Really appreciate how honest they are, they set their standards for a good bagel and stuck to it, props Personally I think Utopia and Esse a bagel are the ones for me, they both looked damn near perfect and I wanna go to Utopia just to try the Worth It bagel
oh my, Tompkins Square bagels - THE BEST bagels! I always have to get at least two - my go-to usual traditional bagel order and then one fun one just to try. their espresso cream cheese is delicious!!
I'm from Montreal and I love our bagels. I was surprised when I had a new York bagel, but I loved the toppings of new York bagels. So many options! Marrying the 2 would be perfect! Also I never heard of black seeds and white seeds. It's kind of just original or sesame seed or black or poppy. But nobody says white for sesame
this is cool, but as a lifelong new yorker and bread enthusiast, the fact that this video included no uptown bagel joints (tal! absolute! h&h! bo's!) is disappointing. i would never.
I was literally about to comment about Tal's bagels! They can be expensive, but they are honestly the best bagels I have ever had. I was definitely disappointed not to see them
I've been working from home in my pajamas since March. I go to the grocery store and Walmart once a week and that's about it. A lightly toasted bagel with cream cheese or even better lox and cream cheese and some coffee or English breakfast tea in the morning is what I look forward to. I don't live in NYC but I appreciate a good bagel.
I grew up in NYC. folks go to their local, near by bagel shop. that's why there are hundreds across the 5 counties aka boroughs. every neighborhood has delis, pizza, bagels etc...😊
New York is suppose to be the gold standard in Bagels. Never been there, but when I lived in San Jose there were some very very fine Bagel shops whose Bagels blew my hair back. I'm now in Montana, and had to spend a good year or more to perfect my sourdough bagels. They are excellent, and my few regular customers agree whole heartedly. Unfortunately I cannot compete with 6 for a $1.98 crap that is available at the grocery stores. Either people don't know, or don't care and figure they is good enough.
Omg I used to live in Sunset Park and before I even started the video I thought "Bagel Hole's the best but no way do they know about little ol' Bagel Hole" haha. Clearly I think you made the right choice!
You chose 5 great places to review. I used to grab an occasional bagel at Ess-A-Bagel years ago... Glad to know they're still doing well... I hope to catch places like this in DC to review on my show, Beat A Bagel... Thank you for sharing your thoughts... evanjbreadlessinjersey
My brother had a trip to New York last month and he asked me if I want anything from New York I said bring me some bagel and he brought home a dozen of bagel, I toast it put some store bought cream cheese and put on some smoked salmon that I got from Costco. It was the most delicious bagel that I have ever had, we finish a dozen of bagel in 2 and a half days
Two and a half days??? When my mom would come visit me after I moved to LA, she would bring me a dozen bagels from H&H Bagels (THE best bagels from NYC!). They would be gone the next day! 😂 Pro-tip! Costco does, in fact, have GREAT lox!
I’ve never looked for bubbles on bagels, but generally speaking, bubbles on the outer crust of breads is an indication of a longer cold fermentation, not boiling.
Agh. You were in Park Slope and didn't include La Bagel Delight?! You missed their Whole Wheat Everything! & Bagel Boy in Sheapshead Bay is an institution.
I never heard of everything bagels when growing up. I wonder who invented it. Now everything bagels are all over but I don't like it - too many flavors at once. I like separate bagels - poppyseed, onion, garlic, and sesame - all separate.
Sadly, all of these places are closed now. Edit: I was trolling, they're more than likely open. Go support these businesses if you live in NYC by getting take out in the morning and deliveries all throughout the day.
@@DakotaDeady They deliver when closed? Amazing. Hope they are up for express one day shipping to Asia (where I live). Also Dakota, don't mind my feeble Internet trolling. Great work on this piece ... Utopia is the real deal.
I’ve been to three of those five places (never made it to Tompkins Sq.or Utopia) and agree with Dakota’s rankings. Bagel Hole is the ideal bagel and anyone who disagrees doesn’t understand what a bagel is supposed to be. Ess-a-Bagel makes a tasty roll that is not a bagel; it’s not supposed to be so large and squishy that the hole is obscured and that anything you put on it has to fight the bagel for attention. I like Black Seed because they’re the right size and texture and I respect the quality ingredients and craft that goes into their bagels - but honestly I don’t understand the hoopla over Montreal style. Too sweet and too skinny in my book. Other bagels to check out: Kossar’s on the LES, Absolute on the UWS, and if you must have a bloated puffy “bagel” Brooklyn Bagels & Coffee does a better job with that style IMO.
Hello, enjoyed your video. Was in NY last week for a full on 4 day bagel fest to find the best bagel. Hands down and it's not even close Utopia is almost GOD in the bagel business. Scott and his son are absolute rock stars. Nothing in NY on it's best day comes close to Utopia. Essa was okay, and Black Seed doesn't crack the top 100 anywhere on the planet. With that being said, I would like to personally invite you to Siegel's Bagelmania here in Las Vegas if you want to try the best bagel on the planet. Yes, I know it sounds like total madness having the best bagel outside of NY, and of all places Vegas. Again, I know, I know. But once you step foot inside Bagelmania you'll know. Trust me.

I know it's been a year and a half since you made the video. However the blisters on the bagel are the fermentation process. Usually they should let the bagels after shaping ferment for one two days the longer the better but no more than three. Great job on the video.
I don't mind. More stuff for me to enjoy during this quarantine while I'm bored 😋. It helps a lot more living in NYC so I can enjoy this stuff afterward!
For anyone that cares, these bagel places have been mass-rated by Yelpers and this is their verdict: Ess-a-Bagel, 4-star average (out of five); Utopia Bagels, 4-star average; Tompkins Square Bagels, 4-star average; Bagel Hole, 3.5 star average; and Black Seed, 3 star average. Black Seed especially got slammed for their tiny, dense, overpriced bagels. So much for these bagel "experts."
There is no "best". You like what you like, and no one can tell you what the Eff you like. Some people like big babels, some like small. Some like them from H&H, some like them from Ess-a-Bagel. Some have a local famous shop yet travel all the way to Manhattan. Rather than uselessly attempt to pit one completely subjective thing against another, why not thoughtfully and usefully celebrate the many options and differences? NYC is the mixing pot. It takes all kinds.
You didn't go to Oasis Bagels in Fresh Meadows, Queens? You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. They have been in existence since 1961 and are consistently in the top 5 lists. I was weaned on their bagels!!
