  • For this video, I took I-96 east from Grand Rapids towards Lansing, Michigan’s capital. It was an unusually dry stretch of weather - as the region still hadn’t seen much snow to this point of the year, but like a typical winter day in Michigan, it was chilly at 40 degrees and a gray sky dominated the region. The day was Friday, December 27, 2019 at about 11 am.
We pulled into the outskirts of Lansing we were immediately greeted with the city’s worst side. This area of Michigan is on the city’s southwest side, near the intersection of Jolly and Waverly. We’ll look around here for a few minutes, and then drive into downtown proper before heading over to East Lansing and Michigan State University.
Lansing ranks 70th in America for worst crime, and in Michigan proper, it’s sixth worst, with a violent crime rate that’s three times higher than the state average.
Now we’re going to head east on Saginaw and go into downtown proper.
We’re in downtown Lansing. Originally, Detroit was the capital of Michigan when it became a state in 1837. But Detroit was really close to the Canadian border they wanted to move the state capital more away from British controlled Canada. Many cities like Ann Arbor Jackson and Marshall lobbied to be the new state capital. They couldn't decide and out of frustration chose Lansing township. Many laughed, because at the time there were only 20 people living in all of Lansing Township
Most of what is known as Lansing today is the result of the city becoming an industrial powerhouse which began with the founding of Oldsmobile in 1897. Of course, today, Michigan is still by far the nation’s leading producer of automobiles.
Landings population is currently 118,000 making it the fifth largest city in the state. Though just like other Michigan cities like Detroit and Flint, the decline in the auto industry saw Lansing’s population drop from a peak of 132,000 in the late 70s.
Today, auto manufacturing still dominate the Lansing economy, along with insurance and healthcare. GM still makes a few cars in downtown Lansing, including the Chevy Camaro.
The recent decline of the auto industry in the region has increased the region's awareness of the importance of a strategy to foster the high-technology sector.
Lansing has a number of technology companies in the fields of information technology and biotechnology.
Mappy did you know Larry page confounder google is from Lansing
Downtown Lansing has a historic city market that is one of the oldest continuously operating farmers' markets in the United States.
This is where the single A affiliate for the Toronto Blue Jays play - the Lansing Lugnuts. They’ve won two league titles.
We’ll take Michigan Avenue a few miles into east Lansing now.
The Michigan Avenue corridor is a very area here in Lansing. It’s lined with restaurants, bars, shops and places to live. The city is currently working on a $250 million dollar restoration plan to completely reshape this corridor.
Now, we’ll cross into East Lansing and visit Michigan State University.
This is the Spartan Statue, which marks a highly trafficked area on the MSU campus. Many people stop and take pictures here. This is Spartan Stadium, where Michigan State plays its football games.
Now we’ll leave Michigan State’s campus and head back west again towards downtown Lansing along Michigan Avenue again. Off to the distance you can see Michigan’s capital building once again.
This channel talks about America, different states, education, travel, geography and what it's like to live in different places in America.

I was born and grew up in Lansing, and this video reminded me that most of the time, with exceptions in the summer, the area weather is cloudy and gray. I never paid any attention to that until I moved away for a few years and then returned. Dark gray, rain and snow, beautiful fall days, but then a snowy cold winter. Not sure I could live there all year around again. But I still love the area and it was a great place to "come of age" in the '50's , '60's and '70's. Go Sparty!!

I do. It's mostly a mixed to somewhat negative bag for me, but I've been to some places in Michigan that are far worse. I like the fact that it's affordable, there are some parks to visit, and while there are bad neighborhoods, there are also really great neighborhoods with actual character (the West Side especially comes to mind). What I cannot stand is that the roads are the worst, the public schools are under-performing, the poverty is bad, although this is minor at night it tends to be dead, and it is correct that crime is terrible in certain neighborhoods. So, it's a catch-22 and definitely a working class community.

Dear Nick, you brought me fond memories, as I was in Lansing / East Lansing for a sunday one-day visit a real long time ago; to be exact, in june 1968! I was a teenager senior high school from Sao Paulo, Brazil, then living in Lapeer/MI, and my American parents drove me around on sundays to discover Michigan. I remember we parked the car at the E. Michigan Avenue and went into the Capitol for a sightseeing, when I spotted a plate laying on the front door of the Governor's office room, depicting George Romney's name. Another glimpse of memory was the existence of one WMCA building at less than a couple of blocks from the Capitol. I still have some snapshots I took from Lansing, including MSU and former Oldsmobile plant with green (or blue) glasses on its front facade, that are waiting in a carton box to be rediscovered. Thanks for the experience.

I grew up in East Lansing, and everyone in my family had lived in the state since my great grandparents came over from the volga just before WWI. My grandparents owned a bar and rented apartments on grand river ave through much of the mid 20th century, my mom worked for the state government, my dad worked for Lansing public schools, and my uncle worked for GM for much of his life. It was really strange watching what was happening to the state/city growing up as a child. Seeing all the old leftover infrastructure from the glory days of GM, seeing the decline in local businesses and and seeing our schools get worse each year. It's the kind of thing that only really made sense to me as an adult in hindsight. I don't think there are any single groups or people to blame for the decline in the area, but it's sad to see a place with so much history and community feel so empty and soulless.

Growing up in Lansing through the late 80's and 90's was amazing. It was great then, a thriving city that felt safe. When the GM plants closed down and all of those well-paying jobs left the city, that's when things started to change.
Hanging out at the carnivals in Logan Square on MLK as a 10-12 year old (at night and without parents) would be absolutely unheard of today, even 15 years ago. They stopped having those carnivals because of all the shootings and fights.
I remember going to Putt Putt, Apple Sports Plex, Edru, Lansing Ice Arena/Twistars, getting ice cream at Frosty Corner, going to the AMC theater by the mall, swimming at Lake Lansing(before it became poop soup) and all of the fun parks(Frances, Hawk Island, Patriarch, Sharp, there's so many). CATA rides were 25 cents. The big picnics they would have for all the kids who were Safety's in Lansing schools. The whole city would come out to watch the fireworks on the 3rd and 4th of July. Cinco de Mayo at Cristo Rey and the Carribean festivals at LCC. Jazz Festivals in Old Town. I could go on and on.
I had a great childhood in Lansing. It was a great place to grow up. I'm watching videos like this because I miss it. Hopefully things can continue to improve and Lansing can rebound like never before.

Lansing is better off now than it has been since probably the 60's or 70's. The closure of the GM plants resulted in basically no net job loss over the long term because they built the Delta and Grand River plants (and now a battery plant as well). The last census even showed a population increase for the first time in decades.

You avoided nearly every hood and abandoned factories/plants in Lansing which isn't surprising being a tourist. You could've gotten a far more realistic feel for the city with much better and less repetitive footage exploring Old town. The East side through Kalamazoo and Baker. The West side through MLK Saginaw and Willow. The North side through Grand River Pennsylvania Turner and César E Chávez Ave. And the South side of town through Churchill Downs Jolly Cedar and Holmes just to name a few. East Lansing is a college town separate from Lansing they're two different cities. You should do a separate video on East Lansing. There's plenty of good footage to be seen of the MSU campus and north of the area. I'd get off the strip more often and explore the surrounding neighborhoods for a truer feel of any city you ride through in the future.

Ryan. Do you have a passport? Have you ever used it? Paris is a beautiful city. So is Rome. In fact, most European cities are fabulous places to live.
Based on this video. If I was forced to move to Lansing. I would probably develop a serious drug habit and / or kill myself. Outside of East Germany, or the industrial cities of Poland, when the Communist governments were in power (1945-1989/90/91) during which time I visited. This has to be one of the most depressing places to live in the world. I see no soul. No heartbeat. No culture. Almost no people. Except in cars.
So Lansing is trying to attract tech companies? Good luck with that.
I lived in Denver during its tech boom and it had great outdoor sports, all year round. A great bar and restaurant scene. Endless places to visit within an hour's drive. Okay, its not the fairest comparison. My point is that Denver started it's tech boom in the 1990's. Lansing has missed the boat. By a generation. That in itself is very, very sad. Whoever's been running your town
for the last thirty years, really screwed the pooch :(

I was born and spent my first 22 years in Lansing, first on South Logan Street near Jolly and then near Waverly and Saginaw. Looking back, it was a pretty good place to spend your childhood. South Logan was pretty rural at the time so it was like living in the country. As a kid you really don't mind the snow that much and there were a lot of public ice skating rinks to hang out with your friends. It was easy to study state government with the capitol handy and large industry with Oldsmobile. If you wanted culture you drove 20 minutes into East Lansing and took advantage of the vast MSU offerings. And of course during the summer you went "up north" to stay on one of a myriad of lakes. I only return now to plant relatives at Deepdale Cemetery. I'll end up there as well, some day.

"We pulled into the outskirts of Lansing and were immediately greeted by the city's worst side." is an editorial choice and a farce. You just don't pull into the intersection of Waverly and Jolly from the highway. You either get off of 496 at Waverly and go over the Grand River or you get off of 96 at MLK and have to make quite a few turns to get to that intersection.

There are some apartment buildings and houses behind you, but Jolly Road ends back out there and goes nowhere .... so you weren't just naturally going from one point to the next off of the highway. You had to think about it and contrive a starting point of your tour of Lansing.

Even though I really liked your drive through the MSU campus, there are many other places that better represent the city then where you went. The east side is good and then there's Potter Park zoo and the Oldsmobile plants, that are still there. Maybe it was because it was a super cloudy day, that made the tour so bad. Grew up on the west side near Grand Woods Park, lived on the south side near Penn and Jolly for a number of years, and currently ive near Eastwood Town Center. This town has its good and bad the same as everywhere else. But the local food here blows out the national chains imo. Want a pizza? Go to DeLucas on the north side. Want a great burger at a low price? Try Nip n Sip. Want some awesome breakfast? Go to Golden Harvest. And if you want good ice cream, go to any of the Quality Dairy stores literally all over town. Lots of lovely parks here, some beautiful walking trails (the River Trail you can go pretty much all through the city). We're a 90 minute drive from both Lake Michigan and Huron, but if you want a short drive to swim Hawk Island is nice. (I prefer that over Lake Lansing any day)

I’ve never been to the Michigan State campus but I’ve heard more than once that it’s one of the nicest in the Big 10. A former classmate of mine worked in Iraq and Afghanistan for an engineering firm that designed/built a lot of our military bases over there. He once described each base as being as big as a Big 10 university campus and said there was a disincentive for the U.S. to pull out over there because we’d invested so much $’s to leave it all behind. And we wonder why so many of our cities back home look so forlorn, not really including Lansing/East Lansing which looked pretty good - for one thing I didn’t see much if any overhead utility wires that are so prevalent and brings down the appearance of urban & suburban areas in the northeast.

I worked at Lansing Police at 911 for almost 20 years. When you mentioned the Capital, it brought to mind a well known story about it. It seems that Detroit and Grand Rapids were bickering about which city would be the Capital city. Well, one of the Representatives got tired of it and made the motion to make it in Lansing as a joke. Seems not too many knew it was a joke. They approved it and built the first Capital building a block east of where you were on Capital Avenue. At the corner of Washington and Ottawa a wooden building was created. Seems all the Senators and Representatives slept in that building due to the wolves, and the mosquito's. Malaria was very prevalent seeing as Lansing used to be a swamp!!!

Another few fun facts for Lansing:
What once was the Lansing School for the Blind on Willow St, on the north end of downtown, is the school that Stevie Wonder graduated from. It has since been sitting mostly vacant, with part of the campus used as a senior assisted living facility.
Many old railway spurs in Lansing have been abandoned due to the closure of many small businesses on the branch and the closure of Oldsmobile, including all the old factory lots and the factory yard/ rail loading docks. However, the Adrian and Blissfield Railroad company (ADBF) was under a Norfolk Southern (NS) subsidiary contract for the Lansing and Jackson railroad from 2010 to 2020, which they recently purchased from NS to continue operating small businesses on the many spurs in Lansing. ADBF also operates in their name-sake area, in the small business district area of Adrian and Blissfield, and north to Ann Arbor. Before NS bought the line in 1998, it was shortly owned by Conrail from 1971-1996. Conrail failed to operate much on the line, with few passenger services after the fall of the Penn Central Railroad, and only operated the line to keep services to the few businesses open on the branch. Before Conrail, the railroad was run by the defunct companies of Michigan Central Railroad and the Penn Central Railroad, and was the Lansing switching point for the Peir-Marquette Railroad which intersected at the now CSX Einsel Yard on the north end. They only run between Gaylord and Grand Rapids today. There does happen to be a dinner train for the public in Charlotte, Michigan that runs a loop around that area's old portion of the Michigan Central/ Penn Central passenger line between Grand Rapids and Detroit. As far as I know, the line is terminated in Grand Rapids, Detroit, Lansing, and either side of the rail loop near Charlotte.

Lansing does not look too bad even with grey skies. Good video, AK and MI are the only states that I have not visited, unless you count crossing the border from IN, somewhere along the 80/90.
Plan to make a drive along the coast in MI during a hot AZ summer.

I actually moved TO Michigan voluntarily. From the dregs of the East Coast. MICHIGAN HALL of FAME: Tom Selleck, Lily Tomlin, The Romantics, Knack lead singer, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Mitch Ryder, Madonna, Jeff Daniel's, Eminem, Kid Rock, Bob Seeger, Ted Nugent, Michael Moore, Tim Allen, Grand Funk Railroad, The White Stripes, Diana Ross, Casey Kasem, Glenn Frey (Eagles), Jane's Caan, Tony Dungy, Danny Thomas (also Toledo), Magic Johnson, Larry Page, Stevie Wonder, Sonny Bono, Jack Paar, Danica Patrick, Commander Cody, ? & The Mysterians, Stephen Sagall. Name another state that has produced this much fame. The charm of Michigan is the fact that everyone bitches about being here. I've never seen so much self loathing. That's what keeps people here. Have lived in at least 10 places in different regions of the country, and there is no place like MICHIGAN. Michiganders love to hate the beautiful state we live in. There is a metaphysical bond there if you're willing to look for it. The road ends in Detroit, never mind the potholes!!...................................edit... MICHIGAN HALL OF FAME (missed on the first round): Aretha Franklin, Thomas Edison, Gerald Ford, Lee Iacocca, Elmore Leonard, Charles Lindbergh, Henry Ford, Joe Louis, Malcolm X, Gilda Radner, Mitt Romney, Sinbad, John Smoltz, Serena William's, Dan Gilbert, Francis Ford Coppola, Christie Brinkley.............you tube constantly puts in apostrophes where they shouldn't be......Should be James Caan.....forgot Roger Penske (think he's a Michigander).........Have lived in 10 different places for an extended period of time in each. Rural and urban. MICHIGAN querks: Speeding fast on the freeway and driving through existing traffic on both lanes, streetlights hanging on traffic wire over intersections, telling you where a city is by using your hand as a map, follow through at intersection to make a left turn and circle back U-turn, over represented American cars compared to rest of the country, severe self loathing of living here and expecting no one to even consider living here voluntarily, Detroit hate, Detroit love, Detroit love and hate at the same time in the same sentence, Detroit and Detroit alone being a topic of conversation, still not being able to figure out what a person from Michigan is called, hating Michigan but returning to visit or live later and still hating it, Vernors, love of state, hate of state, whining constantly about the weather, counting the minutes until you can get out of this miserable state, time delay at a green light for traffic to start up in Detroit, Dream Cruise (upwards of 50,000 classic car traffic jam on Woodward Avenue in August, the biggest cruise in the country), Detroit ( just being Detroit), most affluent zip code in country a mere 10 miles from one of the poorest zip codes in country (upper Oakland to Central Woodward, Highland Park), Mile Roads, only point in US north of a point in Canada, two peninsulas, deer living on an urban island, six lane surface streets with virtually no traffic, only time tanks have ever been rolling down city streets for security during uprising, only island where autos are banned, county with lowest population density in eastern third of US.
