For anyone wanting to play as Sonic properly in Mario, there’s a fan game called Sonic Boll (that O is intentional) that is basically a remake of SMB1 and Lost Levels but with multiple characters - Mario, LL-style Luigi, Stanley from DK3, Sonic, Tails, Mecha Sonic (Sonic 2), and there’s even a couple unlockable characters. A lot of the characters have skins too, like Mario can be Toad/ette (don’t remember which but the other is available on Luigi I think), Stanley can be Geno, and Mecha Sonic can be Michael Jackson.

Mario and Sonic at Maze Mayhem.
Animation's pretty good. But the mixture between 16-bit and 8-bit sprites is a bit jarring with some scenes.
Sonic's sprites come from Sonic Mania, a 16-bit, SEGA Saturn inspired game made by the same folks who made the Sonic 1, 2 and CD mobile ports.
Bowser seems to be inspired by Super Mario World, whether it's from Super Mario Maker or just a bunch of custom sprites based off of his appearance in that game is unknown to me.
Typically when making an replica of the 8-bit Mario games the sprites for Sonic are his sprites from the Sonic games on the SEGA Master System/SEGA Game Gear or from Sonic Pocket Adventure.

The video itself is great, I feel like the title was just a mashup of the 3 SEO keywords: mario, maze, mayhem
One of the issues with speedy animations is people don't get to admire tricks that they can't see happen. Remember the human brain works in 8ms intervals so it usually takes at least 4-5x that to really get an understanding of what actually happened especially if vision is the only input. It may seem counter-intuitive to artificially slow animation but tailoring it to the human brain-speed is actually the best way to really have someone admire a scene rather than have to backtrack mentally to reconstruct what it just saw and infer based on the ending of a maneuver.
Just a thought
We really need a Mario & Luigi game with Sonic, like how they did with Paper Mario... _wait the DS won't have any new games_

See, if Mario and sonic stopped being rivals for two seconds they'd realize how great of a team they could actually be. Excellent job on the animation by the way, super fluid, action packed, great ideas of how they might use thier abilities together.
