It's time to stop dragging mud from our #pathway onto the deck and into the house. Building up this 40 foot run along the south side of our yard was something we had been putting off due to the cost of concrete and or pavers.
The idea of building a wood #walkway never really crossed my mind until recently when I watched a few videos online. The warm feeling of a wood pathway some how resonated with me in this area of the yard. I had always had my heart set on concrete or pavers but they can be a bit dull looking.
I know a wood pathway won't last as long as concrete but on this side of the house it will be sheltered from a lot of the seasonal elements. My prediction is it should last about 10 years and who knows where we will be at that point in life. If we are still in this house then I guess Ill redo it at that time.

We all realistically have budgets. Makes the DIY even better. It looks great!
Yes your right, thanks for the visit
I'm actually working on the same project with the same exact measurements. I have a big mud problem in this area where grass want grow.
Because this area slopes down to the street in going to use cement blocks to control the height while keeping the treated wood out of the water.
Thanks for the video.
Appreciate you taking the time to watch the video.
Sounds like a good idea using the blocks, best of luck, I hope it turns out awesome.
Turned out way nice! I'm glad to see that shit doesn't just happen to me!!
lol, shit happens more often then not on every project I tackle. Thanks for the visit.
Great job . . . from a rain soaked alley to a nice finished garden path . . . next Spring you might add a few dwarf shrubs to soak up any surplus water . . . super job!
Hey thanks so much and great idea on the dwarf shrubs. Not sure if you had a chance to watch my update video to this job but it’s definitely worth the watch time, also a big improvement. Cheers my friend
Came out great
Thanks, lot of work but no more mud lol
I like your wheelbarrow
What, you mean ol’ rusty, sadly he didn’t make it to the next project.
RIP Rusty
I'm glad I found this.
Cheers my friend
Interesting indeed. I have a side of a house that I need to do something with eventually.
This looks like a great option!
Thanks, it turned out okay but, will it last? have to wait and see.
@@ThatFixItGuy Thank you, it was definitely less expensive than the concrete I was planning.
Lol the wheel barrel!
Thanks man
That was a beautifully executed plan. Love your dog, man.
Thank you, turned out better than the first attempt. Tango now runs it, full speed, he is much happier now that he doesn't have to tip toe down it.
Just came across ur vid, exactly wut I was looking for, will be using ur exact method
That’s awesome, there is an update video to that pathway build you might want to view before starting. You can find it on our channel. Thanks for watching
Dude so sorry you fell. I fall too🤗
Looks great .. I'm going to try this with a few tweakes of my own ..appreciate the video and the inspiration 👍
Thanks for the kind words. It turned out awesome however I did do an update to that project. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, it’s worth watching before you start yours.
An interesting idea ,one sure to beat slugging in the mud and to really help drainage You are honest you do seem to make things just a little harder than they could be I think I would begin by shooting a line with a transit I understand some have limited tools ,so perhaps run a string line and dig the trough BEFORE laying down the tracks I understand the second time is usually easier I would also use the wood treatment as someone else mentioned before laying down your walk boards Much easier chore sitting on saw horses and then you can treat top bottom and edges really well I might just soak them in a pan get it done quick and easy But here around my place I find that water seal to be of little use deterring termites or rot Good move NOT using treated lumber on the walk way it has such a tenancy to bow up and check and bow so bad And I would countersink and plug my screw holes with buttons that would give a great look There was a "non organic " decking product advertised as I was watching that might work great Great job you did at solving a problem One might ask if I have so many ideas ,why not make my own post ....Hey I just build things with my hands Im not smart enough to work a camera Ohhh nest time I would dern sure take that gate down to cut the bottom and perhaps top off
Hey Harvey thanks for the visit any taking the time to watch the video. You definitely touched on many areas where I could have sped up the time for this project and also some great tips for improvement. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment. Appreciate it my friend.
Sorry dude, but I did laugh when you fell the second time into the window well, I feel like I've done that before. Good idea and great video.
I laughed too, that was a tough day. Glad I could be the focus of your laughter.
Turned out beautifully. It's perfect for an area I've been trying to figure out what to do with. Thanks. good video.
Thanks so much, I’m glad to hear it helped. Cheers my friend
That was a very entertaining to watch😀 , thanks for sharing❣ I will be doing this in my backyard
Thanks, it was a fun project and i love the floating walkway look. I did an improvement update video to this project, you might want to take time and watch prior to starting yours.
Cheers
Omg! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That is my life. I can stop laughing!
I feel your pain. But it is a fabulous walk way.
I'm glad to know I'm not alone. Cheers!
Love your dedication… and It’s beautiful! Sometimes I get obsessed with a project… work till I drop!
It comes with the DNA 🧬… 😮😊🙏🏼❤️🩹🌷
So true lol, thanks for watching
So clumsy. You dropped down on your knees while washing your wooden pavements. I was shock and it makes me laugh a bit. Nice video very informative.😊😱🤪👍🏻🤝
I actually fell in the window well hole, it was kinda funny though. Thanks for watching.
I love this idea! I think you did a great job! I really like the look!
Thank you, lot of effort but we’ll worth it
Appreciate you
This looks great!
Thanks, it was a bit of a pain to do but we really like it
Next time treat the wood prior to installment would make it easier on your back.
😂 Thanks For the vedio I'm gna do this in my garden 💪
Awesome, you’ll love it
i've got a mud trail along my back fence and have been struggling to some up with a solution that will stand up to a 70 lb dog running up and down it several times a day. This might be it. I hope you were ok at the end of the day. We've all done it.
Thanks, it was definitely a hard day but it’s all good. We couldn’t be happier with the walkway however we did do an update to it which really improved it. If you haven’t already watched the updated video, you can find it on our channel. All the best.
Very pretty!🥰 I like the updated version, too, which made it better for your dog. The wood against the gravel is a nice contrast. That was a lot of work though lol
Thank you, yes a lot of work but definitely an improvement in the space
Plus our dog is much happier
"Next time I'm taking the gate off!"
Lol, no you won't!
Your right, no I won’t
Looooooove it!
Thank you, I’m super happy the way it turned out. Thanks for the visit
Great job!
Thank you
Very nice
Thank you
Looks fantastic bro !
Thanks brother, appreciate it
Great idea but I'd worry about the 4 X 2 getting slippery,
I was worried a bit too but actually, it’s not bad at all.
I don’t like introducing a lot of rocks around a garden, but I do like the boardwalk. Can you suggest a different base pad for the wood beams?
All I could suggest would be to use composite in place of wood beams, a bit more expensive but would last longer
Did you mention how deep your road crush ended up being (approx, obviously it varied)?
This turned out great exactly what I need to do - quick question - how wide are the 2x6 steps?
Hey thanks, and thanks for the visit. The 2x6 are 20” and the 2x4s are 24”
@@DIYBuilt got it - thanks for the quick reply- I really appreciate it
Your soil looks good from here. Where is your cement like clay?
It’s there, just deeper down.
How did u get rid of the grass
There never was grass installed there, it was always just dirt. Thanks for the visit.
Ooo thanks for the reply I have a bout the same area and thinking about doing this but don't want the grass to grow threw
@@princejoshua6862 if I were you and didn’t want to pull the grass, I would use a pesticide like killEx or something like that and then cover the are with a black landscaping plastic. Just my thoughts
Hey buddy, did you sand the wood first before staining/sealing .???
I’m asking cause Id like to know if I should sand before sealing n staining but don’t want to if I don’t have to.!! I’m doing a walkway just like yours minus the rock.!!
No I didn’t sand it. I didn’t see the point being exterior and just a walkway.
How’d this hold up?
So far so good
Maybe it would be easier to protect before installing, your knee would tank you.
That should’ve been at the top of the list
any issues with termites
No, we don’t have termites where we are
Too much space between boards, I think.
There is a updated video which addresses the spaces on my channel
Thanks for watching
Doesn't the wood bend by rain?
Oddly enough, no it doesn’t. It was a treated wood
@DIYBuilt please guide me how to treat my untreated wooden planks. They are 1 innch thick and 1.5 foot in length vs 6 inch width. I brought varnish as well but the plank have a rough surface so i cant coat them properly. What should i do to let my pathway last
I always use gloves when digging in dirt.
????
should have gotten white gravel, you tightass
Ya I know, it would’ve looked way better
No Weed barrior ... Uh Oh
You could be right, I figured, we only get about 3 good months of summer and with 5” of rock in place, I should only get the odd one popping up and I can take care of that as needed. Thanks for the visit. Cheers
Well done. Don't exert yourself so much. Next time hire a worker to help you.
Thanks, I agree, I need more help sometimes. Cheers my friend.
knee pads
That would be a good idea
