#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.
Rules:
1: No discrimination or hate speech.
2: No affiliation links that do not belong to nerdSlayer.

hey NSS i was wondering if you'd be cool with copying the type of Death of a Game for a oneoff video i wanted to do about a game that is close to my heart that died about a year ago personally.
what music that you use in your intro?i try to search for it but have yet to find it
The window between me hearing about these games for the first time and them already dead has now reached a crescendo. This is the first time I've heard of this game and its already dead.
Same here, i think one might have something to do with the other 😉
there might or might not be a somewhat active server :)
Luckily the community for this game was able to emulate the servers and is still very active. The people that do play are pretty experienced, so it can be difficult to try and learn when going up against experts. There are bots though, so many people just play solo against bots
@@strapnel Too bad you can't buy this game anymore.
@@strapnel Is there a way to reach out to this community? I'm working on a game (Skygard Arena) that plays similarly and I'd love to get their feedback on our game.
I miss Atlas Reactor, the community manager was a friend of mine I met through twitch back when EA was trying their hand at mobas with Dawngate, miss that game too it had so much potential. If you're here Muzzy thanks for the hard work you put in on making the Atlas community what it was.
You mean ONE Community Manager, not "the" Community Manager. Muzzy did switch over to ArcheAge and since then, Mobi was the Community Manager.
"Friend". Yikes, parasocial vibe is strong here
Out of any and every game that's been shut down, *this* one will always be the one I wish I could go back to. There was- is nothing else like it.
Damn, it's so unique, i miss it a lot
There is a game called hexadome. Its similar
well actually its not totally dead
@@nix6184 id totally play even if I had to play with mostly bots, this game was amazing, it didnt deserve to be exucted just cause it wasnt as profitable as it could be
@@mestre12 It really isn't. It's missing the team element.
I remember this game very fondly. In my opinon, it was probably the only unique outlier in the Hero Shooter craze of 2016. I miss it greatly...
I was very big into atlas reactor and would do recaps of their weekly dev streams on reddit (as long as a mod of the semi-official discord server and subreddit), When they announced the transition from paid back to free to play, the biggest tell to how rushed this switch back from paid to free to play was that my recap of their dev stream was the only source of info cause they didn't have their articles written for it ready.
It was never going to be the biggest game in the world but some of the decisions they made around marketing was questionable at best, like the first couple(Only) of big marketing push trailers made the game seem a a lot different that what it actually was. The devs themselves did some amazing work and really cared about the game(thanks for adding a Boxing glove arrow skin for Khita after me bugging them about it for months)
We lived through so many head-scratching decisions, stumbling into trying to help them promote the game... It's such a shame, because that game was very unique and no other game is scratching the same itch.
You're right, and technically speaking, they actually changed the game design while promoting the game
Man...Atlas Reactor's death HURT. I played so much of it when it was Live. It never got the attention it deserved, and it's a shame that Gamigo squandered it. May it rest in peace next to MasterXMaster.
Atlas reactor was really unique with his own flavor and colors.
one of the many fews TBS game i actually enjoyed.
they released a coop version then closed it down
Atlas Reactor lives on with a fan server that currently runs with games 24/7. EVOS-AtlasReactor discord server is the Way and the Truth.
I loved this game it had a perfect mix of reading the opponent actions but also not being read by them.
Things not mentioned for archive if anyone else cares: The trailer giving the impression it would be a hero shooter, it had passionate devs and good promotion attempts some characters even had blogs/twitter to expand the reach, the community had competitive tournaments, there was a mode to control all 4 characters becoming a 1vs1 game, there was a launcher outside of steam so the numbers could be muddied, selecting perks for each abilities allowed for alternative playstyles
Yeah, I loved this game as well, I still remember that one time I perfectly predicted an enemy move into a stealth area as Blackburn and sniped them with the roll and shoot ability. It really was a unique title, with so much personality. A shame that in the end I started being plagued with technical issues that would force me to restart the game every 2 matches, which made it quite unfun in that regard. Although that prolly was partly on me, I was using a damn toaster of a laptop to play at the time.
Funny how I have a friend that ADORE this game and try to get me to played it. She must of been heart broken when it closed down!
Who t cares
@@chiapets2594Bro woke up on the wrong side of the bed

@@chiapets2594 chill man 😂
I am your friend, cause I cried when it died
For the people who are looking, there is a project which has resurrected Atlas reactor
where?
Hint, it's not on reddit@@screeno42
Hint, its not on reddit
They already had? Or they are in process? I found zero information in the internet about an Atlas Reactor project... it would be nice to go back to it if possible
@@greatteacherpablizuka Google evos Atlas reactor ✌️
i legit cried when they shut down this game, i was there up to the moment the server shut down. ended my last game few minutes before the server shut down and everyone chilling in the lobby saying goodbyes to each other.
not quite that emotional in my case, but i also played until the last moments, all the way from beta.
never seen another game like it since.
yeah i felt so crushed too.
RIP Atlas Reactor.
As close to a soulmate that a game has ever been for me.
Gameplay was goddamn impeccable.
Private servers let me get a taste again every once in a while, but it's certainly faded with time and the minuscule player pool.
Still my second most played game on steam still, half a decade later.
Thanks for giving this gem your time. Died the same death every niche title does : Squeezed to death for money post-acquisition, and then taken offline and stored in the IP vault.
Complete with a re-launch of the IP with a failing inferior implementation in a currently popular game type.
I think you did a decent high level summary of AR's life and death, though obviously there was a lot more drama happening inside the playerbase with the monetization model flipflop, and the way they tried to promote the rogues relaunch in what remained of the original AR subreddit/discords. Or how AR was one of the first games integrating discord during its launch into matchmaking for voice functionality.
still, cool to see you at least giving it a shout.
I miss this game it's still in my library
Man I miss this game so much. It was really fun to predict your opponent's moves, or be absolutely destroyed by someone doing the same.
This was one of the best multiplayer games I ever played, so bummed when it died.
It should be mandatory to release a server side client when a game is pulled so fans can keep it alive and have thriving communities.
That's why old games were better, people don't understand what they lost, now it's very hard to keep games alive, you really never "own" a game anymore, just a service with an expiration date.
I clicked so fast cause Atlas Reactor was such a good game
Nerdslayer, wherever you make a video on a game's death, there's like a 20% chance they come back(paragon with it's multiple remakes, lawbreakers, gigantic, and duelyst). So I need you to make videos on blacklight retribution, titanfall 1, and fault(a paragon clone). If my theory is correct one of these will come back to life 2-3 years later after the video is made.
I wonder how Atlas Reactor would fare now with turn-based tactics being in their new golden age.
There is a game called Hexadome, that, its pretty similar to atlas reactor.
@@mestre12 It is turn-based online PvP but it will be quite different. Can't wait to play it, thought :)
@@mestre12 That's single player teams though. Not the same.
@@dojelnotmyrealname4018 i said similar
it was pretty based
was playing it pretty much regularly with my homies
the turn based aspect made it VERY accessible
and not in a bad way
Gamigo isn’t a f2p mill, mill implies that something is being created. Gamigo is a f2p slaughterhouse. They buy a game, carve every penny they can out of it, and burn the remains.
Holy shit I've been waiting for this episode since it's death. I still have it in my steam library, untouched since 2017 with like 40 hours of gameplay on it. It was so fun
Same but with 300+ hours, it was my favorite multiplayer game
300 hours is about a quarter of my logged game time. Solo ranked was my jam
I never could get into Atlas Reactor enough to really learn the game but what I played was pretty fun. And I liked that the devs were pretty serious about making the universe fleshed out with seasonal stories.
Man. I played HABBO so much as a kid literally wasted 5+ years everyday playing. Excited to see it covered, so many memories.
Damn, that one hurt. Playing Atlas Reactor as group of 4 was so much fun, all the strategies and gambles we take to win, perfect predictions of our opponents just for one of as to screem "I told you" or "Readed him like a book". Such good memories, my friend still uses Pup as his pfp to this day
Atlas Reactor, you will be missed! It was the first game I sunk more hours in than usual, it was a lot of fun to play and I even got a friend of mine into it. We were both very sad about it ending so soon and I still am. I wish I had a game similar to it to play but alas, I doubt there is. RIP my friend 💔
i got 3, fucking THREE, friends to play it. we rushed to get the full game for free when they made that event/promo, and we played a lot.
I remember seeing custom tiles at a shopping center/mall around Seattle during my trip there in November 2016. I remember seeing advertisment for it though I wasn't THAT interested but I do remember thinking it was pretty cool that they extended their marketing like that!
Never heard of this at all....that means even better episodes.
This is the Death of a Game I both looked forward to and dreaded seeing the most. This game was top notch to play.
Oh wow! One of my favourite multiplayer games got an episode! Nice
I'll give Trion this, in a sea of BR, MOBAs and MMOs Atlas Reactor was at least something different and new.
I knew this would come eventually. you have my full, undivided attention. I loved this game.
Absolutely loved this game, but it died very quickly and just barely held on for a while.
Midnight Suns was pretty successful for a turn based strategy game. About a year and a half old now
Time to close the pool- I mean, the case...on Habbo Hotel next time.
I got really into the game during closed beta. Not only I loved the turn based gameplay but I was also good at it so I enjoyed my time greatly.
I always tuned in for the dev streams (even playing some games with them) and when they suddenly dropped the news of the business model change I was devastated. Not because I wasn't gonna buy it but because I (as everyone else) instantly knew the game was too niche for that asking price and it was gonna be DoA. Sadly, we were right. I mean... 30$? Really? It was crazy.
I don't understand why they didn't just go F2P with an optional purchase for unlocking all characters from the start. Maybe the team was too small to make extra money with rare skins as MTX, as the focus was on making new characters?
This one stings. Out of all the games you've talked about (minus maybe Gigantic) this is the one I played the most
Oh i was waiting for this one. This hurted so much, as a lover of tactical games, a team pvp tactical game was a dream come true.
i nearly shed a tear thinking about the hours i sunk into this incomparable gem of a game. it was such a superb game without any competitor in its category.
I love when new NS drops when I'm awake during the day instead of 11pm.
Once again, a game I've never even heard of.
Characters in this game were so good and taunt system was funny. My favorite one was Blackburn's "Guess I'm gonna kill them all by myself" as he launches an airstrike
Man I miss this game. I used to open custom games and set up scenarios to understand on a deep level how everything worked. How cone attacks need 3 vertical tiles of clearance but box attacks only need 2. How you have cover in a 105° area. It's a shame this one never really caught on. I loved the pulp futurism too.
Never heard about this game until today.
Definitely shows the absurd number of live service titles out there.
I still get flashbacks of this game. It trully was what i wanted instead of tatics /wargroove/ fire emblem etc.
So much more dynamic, felt more like a fighting game at times
I found out about this game a few days into its early access, and bought the founder edition for it. I ended up doing a 24hour stream of it that very same day, I. Was. Hooked. I really think AR and the team had what it took to go big, but they didn't end up getting the marketing they needed, and the pay to play tomfoolery took too much wind out of its sails. An absolute tragedy.
Thia game was my life in college. I've been left with a void that no game since has filled
I knew this was coming on here soon but man did I love this game, I got into it late but it was some of the most fun I've had it was so different from what I used to play. I was so hurt when I saw the game was closing down after just buying all the characters.
I only started playing this approximately half q year before it shut down and let me tell you i was devastated.
This game was absolutely incredible. I can't believe no one has ripped off the idea and brought out a clone
phew didn´t think i would see this game here but I guess it´s not surprising.
Met my partner through this game and is generally the way i got more engaged in online communities so this got a special place in my heart.
Thank you for covering this.
Been waiting for this video for a long time. I enjoyed Atlas Reactor and I still think it could work as game. Some people are making a very similar game called Farseer's Domain but it's very early in development.
man I just want this game back
So many games dead and never coming back.
GOD me and my friends had so much fun with this game, we were so sad to see it shut down. Didn't even know Atlas Rogues existed. RIP.
OMG, I used to be so obsessed with this game as a kid! But I remembered it took so long for queue to pop up so I would just watch tv in the meantime.
I played this one! Was devasted to see it gone
FINALLY SOMEONE TALKED ABOUT IT!
I played this one. And i actually quite liked it. This pvp turn strategy thing was a neat little concept, and the characters, all hailing from different corps or factions of sorts were pretty interesting. I remember I liked this mutated centaur-like monster character that had many cone area attacks.
Phaedra :)
There was a tactical turn-based online game called Aerena on Steam that might not be well-known, but it was the game that introduced me to the online TPC concept. It had a unique style and was really fun, offering a gameplay experience somewhat similar to Into the Breach but in a multiplayer setting. It's a real shame that it died, it was my first childhood disappointment due to a multiplayer game shutting down. I really hope there will be another game like it someday, but the niche might just be too small.
It hurt when I heard that Atlas made Trove, younger me is crying rn. I loved Trove when I was younger and couldn’t convince my parents to get me Minecraft
Man this game was so good, unsure if we'll ever see something like it again.... here's hoping!
I discovered this game just before it got shut down. For about 2 weeks I really enjoyed it before it was gone.
The irony of this video coming out the same day as Capes, an x-com like game with superheroes is palpatable. I have already seen players complain over weak powers, no base building or lack of skill tree. If you are releasing a game for a price higher than x-com 2, could you also make it atleast equally as good, and not worse ?
I miss this game so much. It was the best online strat RPG... and it was fairly monetized, just niche sadly.
Oh boy I didn't think there would be a Habbo episode. That one's a keeper.
Oh boy, Habbo Hotel next? That's gonna be a hell of a throwback.
All I ever knew about this game was from what I saw due to Atlas Reactor being on the same launcher as Trove...
Omg i think i remember Dodger talking about this game thinking it sounded cool but then forgot the name and I regret never trying.
The death of Atlas Reactor still hurts nearly a decade later. Shit-tier marketing doomed it to such low exposure. Damn shame.
Extremely fun game with an excellent gameplay loop. The concept was genius and i really wish it had lasted. I'm genuinely surprised no one has tried anything similar since it closed.
Without death of a game, I never know this game existed. That is just sad because this is looks promising.
This one hits hard
I miss this game so much.
I couldn't get this game running on my shitty pc and left a negative review on steam, a developer friended me and helped me change settings to get it working. It meant a lot that he'd go out of his way to help me, sucks to see it's shut down now
I actually played Atlas Reactor a fair bit and got a fair bit of enjoyment out of it. I think I first heard about it through Extra Life, which is also where I first heard about the now defunct MOBA Dawngate, which I also played. I was sad it shut down as it was a very unique game and the turn based nature of the MOBA reminded me of another now defunct turn based MOBA called Arena of Heroes by Sneaky Games*. I never knew about it being acquired by Gamigo.
*Part of what made the turn based nature unique was not only was each side controlling 4 characters at once on a 3 lane map with no fog of war but there was also the option to set up a game where each player could take their turns over the course of several days, then when they leave and come back the game would update to reflect the game state after the opponents move.
Man... this one hurt to watch. I loved this game. I loved the IP. I miss it.
I LOVED this game, but I understand why it couldn't find mass appeal. What an amazing idea and what style too!
As a fan of crpgs I really wish I got to try this game since it looks very unique, I really do think that if a different dev will go for this type of game it will find its niche audience for sure.
Can't believe I've never heard of this game. The art style is cool.
This one hurts a lot. I loved this game :(
Ahh.. these were the days !!!
I remember trying it but being overwhelmed by the UI
Any looks into Shattered Galaxy?
I think I still see Livestreams of that old MMO RTS.
I'll definitely cover it
I remember playing the beta of this one, and it was interesting, and mildly fun (not really my style of game). I did enjoy the characters and humor and art.
This one hurts :(
If anyone asks if there's a game I miss it's this game. There is just nothing else like it.
This game was so good for what it was, great pvp game on chill night's felt more like you were playing chess than a sweaty pvp game. All you had to do was predict the learning curve wasnt steep at all either
Man, if I had ever known this game existed, I totally would have played it. I love turn based strategy and a multiplayer version is intriguing enough to at least try. Can't say I'd have stuck with it or ever paid for the $30 full version, but I really wish I at least could have tried it.
well i clearly lived under a rock i had no clue this game existed back in 2016i played a lot of trion games
Too bad i cant still play this everyday..... Solo ranked was my jam along with my infamous turn 2 Phaedra dash
😂 I was a believer in the turn 2 Phaedra dash
I love this game, it was a godsend for that small niche of players and it's sad they didn't know how to market and monetise it and it ended up like this in Gamigo's hands.
4v4 was great for playing with friends, easy to switch between Battlerite, Atlas Reactor and DotA2/LoL depending on who's available. The 30s simultaneous turns ensured fast-paced matches that would rarely linger on (it still could happen but most of the time games would last around 15-20mn) .
One annoying thing was the launcher, when one of the appeal of the game is to find and complete a match within 30mn it was infuriating when you launched the game with Steam to see a 400Mo update. Being turn-based it also meant you could play with bad internet, at worst you just mess up a turn or two and disconnects are less penalising. But well, on those 330 hours of play, at least 10% are the launcher updating XD
And iirc after the switch to Gamigo disconnects and server hiccups were more frequent and players got less chill about making their turns last to wait for players to log back in and, win or loss, that sucked.
Since it was pure team deathmatch with no creeps or objectives it also meant that individual players had more impact than in other MOBA, accentuating common problems like lack of communication, skill discrepancy within a team, lone wolf players and disconnects. As a niche game, thought, I've had the impression that the community wasn't as toxic as other multiplayer games. There were some duckheads of course, as in every mp game, and I feel bad for new players that had to suffer them.
All in all it was a great game and I wish Trion didn't try to market it for eSports or like a classic MOBA or hero shooter. It still is the only game in its niche, they should have built on that first and let word of mouth do its thing. I'd really like to see that formula come back now that turn-based combat is back to its glory days, I'm sure it would have an easier time building a player base.
If this released today it would pop off
I remember loving this game to death, but also kinda understanding when it shut down; It was great, but also niche as hell. I just wish there was some LAN option so I could whip out the 1v1 mode they introduced near the end to play with friends. Supposedly some fans have been working on a spiritual successor called Farseer's Domain, but I haven't seen or heard anything about it for a couple years.
I'm starting to wonder if the Gamigo logo is more cursed than Blast or LJN. The graveyard of disasters is at least as big as those two...
Loved this game to death... One of kind. The co-op XCOM that i've ever wanted
Ah gamigo.... As soon as I heard that name. I knew it was over for anything that has that name on.
Everything about this game is amazing, except for its lack of success. ...This one hurts.
I still miss Atlas Reactor almost every week. What a wonderful game and beautiful aesthetics. Miss you Phaedra and Rampart
Dont forget Pup and Zuki......😢
Every character had unique and well-made design, personality and abilities. I wasn't sold on the art style at first but the taunts, animations and personality of the characters made me like them all. Even Helio XD
I love it when Nerd covers games I have NEVER heard of.
@@nerdSlayerstudioss seriously man, this game looks like it would've been fun to try but I really saw nothing about it haha
