I'll never forget the first time I saw Peter Dinklage in a role. It was the first time ever I saw a little person represented as an actual real human being. It had a strong impact on me and made me realize how much prejudice I had in me, even though I've never met a little person in real life. It's a truly bizzarre and dumb part of our culture

@@winterbear6290 Exactly. I still remember when he played that little author in the film "Elf" who was mistakened for, well, an Elf. He was made out to be the villain because he got rightfully angry at being talked down to for his height.

They are not miniature adults, they are adults. They are human! I'm 4 foot 10 and people look down on me. Don't take me seriously. Treat me like a child. Ask me how's the weather down there. This is normally when I'm at work. People have sang, "its a small world after all." Even one coworker pointed out a petite lady and said look, "she's shorter then you!!!!" I was so embarresed. I told her that was rude! I felt so ackward and outraged. I went up to the other lady and wanted to say sorry but she walked away from me. I felt by looking into her eyes that me saying sorry wasn't going to help her feel better. I felt sooooo aweful even though it wasn't me saying such an insensitive thing to someone. It's also why I'm sick of society and no longer wish to be a part of it anymore.

At school I've heard a few kids complaining about how short they are and their friend points me out and says "look she's shorter than you"
Imagine putting someone else down just to make another "feel better".
Also I hate how condescending people are. I've had people crouch down to talk to me like I'm 6 and I hope this doesn't happen soon
I'm a 4'7 teenager still waiting for another miracle growth spurt. (I grew a lot at age 11-12 but stopped growing after that)

Over 30 years ago, when I was in my early twenties, I remember hanging out with my friends at a festival in NYC. There happened to be a section where they had charged a fee to see a woman who had dwarfism. I didn’t believe someone was as small as they advertised and remember thinking I just had to see it for myself. When I finally got to the booth and looked down to see this very small woman who looked up at me I felt so ashamed that I participated in that. The way I felt immediately convicted me of that so-called “attraction”. It is wrong and shameful. I apologize for having participated in this in the past. Thanks for your documentary.

i have to agree, but it kinda seems like you didn't watch the video. it is 100% factual that people with dwarfism were sold as property for circuses, and until recently that was the only "work" we could realistically do. we *are* in fact killed and harmed and ostracized for simply existing in our bodies. you're right, comparing it to blackface is unnecessary. but please do not minimize the dehumanization we experience, every day.

Zimba please don't generalize all members of our society. Most men don't judge people on their height...We might "judge" people on their weight (just like doctors do as well ) which is a trait that says a lot about a person's habits, health and personality.. Liberals claim that obesity is the result of "hormonal problems" however if this was the case you would find obese people in all nations...but you aren't going to find obese people in poor nations such as North Korea , Romania or Somalia... you only find obese people in nations where people have money to buy fast food. Anyways, I don't think the average man judges people on their height... height just like race is a genetic trait, it makes no sense to judge a human being on these things.

His mother died when he was seven. His dad and two old maid aunts raised him. In those days, a child like that, who was also crippled was often put away... But our family educated him. They knew he would not be able to perform the type of manual labor available to most men in those days.

My boyfriend has dwarfism I can’t imagine someone hurting him or making him feel like he’s less than human, I love him so much and he is the light of my life, his short height is limiting and he can’t reach the top shelf he says one of the advantages of dating me is that I can reach the top shelf for him and I’m always happy to do that when ever I see him I help him put towels away or help him get a plate. He is 3’11 I’m 5’8, sometimes I forget that we aren’t the same height and I’ll joke around a bit to much and that’s something that I’ve had to learn because when I stand next to him I only see the person that I love not his height and his physical limitations. I love him so much though and I wouldn’t change him, he is sweet and kind and so caring and i do not think anyone has the right to hurt him because he puts so much light out in the world. He is so motivated and he is so capable and responsible and he pushes me to be my very best he always reminds me about things when I am forgetful and he motivates me to go to school and learn, he cheers me up when I’m depressed or when I’ve had a bad day. I love him so much and I would do anything to make him happy and I couldn’t stand someone dehumanizing him or making him feel that he is worth less then anyone else that is a normal height, we met in kindergarten and I was taken out of school at a young age for bullying, ten years later we met again and fell in love I can see myself marrying him and I could never see myself loving another like I love him he is my true love.

@@coolchannelize15 I know it will happen eventually, don’t give up hope just because of your height. Truly I believe love is based off more than just appearances, after all me and him met ten years later at a McDonald’s drive through what can be more romantic then that. The first thing I noticed was his smile and his amazing personality, that’s what truly matters and if you are confident and outgoing people will see that. Height shouldn’t matter in the end people may judge you based off of your appearance but you can get past that just keep being yourself and happiness is sure to follow, I think he had the same feelings as you one point that everyone would look at his height, but I can also tell he uses his height as an advantage and something fun, like when he worked at McDonald’s he would climb the shelves and play hide and seek with his managers he is really funny 😆.

I think a lot of the discrimination unfortunately comes from the way our brains are wired: we find little things with human features cute. Like children. The most major type of discrimination, I'd imagine, would be the kind who gawk or treat you like a child or want to pick you up like a toy. I think people can go a bit crazy when they see cute things, like the way my partner goes googly eyed for dogs or the way old ladies fawn over my 4 year old son, people really need to show a bit more restraint. If the person is happy to do a show or otherwise exploit what they are born with, that should also be fine. Just don't call people nasty names, there is no need for it, especially when height is not something you can change.
