- Blodwyn Pig was a British blues rock band, founded in 1968 by guitarist-vocalist-songwriter Mick Abrahams.
Abrahams left Jethro Tull, due to a falling-out with Tull vocalist Ian Anderson, after their debut album, This Was, was released, and formed Blodwyn Pig with Jack Lancaster (saxophone and flute), Andy Pyle (bass guitar), and Ron Berg (drums). Ex-Yes and future Flash guitarist Peter Banks became one of several guitarists to succeed Abrahams after he left to form his own band for a time.
Saw them at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh circa 1969. The bill was Stone the Crows, followed by Blodwyn Pig with Ten Years After headlining!
I saw blodwyn pig at the Fillmore East in nov.1969! They were opening: johnny winter/Edgar Winter group were headlining. Chicago Transit authority( still using that name then), were in between(terry kath/guitar!). But "pig" stole the show! I never saw an opening group at the Fillmore get a standing ovation! They came out and played"slow down"as an encore! "Pig" owned the Fillmore East that night! What a great time to be alive!
That is a great story, wish I had seen them. Enjoy the memory for ever brother.
Its 2024 and still listening
I listened to their first two albums. Excellent.
Saw them at Mothers Erdington-great show
blodwyn pig`s "ahead rings out" is an absolutely incredible album. it has all the virtuosity of jethro tull, but also a unique freshness
and an irreverence that the more thought-out tull lacked; almost punk-jazz at times, but with an impeccable, lovely sense for melody,
too: "see my way" has an amost child-like innocence that can move a receptive listener to tears.
Ahead Rings Out is a five star classic, the whole LP is great with one of the coolest cover jackets ever.
Dear Jill also a CLASSIC song
have enjoyed the "Pig" for decades!!!
They were miles ahead e the times
THIS IS A GREAT SONG. Really beautiful almost English folk melody that transitions to a driving jazz improv. This got me into Mick Abrahams and Blodwyn Pig in a big way...he is a tremendous guitarist. (Listen to his work with Tull- the first record, This Was). Mick still is great guitarist, from what I've heard of his later recordings.
You have to appreciate how well he plays here, how clean with that SG through slightly overdriven Orange amps. Not too many rock guitarists play this way anymore, because they can't. They're too dependent on overdrive pedals. Well done, Mick, if by some chance you see this!
Mick Abrahams has a really great voice.
You all see my way! Lol. First album I pulled from my stepdads collection, just because of the smoking pig on the cover.... He had a giant collection of vinyl, this song rings through my head to this day.
Very underrated, fantastic solos and great numbers.
One of the greatest guitarists of Rock
Aye. Mick is a very underrated guitarist and he was a good singer too
Thank gooooodnes for The Beat , you guy's are on a roll !!!!
I think you meant 'on a roll'.
Thank you * exclamation point *
Saxophonist Jack Lancaster, along with Robin Lumley (Brand X), created a fantastic rock version of Sergej Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf in 1975 with a bevy of well-known musicians. Among them were Manfred Mann, Gary Brooker, Chris Spedding, Percy Jones, Gary Moore, Stephane Grapelli, Eno, Keith Tippett, John Hiseman, Bill Bruford, Cozy Powell, Phil Collins, Alwin Lee, Julie Tippett.
Why can’t music today sound like this?
Because of the bean counters who put bottom line over artistic merit.
@@lestrum Because AUTO TUNE!
The same sort of reasons you can’t get ludes anymore. People in charge who seem to want to outlaw fun
WTF! Outstanding! My head rings now.
WOW. i'd forgotten about them. Excellent. Thanks for posting this.
Boy, seeing & hearing this song makes me miss the days it was recorded...
Always great to hear. Thank you.
Love Jack Lancaster especially playing two saxes - unique sound.
You know, it really is! Roland Kirk and Dick Heckstall-Smith use this technique too.
@@Hiwatt100W1 and David Jackson (of Van Der Graaf Generator)
@@Hiwatt100W1 Mr Heckstall-Smith gives us some wonderful double-sax work on Jack Bruce's "Things We Like" album, also notable for its great cover showing Jack sitting on the floor with a *huge* plate of potatoes and sausages with his dogs and, of course, a Ferrari Daytona (?) in the background
@@doctorpatient519 Ha! "Things We Like" is one of my favorite albums; that picture of Jack with the Golden Retrievers and the Ferrari Daytona (IMHO one of the most beautiful Ferraris of all time) eating bangers and mash LOL! BTW, I'm a physician too LOL!
@@Hiwatt100W1 truth be told, I'm not a physician, and "patient" is an adjective here ... and thanks for the lovely "bangers and mash"
Beat club is the best channel in the universe.
Seen them live twice around this time,At the Wolverhampton's Wulfrun Hall, And Club Lafayette,They were very good memories,They got mobbed as they left the stage at the Laff, Got to ruffle Mick's hair, Remember them enjoying the fame all laughing and loving it. Bit off Cats squirrel in there Did anyone notice? Thanks for uploading New Ear Buds, Came on here hoping I could find some live pig from the 70's And I have Thank You!
I was at the Wulfrun gig, great night. I remember Mick saying the last time they played in Wolverhampton was at the Laff and Andy Pyle puked mid gig without missing a note! Worryingly he said that tonight Andy would have a big shit on stage! Thankfully he didn't!
Saw them in L.A. at The Whiskey and they were phenomenal; great show, now I wish I had gone the next night.
When I went to college in 1970 there was some sort of "tell us about yourself - music you like and so on ..". I mentioned Blodwyn Pig. They looked at me gone out! :) I don't think this is the first time I have listened to this band since then ... but I haven't listened much (and don't listen to that much music now anyway) ... but maybe I should revisit the likes of Spooky Tooth, Keef Hartley, Aynsley Dunbar etc. I wonder how many of the band members of groups such as those are still living. As I write this I believe John Mayall is still going, and I have had the good fortune to listen to him play live on a couple of occasions. Sorry for the ramble! :)
Одна из самых известных песен Blodwyn Pig, просто невероятный джаз-фьюжн-джем, с блестящей игрой Джека Ланкастера на саксе...
Rock'and'Roll Yesterday today and always
As good as Benefit and AquaLung were my favorite JT album will ALWAYS be the very first one with Mick Abrahams. Great musician. Actually lost my interest in JT after he left - and then when Glenn Cornick left it basically became the Ian Anderson band. Can’t argue with the success of JT but in my opinion JT was NOT the same band without the 2 members mentioned above. Yes - Aqualung was a huge success but I’ll take the albums before that any day. Again - just my opinion.
I thought I was going to hate Blodwyn Pig at first, but now I think Mick Abrahams is a pretty good guitarist and the saxophone playing by Jack Lancaster is quite colorful. They're not better than Jethro Tull, but they come pretty close to rivaling them! Maybe it was a good thing that Mick Abrahams left Jethro Tull, because if he hadn't, I would have never discovered Blodwyn Pig and their talented members!
Saw them way back then.
Our band covered this song in about 1971. Great song, they played it 1000 times better than we could. I just thought about the song and wanted to see if the guy really played 2 saxes at the same time. Check. Also, that's a kickin guitar solo.
To whoever remaster this, thank you. Other posts of this performance sounded like Dog Doo-Doo.
Really a one of a kind...another blend of Blues-rock/jazz fusion...unique to this era and group...Also really like Mic's 'Cat Squirrel' - I think Clapton/Cream did it also, early Tull ( when Mic was in it) I got this LP from my friends older brother, back from college...in the day this stuff was not on the shelf...we did however have a local band...'Split Enz' turned 'BOOT' who played this tune at the Electric Zoo, I had thought they wrote it until i got that LP...in 69'...
@Pedro Aponte : epic yes,a collector of obscure vinyl.50+ yrs ago.still a favorite.
🔥👍🏼
Back when pigs flew 👌🏼
In a pigs eye.
good
The audio is good, but I can't see them playing in the dark!
One of the members is a moderately distant relative to me. Used to make jokes about them then found out actually it's pretty good stuff.
@3:52 it transitions into a section inspired by Ravel’s Bolèro.
I'm going to get my vinyl copy of 'Ahead rings out' and crank up the old Marantz amp and torture the speakers.
😌💕
Mick Abrhams, such a lovely man.
..oh dear..
the section around 01:34 could be Mr. Bungle . o.O ! edit: the whole song could be Mr. Bungle ! Wow !!!
Did somebody forget to turn the lights on?...
Beat club videos were usually filmed much better than this. You are right.
@@lestrum Yes, there's a place for artsy directing, and a music show isn't one of them (see also the awful phasing on TOTP performances from the early 70s).
@@ShanghaiRooster in those days very few knew how to film a rock concert properly. And the drugs properly didn't help their perspective.
This was uploaded with the volume way too low.
Abrahams def. takes of on this one, but I think one of their problems was to live up to the standard of playing, and another thing, they look rather introvert, almost hiding, and that "S not the best aproach. But that dosn"t change the greatness of-Getting to this, and they sure did.
a great take on "see my way", but definitely not up to the level of playing on "ahead rings out". the appearance of being "introverted"
is however down to the way this was recorded at beat club; with no audience(!), the group standing in a circle(!) and bad lighting:
considering the circumstances, this is actually a pretty good recording!
Sounds a bit like early Van Der Graaf Generator mixed with early Gong.
you need to check out a band called "Spooky Tooth" and another band called "Audience".
@@michaelmorris5288 I know those bands.
BIG influence / precursor on Krautrock
Sounds like early Tull
i wonder why?

Terrible camera work … was the producer in another room ?
