Watching static and test patterns on a crappy b&w TV while listening to 80s electronic music from an AM radio is a truly *a e s t h e t i c* experience

I just watched this after about a year and a half since it was posted. I enjoyed both parts one and two very much as I currently have a Zenith restoration project under way. You have opened up my understanding of how the circuitry works. I hope that 1956 found a great home.... Shango, you are a master. Thank you for all of the time you put into making this video.

One of my first sets I ever had was a slightly later 14" version of that set. It was a trash pick when a neighbor bought a new set and just tossed it so I grabbed it. It still had a excellent bright sharp picture. I used it till I saved my berry picking money one summer and bought a used 69 23" chroma color set used in 74 for 115 bucks. It was the first color set we had and I put in my tiny bedroom. I later started rebuilding and selling used sets and Zenith was my favorite, if the crt was good they almost always showed a great picture, even better with the newer V high brightness phosphor tubes. It's a old video now but got my attention when I saw that set, thanks. I saved that set for years and I think it finally got donated when I finally moved out. I still have boxes of tube and some test equipment and parts.

Damn, I need to find a UK version of you. I've realised just how much I miss old TVs like this. It's amazing how subtle changes in technology and the world around us really makes a huge difference after a while. I was just as happy, likely happier, with my old Ferguson TX RGB 14" 80s television than with any of the HDTVs knocking about now. Our childhoods should be preserved! I want at least a room full of my childhood like this. I've got the games consoles, I just need me an old TV again. ;) I'm no tech expert but I really enjoy watching these. Great vid!

Yes Shango, in my email to you from Monday night I made a mistake on Your RCA floor model it's the CTC 28 Chass You have 3 parts to & that one Set I done lots of repairs to & like i say I had one for 6 years in the 1980s. When I got my CTC 28 floor model TV the color was just great & when it started to get darker I found a brighter in the Set & the CRT was rejuvenated before I got it & it was done again after I had it but after 5 years the CRT was to dead. Today up here in my area there is none of them things around any more. I wish I could get one some how with a good CRT. I am in the same Boat you are in, I have My Apartment so full of the Electronics I love & I have no room to take on any thing more. I have to say from playing all of your videos You are the most smartest Man in this country. You fix things a little different But you are so much more smarter then any of the TV repair Men I have worked with over the years. And I have worked with lots of other TV repair People & Radio station engineers over the 1980s & 1990s. I find it increadable you can repair the flyback in old TVs after they start smoking & stuff. The TV repair men I worked with would just try & replace the flyback in them or just tell the owner is shot & beon repair. And You work on Cars & most of all the newer Cars with the securtity system in them new Cars. Boy I wish I could have a visit with you on the Phone. I wish i could meet you someday, I would book a flight to come out & see you & your TVs you have fixed up & got them to work & look brand new. You are so lucky to be in LA & fined things like that Conn Orgen & get free speakers & all the parts You could ever want. Up here in north east MN We never see the kind of stuff you have got from the curb & streets of LA. We have had some newer CTR TVs out side like 5 years ago for a while but with in a day or two someone will brake the CTR & the Trash man do not take that stuff up here. People get fines for trying to dispose a TV in the dumpster up north here. your lucky you can still toss that stuff by your loco trash pike up. Here We have to hull that stuff to the land fill. You get these nice astate sales to & all the great nice olld radios you get to buy & so cheep. We never get sales like that up here. Take care & I pray We can hook up. Sadly today every TV & Electronics shop has gone out of Business including Me with Jerry's VCR & TV service. again My email is Soundmaster404@gamil.com And my Phone Number is 218-290-8458. take care. Jerry

I listened to “Disco Saturday Night” every Saturday from 10 PM until 3 AM early Sunday morning during the wee hours playing disco from the good old Studio 54, and the days of WKTU’s “Disco 92” and WBS where Frankie Crocker was at the top of its game.

Good resurrection of the vertical deflection, with a bright, stable picture too. No obvious cloudiness or smearing that I could see - not bad considering how long it had been left out in the harsh desert conditions for so many years. It's a keeper.
The 6AX4 horizontal damper - interesting that it was the second tube to fail while the set was running (arcing and flashing). A royal pain in the ass when it happened since you were still testing the TV at that point.

Agreed, however, in this case, the set was outside, so the caps likely got exposed to "the elements", and being outside can accelerate the damage to these caps. Doesn't happen in all cases, but I have seen it happen. Good to see you on this channel as well, Brad!

"From here to eternity" a hit and breakthrough synth.

Well, the way music is going these days, you my get a strike for 1khz tone, and squelches and squeals.
Considering what that set has been through, to see it in 2018, damn.

I just got into restoring old TV's and managed to get one working. Its an RCA Victor 730TV1. I did a bunch of work to it including putting a new 5u4g low voltage tube in. I've noticed that if the TV is not warm and I power it on theres a hum (not from the speaker) for a second then its fine. Also the 5u4g has a white glow on the top plate during that hum. I want to make sure if this is normal. Maybe energy is generating before the tubes have a chance to heat up?

I wonder how well a 6339 will work as a damper. It's a little directly heated HV diode equivalent to the larger 3B29, rated 53mA at 16kV with a 6.3v heater. Of course it would have to be put in a box and clamped to a heatsink since it has an external anode.

8.5 meg pot with a 2.5 meg stop. A 5 meg pot in series with a 2.2 meg ohm resistor might be close enough. A 10 meg pot would work, but be effective over about half it's range. You could put a 12 meg in parallel with the 10 meg pot and that would get real close, with the 2.2 meg in series. (not really a pot, but a reostat since only two leads are used.)
When you were thumping on that damper tube, I was waiting for it to blow up.

Nice job on this busted Zenith B&W TV set. And the song you're hearing at 11:55 is "The Chase" by Sergio Moroder. The song was featured in "Turkish Superman" which was a horrible adaptation of "Superman". In addition to this song, it also had the "James Bond" theme thrown in which were both stolen and put it in "Turkish Superman". Same as with "Turkish Star Wars" where the music was stolen from the "Indiana Jones" franchise along with the footage which was stolen from "Star Wars: A New Hope" where they put it in the movie.
