3:55 .... A bed warming pan with hot coals placed inside used to heat up the mattress to keep the sleeper warm and cozy. The butler's ash holder for disposing of cigarette butts is much smaller and usually about 6" in diameter and a very short handle about 5" long. Then, we have the crumb tray which is about the same size as the butler's ash holder left on the sideboard to clean crumbs off the table with a small brush. 6:42 ... This room was the butler's pantry and would have had shelves along the walls or more cabinetry to store food and pantry items.
Been watching your adventures for about three months now and love every explore. I see at the beginning of these comments that someone said that you should do more research on some of the items like the bed warmer that you found, but I disagree. I really like that this is a true journey, your journey, not some fake know-it-all's journey. That gives your viewers a chance to participate in your explore and I think that is great! Don't change a thing, just be yourself. I think that you are charming.
Love you're videos yours are the best and most professional. Wishing Remon a swift recovery. You may be interested to know that the items in the kitchen are not for collecting ash from the nobility they are actually bed warmers, which the servants would fill with hot coals and then use them to warm up the bed before their employers retired for the night. hi again maureno ,you were almost right about the copper pan next to the old clock..it was filled with hot coals and used as a bed warmer like a hot water bottle
The copper pan on a long handle looks far too big for collecting cigarette ash in. I believe it is a bed warming pan. Hot embers & coals would be put into it & once it was closed up, it would be carried to the bedroom & be put into the bed & rubbed around over the sheets to warm them & reduce any dampness, then taken to the next bed. In big houses a servant might have to take the warming pan to a lot of rooms. It did cause a few fires. Sparks could escape through the small holes.
My Grandma in Nova Scotia still had her bed warming pans in use up until she died in the early 70's. They were very similar to the ones in the castle. Also frequently used with the pans were bricks that were placed on an open fire or wood stove and placed at the foot of the bed at night. They were surprisingly good at keeping the bed warm.
@@JaniceWithTheTarlovCysts Thank you for sharing that. I have used bricks warmed in an aga & as long as you wrap them up well they stay warm for a long time.
U were very brave to explore on your own. Poor Remon. It really wasn't as big on the inside as I thought it would be - could easily be restored (with bathrooms!). Need a rare book dealer to look at books - such a shame to see them left to decay. Excellent as usual. stay safe.
I have watched some of your videos guys. May you always be safe and secured. Earlier, you filmed a dilapidating mansion in a remote place. I am sure you always have your complete first aid kits that includes antidotes for bites and for any untoward incidents or accidents. Stay safe always! I love your videos/ niche. Prayers and best wishes from California to Remon. Hope you have a quick recovery. We see the sacrifices you all make to bring us these amazing videos! Please let us know how Remon is doing over the next days.
Enjoyed this video sooooooo much! All the fireplaces, the stonework, the beautiful woodwork and furniture. So sorry about Ramon and hope he's recovering nicely. He missed an awesome explore!
The books seem to be part of the character of the castle. Probably some generations of intellectuals, love for knowledge, great respect for books, the written word. Otherwise, the books would have been either trashed or destroyed.
Prayers for your buddy, Remon, prayers that he will recover and be back on the road with you again soon. I love going into all these wonderful magnificent places with you guys. Unfortunately, they will just be left to ruin as it seems no one is interested in at least trying to check on them. It just breaks my heart to know that somewhere out there is descendents and ancestors of the people that just dont know they are gone. And that they left such a beautiful place. This was, as always, a wonderful journey into someones once beautiful home.
I'm pretty sure that long pan thing that you called an ash collector is actually a bed warmer. The servant would put a few of the dying coals from the fire place into that pan, and it would warm the pan up just enough to act like an iron. Then the servant would warm the beds with it. They had fancy ash trays for collecting ashes, and ashes from cigars and cigarettes don't accumulate predictably nor slowly enough to make collecting them by hand a reasonable solution.
Just want to let you know that those NeckGator masks you're wearing are not effective. With the black mold, you really need the N95 mask or something with triple filter.
Agreed, you can develop upper respiratory problems which will stay with you for your entire life and perhaps put you on an oxygen tank when you are older.
Yes, there many type of invisible mold there. Those abandoned mantions are too dangerous. Please be careful getting in there. Use a full biomedical equipment.

Brass thing with the pierced lid is a bed warmer, you would put warm coals in the brass pan and carry it by the handle to a bed, lift the covers and warm the bed by moving it around on the fitted sheet, between the covers, so the cold bed would be warm when you got in. Something seen quite often in the old days before heated bedrooms, most of the time the big fireplace or cookstove downstairs was the only source of heat for homeowners. Once you got into bed your body would keep the bed halfway warm. I work at a history museum, hope this info helps. Hope Remon is ok and not hurt seriously. Y'all be careful from Kentucky USA.

Just an FYI, when you were exploring the kitchen of this castle you were telling a story about the copper long handled "pan looking" article hanging on the wall; you described it as holding ashes. It is called a bed warmer and true the servants filled it with hot coals from the fireplace and would warm the nobility's beds before they climbed into them. A couple and their three children bought the Château d'Asnières, in Saumur, in Cizay-la-Madeleine last December. They are currently appearing in the M6 show: “The castle of my dreams”. Once upon a time there was Carole and Yann. Previously, she worked in real estate, while he was a public works worker. And one day, the couple decided to change their lives to buy the castle of their dreams. This has been done since December 1st. Accompanied by their three children, Carole and Yann became the happy owners of the Château d'Asnières, in Saumur, in Cizay-la-Madeleine.
I like the beams in the kitchen. The drapes on doorways held the heat in the room when closed. I don't think I've ever seen mushrooms growing inside an abandoned home. Another epic video!!!!
Wouldn’t it be great if you brought along a history or antique expert in these buildings with you!!!! Wishful thinking I’m sure but oh how I would be even more obsessed to watch!
Have you ever looked for secret passageways behind the fireplaces in these castles? I heard the servants added wood from behind through a door in the back as they never had stacks of firewood in those rooms.
Great videos as always! Always am so amazed how all the beds are actually made in these places.... like isn’t there one owner who just forgot to make the bed 🛌
I am so sorry to hear that Remon was hurt. Sending love and hugs from Florida. Keeping you both in my prayers. Thank you for yet another beautiful video. You both do such wonderful work showing us all these beauty's.
Omg huge huge correction. In beginning, the "ash pan" hanging on the wall. That was NOT for collecting cigarette ashes!! At night the servants put coals and ash in it, from the FIREPLACE, and took it to put between blankets in masters bed to warm the bed for them at bedtime. It is a BED heating pan.
An amazing place and a wonderful explore. The old radio with the closing doors is fantastic. I'm pretty sure that it's a Symphonie, manufactured in Paris by Schneider circa 1948. Anyway great upload. 👍🏻👍🏻
What a beautiful castle! I had a dollhouse when younger that had a miniature french kitchen. This kitchen is remarkable. I hope reamon is okay and heals up soon.
Great video, fascinating explore. Make sure Remon see’s a doctor. Getting cut by that rusty, dirty old metal is nothing to ignore. I hope this message reaches you both in fine health!
FYI - Those copper pans hanging in the first room (kitchen) are for warming beds! Theyre called "warming pans". They put coals inside, slipped them between the sheets to warm up the beds before getting inside. Their mattresses were likely filled with wool, straw, or animal hair.
3:55 .... A bed warming pan with hot coals placed inside used to heat up the mattress to keep the sleeper warm and cozy.
Accompanied by their three children, Carole and Yann became the happy owners of the Château d'Asnières, in Saumur, in Cizay-la-Madeleine.
absolutely beautiful castle...get well Remon..
I hope Remon gets the medical attention that he needs. Wow... that castle is pretty cool. Cinderella for sure.. take care Maureno
Hello explomo!so many books 😢,beautiful castle..
Hope Remon is all right. Safety first!
Much love and well wishes for your injury! Take care and heal quickly! Great job Merino! Love from America!
Wishing Remon well. Hugs from Canada my friends!
I like the beams in the kitchen. The drapes on doorways held the heat in the room when closed. I don't think I've ever seen mushrooms growing inside an abandoned home. Another epic video!!!!
Superbe visite ,merci beaucoup et bravo pour le respect en ces lieux , 👍
Wouldn’t it be great if you brought along a history or antique expert in these buildings with you!!!! Wishful thinking I’m sure but oh how I would be even more obsessed to watch!
Have you ever looked for secret passageways behind the fireplaces in these castles? I heard the servants added wood from behind through a door in the back as they never had stacks of firewood in those rooms.
The kitchen looks as though Cinderella would be at home there👸
Great videos as always! Always am so amazed how all the beds are actually made in these places.... like isn’t there one owner who just forgot to make the bed 🛌
Hope Remons recovery is speedy, lots of love 💜
Praying for Remon! Beautiful castle! Thanks for sharing and all of your hard work! You guys are so appreciated .

Thanks for sharing. Great video. Hopefully Remon is recovering from is injury.
FYI - Those copper pans hanging in the first room (kitchen) are for warming beds! Theyre called "warming pans". They put coals inside, slipped them between the sheets to warm up the beds before getting inside. Their mattresses were likely filled with wool, straw, or animal hair.
That’s exactly what they are.
