    Shock Waves is quite cool and original, but low budget though and you really feel for Peter Cushing walking and running through the mud at quite an old age. Still, he can't help but be great in it and he's one of my favourite actors anyway so I would definitely recommend that. Vertical Limit is one I have not seen strangely enough and Beast in the Cellar I had not even heard of: that last one goes straight on my watchlist.

    Shock-waves is a fantastic mid 70s schlock film thats shot very well, it's far better than most people think it's going to be, and Evolution is a highly underated comedy/Sci-fi

    Shockwaves is worthy to pickup. I enjoyed Gator however never owned physical media copy but watched on TCM as a double feature along with White Lightening when TCM underground was still a running series. It’s a good one! 👍

    Shock Waves was one I picked up in my dingy rental store basement once upon a time. About 7 years ago I revisited it with a pal of mine... it blows. We watched it because I have the score on vinyl and me and my pal would listen to it from time to time.

    I've heard of Gator, never realised that it was a sequel though. Bit odd that it contains part 2 of documentary that isn't "available" in the UK.
    The Beast in the Cellar is an ok horror that use to be a regular on the BBC when I was a kid, it was heavily cut on release and was rumoured to be a shadow of what it could have been. It's on YT if you want to try before you buy.
    Best bit about Shockwaves is that near iconic poster/boxart - Cushing gives his all.

    Great to see Evolution finally get a Blu-ray release here in the UK. It’s all very silly in an Ivan Reitman Ghostbusters style but good fun. Maybe interested in a couple more but at £17 you’re talking Criterion price and I just wouldn’t put an 88 films Blu-ray on the same level.

    • @nicholasrope6067
      @nicholasrope6067 8 місяців тому +1

      I think Criterion releases are over £20 new now

    • @modestyblaise4167
      @modestyblaise4167 8 місяців тому

      @@nicholasrope6067 You’re right and I won’t pay that. £17.99 was JUST about doable, depending on the movie/package. They’ve even price their Digi-pack releases at £25.99 which is ludicrous. The only reasonably priced deals on new Criterion releases are the 4K ones for £29.99 from HMV with a 20% friend code making the £23.99 each. Prices have been creeping up to uncomfortable levels across the board recently and I can see physical becoming a niche like Vinyl is now.

    Shock Waves (aka Death Corps) is grungy but pretty good. Some of the supporting cast are a bit ropey, but it does have Peter Cushing, John Carradine and Brooke Adams. The action is surprisingly bloodless for a horror film of this period, but there are some creepy sequences, and the zombies are of the non-flesheating variety.
    The Beast in the Cellar is rather talky, but it's interesting to see Beryl Reid and Flora Robson starring together in a horror film (although they both had supporting roles in other fright flicks). Apparently, Dame Flora hated doing the movie, but Miss Reid looks like she's having a ball (especially as she has a great deal of exposition to deliver). The film also features Tessa Wyatt (some may remember her from 70s' sitcom Robin's Nest).

    Hey Graham. Not sure what to make of this eclectic variety of releases.
    Here are some interesting items but just wondering why 88Films are continuing to dilute their established brand with more early 2000 tepid mainstream movies?!?
    Obviously it’s down to wholesale job lot deals with distribution companies but Vertical Limit and Evolution are a little off base just like Loch Ness. This is a minor gripe but curious to see the direction 88 Films are going in…….
    The two Vault films Gator & Shockwaves are really the only essential buys from my perspective. Shockwaves is fun & I already own the Blue Underground Blu-ray, so not sure if I need is version. Gator is pretty fun, not quite as good as White Lightning. Hope some Boutique in the UK eventually pounce on the underrated Hustle, another Burt Reynolds 70s movie.
    Beast in the Cellar is fine

    • @manvfilm
      @manvfilm  8 місяців тому

      Gator and shockwaves are the two I’m really looking at. Pretty much most Reynolds from the 70’s early 80’s would be fine by me.

    Quite a big slate here eh. Quite a few am going to get, Evolution, Virtual limit, Gator Shock Waves and Fearless Hyena II all at some point.
    Am a bit behind on some of 88's recent releases so might not pre order but will get them at some point.
    Having to scale a bit back on the HK releases though, so many i have and not watched yet and some of these i smell might not be that great.

      I’ve noticed that most of the 88 films titles hang about, there is a sale on Amazon at the moment that’s where I got the first skirt movie and long arm of the law. Was tempted by blue jean monster, but there is only so much money and even less time.

    Fearless Hyena 2 is atrocious. Its barely a film and even less a Jackie Chan one. I'd maybe watch some clips online of the non-Jackie fights to see if anything grabs you. The Skirts films are also an acquired taste, mostly comedy with some baller action bookending them, and apparently that's mostly the same setup in all 4.
