Sigils are actually an ancient Iranian technique that men or wisdom teachers in ancient Iran did under the name of magi or moghan. (The word Magic comes from the ancient Iranian word maghi or moghan. Also, the word wizard comes from the word wise man.)
If you want your spells to have the best power and function, they first depend on your will power. And then try to use their original languages such as Avesta or ancient Iranian languages such as Pahlavi.
Also, the signs and symbols are ancient and prehistoric Persian Sigils that work best and they are unique!
You should also learn that the strength and will of a magician comes from being in harmony with the main force of the universe. So you have to unite your will with the universe! If you're calling yourself a "baby witch" don't work with sigil. This is far too advanced. You need to protect yourself instead. Especially with the way the energy is lately in this timeline. You could lock yourself into something you don't want to be attached to....

Before there was writing, what would have replaced sigils? Curious, because magic is as old as humanity, so what other signs before the written word was there?

Perhaps the intent is more important than the form of the intent. In a time before written language I imagine it was based on the pictogram of the concept of the intent, so they may have appeared similar to those based on letters. People have been drawing images since time immemorial, and letters are pictures of a shared idea, A is for A, B for B etc.
