. It always seemed to be the people on tv making fun of their looks! When I saw them live, they were just two pretty young women--believe me, better looking than most of us in the audience! Then suddenly people in the media were calling them names, with an attitude they wouldn't have dared to have about men! It was wrong and disgusting and far from Christian behavior from those self-righteous morons.

Brandi is so humble, so gracious, so loving. I can only imagine how proud and a little embarrassed the Indigo Girls are by this. Thank you Indigo Girls for helping to bring Brandi to us and sharing your art and heart with all of us. #GODBLESS YOU ALL.

The Indigo Girls literally saved my life. So much love and respect. Brandi is incredible and will be a legend; the girls are untouchable musically, civically, and just pure class. Thanks for this interview, and giving props where it is so so lacking.

As a long-time superfan of the Indigo Girls, and as a person who discovered Brandi through them, this interview had me grinning from ear to ear the whole time. I so wish I could have seen one of their shows with Brandi joining them - I hope to have that chance one day - gonna hold you to that Brandi!
It was really fantastic to hear Brandi's perspective as a superfan herself, and the ways that she was influenced by them. Hearing about her love for Amy and Emily as humans, her passion for their musical artistry and activism was really touching. And then to hear about Emily meeting Joni, and knowing that Joni was a *huge* influence on Emily - aaaaah!!!
Thank you for the excellent interview! Glad to see the Indigo Girls getting the recognition that they so very much deserve!

As a gay man who learned guitar because of the Indigo Girls, this interview had me in tears! (I'm the same age as Brandi, and she is equally amazing). Thank you Brandi, for shining a light on our icons who don't often get recognized, and thank YOU for continuing the journey as a queer person. Cannonball is still kept in my nighttime playlist. (And as a bartender in a gay bar in NYC, that incredible Grammy performance of The Joke will always be featured, alongside Amy and Emily videos.)

The Indigo Girls' music was first introduced to me in 1990 by a dear friend. Their music (and her friendship) changed my life. I can relate to everything Brandi speaks too, only a decade earlier. Their message, and harmony touched my soul. And to see that certain communities banned their performances because they were gay absolutely disgusted me. Their music stayed with me throughout the years to include two long deployments to Iraq as an Army nurse. Not sure where this post goes, but many thanks to the Indigo Girls and Brandi Carlile.

Swamp Ophelia was a groundbreaking album for me as well. Was really impressed by the sound and the quality of the writing. 1994 was such a great year for music and I knew I was getting old when there were adults who hadn't been born when that album was made. Mirror Blue by Richard Thompson was my other favourite from that year.
BTW, as I recall they had a gig cancelled at one school called Irmo High; I was on the IG mailing list in the mid-90s and I only heard about that one cancellation. How many just didn't book them though, I don't know.
I wonder what Joni Mitchell really thought of Ghost. I know she doesn't think much of folkies and doesn't consider herself one and when asked (by a writer for Mojo magazine in 1994) about young female singer-songwriters and her influence on them, she said "I've had girls come up to me and tell me how influenced they are by me, and then they get up and play and they sound like the Indigo Girls!". That said, I love Joni's early work but it really went down the chute from the 80s onward. A lot of female singer-songwriters would name Joni as an influence because she's a woman, but are at least as much influenced by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Robbie Robertson, Richard Thompson and other big male folk-rock artists of the same era.

The last paragraph IS one reason Brandi Carlile IS trying to "grow" pools of available female writers and performers to turn to for guidance.
