  • This particular project used 1/2" pvc electrical conduit. To be clear, I drilled a hole in the side of the fitting and pvc welded the airline tee in place. Something like this would work perfect on a 10-20 gallon tank with a mat filter.

    Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking to do something with an "Eductor" to use the velocity of the compressed air to atomize the airstream into the water column and contribute its velocity to the water flow.

    if you have an under gravel filter and can come up with a way to attach one of these to it, that would be cool to see, unfortunately this design works best with hamburg mat filters, and won't work very well for your standard sponge filter

    You made it wrong! You have to seal the end to create a compressed chamber so the air is pressed thrue the small holes. As it is now air just escapes from the bottom...

    It fucking worked! Now time to figure out my filter

    Nice try, but this isn't a Jet lift. You need to seal the bottom of the two pipes with an o'ring to create an air chamber. Google czech airlift.

    Just FYI: That's conduit, not regular PVC pipe. The deeper you are able to place the bottom of the conduit...the higher it will lift water above your fill line. I like your idea to eliminate blockage of the pipe. Good stuff, thanks for sharing!

    Smaller bubles will give you a better result. So if you make the internal holes as small as possible, you will get a much better flow with the same amount of air pumped in to the air lift. As a bonus, the tiny bubbles only make a very small amount of noise, and your air lift will run almost silent.

      But a smaller holes causing more resistance of the air flow.. then less bubbles too

    under gravel filters use the substrate as a filter media, so you wouldn't need a sponge, just figure out how to attach the uplift tube and you're all set. Typically an under gravel filter isn't enough, those fish sound like they make some heavy waste, so i would keep the hang on back filters running as well.

    how will you make it lift higher?

      deeper = higher
      more air flow = higher

      And don't use durved pipes or hoses or the water can fall back. Also smaller diameters will help the water go higher. Make the holes as tiny as you can all around the pipe and let enough space in the bottom to allow the flow of the water. If you touch the pipe in the bottom of the tank it will hinder the water flow.

    Hi everyone. I’m planning to build my own air lift pump to clean the sand from the bottom of my water fountain. There are 20m depth to water level and I need some advices about the size of pipe which can be used and also i need to know if my compressor 100L with 8 bar is enough. Thank you

      put an air hose with an air stone connected to your pump in the bottom of your fountain and see if the pump has pressure enough to pump air this deep. If so it will work. Search "organic pool" here on youtube. The guy build this air lifts all the time and you can compare the pipes diameters he uses.

    I tried this with a smaller diameter pipe and it didn't work all that well. I'm going to try again with a similar size to yours to see if it works better. I might have drilled too many holes or something but it acted just like a normal airlift filter and bubbled out noisily but without much flow.

      drill bits will be too large, try heating the smallest diameter pin you have and make as many holes as possible

    It´s build wrong, the chaimber has to be sealed in the bottom for it to be able to force the water thrue the tiny holes. You see in the video that the water output is not even and is very slow.

      I use pvc about 1/3 size (for cable installation) and air pump 5 watt. When I put it into water in 60 cm deep, it could lift water up to 20 cm from water surface...
