So whadda ya think? Did the SV20 hold it's own? WHat's your favorite low wattage amp?
Hi.TheGuitarNerdShow
Congratulations on the channel!
I would like to ask you a question if possible.
in your opinion and have you been able to try it.
Which speaker would go best with a 1x12" screen for the Marshall STUDIO VINTAGE SV20h head, what is the ideal combination and would it make the best match?
With :
1° Celestion G12M 65 Creamback 1×12"
2° Celestion Vintage30 1x12"
3° Celestion V type 1x12"
4° Celestion Greenback 1x12"
5° Celestion Classic Lead 80 1x12"
With what Ohms would be the ideal or best for the speaker with the Marshall SV20h head?
With :
1st Speaker 8 Ohms
2nd Speaker 16 Ohms
Thank you very much in advance for the information (if it is possible for you to give me your opinion) and sorry for being so bold with the query, I hope I don't bother you.
Thank you very much!!Greetings!
@TheGuitarNerdShow
can you show a vid jamming with a band?
You hit the nail on the head. Just lost a bit of the low end, but in a full band / track situation, that would most likely be mixed out to make room for the bass guitar.
These lower watt amps definitely make sense for recording.
They really do. And sitting here in my studio, they sound ridiculously great!
Thanks for watching!
Congratulations on the video, as it breaks the myth that 1/5 of the power does not mean 1/5 of the volume. I think companies took a long time to make these 20w heads! In 2009 I bought my first tube amp and I simply couldn't use it at my gigs because of the very high volume. To avoid making the same mistake, the second was 50w (LOL). It was more usable, but still very loud.
I finally found myself when I entered the world of 20W! I love the studio series!
I was completely shocked, when I first plugged into these amps, at how much volume they do have. And the tones!
I used a 22 watt Deluxe Reverb for a few years so I did know how loud those 22 watts could be, but I didn't expect this!
Thanks for watching!
VM > SV20 > Jubilee > JVM. All of them sound really good. You can really dial in an amp. Great playing and recording!
I agree, nice playing and all the amps sounded great.
Thank you! I’m definitely a tone junkie!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks John! And thank you for watching!
I agree. The JVM sounds scooped, sounds full alone, but at high risk to lose its place in the mix. The VM and SV20 sound like they know where they sit, and will cut and shine in the mix without sounding thin.
Just gotta love those marshall sounds , love my jvm 410 but my god it's so heavy , the sv20 certainly held it's own and may well be a possible alternative for smaller space gigs paired with a 2x12
Thank you for watching. I’d seriously consider the SV20. It’s a tiny little monster!
The Vintage Modern (and no, I don’t own one) seems to be Marhsall’s sweet spot amp. I’m surprised their prices aren’t going through the roof. People are always wondering why Marshall, doesn’t respond to the boutique modded Marshall market with a modded model of their own, and yet they had the VM and discontinued it. New ownership, bring it back!!
I have a Vintage Modern and plan to make some videos with it soon so stay tuned!
I love the Vintage Modern. So underrated!
Thank you for watching!
All sounded good!
I have the George Lynch Celestion speakers in my Randall 4x12 cab. They sound as good as your EVH Celestion ones!
I’ve used Lynchback IR’s and really dug them!
Thanks for watching!
I love my SV20, it lacks a litttle bit of low end but if you push it with an OD and quad track it in a mix it sounds KILLER!!
I concur! Amazing little booger of an amp!
Thank you for watching!
In some ways I liked the sv20 the best. Kind of a snarl in the midrange. The others, in general, kind of sounded like more low end oomph. Maybe more noticeable in the room, but for a recorded sounded, nothing at all wrong with the sv20. That's my 2 cents listening here. Nice job again!
Thank you so much!
I find the SV 20 has more midrange grunt in the room as well
I have a Fryette Power Station hooked up to mine. No problem keeping up and it can run at bed room volumes and it sounds just like their it does with nothing hooked up. My setup
on my studio was just like yours except my bass was on 7. Channels jumpered also. I also have the Boss EQ most used pedal I have. Will be trying my little boost pedal. Good vid. Was spot on. Studio sounds great but there is the head room issue. That's why I have the Fryette and it sounds great on all my other amps. I bought it for my 2204 to be able to play in my studio. Was happy to find out it works all all my other heads. CW
I’m dying to get my hands on a PS-1! Hopefully before too long I’ll be able to manage it!
Thank you for watching!
that Fryette power station is the ticket .....best way to unlock any amps full potential
thank you so much. I have a SC20h and I love it, but compared to the 50w amp I head before, it lacks some authority. Plenty of volume, great in a mix, but just a lil somethin. This is the first review/comparison where I can hear exactly what I've been missing.
Thank you for watching. I've been really impressed with both the SC20H and the SV20H. Such great tone!
The Vintage Modern was such a great amp. Had one, sold it off years ago. Instant regret. I think it was Marshall’s last great amp until they came out with the studio series.
It sure is - I wasn't sure that I'd love it but took a chance and sure am glad I did!
Thanks for watching!
Nice vid, thanks! I have the SV20H and SC20H mini Plexi and mini JCM 800, and they’re awesome. I use the mini Plexi with its matching vertical 2x12 for gigging, and it’s perfect. I’m on 5 watts at practice and 20 watts for gigs. Has all that classic Plexi goodness in a convenient “right-powered” package.
Thank you for watching! I’ve got the lil JCM800 as well - it’s a monster!
Vintage Modern all the way for me with the Jubilee a close second .
I love my VM! Thanks for watching!
Never liked the VM. Tried it many times.🤔
Marshall nailed it with their Studio series, especially the SV20. Need to crack it, as you said to get the tone.
Yes, big time. But they sound SOOOOOO good!
Great Comparison! I like it all but sv20 and jubilee are my favs. I didn't realise the vintage modern sounded this great! Might have to look for one myself. Thanks!
The Vintage Modern is a real sleeper for sure. It sounds killer especially for that old school crunch!
Agreed, great amp.
All sound killer and the sv definitely held its own. In a way it sounds a bit brighter and not as dark which would be great in a mix. Excellent recording amp.
It sounds amazing!!!!! Thanks for watching!
Awesome review… any videos that cite Warren Haynes gets me 100%! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Warren’s the man!
Thanks for watching!
Would you say this amp has enough clean volume for a local pub live gig? I ask because it seems like with the cranking up is more than enough. Tks
This video is really is a cut above many, many demo/review videos…keep killing Steve!!!! #plexination
Thank you! That is really kind of you to say! Hopefully more people will continue to catch on to my videos!!!
Would love to hear that 20 watt trough the fx loop of a 100 watt Marshall.
Ya know - I've thought about doing just that - just haven't figured out a way to keep a load on the SV's speaker outs so I don't blow the OT. I bet it sounds killer though.
Thank you for watching.
People.....a vintage/modern has KT-66 power tubes ( a 6L6 type, 5881 ).
The EVH speakers are 20 watts . They are just the Celestion Heritage G12M 20 Greenback with an EVH label .
I thought so too but on the label they say 30 watts. So, who knows.
Thanks for watching!
Celestion must be labelling the newer GB’s as EVH. The Heritage GB’s are 20W and no longer made.
How are your switches set inside the EP?
I don't remember specifically but I think I set them so it's the most flat if what makes sense?
Thank you for watching.
Vintage Modern really stuck out to ears, but my experience has been that I can dial in just about any quality tube amp, including the 18/20 watt wonders to something I like and can use. Sometimes I have to find a different speaker for better compliment.
I agree - speakers make such a huge difference! That's why I keep four 4x12's with different speaker types mic'd up - if I can' t get a sound that works for a mix through one of them then I'm doing something wrong LOL!!!
Thanks for watching!
The VM sounds like a boosted SV. Go ahead run an SD-1 in front of the SV and you got that sound
There are definitely some similarities but the VM does have its own thing going on as well. I plan to do more Vintage Modern content in the near future.
Thank you for watching!
I have an original 100 watt Jubilee head that I bought new in 1987…I’ll be damned if I don’t like the Studio 20 Jubilee better…The 20 has a mid range bark that the 100 just doesn’t have..I think all the Studio series Marshall’s are great….it’s fun to crank a 100 watt Marshall..a 100 watt Jubilee on 7 is a lot of fun, just not practical anymore..
I'm 54 but I'm fighting practicality tooth and nail LOL!!!!! Thankfully I'm in my own house so I can get away with some noise.
I haven't heard the Studio Jubilee but, given how much I'm loving this reissue, I bet I would LOVE it. God knows, I'm still super impressed with the Baby Plexi and 800!
Thank you for watching!
@@TheGuitarNerdShow I am 58,so I remember when you had to play loud, but these days,I live in an apartment,so I am afraid those days are over for me..Don’t get me wrong, every now and then when I catch the neighbors gone,I rattle the windows every chance I get…I think all the Studio Series sounds great, but the Jubilee is the best one to me..but they all do that thing, and much easier to carry!..I have a Fryette PS,which pairs really well with them..
Veru nice!
Whats your favourite?
Chees from Portugal 🤘🍺🇵🇹
Ya know, I really don’t have a favorite. I think they all excel at different things.
Thank you for watching!
This 20w thing even sounds better than big ones.
Sadly I've never played a real plexi at volume but it's definitely on my bucket list!
Thanks for watching!
@@TheGuitarNerdShow I am more jcm 800 fan :)
A decibel meter would have been helpful when comparing volumes...................you know because it actually measures volume.
Do you understand how the measure of decibels actually works? As an example, a 50 watt Marshall is only roughly 3db less than a 100 watt Marshall. So taking these 20 watt Marshalls, which I'll guarantee are pushing more than 20 watts at full volume (just as a 100 watt Plexi pushes upwards of 150-200 watts when cranked) I'd venture to say there might be a 5 to 7db difference, if that.
But your point is an interesting one. Perhaps I'll put my DB meter on a stand and video the readings as I switch between the amps. Could end up being very informative.
Thanks for watching!
I would love to see that!!! Would be good if you had some software that would take the average dB levels for a 10 second recording and compare the 4 amps. Otherwise those decibel levels jump all over the spot, and given lag/latency, can make it hard to compare in "real time". Looking out for that@@TheGuitarNerdShow
I sold mine. Too bright and harsh.
Really? Even with the volumes cranked? Before I bought this I expected it based on my other experiences with Plexi style amps but I haven’t run into it.
Thanks for watching!
