    I hope you don’t take this offensively, seriously, I mean that… I have sold a lot of paintings… I used to say the exact same thing I didn’t want to spend my time drawing when I could be painting. And I did that for years. But about a year ago, I started drawing everything and my painting skills have changed to. I used to say that my favorite part of, the process was the painting, but I think that’s because I only really traced most of my paintings. I’m now absolutely love the drawing part. It really challenges my brain. And I should also state that I am now retired and just keep a daily sketchbook. Enjoy your day!

      No offense at all. It’s wonderful that after years of painting, you learned to draw and love it. One of my personal projects this year is to improve my drawing skills. My motivation is to learn ink & wash style of watercolor. I think drawing scares a lot of people and keeps them from exploring their creativity. I hope starting with tracing helps more people unlock their creativity and try new things.

      I think that both points are valid.
      As an ultra beginner ‘artist’, I think tracing is a good way to begin to learn watercolour painting, in the same way that you’d give a child a colouring book with crayons. No, they won’t learn to draw, but that can come later. I find having only one step to complete (wetting my paints) before I start painting makes it a lot less intimidating. When I ‘draw’ (copy by hand from a learn to draw book), it’s often several days or sometimes even weeks before I paint the image.
      I’ve also heard that the best way to learn how to improve your watercolour painting skills is by drawing, which makes a lot of sense as you’re figuring our proportions, values etc., prior to filling it in with watercolour paints.
      Personally, right now, I’m just trying to figure out the difference between warm and cool watercolour paints, especially the primaries! 😊

      Great points. I feel the same way about just getting into the painting. I am working on my drawing skills in parallel. For now, I’m more comfortable with a brush in my hand 😊
      Color is tricky. If you haven’t seen it yet, this video might help with the cool and warm primaries: ua-cam.com/video/sg0ynNwSd7o/v-deo.htmlsi=7cBF9CI3zEh-5uMI

    You have saved my sanity! Yesterday was another day of frustration to the max, while completing a drawing for a portrait watercolor. I said to myself, “I’ve GOT to find another way”!
    And then during my morning iPhone trolling, you magically appeared!
    Many thanks for your clear, calm instructions and generosity in freely sharing your knowledge with all of us.
    I’ve been a “purist” about doing my own drawings, but at the age of 81, it’s time to stop stressing and enjoy painting!
    Thanks again!❤

    I like that you share this technique, I think that drawing is an amazing skill and very important as we create our own style. That being said tracing is very helpful when learning watercolor painting, even tracing your own drawings so you’re able to paint your own work without the worry of messing it up. Nothing is wrong with tracing as you’re learning a new skill. Thanks for this video.

    Keep in mind.. that all these "taps and gestures" are customizable.. so you can't just say "tab 2 fingers is how you undo".. because your 2 finger tap isn't the same as my 2 finger tap if it has been changed. Better to say the default gestures are.... 2 fingers to tap.

    Thanks SO much Jackie for sharing this!! What would you suggest if I wanted the image to be much larger for a larger canvas??? Is there a change for Procreate or would it be one of the free ones??

    • @JackieHernandezWatercolor
      @JackieHernandezWatercolor  28 днів тому

      You can create a custom canvas size in Procreate. After you tap the plus to add a canvas, tap the overlapping black rectangles in the upper right corner. Then you can set a custom size. After exporting the file, you can print it on multiple pieces of paper or have a printer print it on larger paper. Another option is to project the finished drawing onto your paint surface.

    I don’t have my iPad handy right now. I’m just wondering why the tracing layer isn’t moving independently of the photo layer, causing it to not connect to the photo. Maybe I missed something.

    • @JackieHernandezWatercolor
      @JackieHernandezWatercolor  Місяць тому

      If you don’t have a layer selected with the arrow tool, then everything on the canvas moves together. You can rotate and zoom the canvas and everything stays together. If you selected the tracing layer and tapped the arrow in the upper left, then that layer would have a bounding box and you could move it separately. Hope that helps.

    Really great tutorial, thank you. What if you want to scale an image to a much larger piece of WC paper. Do you have any recommendations for that? I have seen a few artists use projectors - have you tried this and do you have any recommendations?

    • @JackieHernandezWatercolor
      @JackieHernandezWatercolor  Місяць тому +1

      You’re welcome. In Procreate you can create a custom canvas size. After tapping + to add a canvas, select the overlapping black rectangles in the upper right corner. Then you can set the size to match your painting. You could print the larger image at a print shop. I think there’s also a way to print a large image tiled on regular size paper, which you could tape together.

I dis a little checking and I posted above and am waiting to see what she gives as an answer...but I saw that one of the top rated apps that was said to be very very similar to ProCreate is an app called HiPaint. I am reading reviews and watching videos on it now. Don't like that it collects data from me, but it is a free app so that's why they do it. • @JackieHernandezWatercolor
      @JackieHernandezWatercolor  Місяць тому

      If you plan to use it for art and editing, I would recommend getting the larger screen size. You can save $ by choosing the WiFi model. It just means you have to be connected to WiFi at home (or elsewhere) for internet access. Make sure you choose one with enough storage for how you plan to work. If you want to store everything on your iPad, you may want to upgrade the storage. If you have iCloud storage or can store files on an external hard drive you may not need as much storage. Hope that’s helpful.

    • @JackieHernandezWatercolor
      @JackieHernandezWatercolor  Місяць тому
