Trying, and often succeeding, in saving lives is NOT a “humble” task, compared to the deliberate destroying of lives! Just saying…
The prevalent attitude of glorifying violence and hatred compared to compassion for others seems well entrenched in the human psyche, it’s in evidence in human culture, stories, etc. , which is why wars and violence in smaller, more personal encounters will never end on this shithole of a planet…

My grandfather was born in Georgia. He was of German-Jewish heritage. Because he spoke German he was made an MP (Military Police). He interviewed and instructed German POWs (Prisoners of War) from the North African Campaign. They shipped him with the POWs to a POW camp in Alabama. Carrying a Firearm makes one a Combatant. While Non-Combatants are expected to be protected under the Geneva Conventions, Some Enemies never signed them, others Ignored them, which led to some Medical Personnel carrying Firearms for protection of their patients and themselves.

In the Pacific theatre (where Doss fought), it was typical for a medic to carry a weapon at all times, because the Japanese had not ratified the terms of the Geneva convention.
On the Western Front (where Germany had ratified the terms) medics did still have service weapons, typically a carbine, or pistol, however they would not always carry it with them into a battle. It was mostly for protecting patients who could be targeted. It was really a choice on the Western Front, never enforced. You could carry a weapon if you wanted, but it came at the cost of your protection from the Geneva Convention.

He is right about medics. The Army is right about not giving them weapons. While not exactly the same, it is analogous in Case of the myslim officer who murdered several soldiers in Texas Army base some years ago.

I had the privilege of meeting an older man at a meeting. We got to talking and he told us that he was a medic in Korea. He was short in stature, but huge in bravery! He carried the wounded soldiers down the “frozen Chosen” back to the hospital. Up and down, under fire. I think about him often. Much respect!
