Lily's character is central in the story. The heartbeat and soul of the film. She made the right choice and given that she has a stronger narrative to campaign on than Emma (whom I also love), she still has an extremely high chance of winning. I'm glad she didn't sell herself short.
Oh I agree she’s central to the story. I did think she would have a better shot in supporting for sure- but like I said I think it’s awesome she decided to go lead. It’s gonna be one very fierce lineup for best actress in 2024.
Lily Gladstone has nothing to do with which category she will run in. It’s the studios. She doesn’t decide anything.
her character is not the center of the story. lets not kid ourselves.
@@mgariepy42 it has been confirmed that it was her choice to go lead.
@@nafischowdhury7375 you’re right. When asked, she said yes to promoting herself in the BActress category. She didn’t ask for it, she just wanted an indigenous woman to be nommed. Now she is favored to win!
I think her move makes sense for the movie overall too. A part of its narrative is how Scorsese made the effort to consult the Osage and make them more prominent in the story. Very excited to see it! And to see how this all unfolds.
That’s a great point. It’s practically symbolic.
I was quite surprised that this decision was made as I thought Gladstone was the clear front runner to win or sweep Best Supporting Actress. For now, I might keep her as the front runner in Lead Actress. Based on the trailer, it looks like she’s going to give a phenomenal performance. Plus she’s got the narrative too where she almost gave up acting until Scorsese gave her the call and impressed him. I can see this as a two horse race between Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone. Yet another shakeup for this awards season with this and Dune 2 delayed, it’s crazy.
I think with Lily Gladstone, it comes down to pride, which is respectable. So much history of Native Americans being sidelined, I can certainly understand not wanting to be nominated as a supporting character.
She not even a real Native American tho. But she should win just off the act of fooling everyone into thinking she actually is😂
This reminds me of what happened when Michelle Williams went leading for The Fablemans instead of supporting last year when she was considered the frontrunner for best supporting actress when she decided to go leading instead of supporting. Lily Gladstone could get nominated for best actress but the Academy could decide to put her in supporting and not leading. Martin Scorese has a pretty good track record of getting the women in his movies like Lorraine Bracco , Cathy Moriaty and Sharon Stone and of course Cate Blanchett nominated for Oscars and one win for Cate Blanchett. I wish that the nominees list expanded to maybe 8 not 5
8 is a bit too much I think, but the nominees should be extended to 6
Just a small correction: When people say "Michelle decided", she didn't decide anything. The studios decide if they want to push the actors as leading or supporting. It's not up to the actor/actress. Even though they certainly have a debate with them and the directors. But the last call is the call from the producers and studios. In that case Paramount.
In the case of Lily Gladstone it was Apple. And its understandable. They want to have a leading actress nomination instead of a supporting nomination.
Also its important to say that critics from Cannes had the consensus that Lily Gladstone was *definitely* leading. If you check articles there are many of them saying this, and that's why I had Lily Gladstone as Leading in my predictions video. So they certainly had a talk with her, to see if she was ok with going leading, and apparently thats how they all want to be campaigning her. In my opinion its the right choice cause I believe she will win. It's going to be a battle between her and Emma Stone in my opinion.
Honestly theres still a chance that she could win... but, it just seems silly to go for Best Actress, when she had SUCH a great shot at WINNING Best Supporting. Either way, so happy for Gladstone and I cant wait to see the movie ❤
Lily is a supporting actress in this movie. I do not think laying in bed dying for half the movie should win her an Oscar in either category.
I am surprised but not surprised. I kept hearing she could go lead. I wouldn’t rule her out for a win . Emma Stone might be the only locked it ( as much as you can be) but I think Gladstone is probably a near certainty to be nominated. Sometimes best actress isn’t the main focus a history of such winners peppers the the winners list. Patricia Neal in Hud is a prime example with just over twenty minutes of screen time in Hud .
I think she could be the biggest challenge to Emma Stone.
Is Lily supporting or lead not seeing it yet I don’t know but she could be like Michelle Williams, Olivia Colman and Brad Pitt you could make a case for either. I actually like support actress to be up in the air right now.
To be honest I think she has a better chance to win in the lead actress category. Poor Things might be Emma Stone's best performance yet but that doesn't mean much in the eyes of the Academy with so many career defining performances not winning, just look at Cate Blanchett in Tár or Glen Close from Fatal Attraction or Carey Mulligan from Promising Young Woman. Plus with the Academy continuing to diversify, it would be a win to have the first Native American taking home a Best Actress gong in the same vein as having Michelle Yeoh, the first ever Asian actress, winning for Everything, everywhere all at once.
It would be awesome to see her win Best Actress and I think she would be absolutely deserving. It’s gonna be a battle though because we have so many amazing leading lady performances this year. It’s gonna be a very exciting race to watch. X
As always very informative. I especially loved that golden nugget of information at the end regarding the last time all 5 ladies were in a Best Picture nominated film. Very interesting 😎
This is a fantastic move. She is getting nominated and may even win with all the narrative although Stone would be hard to beat. However it worked for Olivia Colman, didn't for Michelle Williams. This puts Mulligan as third and Bening is probably out. Greta Lee is in serious danger of being snubbed. Barino needs to deliver now as Stone, Gladstone, Hüller and Mulligan are probably in. Bening is fighting for that 5th spot although the actress from Monica and Teyana Taylor may return as serious contenders and both have amazing narratives not to mention the actually raves. The race shapes to be Stone VS Gladstone with outside shot for Hüller and Mulligan as I think one of those two can win the drama Globe and from there become the serious threat for the win.
This is such an amazing move by her and her team!
She will now make history and still has a great shot in winning!
This is gonna be a legendary moment for the Oscars!
It’s certainly made both the best actress and supporting actresses races even more interesting. Do you have Gladstone winning in lead? X
@@LukeHearfield yes I do, Apple TV campaigns really well and it would make history
Also, I think you are way too confident on Greta Lee, who is incredible and should be nominated, but could easily be snubbed imo
I could be wrong though
@@RobertBurns71405I agree
Lily could still end up being nominated for SA depending on how the voters feel, correct?
I feel they will push her in the supporting category
CHAOS! CHAOS AROUND THE BOARD!
Hehehehe we are so here for it! 😁 bring on the yummy chaos! X
I support Lily Gladstone's decision to campaign as Best Actress. That would give CRISTAL APARICIO in SOUND OF FREEDOM a better chance to earn the last nomination as Best Supporting Actress.
I LOVE your videos and reviews.. Also such great personality.. Watching from Assam, India ❤️🌺🏵️
Having seen most of these performances, what was the performance you liked most (so not who you think will win)? Or is it too hard to choose.
That is an amazing question. It’s hard to say because I remember being bowled over by Sandra Hüller at Cannes - she was my prediction to win Best Actress there (Gladstone wasn’t eligible cause the film was playing out of competition). But Emma Stone truly shattered my expectations and gave my favourite ever performance from her. It’s tough cause I love my Top 5 so much but gun to my head I could watch Poor Things until the end of time and that’s largely due to stone’s fearless performance. X
Thank you for a great and passionate answer! It really seems like a great year. I haven't seen anyone outside of Margot Robbie myself though, but I am looking forward to see Killers of the Flower Moon and especially Poor Things sounds amazing! But I hope to see all of them eventually!
Great thoughts!
If you check my early predictions video that I made in July, I was predicting Lily Gladstone for Leading. I guess it was lucky of me, but at that time, critics from cannes had the consensus that she was definitely a lead in the movie, and that's why I predicted her as a leading actress, however in gold derby I had her in supporting actress since there was not even a choice to put her in leading. I guess this means that Margot Robbie is not getting a nomination this year (again, unfortunately). I think she was way better in Babylon but I still liked her in Barbie, but yeah, its not happening.
Currently my predictions for leading actress are: Lily Gladstone, Emma Stone, Sandra Huller, Carey Mulligan, Greta Lee.
And for 6th and 7th places I have Fantasia Barrino and Natalie Portman (that is once again absolutely incredible according to the critics circle)
Terrible idea. If they run her for lead it will be because they think being a Native American actor will check the Diversity Clause box and not because her performance was the most outstanding. IMO Emma Stone will take the Oscar. Just seeing the trailers convinces me of that.
It’s all about the narrative, baby. All about the narrative.
I saw this movie and was very impressed with Lily Glasstone!
Absolutely cannot wait to watch this movie in the theater!
I can’t wait to see it again at the LFF in a few weeks time 😄
Luke, having seen the film, what is your estimation of her screen time? 45 minutes? One hour? 90 minutes? Just curious.
She has that mysterious about her. She was def my fav in the movie.
I don't think "she decided". The film studio and maybe Martin Scorsese have decided for her.
Agree! She will do the promotion tour but she has no deciding vote in where she runs.
Damn, poor sandra huller. I hope she gets in for best supporting actress for zone of interest and win
People have been saying Lily is like Michelle Yeoh last year. I really don’t think that’s correct, Michelle Yeoh is a legend with decades of work and legacy. I just don’t think Lily is the same. I do think Emma is still front runner.
It’s important to remember sometimes the actor has less say in how they campaign. Im sure for a newer-to-spotlight actress, Gladstone team (PR, manager) as well as Apple are deciding the best move for her and also their film, but I doubt she was the one that was like “I wanna go as lead”
My 5 supporting actress noms
1. Emily blunt
2. Davine joy Randolph
3. Danielle Brooke’s
4. America ferrera
5. Taraji p Henson
I agree, lead! Loved the movie.
Best Actress is consistently chaos are I’m here for it!!! I do think Lily Gladstone would have an easier path in Supporting but good for her campaigning in lead.
It's actually similar to Sharon Stone in Casino! She originally was being predicted for Supporting but decided to go Leading despite not being the center focus in Scorsese's movie. She managed to win the Golden Globe, at least but the Oscar's chose an overdue veteran in a more prominent central performance (Susan Sarandon). I still think Annette Bening could win! Gladstone really needs for critics groups to pick her for their Best Actress prizes.
I maintain that Stone would have won had she gone Supporting for Casino. I have always considered Ginger to be a Supporting role.
That's a tough one. I love Mira Sorvino's win so much! @@mr29
There's far far more prestige in winning best actress. But also its a sense of honor. We are livibg history with a shot of a Native American winning. But I think Lily is a clear favorite.
Another defeat for category fraud! Glad she's doing the right thing.
You believe she’s without question a lead? I do think she has the luxury of wiggling between both. I’m happy she’s gone lead but think she would’ve had an easier path to history in supporting x
@@LukeHearfieldI know what you said in the video - that her role is a straddler - but she is the female protagonist in the film, no? This gives a proper Supporting performance from the film (Tatoo Cardinal perhaps?) a chance for recognition.
This makes sense this movie is centered around Molly that’s how is set in the book. So I guess she’s going the right way. Also I believe if KOTFM was in competition she would of won actress at canne
My lead actress 5
Emma stone
Sandra hueller
Lily Gladstone
Greta Lee
Fantasia
Also don’t forget Cailee spaeny
What about Carey Mulligan though?
This is great news for Da'Vine Joy Randolph and bad news for Greta Lee and Annette Bening.
I already had them both out anyway. I had Fantasia, Stone, Portman, Robbie and Huller
I have
Lily
Emma
Hueller
Greta
Fantasia
Holy Sacheen LittleFeather Batman! She's going to win! It's too historic not to .
Divine Joy Randolph is the frontrunner now and the perfect place to reward The Holdovers, unless Henson or Brooks deliver in The Color Purple which I've heard is bad and went through many test screenings.
We shall see. It’s certainly opened the supporting actress race up significantly to so many people. I genuinely don’t have a clue who is winning here. By default atm I think it would be Emily Blunt but that could easily change. X
Best actress is gonna be a BLOODBATH!!!! Now supporting actress is up for the taking anyone can win it.
Even though Gladstone campaigns in Lead, can’t the voters place her into Supporting?
You forgot Helen Mirren in Godsa, Alicia Vakandar in Firebrand.
Natalie Portman in May/December reminds me of the gendres of fims from the Annie Hal era so aso another strong contenders.
These minority ethnic races their campaigning is usually fierce. Look at the win of the Best Supporting Actress in West side Story. She campaigned so hard that year. 10:21
Oh yes, there is also Jessica Chastain in Memory. And Amy Adams in All of Us strangers.
I don't think this is just about her personal pride. I think it has a lot to do with the pride of the Native American community. The entire plot of Killer of the Flower Moon and the piece of history that this film is based on is centered around the Osage tribe. It won't do the Osage tribe, the victims of this terrible event, and Ms. Mollie justice if Lily goes for supporting.
Lily Gladstone seems to be one of the frontrunners in either category to be honest
If she was nominated for supporting she wins it easily
Greta lee is more of a film twitter thing. I dont see her getting in. Maybe golden globe but thats it
Eeaao was also seen as a Twitter thing
I agree
I think Lily Gladstone at least has a better chance to win than Michelle Williams last year. Last year, Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh were already so far ahead of the Best Actress race at this point last year, there was no way Michelle Williams could've beaten either of them. Lily Gladstone would at least still be win-competitive in Best Actress.
Mexico is a North American country. Therefore, Yalitza Aparicio is Indigenous American.
I don't see her as a lead in the trailer I've seen. She's more of a quite character and especially a side character. But she might get into leas. But she won't win for sure. It's either Stone, Huller, Lee or Robbie. So in a way this is a huge mistake. She could have easily won Supporting. Well the heart wants what it wants.
I don't think this is a good decision. She was a frontrunner for Supporting.
Interesting- I thought there'd be more rules as to who can be put forward for what. She reminds me of Brie Larson lol
What if carey mulligan puts herself in the supporting category for maestro? 😂😂😂. The gag
😆well, she already tried that with She Said. Nothing's to say she wouldn't do that stunt again.🤣
how much nudity is in the movie
As much as you blink 😳
Devine rudolf joy is gonna win for best supporting actress for the hold overs
