I'd be fine with every other year since I'm in the market but all the videos out are two years old so I want videos on the current products. I'm still searching and wanting more info especially on greenworks 80v compared to 60v.
I own a green works 21" mower, snowblower, hedge trimmer, leaf blower and weed trimmer. All use the same batteries. I have had these for over three seasons. No gas, no flammable liquids, they immediately start and stop. I am a very satisfied customer and NO this is not a paid endorsement!
Ego mowers are absolutely fantastic. I bought the 21" self-propelled model a few weeks ago (Model LM2102SP). The 7.5 Ah battery almost outlasts me. Like Rob said, the best thing about battery-powered mowers is the ease of maintenance- no fuel, no oil, no filters, etc.
I have an Ego mower, as well. Not self-propelled. I've had it for about 3 years and I just love it. Great mower and you are spot on with the whole “no fuel, no oil, no filter” comment!
I don’t normally comment on videos but I just had to say this video was extremely well made and had a lot of great information. I can tell you put a lot of time and energy to make this video and do the tests
I was skeptical about them until I bought one, awesome! No more gas, no more spark plugs, no more oil, no more winterizing and no more worrying if the mower will start. I have a small yard (thank god) so the run time is not an issue for me
@Andrew_koala a little off topic but my mistake. I was specifically referring to Khonsu of ancient Egypt. I should have been more specific and I will correct this behavior going forward
Just received the greenworks pro 21" mower today and am breathing a sigh of relief to see that it performed so well in your testing!! As a small single lady in her 60's, I feel I made a great choice and can't wait to try it out. After I get my grandson to come and help with unboxing and assembly that is, lol.
@@SamFr1000 I like it. It works well. The only drawbacks for me are it's pretty heavy and hard to push and maneuver on my uneven yard since it isn't self propelled and the batteries run out before I'm done. Can't afford to buy more batteries. But, it still works better for me than a pull start!
i read/watched a lot of reviews last year when my 23 year old Black and Decker corded mower died. All of those reviews placed the 80 volt self propelled Kobalt as one of the highest rated of the mowers tested. I purchased it because of so many positive reviews and because of the 5 year warranty. I am very happy with it and it will even cut my yard when the grass is wet and overgrown which is something my previous corded mower would not do.
EGO is the real deal. I Love the mower, trimmer, and blower of theirs that I bought. Zero problems and outstanding performance and quality. They came with a 5 year warranty too. Getting ready to buy their Hedger next. I will never go back to gas power again. No more gas fumes, oil changes, spark plug changes, clogged carburetors, pulling cord to start, and lets not forget the way louder operation noise level either and the heavier weight of gas powered equipment. You say good bye to all of that when you buy EGO instead. Pop battery in and just press start. Start with their lawnmower first and you will be an instant believer of their products trust me !!!
I`m a huge Milwaukee fan when it comes to battery powered but the Ego destroyed them in leaf blowers, and it appears Milwaukee has zero representation in cordless mowers. I have 2 acres to mow and I have a J.Deere for most of it but I want a push mower for the delicate and smaller mowing areas, looks like EGO is the winner for me.
Guys? Girls too! My hubby can't do yard work anymore so because I am doing it now I decided to replace all the gas equipment with battery. EGO met my needs. I have the mower, weed eater, blower, chain saw, and the edger. This year I'll get the pole saw. Can't wait for development of a power washer. I hated the gas tools because of the noise and mess. I'm 68 years old and have arthritis. EGO tools are manageable....and I'm a girl! :)
I've been using the Kobalt 80v 'Non Self Propelled" mower for my commercial business for four years. I've had to change the bearings in the wheels twice, otherwise this machine has been amazing and met all my expectations. Highly recommended.
thank you for this video, I'm 60 yr old and my yard guy doesn't come regularly and so my grass is over my yorkies head, gonna have to suck it up and get a mower. I have a gas mower but don't have the strength to pull the string to start it and I just had both knees replaced. The area I need to mow is about 600 sq feet. This video was very useful to help me decide.
@@Sophia-zk3tw I am going with a greenworks self propelled 24(x2) battery operated only because we have something called a 'sale barn' in my county that sells everything for 50% off retail and they just happed to get this mower in that is normally $499 but they will sell it to me for $250. Had that not come available home depot had a Ryobi on sale for $349, that was the next choice. The ones not self propelled are cheaper and I've watched a ton of videos that say the plastic deck ones are much lighter so non-self propelled may have worked. For me I thought the extra $100 or so for self propelled would be worth it.
I've been using a Greenworks mower for six years, and it's been flawless. I also have their chainsaw and pole-saw which use the same batteries and have been great.
I'm not even a lawn guy or tool guy, but I can appreciate the methodical approach to testing different products and you exaplained everything in a way even i could understand. This video was outstanding! I clicked subscribe within the first minute. Great job!
i returned my ego select cut when i saw the greenworks 25 incher go on sale for 500 bucks with 2 4ah batteries and i love it,holds dual batteries which auto swap, for me its easier to use and has a wider cut, my favorite mower ever!
Owned an ego mower for about a year now and love it! Don't have to worry about mowing when the kids are napping :) I can even have a phone call on my airpods while mowing the lawn! Not to mention I never have to yank on a cable 10 times to get it started like it did growing up!
As a first time home buyer this is a big decision for me and your video is the ONLY one that wasn’t a robot voice reading over specs I can already see. Well done and thank you!
I run the EGO in my commercial mowing operation. It hangs out in the back of my pickup with the big gas stand on mowers hanging in the trailer. First electric push mower that equals the cut quality of the commercial gas mowers. It stays outside, getting rained on, no problems as it has a waterproof rating. Also run the trimmer, and backpack blower. I know a lot of guys using the Ego equipment commercially.
Really? You let it get rained on constantly like that? Every video on that mower talks about how crucial it is to not allow the mower to get wet by cleaning it with a water hose because getting water in the mortar will destroy. In the instruction booklet it basically says on every page multiple times to not allow the mortar to get wet! And to not clean the mower with a water hose or pressure washer hose like at a car wash. Given that the vents for the motor are on the sides at the top of the mower right below where the battery open and close protector lid shuts makes it seem like what you are saying is either untrue or they over exaggerate greatly about water getting in the vents into the motor which will cause significant damage to the motor!
Surprised to see kobalt 80v finish so low. I've been using mine for 2+ years now and in terms of storage - it collapses nicely and stores vertically in my shed with no issues. Still using original batteries (came with 2 2Amp batteries), and there is no noticeable decline in run time. Loved it so much, I bought the entire kobalt lineup except for the chainsaw :)
I bought an Ego LM2125SP the other day. I love everything about it. The convenience of not having to check/change/fill oil. Not having to store gas, add fuel stabilizer, and worry about bad gas by the end of the cutting season. It folds up compactly in my little 10x10 shed. Drop the battery in and start cutting. The self-propelled controls are nice and easy to use without having to really think about it. The quality of the cut is great (single blade model here) and I can cut my grass on my lot 3-4 times if needed on one charge of the 7.5AH battery. This is my first self propelled mower and I am sure the extra money spent will be well worth it once the Louisiana summer heat kicks in any day now. I love it so much, I am going back to Lowes this morning to pick up an Ego trimmer and blower. My mom and my sister each have a Kobalt push mower and neither have had any problems with them. They seem to be very capable machines.
I just bought Greenworks 17in 40V cordless, with trimmer and battery all for $350. My wife saw the thing and called it small. After a good days work, she was impressed with how well it worked and how good a job it did. I said, "it's not how big it is, but how you use it".
I have a Kobalt and have been very happy with it. Considering the magnitude of just how much less it costs than anything else and how similar performance levels were across the board between nearly everything evaluated I'm somewhat surprised it wasn't the budget pick. But my main takeaway was just that Electric mowers are awesome. I hope to never need a gas one again.
I purchased an ego lawnmower With great skepticism, I used to have commercial landscape maintenance Business and Once Thought that they would never be able to produce a quality battery power lawnmower. Now retired I turned to the battery operated ego to my amazement it worked great on my very big piece of property, with some challenging nice Inclines to be mowed. Thanks again for your very informative videos
I bought a 40-volt cobalt mower in 2014 and it works just as good as the day I bought. ZERO Maintenace. Hands down the most dependable mower I've ever had. It bounced out the back of my brother's truck going 55mph 4 years ago and only got scratches (it's so light it bounced like a ball). The only reason I'm looking for a new mower is because I want a bigger one. My electric mower makes almost no noise, has no gas fumes to stink up the garage, no oil changes, no maintenance. I'm so in love with electric lawn equipment, I'm going to get an electric riding mower and I will NEVER go back to gas lawn equipment!
Ehhh I’ve had an ego for 2 years and I’m about to go back to gas. It can’t handle my thick Bermuda lawn. I cut my Bermuda pretty high at 2.5 inches. If my Bermuda goes to 3 inches, it’ll die about 3-4 times on my 2500 sq ft lawn. It also doesn’t mulch effectively. You get clumps of grass buildup underneath the deck that bogs it down. Back to gas I go.
My 2 cents: bought a country property a year ago and the prior owners had the greenworks mower/small chainsaw/ and pole saw combo. They left all to me as they downsized on property. Appreciated it very much as I wanted to see how the battery packs held up. I'm a construction contractor so I have a slew of battery operated tools of all kinds. The combo was bought 2.5 years prior to me owning it. Once the season of mowing started I got the mower out and the mower wouldn't recognize the batteries were installed. I can build and fix just about anything. Inspecting underneath the mower and one of the blades were missing, further inspection the shaft the blade attaches to was extremely wobbling and looked like the bearings the shaft attaches to were broken. I have a 4 year old Honda gas mower that is a beast. There was an old yard machine with Briggs and Stratton engine in the shed on the property that had not been ran in years. So derelict it had an inch of dirt accumulated in the gas tank. After cleaning it out, changing oil, and spark plug, it fired right up no problem. The greeworks mower is so light it feels like my kids toy, positive thing if it worked. The chainsaw is barely faster than using an axe. Haven't used the pole saw yet. The durability and longevity of this system is subpar. If you're on a 1/4 acre lot and a tiny yard then it may last but in my experience, it's garbage. The push to get rid of combustion engines and manufacturers trying to put out ill engineered machines is just not there yet. My gas powered Honda mower is a Cadillac compared to the rinky dinky greenworks 90% plastic "toy."
You are a very good speaker. I love how thorough you are in this review. I can tell this took you a long time to produce and I really appreciate it. Just bought my first electric mower today. I got the Ego with the 7.5ah battery. Love it!
wow, this is a really impressive study. i have to imagine that each manufacturer is watching this and modifying based on your feedback, as it's still a growing product line. Great work
I have had my GreenWorks for 5 years now. I have a very large lawn to cut every week. So I brought other GreenWorks tools and I have a total of 5 batteries. These 5 batteries allow me to complete my mowing something I couldn’t finish with just the 2 batteries. I cut all type of gras and many different heights. My lawn looks professional every time. I can’t stand the smell of gas so this was a must for me. In five years it has been reliable, and the best investment I have made. I just changed the blades this year 2021.
Makes me happy that I bought an Ego a couple of years ago - I loved it, and then the bushfires came and turned it into ash. I recently bought a new one to use at my new property, and I just watched this out of interest. Seems I did good!
In May 2020 we bought the Greenworks 40V 20-Inch Cordless (2-In-1) Push Lawn Mower, Model 25302. LOVE IT. ...and the Greenworks 40V 14 inch String Trimmer, Model 2100202. I'm selling both and upgrading to the 25" 60v Greenworks mower, and 16" 60v string trimmer (arriving next week! ...with a 60v Greenworks backpack blower). LOVE Greenworks' product quality and aesthetic. I especially love storing the mower vertically against a wall and never carrying gasoline in our car or keeping it in our garage (after 50+ years of living with it).
I bought the Makita because it will last the longest and has amazing capabilities. Watched a ton of videos and came away with that conclusion! Bought one from Home Depot and couldn't be happier! It really is a BEAST like you mentioned! I cut a huge yard with 14" grass, and it did awesome! Went through 4 battery changes, but I think normal maintenance mowing it could be done with 2 battery changes. But with the 4 batteries it comes with, plus 2 I already had, I never had any downtime! The Makita is definitely made to last for MANY years and is an absolute joy to operate. Like you said toward the beginning, I was also amazed at how quiet it is!! With that much power? It seems impossible, but it's real!! I think they put more engineering into the Makita than the other mowers.
i liked it too but it has some principle problems starting with 18V design. Most other switched to 40V or higher due to the demand of more powerful tools but it is still stuck with this 18V (2 battery in series to get 36V is a bad usage, it will kill battery fast)
I just bought an Ego and did my first cut today, it felt like I was pushing around a fisher price toy it was so light! I think it would do well for the front wheels to be on swivels, make it easier to maneuver due to being so long.
I don't care if we're talking power tools, computers, firearms or what have you, A Concord Carpenter/ToolBoxBuzz sets the standard for reviews. I trust Rob and these guys far more than Consumer Reports which I've subscribed to since 2000. Great job as always guys!
I just bought a makita dux60 cordless with a trimmer attachment. I was skeptical for 6 months. I use a 4 stroke 30cc trimmer and love the power of that thing. Makita says the dux60 at full power is equal to my 30cc. Yeah right, maybe for 5 min. I kept seeing vids on my feed and started watching them. Well, my yard got over grown. I ordered it, ups took over a week to get here. The weeds were over 2 feet high and thick. The batteries take a while to charge. It came with two 5 ah batteries and I had two 4 ah for my drill that's about two years old. The power is just like using my 30cc. With the 2 sets. I'm able to go almost non stop. By far the best way to go. I will be ordering the lawnmower next. I wish you guys reviewed the makita lineup. I'm really impressed with their system.
I bought an EGO (not the tested model; their smaller one) last spring and I love it. The wife loves it, too. (She does most of our mowing due to my asthma...)
This was an EXCELLENT review. Wow. I grew up working with my dad doing landscaping and lawn maintenance. I have a small yard now and it was hard to not buy a gas mower on principle but your review has given me a lot of confidence in any of these mowers. And that's after watching a lot of other reviews from non-professionals who didn't have the perspective I needed. Impressive. Have a subscribe! For the record, I am going with a Greenworks 40V 20 inch Cordless Twin Force Lawn Mower 25302 since it's on sale today.
I don't understand how a mower which is the quietest, best built, long run time and "commercial design beast" with Makita's quality, OPE and tool options finished behind Black and Decker. It won more categories and finished 6th? Who cares that the handle doesn't fold. I prefer it doesn't and when I look at all the plastic parts on Ego and Greenworks, those WILL break. Plastic deck mowers are too light, steel deck mowers WILL rust. Makita offers an aluminum deck (DLM533Z, which is the mower that I have) and it will be around far longer than most if not all in the test. Same can be said about Makita's batteries and brushless motor. Also, there is a reason it doesn't have rubber on the handle, let's see how good the rubber overmold is on the Ego in three years. The other thing this review doesn't do is talk about batteries and chargers. I can mow non-stop using two batteries in the mower (5Ah) and by the time I deplete two, the other two on the charger are full. The last thing I will say is that the Makita is even MORE quiet in quiet mode. The Makita should have been number 1 or 2 in this review, certainly NOT 6.
Glad I found your Channel, you're one of the only channels that I have subscribed, got the notifications and sent this video to a friend! Because you guys are worth it great job.
I bought an 80v Kobalt three years ago after my Honda's gas tank literally exploded in my garage due to a trash fire. Mine is the previous generation, with 2 2.5 amp batteries. It's still going strong and I love it. Here in the Houston area we have St. Augustine lawns and my Kobalt has mowed down 12" high St. Augustine without stalling. My three previous Honda's would not do that.
One big consideration people should look at if they're not already buying based on existing battery platform, is the weight of the mower. In this comparison there's a 40ish pound spread among the models. I could see some people buying and thinking it'll fold up nice to hang on a garage/shed wall, then having to wrestle it like a 80lb bag of concrete.
I use my EGO Self-Propelled as a push mower a large percentage of the time. It's indistinguishable from a push mower and gains a ton of run time. I only use self propel up my steep sections, and to start and awkward turn around. There's no "need" to use the self propel all the time.
@@karkitty202 it’s great. Is it THE BEST? Dunno. The one thing I will say is that their battery design is superb. The charger has a fan that the pulls air through hundreds of holes in the battery to cool all the cells individually. The older batteries tended not to have a fuel gauge on them just a green or red light which is kind of a bummer, but most of the new ones have the gauge on them. I think the only thing about these battery powered mowers is they use fairly lightweight low lift blades, so don’t have as much vacuum to lift grass as a gas mower, that said you can get a high lift blade.
If anyone ever need the most comprehensive analysis on electronic lawnmowers this is it!! Super impressive review. I wasn't expecting it to be this good.
The timing of this review couldn't be better for me. As someone who has paid to have his lawn mowed for years I started noticing that battery power mowers have come along way and I am in the market for one. Thanks for the review and your website has a ton of information.
@@garybrewer1035 We live in Arizona, so we don't have a lot of grass, but just enough that it takes about 20 minutes to mow it. We moved here from Chicago with a gas mower, but 7 years ago we sold it and purchased a Ryobi 1+ cordless mower, and couldn't be happier. I'm not claiming it's the best on the market, because when we purchased it, there weren't a lot of choices for cordless mowers on the market, but it does a great job for what we use it for. It does take two batteries though. However, our Ryobi mower looks nothing like the one in this video.
Good job on the video. I purchased a GREEN Machine from HomeDepot. It came with tw0 62 volt batteries, it ran flawless, the battery lasted 45 min. each. I tried to get cutting blades for the mower. At the time Home Depot didn't carry the blades. The blades were unique and didn't work with anything else. The mower was a 22" and I liked it. I returned it to HOME DEPOT because I like to keep a couple of extra blades so I can always have a sharp blade.
Hey Joel, I saw your comment under a post knowing that you have a battery powered lawn mower, isn't it great? I’m doing a survey about using the electric outdoor powered equipment including the mower, but I’m not an electric mower owner. Could I exchange some opinions with you so that I might get some in-person experience? I’d like to pay 100 dollars for a conversation with you, appreciated!
*** CORRECTION ** EGO tied for the best mower with the 21" Greenworks mower. Third place went to the 25" Greenworks and Black and Decker coming in 6-points behind the top two mowers. A subscriber pointed out an error in one of the calculated values. When we recalculated the battery voltage the Greenworks did better on an Sq ft/ watt hr basis. That’s why it moved up to a tie.
Great effort overall on the head-to-head! Respectfully, however, I think there are some significant errors with the Greenworks 21" evaluation. Especially your "best value" recommendation for the GW21. "Best value" was stated as being based on a $350 price tag with a 4 AH battery. Price is incorrect and the rankings were based on 9AH worth of batteries. First, the price quoted for the Greenworks 21" is incorrect. It was quoted at $350 with a 4AH battery verbally (21:45), but the screen shot clearly says $450 (accurate). From the website (at time of publication), this year's model is not available for less than $380 in the Tool Only version. Still not a bad value relatively, but it's definitely not the "2nd lease expensive". For only $50 more, the 25" is available with 6AH worth of batteries (4+2), however this may only be a temporary holiday sale price (7/7/2020). A strong case could be made for the Black and Decker at it's price point. On top of that, Greenworks does NOT offer a 5.0+4.0 battery package with this year's 21" model, which was what was used for the Watt Hours calculation (10:30). GW21 was given 3rd place in that category based on batteries that are not included with the mower (12:35). And it is certainly not available with those batteries at either of the prices quoted verbally or on-screen.
The best cordless lawn mower comparison video out there. Not only did you cover a lot of categories but you included a wide array of manufacturers. A lot of comparisons would not have included products from Hart or B&D as the perception of those manufacturers is not as high as others like DeWalt and Makita. The average consumer of these products is driven by price. At the same time, they want to know if they're getting their money's worth. A video like this does them a great service by providing them with enough data to make an informed decision. Personally, I just purchased the Greenworks 40v 21" mower. It arrives in a few days so I haven't used it yet. When this video popped up on my feed, I had to watch. While the model I chose was not reviewed in this test, I am confident that I made a good choice with a Greenworks product. I can't wait to take for a spin. Thank you for all you do, Rob. There are only a handful of channels that to well rounded reviews and this is one of the best. And hey, my name is Rob, too, so there has to be something to that, right?
@@JH-mt3pp its a primarily hunting property mixed with a few acres of woods and wetlands. the mowable parts are able to be done with a push mower pretty easily. Also; i like the channel.
If I buy the Ego .. What price are we talking about ? Does it come with the recharge station and how long does it take ? Although I'll need frequent breaks I just need to know if it will last long enough to finish the job? Do they rec . sshutting it off , or allowing it to" lay low " while I sit a bit on my walker to rest my legs ? Just wondering, I do need to know . Thank you for such a great video comparison. Women need to know our options other than paying out our s.s.d.i. to others . This isn't what I planned for retirement .
Love my Ryobi 40v just bought it, its quiet, and good battery power. I ran out of grass to cut so kept cutting until the batter died. The deck height lever is positioned well. Has on board battery storage for swapping out.. Love that it mulches or bags. Love that there isnt a side discharge, eliminated dangerous eye debris and dust/dirt. Much more quiet than a gas mower
I had the twin blade EGO mower for several weeks, then I got to use an older Honda Mower and was amazed how the cut quality was WAY better than the new EGO. Also I had a lot of trouble mulching leaves and lawn debris with the EGO. So I returned the EGO and bought a new Honda.
Despite what their marketing claims, battery mowers have nowhere near the same power as gas mowers. They are about 2.5 HP tops, or half of an entry level gas mower. They make up for this a bit with torque and by using smaller blades, but you still need HP to do work.
I was totally sold on the EGO & the Greenworks. The most important factor that changed my decision for me was which tools I already owned. Since 2010 my Dad started a collection of DeWalt power tools. Consequently, after moving out I chose DeWalt tools myself because that's pretty much all I'd used. Therefore, I'll be getting the DeWalt mower as I've got so many batteries to swap from which = infinite running time. Easily could've been any other brand. This is very important to consider for anyone looking at these machines.
We got the Ryobi 16 in. 18 volt mower that uses a pair of 1+ 18V batteries, so battery replacement isn't an issue, and blades are readily available. So far, it's a fantastic mower.
Spent a lot of time researching and bought the twin blade EGO self-propelled. What a beast. Best looking lawn I've ever had and mowed my yard, the 100' X 50' city walkway next to my house, and my neighbor's very long, dense and wet lawn, all on one charge with about 10-15% left. I couldn't be happier. Replacement batteries aren't cheap, but worth it to me to get rid of noisy, polluting gas mower. I expect the battery to last longer than five years at any rate based on other cordless devices I've used.
Great review. I have ab ego trimmer and it's a beast. I have the 2ah battery and it does my whole fenced in half acre on one charge. Much better then gas. I did have a battery issue at two and a half years. They shipped me a new battery after only a 10 minute call. That was great customer service.
Just bought the Ryobi 40V/6Ah battery mower yesterday. Besides getting used to having to release the self-propelled handle to turn the other big issue is that it's so light it literally pops wheelies while I'm mowing and I have to go back over that spot because it didn't cut it down low enough while the front wheels were lifted. I have a medium size yard and was able to cut the whole yard with one charge. I have St. Agustine grass but it's really dry and I had the mower up 2nd lowest height level and it went through it with no problems. I'm not sure how it would do if the grass was slightly wet as it normally is in the spring. It does also leave a few blades uncut here and there. I think I'll stick with it though. Much better than dealing with the odor of gasoline.
To match Ryobi's 75 Ah mower, Ego would have to have 10 of their 7.5 Ah batteries on it. I don't know how realistic that is. To be clear, I want one. If they keep it under 5K I'll be bringing one home.
Hardly a game changer to have an expensive (overpriced for what it can do), short runtime, more flimsy (to keep weight down) mower unless you have such a small lot that you don't need a riding mower at all... unless the game is called Losing Common Sense.
There is one huge advantage of electric mowers I have never heard mentioned, if you hit a large rock or tree root with any electric mower it simply stops running, you restart and keep mowing. I have a yard that is basically rock with grass growing on it. I have hit rock repeatly over the last 5 years with no damage to the mower or blade. I live in Hawaii so the grass grows year round. When I used gas mowers I was constantly replacing blades, the part that attaches the blade to the shaft, and having to pull off the pull start assembly to replace the shear pin. I absolutely love my electric mower, for 5 years I have beat the he'll out of it and it just keeps running.
I have a Ryobi and love it, my friend got a EGO his is always being fixed and my Ryobi just keeps going. Costs way less too, I am very happy with my cordless, whichever one you get if you are not beating the hell out of it, I think you will be happy.
Same, have had it for this mowing season, just sharpened the blades and made a run yesterday. I like that you can turn the self propelled off if you want. I'm amazed at how well it bags.
I just bought an electric mower two days ago and now this video pops up in my recommendeds. I'm glad the EGO was #1 in this review since I bought an EGO based on some reviews on a forum I read. Makes me feel better about the extra money I spent.
Beginning of this year Lowes had the Kobalt on sale. Add another 10% off with veterans discount I paid $250 out the door for the 40v push mower. I chose the push mower because of the weight, even with a steel deck it weighs nothing compared to a gas mower and I walk faster than the maximum speed on the self propelled. I have a medium sized yard and the large 5 mili amp hour battery only uses about 50% to mow front and back. I bought the weed eater off Amazon minus a battery and am able to mow and weed eat on one battery charge. I think you should have pointed out the mowers with plastic decks and dinged those some points, plastic gets brittle over time and I don't see any of those being around a long time. I also like that the kobalt senses the thickness of what you are mowing and auto adjusts the speed of the blade to match your cutting conditions. I think that is something else that should have been pointed out.
I also purchased the Kobalt with my veterans discount. I love it. I can double cut my front and back yard and still have enough charge for the next mow. I have the self propelled, but don’t use it to save the battery. I’m very happy with the Kobalt.
I have a 12 year old Black & Decker cordless mower with a plastic deck and it is still going strong - no issues with cracks at all. The plastic deck is not a negative.
I got the new EGO and love it. One thing I was surprised to see in this test was the run time. After 60 minutes of mowing my yard, my battery still is at 75%
I can do 2 yards for a total of 50 minutes approximately, and still have over 50% left on my 7.5 AH battery. When I remove the battery from the mower, I do not charge it. I will charge the battery the day I mow while edging. When I’m done edging the yard. This helps to deter battery degradation. I like my ego so much I look forward to mowing! I also have the 530 CFM blower👍
Thanks for leaving a comment, this report was done two years ago we are currently working on a new one this may hope to be able to published by the end of May
Love my self propelled EGO mower , I believe it’s the only battery where you can charge it up straight after removing it from the mower. The battery will also self discharge down to storage charge if you haven’t used it for a while which means the battery will last longer. Mine is now 4 years old and is still perfect. Subbed and liked 😎👍
Bought the 21 inch Greenworks self propelled for half price in October (paid $249)and it's a GREAT mower. Easy to adjust handle height and speed so my wife is finally starting to mow the lawn. Only issue is sometimes it powers down and gives you the low battery signal - and if you let it cool down it starts up again. Cuts beautifully too.
What a good video! It is absolutely necessary to listen to this video BEFORE buying a mower. I would add that Tool Box Buzz is with Project Farm a must BEFORE any purchase of tools or work accessories. For my part, the motorized function of the propulsion is really not necessary and will automatically give greater autonomy to the mower. Also, it is really no longer necessary to have a gas mower for a good mowing. Greenworks will make significant profits in future years with the price of gas skyrocketing, although that is not such a big factor. I would say the noise is more... Well done Tool Box Buzz!!!
I have researched for weeks now and have decided on the Greenworks 21’ mower, your test confirms my decision, very well done!! Thanks for the in depth study and demonstration!!
I’ve had a Kobalt 80v mower from 3 yrs and love it. So simple and easy. The I’ll never go back to gas. My only gripe is I wish my mower had the two battery parallel thing like some of the newer units. My single pack mower lasts ~30 minutes and then I swap out battery packs. Parallel batteries would give me an hour.
I've got the Stihl, and it works just fine for me (lawn takes 3hrs to cut). But for anyone jumping in right now I'd steer them to the Ego or Greenworks based on this and other things I've seen.
...how big is your yard? xx feet by yy feet? The local stihl dealer was quick to tell me EGO was rated #5 by consumer reports and that the stihl line was better. Is he wrong or is his 'bashing' EGO justified?
@@K03sport My lawn is probably about 35000sq feet. I know a couple people who have EGO mowers and based on what they've said and using my Stihl to cut close to equivalent yards it sounds like the EGO has a bit more run time and available power. I'll probably buy a 300 S battery as I'm slowed down a bit because I have a 300 and a 180 at the moment. I bought the 180 when I bought a trimmer, so it doesn't last long in the mower. I just bought a $10 month subscription to CR and looked at the push/self propelled mower ratings, EGO is ranked 3rd and 1st respectively, higher than the Stihl though CR called the Stihl reliable but basic.
I got rid of my EGO Select Cut two years ago. It left uncut blades all over the yard. I tried the bagging blade and the mulching blade. No improvement. The grass bag removal was awkward with the center cross bar on the handle. You have to tilt the handle forward. The Toro handle doesn't have to be moved and the grass bag can be removed and installed with ease. The EGO is a pain to lower the handle then tilt it down. The Toro handle lowers with a lever on each side. The Toro tilts up and stores for space saving. The Personal Pace system is great as the mower will move at your walking pace by leaning on the handle. It is effortless! I tend to push it manually for exercise, but the mower is so light that even in manual mode, the mower is effortless. I sometimes use the Personal Pace when I turn the mower around to get it started, then I use manual mode. How lazy are we getting that we have to rely on self propelled all the time? I am age 66 and I don't mind a bit of exercise. Now, if someone has mobility issues, the Personal Pace is great. But for most of us, it is not necessary. Sometimes I use the Personal Pace just to break up the monotony of cutting the lawn. If we had an incline, I would use the Personal Pace more often. I prefer separate wheel height adjustments. We have a garden which is about 4 inches lower than the lawn. With separate wheel adjustments on the Toro, I can lower the left or right side of the mower and mow along the garden. With the one lever height adjustment, you have to mow parallel or perpendicular to the garden. Any miscalculation and the wheels goes off the edge and chop the lawn. The lights on the EGO or any lawnmower are a gimmick as I never cut the lawn in the dark. That would be a safety issue as well. I sold the EGO before people figured out how bad these lawnmowers are. I believe that the mower was too light with the plastic shroud, and the dual blades were thin and flexed when cutting the grass. I bought the Toro Personal Pace with steel deck 6 amp battery mower and it is night and day better than the EGO. I always have over half a charge after each cut. I am getting rid of my EGO products this week and going with Makita lawn tools. I am tempted to buy the top of the line Makita, but the handle does not fold down and I have limited storage space, so I will keep my Toro lawnmower. It is great! The 2.5 amp battery for the EGO blower and weedeater does not complete my 4900 sq ft yard. If I use the 5 or 7.5 amp batteries they are much heavier. EGO batteries are very pricey as well. I have the EGO power bank and I am getting rid of that. I prefer my Yamaha 2000i gas generators. I got rid of my EGO snowblower. Poor snow cleaning and the batteries don't last. I replaced it with the Toro 8/24 gas snowblower with Personal Pace. It is lightweight, super easy on gas, has electric start, and never gets clogged. I am really happy with it. The Makita lawnmower is a masterpiece of a lawnmower and it is made to last. I like toys and I am tempted to purchase the Makita. But it is more of a want than a need as my Toro does everything well.
Lowes is discontinuing the Kobalt line and the 40v self propelled that is usually $385 is now $185. I just bought one today and cut the lawn, I love it.
Really impressed by this in-depth review…beats the crap out of most vague/voice over videos. Great work! Well, my decision has finally been made up…I’m going for the EGO 21”. Tough one, as Greenworks (both) are superb mowers. 👌
I purchased the then top-of-the-line Ryobi self propelled 40v mower 2 years ago this month. It mowed my 1/4 acre yard every week, doing so in a single charge of its 6 amp/hr battery. I found 3 faults with it. 1). I wish it spun slightly faster to aid in picking up misc debris. It picks up all the trimmings just fine. 2) It’s light in front which can cause uneven cutting if you are careless. 3). The blade dulls easily. Other brand replacement blades are about 1/4” too long. I have carefully ground one blade to workable length carefully maintaining balance. The replacement blade is slightly heavier but performance hasn’t seemed to suffer. I hope there’s no extra long term wear and tear. Ryobi’s replacement blades are unreasonably expensive and made of too soft metal. Those issues assume it been excellent. Height adjustment is a breeze. Controls are comfortable and safety minded. I buy again and recommend it for budget shoppers.
This is the only lawnmower comparison video i have seen that isn't just a robot voice over stock photos of mowers and lawns.

lots of work - we shoot for every few years
I’m sure he wants the guys to come test them weekly.
Do you have the 21 or 25 inch mower?
Ego mowers are absolutely fantastic. I bought the 21" self-propelled model a few weeks ago (Model LM2102SP). The 7.5 Ah battery almost outlasts me. Like Rob said, the best thing about battery-powered mowers is the ease of maintenance- no fuel, no oil, no filters, etc.
@@1DrBar is that the extent of your research?
I have an Ego mower, as well. Not self-propelled. I've had it for about 3 years and I just love it. Great mower and you are spot on with the whole “no fuel, no oil, no filter” comment!
Yep EGO 21 my first and a good one do the same job as gas one on one charge🤩 so far nothing bad about it for few years
@@barrynofzinger9266 I had a Honda Gas mower that I been using for last 22 years with no oil change/add or filter! Gas yes!
I don’t normally comment on videos but I just had to say this video was extremely well made and had a lot of great information. I can tell you put a lot of time and energy to make this video and do the tests
Habaniro by KIA is my next "all," electric vehicle!!
Too much of him and not enough of mower testing.
How many comments have you made in the past 2 years?
How are you finding it, six months later, Rosie?
@@SamFr1000 I like it. It works well. The only drawbacks for me are it's pretty heavy and hard to push and maneuver on my uneven yard since it isn't self propelled and the batteries run out before I'm done. Can't afford to buy more batteries. But, it still works better for me than a pull start!

This guy is really passionate when talking about mowers.
This is perhaps the finest presentation I have reviewed on UA-cam, bar none. You were factual, succinct, and honest. Thank you!
Thank you, we just finished our 2022 version of this and it should be published within two or three weeks
i read/watched a lot of reviews last year when my 23 year old Black and Decker corded mower died.
Really? I think I might buy that lawn mower today. Thank you
That's what I'm leaning to. And plus they specialize in this. Eat, breathe, and drink outdoor equipment. They even have a zero turn riding mower
Say the mower or other item needed repair who works on them?
@@livenfree I do all my own repairs and maintenance on all my equipment.
Guys?
I have the pole saw and it works great!
This video was very useful to help me decide.
what did you decide ? i am a 65 petite women with only a small front yard that i will have to mow and don't want to spent too much ?
@@Sophia-zk3tw I am going with a greenworks self propelled 24(x2) battery operated only because we have something called a 'sale barn' in my county that sells everything for 50% off retail and they just happed to get this mower in that is normally $499 but they will sell it to me for $250. Had that not come available home depot had a Ryobi on sale for $349, that was the next choice. The ones not self propelled are cheaper and I've watched a ton of videos that say the plastic deck ones are much lighter so non-self propelled may have worked. For me I thought the extra $100 or so for self propelled would be worth it.
Ego is VERY expensive. My Ryobi is great. Had mine for three years, no issues. I’ll continue to buy the great RYOBI.
Im looking at the Ryobi how does it do when bagging vs mulching?
Get what you pay for I guess
I am on year 4 with my Ryobi 40v 20 inch. No issues.
Great job!
Same here
i returned my ego select cut when i saw the greenworks 25 incher go on sale for 500 bucks with 2 4ah batteries and i love it,holds dual batteries which auto swap, for me its easier to use and has a wider cut, my favorite mower ever!
the kit usually comes with a 4ah and a 2ah but mine had 2, 4ah batts in it, happy accident!
Thank you that says it all.
do you keep swapping batteries? How do you charge the batteries while running around town to the various jobs?
That's crazy. You must have like 100 batteries. lmfao
@@HiddenAgendas just 4. Two 7.5s, a 5.0 and a 2.5.
I bought a Cobalt 80v in 2018. Still works great and haven't noticed any loss in power going into season five. I highly recommend it!!
I'm still pushing my Kobalt 80VDC after 5 years and cuts like a beast... longevity is great in my book.
And that 5 year warranty
Same for me, love it. Curious about the newer model and features. But can't convert until this one dies . And I don't see that happening.
Bought my 80v a year ago almost. Mows like a dream. Bought the 80v trimmer, blower and hedger too. All work great.
We have a Kobalt 80v as well. Thing is a beast!
Side note - can totally mow the whole yard steering it with one hand ;)
You won’t. Combustion motors are vanishing from the market in all verticals.
Greenworks makes mower for other OEMs and I'm pretty sure the Kobalt in this vid is one of em.
Thanks again for your very informative videos
my 2 year old EGO is a beast even on St. Augustine here in Texas. Make the switch, worth it.
I just recently switched to green works equipment from gas powered won’t go back.
Love my EGO. Three years strong and no battery degradation.
Groveside
Love it!
I’ve had a 21’ Greenworks for 5 years and never had a problem with it. It is by far the best one out there!
wow, this is a really impressive study. i have to imagine that each manufacturer is watching this and modifying based on your feedback, as it's still a growing product line. Great work
I have had my GreenWorks for 5 years now.
I really liked this comparison. I just past my first year of the 80 volt Cobalt and I really love it after 43 years of Lawnboy mowers.
Oh and I bought the chainsaw too.
I just bought an Ego and did my first cut today, it felt like I was pushing around a fisher price toy it was so light! I think it would do well for the front wheels to be on swivels, make it easier to maneuver due to being so long.
That's true of all of them.
I don't care if we're talking power tools, computers, firearms or what have you, A Concord Carpenter/ToolBoxBuzz sets the standard for reviews. I trust Rob and these guys far more than Consumer Reports which I've subscribed to since 2000. Great job as always guys!

In reality, this dude just wanted his huge yard mowed...
Genius actually, plus we didnt have to do any of the work. Plus saw what did what. Super mega genius indeed.
Lmao
300 IQ move.
And got free mowers for the test according to the beginning. They reached out and manufacturers sent out mowers.
haha
Makita guy here & was hoping it would have fared better. I guess being right in the middle isn't so bad but that $850 tag is steeeeeeeeep!
Glad I found your Channel, you're one of the only channels that I have subscribed,

I bought an Ego mower last year and I love it. It's great for mowing early in the morning on weekends.
I own the 80 v Kobalt mower and it's a beast that can't be bogged down and runs forever.
I use my EGO Self-Propelled as a push mower a large percentage of the time. It's indistinguishable from a push mower and gains a ton of run time. I only use self propel up my steep sections, and to start and awkward turn around. There's no "need" to use the self propel all the time.
Is the ego worth it? It’s looking like the best one IMO.
Is it worth it to get the self propelled version?
If anyone ever need the most comprehensive analysis on electronic lawnmowers this is it!! Super impressive review. I wasn't expecting it to be this good.
My husband loves our eGO. We got an extra battery with it too.
The timing of this review couldn't be better for me. As someone who has paid to have his lawn mowed for years I started noticing that battery power mowers have come along way and I am in the market for one. Thanks for the review and your website has a ton of information.
EGO is the way to go....in my opinion..I have one and it's really nice and holds up
Your guys head to head comparison videos are insanely detailed. Thanks for all of the effort you put into them!
And now I know that Ryobi was not the best buy.
*** CORRECTION **
EGO tied for the best mower with the 21" Greenworks mower.
K. M. Looks like I said 339 instead of 449. The GW 21 is the. Best value in this group, regardless of batteries
I'll host my 6.5 acre property for ya'll to hold mower and weed eater competitions every 2 weeks this summer for you! Haha
Same here. Fml with mowing 5 acres let alone 6.5
@@sarahsnell8628 luckily i got roughly 2 of it as woods so we not far off each other lol
If you have 6.5 acres to mow why are you watching a push mower review ?
Do you still like your purchase? And if you had to give a ball park figure for your lawn, what would that be?
This channel is a god send. Every tool I ever bought was from toolboxbuzz reviews and everything is 110%.
I bought a new Honda mower because the EGO snow blower I bought last year was way under powered and I thought the lawn mower would be the same.
Buy my Ego self-propelled last year, never come back to gas, used last week, still loved
I went with the EGO without the comparisons, WHEW im glad that I lucked out.
hope you don't need customer support (you probably will)... laughable
@@Pizzanerd94 WTF the is Laughable about it? It works the way I expected it to, I already own the other products so I knew what I was getting into.
How about now...2 years later?
@@GoaWay... Still a great machine, no issues.
@@luvr381 okay, thank you. 😊
I have a Ryobi self propelled 6Ah i just bought and i love it . Surprised Ryobi was added to your testing.
Bought my ego over 2 years ago after fighting with gas mower issues. Best move i have made. No complaints.
Great review. I have ab ego trimmer and it's a beast. I have the 2ah battery and it does my whole fenced in half acre on one charge. Much better then gas. I did have a battery issue at two and a half years. They shipped me a new battery after only a 10 minute call. That was great customer service.
My Honda gas mower just died after only 18 months. They are TPOS. I'm done with gas mowers forever. Awesome review.
I decided on the EGO and it’s absolutely incredible! I used a Lawnboy Silver Series 6.5 HP 2 stroke engine for 21 years. The EGO outperforms it! ✌🏻👍🏻
If the zero turn that Ego is coming out with uses their existing battery platform it will be a game changer.
hunter1701d drove one today. Deck is a little light but runs well
@@jeffshort6766 what is the width of the cutting deck? Thx
To match Ryobi's 75 Ah mower, Ego would have to have 10 of their 7.5 Ah batteries on it. I don't know how realistic that is.
To be clear, I want one. If they keep it under 5K I'll be bringing one home.
@@BhutJolokias not necessarily, Ryobi doesn't use lithium on their ride ons. The power curve if lithium exceeds the batteries in the Ryobi.
My Ryobi has almost completely fallen apart in one year of normal use.
@@TheCreamRisesToTheTop I'm sure it did, completly

I just picked up the EGO Select Cut self propelled and I just love it. .. 1 handed pick up...light enough to push if desired. ..it's awesome
Same, have had it for this mowing season, just sharpened the blades and made a run yesterday. I like that you can turn the self propelled off if you want. I'm amazed at how well it bags.
Got one too. Great mower
We love ours too! We got a free extra battery
cemetree how did you get the free battery
LetET2010 it was part of a promotion from Home Depot.
I've had the same gas mower for the last 10 years and never changed the oil. Plug or any maintenance besides sharpening the blade. And works like new.
I’m totally EGO all the way! It’s one of the best investments I’ve made. I have all the different power heads
I just got a 40v ryobi mower and it also has an auto speed they adjust to thickness/height of grass
We also use the Kobalt mower . I love that thing to death. Incredibly easy to use.
I have a 12 year old Black & Decker cordless mower with a plastic deck and it is still going strong - no issues with cracks at all. The plastic deck is not a negative.
I got the 80V Kobalt self propelled this year. I love that thing. Who new I could actually like mowing the lawn.
I have the Ego 56v self propelled. In 2nd season and still going strong. I love this mower never had a problem with it
I got the new EGO and love it. One thing I was surprised to see in this test was the run time. After 60 minutes of mowing my yard, my battery still is at 75%
My Ego is less than 2 years old and I have to change out batteries after 20-25 minutes. Mowing about 8000 sq ft and takes 4 batteries to complete
Hours of Googling and research summarized into a 25 minute video. Liked, subscribed. Thanks for putting all of this together!

Good one, thanks. Now I need a lawn to mowe. And a house. And a Mower.
I have researched for weeks now and have decided on the Greenworks 21’ mower, your test confirms my decision, very well done!! Thanks for the in depth study and demonstration!!
Good choice!
You and the crew killed it, as always Rob! Thank you
I’ve had a Kobalt 80v mower from 3 yrs and love it.
Thx for feedback
Really surprised at the amount of dislikes on this video, it's one of the best mower comparison videos out there.
Probably people hating on electric mowers
Lowes is discontinuing the Kobalt line and the 40v self propelled that is usually $385 is now $185. I just bought one today and cut the lawn, I love it.
Been eyeballing Makita. Hmmm. Thanks for all the test results 👍☺️
I just bought the Greenworks Pro 80V 21-Inch Push Lawn Mower thanks to your video
