Back then, whenever i saw the animation changed for an episode, i knew it was gonna be a good episode.
Not really, there’s a perfect balance here. Unlike a certain… painful adaptation where design was thrown out the window.
I remember being a kid when this episode came out and everyone in class trying to do the chidori and the rasengan and then clashing against each other like idiots.

The animation shifts when the god tier animators come out to play for big fights. There's a whole history to this animation style. It's very uniquely tied to one dude and he inspired a lot of future artists with it. I wish they'd release the damn 20th Anniversary Remaster of Naruto already. This is making me want to watch the series again.

Yea I know we are blessed with this generation of animation now but seeing this during middle school was peak animation. The studio always know how to make the taijustsu fights amazing!
They hired matsumato norio for this episode he is famous for fight choreography for anime because he love kungfu movie, many of recent animator trying to mimic his works but still doesn't look this smooth
This animation is a technique used to show an idea of a lot of speed and a lot of strength. This technique is used in Shippuden in one of the best fights in the entire anime. However, most people who watched it didn't like this technique and ridiculed it and made jokes. It's really a shame.

I know y'all said you were already in Shippuden, but there are some filler in between that I think you'd like.
Specifically if you want to see more focus on some of the side characters.
There's a few episodes focusing on Hinata crafting a new jutsu, one about Rock Lee (the curry of life), and just a handful of others.
Maybe not react to the episodes (which would disrupt the flow of your scheduling), but for you two to watch in private, maybe.
this episode was made by one person, it took him around 6 months or a year, i don't remember exactly, but he was told to go nuts with it and he was the only one (after kishimoto of course) who know about the fight and the outcome of it since it wasn't yet in the manga, he did all the crazy episodes that involve a lot of background destruction that's why the character design look weird, you might also see his work in MOB 100
No episode is made by one person. He didn't even solo key animate this episode. There were 4 others. Only one man solo key animated a full episode with no flashbacks, and that was Masahiko Murata for eps 455 and 495 of Shippuden.
@@ItsKNL of course there is credits to other key animators since there are other scenes in the episode, but the fight itself (the action part) is all done by him, his name is Norio Matsumoto, he's one of the best animators specialised in choreography animation, he also did episode 30, 48, 71 (naruto) also from Naruto Shippuden 85, 123 and of course the famous episode 167 with its controversy, i don't know where you got your info, but i'm pretty sure of what i'm saying since i watched it on TV when it was airing and they showed some kind of behind the scenes thing weeks later about that, he showed the scenes he made and the process behind it, and like i said what the director told him and how he asked kishimoto about what will happen, i remember because they did something similar years later after he did that "ep167" and said he didn't understand the controversy even though he did the same thing with the best episodes of the series, why would they blame him alone then

But he never animated an episode of Naruto by himself. 133 Featured Key Animation from Hirofumi Suzuki, Atsushi Wakabayashi, Atsuko Inoue, and Tokuyuki Matsutake as well. Also Shippuden 167 wasn't controversial for Norio's part, but the other two animators (Shingo Yamashita and Kenichi Kutsuna). Two of people who entered the industry after seeing his work on episode Naruto 30 along with many others.
@@ItsKNL this is a misunderstanding, i think my comment lost a line where i said "i don't remember exactly i'm not sure if he did all the episode", i think when i was typing in my keyboard i thought i wrote that but now when i read it again it's missing, so again he didn't do the whole episode, the word at the time was that he did the fight scene and it took him a year or something because he was doing other projects, but the point is he made the whole fight or key parts (if you want the most memorable parts) and they added other things to get an episode of course, i remember very well they showed how he designed the choreography and how he uses martial art movies style as his inspiration, they showed the fight he did without what they added but speed up and they didn't say how long it was

Still one of the best anime fights of all times. The main animator was Norio Matsumoto, he has animated this and many others crazy fights in Naruto franchise, you already saw Rock Lee vs Gaara and some more GOAT level fights are also made by him in Shippuden, you'll see them too. He is a legend.
You'll see in these types of fights, they sacrificed drawing details (drawing quality) but they put most of the effort in the choreography (movement)... So the characters and environment can look ugly but the damn fight choreography is amazing. And don't forget that this was a weekly anime.
It’s just a stylistic choice. It makes the animation look more fluid and when they sacrifice some detail they can spend more time drawing more frames. They’ve done it later in the show as well even when they weren’t limited by time constraints and other shows have done it as well. It doesn’t have much to do with it being weekly, it just arguably makes fights look more fluid and better cause the attention is on the characters at all times. Other anime do it too and they aren’t limited by time constraints like Naruto was.
Norio did this episode long before chapter in manga were published, studios hired him to do this episode and nobody know except masashi and his team how the fight goes
Favorite UA-cam’r’s, atm! That scene when Naruto says “my friend” one of the greatest fight quotes, I’ve seen it so many times it was great seeing you guys see it for first time

Just one small suggestion, look at it as if sukuna is derived from nine tailed fox and not nine tailed fox from sukuna

I didn't see it in the comments, so the reason the animation is different this episode is because the studio started contracting out special freelance animators. I think all of them wer japanese for the original naruto, but I know they contracted the best of the best worldwide for shippuden. The needed animators who specialized in extreme movement while staying on schedule with the rest oft the team. This actually ended up being very good for the animation industry because it led to improved working conditions in the anime industry. It was wfh before COVID, and artists being ather eccentric on the whole it was healthy to have the option. It led to a lot of intermingling of studios' animators as well, and better pay ultimately.
Anyway, this episode specifically was the genesis of modern day anime produciton.

Yeah with the animation in this episode they went for a more fluid look, more frames of animation but they go for a more simplistic drawing style. It gives the animation more dynamic flow but they sacrifice detail.

idk why it took me so long to realize but im pretty sure when the animation changes its got quite a bit of cgi mixed in. Pretty interesting. Also i truly believe the nine tails is the only reason why he survived FALLING HEAD FIRST OFF A CLIFF

The last fillers where Gaara is kidnapped are so cool, it's a shame you didn't watch them. It's as if it were retribution from the leaf to the sand.

you should realize that this this is a more than 15 years back anime. the animation, the story, the characters were way way advanced than any other anime of that time. the CURRENT top level anime that you like so very much and say them like oh it's like sukuna, oh it's like gojo... are ALL inspired from the characters and story of this anime
Animation yes but i disagree with story or character. Long before naruto, there's plenty anime that has better story and character.
For example
- gundam wing is considered Best gundam along side gundam seed destiny
- Evangelion did with mecha although i never watch it, i still prefer the vision of escaflowne
- legend of galactic hero, not the remake one but the OG from 80's
- Great Teacher Onizuka
- monster, this one is not for action fans 😂
- serial experiment lain

The animation shift is neat, but it also adds weird moments where suddenly nobody takes damage while being kicked around the lake. Like, in the chunin exams Naruto punched the genjutsu kid so hard he sent the three of them flying and they stayed down, but here Sasuke takes I dunno how many hits to the face and gut and he doesn't show it at all.
The konoha 13 parents all fought in the 3rd great shinobi world war. Konoha 13 are all the ninja in Naruto and sauske’s class
Less detail makes animating more frames easier.
The difference between Sakuna and the Nine-Tails is that Sakuna gives absolutely zero fucks about Yuji and actively roots against him. The nine-tails on the other hand at the very least finds entertainment in him.

One day ya'll might want to watch these fights, like this one and Haku's, in the English Dub. Far better way of how they say things. This is like olden type of diction. English dub is like modern way of talking.
