Also ich nutze das Z77 bis heute und die Leistung ist einfach super... Habe hierzu jetz eine PCIe "QNAP QM2-2P410G2T" integriert um der Verbindung mit meiner NAS ein 10 GbE zu verleihen. In diesem Zuge habe ich auf der genannten PCIe Erweiterungskarte 2x "Samsung 990 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD 4 TB" installiert und nach diesem Tutorial darauf das Betriebssystem auf einer davon aufgesetzt. Jedoch NICHT neu installiert, sondern aus der vorherigen SATA SSD migiriert, sitze also vor dem gleichen Desktop wie vorher. Nach dem BIOS Flash ist NICHTS mehr weiter nötig, die Boot-Option per NVME ist sofort verfügbar im UEFI - GANZ WICHTIG, DER USB-STICK MUSS MBR SEIN, KEIN GPT!!! (dies kann per "Rufus" geändert werden). Anders als im Video genannt muss weder ein Schlüssel gelöscht, noch der OS Typ geändert und auch kein CSM auf Auto gestellt werden. Es funktioniert sofort (zumindest in meiner genannten Konfiguration). Diesen Text hier verfasse ich gerade vom frisch gebooteten Betriebssystem der NVMe 🙂
This is a somewhat risky mod solely due to the BIOS aspect, but it's completely worth it. I applied the BIOS mod to my DELL Optiplex 790 and now, along with a good graphics card and its maximum RAM expansion, it's a real beast (it has a Core i7 2600K).
Typically for most, I advise if the PC is functioning properly and you don't have any issues, don't bother with updating the BIOS. However, flashing BIOS is relatively safe today compared to the past. Luckily with things like the Flashback button, if you corrupt a BIOS, you can typically recover from it using that Flashback feature.
If the worst happens you can actually buy replacement, pre-programmed BIOS chips for Asus Z77 and many other MB's (they're socketed not soldered) pretty cheap, c.£$€10-11 including postage in Europe.
That never occurred for me... I thought the BIOS chip on the Sabertooth Z77 was soldered, not socketed! That's really good news for those who accidentally brick the board! Thanks for sharing!
I use for the same MB a USB flash mem that has UEFI bios on it. Then in the MB bios is set to boot from USB. That completes the MB bios. First show a boot menu then boot from NVMI Samsung 970 Evo plus 1GB that has a windows 10.
I have and old mobo (socket 1366) and i am trying to install windows 10 in expansion card with NVME M2 2TB. I received message that : "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure That the disk controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu." Can i bypass this ?
That will work only on motherboards that supports pci-e boot not all old do but if they don't no problem use the boot / efi partition on a internal usb disk and the set the bcd to the new nvme disk

My first build was with the then brand new Intel 4004 processor. I LOVE tinkering with old computers. Clover Bootloader can be used to boot to a PCIe NVMe on almost any old PC that has PCIe 3.0. I've had problems getting it to work right on PCIe 2.0 machines though.
I would saw the Sabertooth Z77 was on the cusp of being modern. It did sport UEFI BIOS at the time! You've got me beat by a few years! I'm older than I look! Approaching 30! My first CPU was an Intel Pentium 166
@@WiltshireTutorials That was an excellent processor. Other than that little single board computer with the 4004, my first real PC build was the Heathkit H-89 with the Zilog Z80 processor. Had to solder on all the components other than the CPU socket, RAM and IDE slots / connectors. EXTREMELY educational. I love building modern PCs- except it takes 100 times the research to pick the perfect parts.

Hi I just tried this and I got to the installation location on windows setup. The windows setup sees the drive but says it can not be installed because the bios can't boot from that drive. I've changed all the settings in your video but still won't allow me to boot from it

Bios flashback doesn't work for me - I've tried multiple usb drives, fat32, mbr, 1 partition etc, tried flashing different official BIOS files with it, but I hold the button, light comes on - doesn't even begin to flash just stays blue. how do I flash otherwise?

I can't seem to figure out how I can flash anything when it doesn't work, unless I use a ch413a programmer or something directly on the chip, because the bios ez flash utility won't accept unsigned bioses.
Strange. It should accept the BIOS that I've linked in the description. Have you tried flashing an older BIOS than the one I linked in the description?

I've investigated the HP Workstations in the pas for this type of thing. Unfortunately, it appears to not be possible for the HP prebuilt machines. You need a BIOS FlashBack feature or similar to make this work. Most prebuilt manufacturers use .exe or programs to update the BIOS.
Awesome trick! I've cloned my Win10 installation from a Crucial SATA SSD to a Kingston M2 NVMe SSD and seems to be working just fine! BUT I was getting around 1500~1600 MB/s speed on M2 NVMe SSD using the original BIOS and now I'm getting just 375 to 407MB/s with this modified one. Double checked TRIM, AHCI and even installed Phison NVMe controller driver, but nothing helped. Btw, the ~1500 speed is what should be expected because I've installed the PCIe adapter on a PCI v2.0 slot, which in theory should hit a max of 2000 MB/s. Do you know if this modified BIOS was based on the last one available from ASUS website (v2104)?
I'm getting full speed out of my NVMe drive using my modified BIOS. If I can remember correctly, it is not based on the latest BIOS from Asus. I don't remember what version I based it off of...
I've found the reason, the PCIEx slot (the black one) was set by defaut at X1 speed, after changing to X4 I've got around 1500MB/s, which it's the expected performance I can get, close to 2GB/s in theory. No that I've noticed a huge increase in Windows 10 loading times (I didn't installed a fresh one).

You're limited by the amount of PCI-E lanes in the motherboard. The dedicated GPU will saturate most of the available lanes in the Z77 chipset. If you want full throughput on the drive, put the NVMe drive in the first (top) PCI-E x16 slot and put the GPU in the 2nd x16 PCI-E slot. GPU performance may be impacted though.

@@WiltshireTutorials The pcie scheme with i7 3770K and Z77 chipset on the MSI Z77MA-G45 mainboard is pcie gen3 1x16 for vga card via cpu and pcie gen3 1x4 via chipset. Means the system meets the requirements to run SSD m.2 nvme. The problem is in the bios there is no nvme boot menu to run it as a boot drive like the next generation mainboard bios. Am I right?
Risky and unnecessary trick. As far as I remember having the bootloader partition on SATA and Drive C on nvme drive worked well for me, same speed without any dangerous bios modes.
Not that risky when you have a flashback button, you know... If the flash doesn't take, just re-flash it using the flashback button. Your method requires 2 drives, which equals more money having to be spent. Not an option for most.
I did the same thing a couple of years ago. I moded the BIOS myself with the help of some forum discussions and i got it to work the same as yours. Although with mine you don't have to delete the Secure Boot, I keep it on UEFI mode. And the CSM is Enabled with First UEFI setting on for Boot from PCIe/PCI Expansion Devices. I select Ignore for Network Devices and Storage Devices after Windows is installed for an even faster boot. I used a Sabrent 512GB Rocket NVMe drive with no issues and it still works today. But there is a thing with this motherboard that you didn't talk about and that people might not know. You can only get maximum speeds if the PCIe slot is running at X16 but that only happens when ony one PCIe slot is populated. So if you install a video card and the NVMe adapter, PCIe Slot 1 and PCIe Slot 2 will only run at X8 maximum, which will bring down the performance of the video card and the speed of the NVMe drive. I got about 2.5Gb/s out of 3.4Gb/s on my drive in this configuration, and i don't know how much the performance of the video card went down because i didn't benchmark it. The third option, and the configuration that i'm curently using, is to have the video card in PCIe Slot number 1 and the NVMe adapter in PCIe Slot number 3. This way i get full performance on the video card but only 1.5Gb/s on the NVMe drive because PCIe Slot 3 is PCI-Express 2.0 and it runs at X4. It's still very fast and it works for now, but i might decide to change it in the future. I got some questions for you though, if you don't mind. I have see you use a Dual PCIe NVMe Adapter, did you ever use two drives at the same time on it? Does this motherboard support PCIe Bifurcation? Or could we get it to support it by modifying the BIOS? PS. You can get this motherboard working even faster with overclocking and high freqency RAM. I have an i7-3770K overclocked at 4.3GHz with 2400MHz Memory and it works brilliantly.
@@jimmcfadden981 I understand the hardship, it took me almost two weeks of trial and error to get it right. But moding the BIOS is not necessarily the hardest part, there are a lot of forum discussions and tools available for it. It's actually updating the motherboard with it that is the tricky part. Our luck is that the Sabertooth Z77 has the offline BIOS flashback button that allows us to bypass any BIOS integrity checks. And this is also a fail safe mechanism because even if something goes wrong we can always use the proper firmware and bring it back to normal. Search for your particular motherboard and see if other people have atempted to mod the BIOS for it, maybe you'll find it already done by someone.
@@Alex.M.S. Well actually, I was trying to flash the bios using the modded bios for this video. Of course, it has been a long time since I have used the flashback button to flash the bios. It became frustrating, as the light would flash three times, and then stay on steady, meaning "sorry not working." Turns out, I was not working (haha) and was using a usb 3.0 stick. When I switched to a usb 2.0 stick, the flashback worked as it should. So the headache went away. Now, the education begins as I try to figure out how to mod a bios.

I ran into the same situation when my BIOS got corrupted because i was pushing the overclocking limits on the CPU to see how far it can go. My motherboard froze with the fans at max speed and a black screen and it would not turn off so i had to shut the PSU off. After that it would not start again and i had to flash the BIOS but i only had a new 60GB exFAT USB Stick and it kept failing until i read that it only works with FAT32 drives. I now have an old 16GB FAT32 USB stick with the moded BIOS on it specifically for this PC. From what i understand, you have the Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard already and that means that you don't need to mod your BIOS, you can get the one from this video's description, put it on a FAT32 stick and just flash it.
@@Alex.M.S. Yeah that is where the problem started. My USB drive was FAT32, however, it was a USB 3.0 drive. The flash kept failing. Switched to a USB 2.0 drive (still FAT32) and the flash took hold, and finally booted the m.2 ssd. I can only assume, that for whatever reason, flashback was not reading the 3.0 stick Have the same issue with Corsair's K63 keyboard. To update the firmware, USB 3.0 is incompatible. Just in general, having like 40 years in computers, you would think I could modify a bios CAP file... but nope.

I installed one in my old HP Z 440 which fortunately had nvme protocol embedded in the bios. I used the HP Turbo pci-e nvme adaptor designed for my system. It's blazing Saddles now. 👍🏾👏🏾
The only issue i see is that you used the 16x slot for the graphics card. Maybe try the other slot to see if you still get that performance. And i know this vid is 7 months old but i just saw it for the first time. Other than that i enjoyed watching.
Good eye! Yes, it would affect the speed of the drive. I used the x16 slot on the board because, at the time, I didn't have a spare GPU on hand that wasn't being used. I also wanted to see if I could get full speeds out of the drive on the Z77 motherboard. If you put it into the x8 slot (the 2nd x16 PCI-E slot), it halves the speeds. Still WAY faster than a SATA SSD, so it's still worth it.
@@WiltshireTutorials the NVME drives I think only wired @x4 speeds, so it wouldn't matter if you plug it in other slots @x4 and up(only x4 negotiated), the only thing that would affect the speed would be if the other slots only support the PCIE 2.0 protocol. For full speed NVME you need PCIE 4.0 @x4 Edit: If you used a sandy bridge CPU, those only support PCIE 2.0 to the PCIE slots regardless.
Great video, congratulations !!! I have a HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF which has a motherboard with a chipset " Q77 express". I installed a NVMe unit to the PCIe port in it and I cloned the ssd unit (with the O.S.) to that NVMe unit. Windows detects the NVMe unit as a secondary disk but the BIOS does not detects it so that I can not choose it as a boot device even thou it is a clone of the ssd. My questions to you are: Where can I find a modded BIOS for my PC ? Could it be in the same place where you found the modded BIOS for your PC ? It´s a pitty that Asus and HP are completely different motherboards so that I can not use the modded BIOS which you share in the description of this video !!! Hmmm, prebuilt PCs are extremely difficult to flash new modded BIOS to. Typically they have some kind of MD5 SUM check on the file to make sure it hasn't been tampered with. Companies, like ASUS, don't have those kinds of checks. They give a little bit more freedom to mess around with things. There may be a modded BIOS out there somewhere. Apparently there is no way to do BIOS modifications to these PCs. But there is a last chance to use the NVMe as the unit with the O.S. and it´s a program called "Clover". I´m reserching about it but it looks like it´s possible. It works like this: You download "Clover" into a bootable USB, then you use this USB as the boot device, when "Clover" opens it gives the posibility to star the PC from the NVMe unit (which contains Windows) in the PCIe port. I don't own that board, so I can't help you per se. I can point you in the right direction though. You'll need to find or make a custom BIOS that allows NVMe support. I suggest looking at some motherboard BIOS forums to see if someone has already modified and shared a BIOS. Also, that board will support a max of PCI-E 3.0 and not 4.0! So, don't expect PCI-E Gen 4.0 speeds, if you get things working.
That's because this video is specific to the Sabertooth Z77. Not the P8Z77 V Pro. Never flash a BIOS designed for a different motherboard. All BIOS are specific to that model of board. I do not own that board so, I cannot make one and test it. I suggest looking on some forums for a member that's already made the custom BIOS

This usually happens when you're trying to make too large or a jump in BIOS firmware versions. Update the BIOS regularly to a newer BIOS and try again Also try disabling Secure Boot
I found the same thing with my motherboard. It's picky with the USB flashdrive you use! I found more success with using a USB2.0 drive instead of a newer 3.0/3.1 drive

No. Not with my guide here as this is specifically for the Asus Sabertooth Z77. I suggest looking on some modding BIOS forums to see if someone has made a modded BIOS for your P8Z77-V
I suggest using the GPU in the top PCI-E x16 slot and the NVMe on the second one. Performance will degrade a little bit for the read and write on the NVMe, but you won't really notice the difference in speed.

There aren't many ways to install a BIOS. Most of them are pretty straight-forward. May I ask how the forum explains installing the BIOS for your motherboard?

I added an Nvme to my old ( also first) 3770k build using a msi z77a-gd65; unfortunately it died recently attempting the Nvme bios mod (for that board) and just so happen to grab this board to get that machine back up and running (until i can reprogram the bios chip). Glad i just so happen to find this board for a great price, now just hope it works.
@@WiltshireTutorials I found out that installing the older chipset and LAN drivers resolved the errors with sleep and wake on lan. I'm mainly getting device metadata errors. Boot errors stopped.

This can happen when you have RAID enabled or Intel Rapid Storage enabled. Try turning both of them off. What could also do, if you're still running into issues is install Windows on the M.2 on another PC and then pop it back in on your Z77 motherboard.

Hmmm, I'm not sure on that one, Paul. Never thought about using RAID with this mod. I imagine the BIOS would allow the usage of it. You may end up having to Software RAID the drives using Disk Management. I'm not sure the Intel RAID utility in the BIOS would work.

No problem, Paul. I'm happy to help! You should be able to migrate your install of Windows. You may run into booting issues when cloning a SATA drive to an NVMe drive though. Some cloning programs will correct this issue for you automatically.
I have 3 in my main Threadripper machine. Love them! Wouldn't use any other M.2 NVMe drive when editing and such. It'll definitely work well for this mod. You may start to approach the bandwidth cap on the PCI-E slot though!

Yup! I've personally tested that SSD myself and it works as well for this. I find that the modded BIOS can be picky with what PCI-E M.2 adapter you use though. Some work, some don't.

No. This is just strictly for the Asus Sabertooth Z77. You may be able to mod it in a similar way. But, the BIOS I've shared is only for the board stated above
Some forums may have a modded BIOS for your board. Typically the BIOS has to be made by hand, like I did for the Z77 Sabertooth. Someone may have already done so and shared it on a forum. Try searching for "Asus H81m CS NVMe BIOS Mod" on Google
hi, i'm brazilian, i have this same motherboard and i recently decided to install a ssd m2 with pcie adapter, but it's giving problems, it doesn't appear as a boot option, i did the BIOS update that you indicated and the option still doesn't appear. however in Windows it is recognized normally and also appears in the windows installation.
The drive may not be found in the boot options, only the Windows Boot Manager will be found. Try unplugging all of the other drives from the PC and have just the NVMe drive installed.

i have this motherboard, an adapter and an nvme drive. guess this video is for me. one i have the cpu fan error coming up with a brand new cpu fan. but more important is , does it have to be in the x16 slot? i have a video card in there.
Is the new CPU cooler fan a 3-pin or 4-pin fan? Sometimes using a 3-pin fan can set off CPU fan warnings due to it not using PWM. You don't have to use the x16 slot at the top. It is recommended to use the NVMe SSD in the largest PCI-E slot for the most bandwidth though.
@@WiltshireTutorials i will check all that out. thanks. was asking about the x16 slot because i have a video card in there. maybe ill move it up. pretty sure its a 4 pin, as of now i just lowered the low fan speed alarm. i keep coming back to this video because i think i followed and it wont boot. i may not have unplugged the other hd and ssd i have in there, both empty and new, when i installed windows. was going to try it all again and see. ill put the adapter in the x8 slot under the video card and make sure all other drives are unplugged and post back when i do it.
This is an error when the BIOS isn't the correct one for the motherboard. The BIOS I made is for the MK1 of the motherboard. They released MK1 and MK2 of the board. Do you have a MK2 of the board? Also check to see if the boot option on your motherboard is set to UEFI instead of legacy

The Flashback button will flash off and on slowly and get faster as the flashing process nears completion. If the button flashes quickly and then stays lit, then there is something wrong with your USB stick. Try a different USB drive. I've found that some USB 3.0 drives will not work with the Flashback button. Try a USB 2.0 drive instead. Make sure that it is formatted in FAT32 as well
If you aren't planning on using the NVMe drive as a boot device, you don't need to install the modded BIOS for the NVMe drive to show up as a secondary drive.
@@WiltshireTutorials hello, me again, I got an NVMe adapter and put it in the second PCIe slot which according to the motherboard manual is also PCIe 3.0 x16, the NVMe I bought is a NVME 1TB ADATA XPG GAMMIX S70 BLADE Gen4, I wanted to use it only for storage so do not modify the BIOS, but when doing the speed test it only reaches 1630.37MB/s reading and 1600.41MB/s writing, I expected it to give me at least 3000MB/s, it will be that I have to update the BIOS so that I can increase the speed of reading or writing? or did I have to have purchased an NVMe Gen 3? When occupying both x16 slots, the second slot will be limited to slower speeds. This is a limitation of the Z77 chipset. You're seeing the correct speeds.
@@demonaz3 the Z77 chipset has limitations to its bandwidth for the x16 slots. One is fullspeed, meanwhile the other is either x4 or x8 in speed. I can't remember which one is which, off the top of my head. Typically, the top most x16 will have the most throughout bandwidth, thus more speed. You probably want to put your GPU in that slot and the NVMe is the second lower x16 slot. It may be slower, but it will not affect your gaming performance.
Yes. The Z77 motherboard only has 1 PCI-E x16 3.0 slot. The rest are 2.0. I personally would stilll put the GPU on the top 3.0 slot and put the SSD in a 2.0 slot. You'll sacrifice a little bit of speed on the SSD, but you'll keep the full performance of the GPU
@@WiltshireTutorials The Sabertooth Z77 has 2 PCIe 3.0 slots: PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2. Those are recommended for dual GPUs but are also best for the PCIe NVME solution. I used PCIE16_1 for GPU and PCIE16_2 for my NVME adapter. Works like a charm. Thanks for your tutorial on this.
So far have not been able to find information that would indicate which I have.... Can only find a Mark 1 and Mark 2 for the Z79 Sabertooth. Asus does not have a Z77 bios version listed for mark 1 or Makr 2; only one file for Z77: 2401.
Perhaps that's the board I'm think of is the Z79. My mistake. I wonder if it has something to do with the current BIOS revision you're currently on? I know I've had a few issues in the past using certain USB sticks. Some don't play nicely with BIOS flashing for some reason.

i'm debating on using an i5 3570k or an i7 3770. got the mobo in 2021 as well. have an empty ssd, and empty hdd in there and want to boot from an nvme. was a boredom build, has just been sitting here.

I`m still using this Z77 and i7-3770K since 2013. Only couple of changes in Drives and Graphics Card. So reliable.
It was a VERY good combo when I first built it. Still holds up today compared to other CPUs. The thing can be overclocked quite a bit too!

Habe hierzu jetz eine PCIe "QNAP QM2-2P410G2T" integriert um der Verbindung mit meiner NAS ein 10 GbE zu verleihen.
In diesem Zuge habe ich auf der genannten PCIe Erweiterungskarte 2x "Samsung 990 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD 4 TB" installiert und nach diesem Tutorial darauf das Betriebssystem auf einer davon aufgesetzt.
Jedoch NICHT neu installiert, sondern aus der vorherigen SATA SSD migiriert, sitze also vor dem gleichen Desktop wie vorher.
Nach dem BIOS Flash ist NICHTS mehr weiter nötig, die Boot-Option per NVME ist sofort verfügbar im UEFI - GANZ WICHTIG, DER USB-STICK MUSS MBR SEIN, KEIN GPT!!! (dies kann per "Rufus" geändert werden).
Anders als im Video genannt muss weder ein Schlüssel gelöscht, noch der OS Typ geändert und auch kein CSM auf Auto gestellt werden.
Es funktioniert sofort (zumindest in meiner genannten Konfiguration).

This is a somewhat risky mod solely due to the BIOS aspect, but it's completely worth it. I applied the BIOS mod to my DELL Optiplex 790 and now, along with a good graphics card and its maximum RAM expansion, it's a real beast (it has a Core i7 2600K).
Typically for most, I advise if the PC is functioning properly and you don't have any issues, don't bother with updating the BIOS. However, flashing BIOS is relatively safe today compared to the past. Luckily with things like the Flashback button, if you corrupt a BIOS, you can typically recover from it using that Flashback feature.

If the worst happens you can actually buy replacement, pre-programmed BIOS chips for Asus Z77 and many other MB's (they're socketed not soldered) pretty cheap, c.£$€10-11 including postage in Europe.

I still use my Asus Maximus V Extreme and my OCed 3770K (4,5 GHz and LM/delid mod). It's a marvel.

Can a previously saved Windows Image Backup, i.e. Windows install (from an HDD/SSD) be restored to the nVME?
You should have no issues with transferring the image to your new M.2 SSD.
if you insert another NVME SSD on that EXDIY-FAB, can this method read and support all slots on Z77 single PCIe?
The second slot on the adapter is for SATA M.2 SSDs only. It's not an NVMe slot. So, it shouldn't saturate PCI-E lanes

I use for the same MB a USB flash mem that has UEFI bios on it. Then in the MB bios is set to boot from USB. That completes the MB bios. First show a boot menu then boot from NVMI Samsung 970 Evo plus 1GB that has a windows 10.
I have and old mobo (socket 1366) and i am trying to install windows 10 in expansion card with NVME M2 2TB. I received message that :
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure That the disk controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu."

You need to flash a modded BIOS to your motherboard, if it supports it. NVMe boot was not a common thing until Z97 motherboards.
That will work only on motherboards that supports pci-e boot not all old do but if they don't no problem use the boot / efi partition on a internal usb disk and the set the bcd to the new nvme disk

My first build was with the then brand new Intel 4004 processor. I LOVE tinkering with old computers. Clover Bootloader can be used to boot to a PCIe NVMe on almost any old PC that has PCIe 3.0. I've had problems getting it to work right on PCIe 2.0 machines though.
I would saw the Sabertooth Z77 was on the cusp of being modern. It did sport UEFI BIOS at the time! You've got me beat by a few years! I'm older than I look! Approaching 30! My first CPU was an Intel Pentium 166

Had to solder on all the components other than the CPU socket, RAM and IDE slots / connectors. EXTREMELY educational. I love building modern PCs- except it takes 100 times the research to pick the perfect parts.

Hi I just tried this and I got to the installation location on windows setup. The windows setup sees the drive but says it can not be installed because the bios can't boot from that drive. I've changed all the settings in your video but still won't allow me to boot from it

Bios flashback doesn't work for me - I've tried multiple usb drives, fat32, mbr, 1 partition etc, tried flashing different official BIOS files with it, but I hold the button, light comes on - doesn't even begin to flash just stays blue. how do I flash otherwise?
Are you naming the file correctly? Are you putting the BIOS on the root directory of the flash drive.

I can't seem to figure out how I can flash anything when it doesn't work, unless I use a ch413a programmer or something directly on the chip, because the bios ez flash utility won't accept unsigned bioses.

I've investigated the HP Workstations in the pas for this type of thing. Unfortunately, it appears to not be possible for the HP prebuilt machines. You need a BIOS FlashBack feature or similar to make this work. Most prebuilt manufacturers use .exe or programs to update the BIOS.
Awesome trick! I've cloned my Win10 installation from a Crucial SATA SSD to a Kingston M2 NVMe SSD and seems to be working just fine! BUT I was getting around 1500~1600 MB/s speed on M2 NVMe SSD using the original BIOS and now I'm getting just 375 to 407MB/s with this modified one. Double checked TRIM, AHCI and even installed Phison NVMe controller driver, but nothing helped.
Btw, the ~1500 speed is what should be expected because I've installed the PCIe adapter on a PCI v2.0 slot, which in theory should hit a max of 2000 MB/s.
Do you know if this modified BIOS was based on the last one available from ASUS website (v2104)?
I'm getting full speed out of my NVMe drive using my modified BIOS. If I can remember correctly, it is not based on the latest BIOS from Asus. I don't remember what version I based it off of...
I've found the reason, the PCIEx slot (the black one) was set by defaut at X1 speed, after changing to X4 I've got around 1500MB/s, which it's the expected performance I can get, close to 2GB/s in theory. No that I've noticed a huge increase in Windows 10 loading times (I didn't installed a fresh one).

Hello, really cool video it's been a while but I saw the video recently and did exactly the same thing, only with a different adapter and I have the 970 evo plus 2T, but I can only achieve 1630mb read and 1530mb write, I don't know what to do next
You're limited by the amount of PCI-E lanes in the motherboard. The dedicated GPU will saturate most of the available lanes in the Z77 chipset. If you want full throughput on the drive, put the NVMe drive in the first (top) PCI-E x16 slot and put the GPU in the 2nd x16 PCI-E slot. GPU performance may be impacted though.

No. Unfortunately, this is motherboard specific. There is probably a modded BIOS on a few forums that you could flash to enable NVMe support though!

After updating to the modded bios my PC gets stuck on the "hit f2 or del to enter bios" splash screen, anyone know why?
Try removing all connected drives and USB devices from the PC and try again. Possible that the BIOS isn't liking a particular device

Means the system meets the requirements to run SSD m.2 nvme. The problem is in the bios there is no nvme boot menu to run it as a boot drive like the next generation mainboard bios. Am I right?

Risky and unnecessary trick. As far as I remember having the bootloader partition on SATA and Drive C on nvme drive worked well for me, same speed without any dangerous bios modes.
Not that risky when you have a flashback button, you know... If the flash doesn't take, just re-flash it using the flashback button. Your method requires 2 drives, which equals more money having to be spent. Not an option for most.
I did the same thing a couple of years ago. I moded the BIOS myself with the help of some forum discussions and i got it to work the same as yours. Although with mine you don't have to delete the Secure Boot, I keep it on UEFI mode. And the CSM is Enabled with First UEFI setting on for Boot from PCIe/PCI Expansion Devices. I select Ignore for Network Devices and Storage Devices after Windows is installed for an even faster boot. I used a Sabrent 512GB Rocket NVMe drive with no issues and it still works today.
But there is a thing with this motherboard that you didn't talk about and that people might not know. You can only get maximum speeds if the PCIe slot is running at X16 but that only happens when ony one PCIe slot is populated.
So if you install a video card and the NVMe adapter, PCIe Slot 1 and PCIe Slot 2 will only run at X8 maximum, which will bring down the performance of the video card and the speed of the NVMe drive. I got about 2.5Gb/s out of 3.4Gb/s on my drive in this configuration, and i don't know how much the performance of the video card went down because i didn't benchmark it.
The third option, and the configuration that i'm curently using, is to have the video card in PCIe Slot number 1 and the NVMe adapter in PCIe Slot number 3. This way i get full performance on the video card but only 1.5Gb/s on the NVMe drive because PCIe Slot 3 is PCI-Express 2.0 and it runs at X4. It's still very fast and it works for now, but i might decide to change it in the future.
I got some questions for you though, if you don't mind. I have see you use a Dual PCIe NVMe Adapter, did you ever use two drives at the same time on it? Does this motherboard support PCIe Bifurcation? Or could we get it to support it by modifying the BIOS?
PS. You can get this motherboard working even faster with overclocking and high freqency RAM. I have an i7-3770K overclocked at 4.3GHz with 2400MHz Memory and it works brilliantly.

@@jimmcfadden981 I understand the hardship, it took me almost two weeks of trial and error to get it right. But moding the BIOS is not necessarily the hardest part, there are a lot of forum discussions and tools available for it. It's actually updating the motherboard with it that is the tricky part. Our luck is that the Sabertooth Z77 has the offline BIOS flashback button that allows us to bypass any BIOS integrity checks. And this is also a fail safe mechanism because even if something goes wrong we can always use the proper firmware and bring it back to normal.
Search for your particular motherboard and see if other people have atempted to mod the BIOS for it, maybe you'll find it already done by someone.
@@Alex.M.S. Well actually, I was trying to flash the bios using the modded bios for this video. Of course, it has been a long time since I have used the flashback button to flash the bios. It became frustrating, as the light would flash three times, and then stay on steady, meaning "sorry not working." Turns out, I was not working (haha) and was using a usb 3.0 stick. When I switched to a usb 2.0 stick, the flashback worked as it should. So the headache went away. Now, the education begins as I try to figure out how to mod a bios.

I ran into the same situation when my BIOS got corrupted because i was pushing the overclocking limits on the CPU to see how far it can go. My motherboard froze with the fans at max speed and a black screen and it would not turn off so i had to shut the PSU off. After that it would not start again and i had to flash the BIOS but i only had a new 60GB exFAT USB Stick and it kept failing until i read that it only works with FAT32 drives. I now have an old 16GB FAT32 USB stick with the moded BIOS on it specifically for this PC.
From what i understand, you have the Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard already and that means that you don't need to mod your BIOS, you can get the one from this video's description, put it on a FAT32 stick and just flash it.
@@Alex.M.S. Yeah that is where the problem started. My USB drive was FAT32, however, it was a USB 3.0 drive. The flash kept failing. Switched to a USB 2.0 drive (still FAT32) and the flash took hold, and finally booted the m.2 ssd. I can only assume, that for whatever reason, flashback was not reading the 3.0 stick Have the same issue with Corsair's K63 keyboard. To update the firmware, USB 3.0 is incompatible. Just in general, having like 40 years in computers, you would think I could modify a bios CAP file... but nope.
This is an amazing upgrade. Finally got around to completing it. 14 seconds... from pressing the power button to being on. I even went for the 2tb edition. Thank you so much.

I installed one in my old HP Z 440 which fortunately had nvme protocol embedded in the bios. I used the HP Turbo pci-e nvme adaptor designed for my system. It's blazing Saddles now. 👍🏾👏🏾

The only issue i see is that you used the 16x slot for the graphics card. Maybe try the other slot to see if you still get that performance. And i know this vid is 7 months old but i just saw it for the first time. Other than that i enjoyed watching.
Good eye! Yes, it would affect the speed of the drive. I used the x16 slot on the board because, at the time, I didn't have a spare GPU on hand that wasn't being used. I also wanted to see if I could get full speeds out of the drive on the Z77 motherboard. If you put it into the x8 slot (the 2nd x16 PCI-E slot), it halves the speeds. Still WAY faster than a SATA SSD, so it's still worth it.
@@WiltshireTutorials the NVME drives I think only wired @x4 speeds, so it wouldn't matter if you plug it in other slots @x4 and up(only x4 negotiated), the only thing that would affect the speed would be if the other slots only support the PCIE 2.0 protocol. For full speed NVME you need PCIE 4.0 @x4
Edit: If you used a sandy bridge CPU, those only support PCIE 2.0 to the PCIE slots regardless.

I have a HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF which has a motherboard with a chipset " Q77 express".
I installed a NVMe unit to the PCIe port in it and I cloned the ssd unit (with the O.S.) to that NVMe unit.
Windows detects the NVMe unit as a secondary disk but the BIOS does not detects it so that I can not choose it as a boot device even thou it is a clone of the ssd.
My questions to you are: Where can I find a modded BIOS for my PC ? Could it be in the same place where you found the modded BIOS for your PC ?
It´s a pitty that Asus and HP are completely different motherboards so that I can not use the modded BIOS which you share in the description of this video !!!

Hmmm, prebuilt PCs are extremely difficult to flash new modded BIOS to. Typically they have some kind of MD5 SUM check on the file to make sure it hasn't been tampered with. Companies, like ASUS, don't have those kinds of checks. They give a little bit more freedom to mess around with things. There may be a modded BIOS out there somewhere. Apparently there is no way to do BIOS modifications to these PCs. But there is a last chance to use the NVMe as the unit with the O.S. and it´s a program called "Clover". I´m reserching about it but it looks like it´s possible. It works like this: You download "Clover" into a bootable USB, then you use this USB as the boot device, when "Clover" opens it gives the posibility to star the PC from the NVMe unit (which contains Windows) in the PCIe port. I don't own that board, so I can't help you per se. I can point you in the right direction though. You'll need to find or make a custom BIOS that allows NVMe support. I suggest looking at some motherboard BIOS forums to see if someone has already modified and shared a BIOS. Also, that board will support a max of PCI-E 3.0 and not 4.0! So, don't expect PCI-E Gen 4.0 speeds, if you get things working.

That's because this video is specific to the Sabertooth Z77. Not the P8Z77 V Pro. Never flash a BIOS designed for a different motherboard. All BIOS are specific to that model of board. I do not own that board so, I cannot make one and test it. I suggest looking on some forums for a member that's already made the custom BIOS

i can not boot my nvme pcie i see many videos they show something about clover, but that clover is not some short way just too long with too many changes,, do u know some clover without complication? a bit shorter like install not doing way too much work on it
There are no shortcuts. It's either taking the time to setup clover correctly or you flash a modded BIOS to the motherboard to allow NVMe booting.

This usually happens when you're trying to make too large or a jump in BIOS firmware versions. Update the BIOS regularly to a newer BIOS and try again
Also try disabling Secure Boot

I found the same thing with my motherboard. It's picky with the USB flashdrive you use! I found more success with using a USB2.0 drive instead of a newer 3.0/3.1 drive

Will the bios mod work with my asus p8z77-v lx? I want to use nvme but if this fail i cant no longer get a z77 motherboard because in my country z series motherboard are very rare 😅
No. Not with my guide here as this is specifically for the Asus Sabertooth Z77. I suggest looking on some modding BIOS forums to see if someone has made a modded BIOS for your P8Z77-V
if we use the nvme,, can we use vga card ? because firs slot u put with nvme,, with second port will vga performance down ?
I suggest using the GPU in the top PCI-E x16 slot and the NVMe on the second one. Performance will degrade a little bit for the read and write on the NVMe, but you won't really notice the difference in speed.

There aren't many ways to install a BIOS. Most of them are pretty straight-forward. May I ask how the forum explains installing the BIOS for your motherboard?

Meanwhile, your PCIe 3.0 GPU won't like the fact that you steal some PCIe lanes for the NVMe when you're gaming...
The Z77 chipset has 32 lanes... It'll be fine.

I suggest asking on some BIOS modding forums instead. I don't own any other Z77 motherboards, so I can't mess around with BIOS modding for that board.

No. Just strictly the Asus Sabertooth Z77
I added an Nvme to my old ( also first) 3770k build using a msi z77a-gd65; unfortunately it died recently attempting the Nvme bios mod (for that board) and just so happen to grab this board to get that machine back up and running (until i can reprogram the bios chip).
Glad i just so happen to find this board for a great price, now just hope it works.

Tempted to try the pci bifurcation mod along with this... best use that slot to its fullest if you have to give it up.

That's strange. What version of Windows are you using and what BIOS version are you running? Are you running the one I modded?
@@WiltshireTutorials I found out that installing the older chipset and LAN drivers resolved the errors with sleep and wake on lan. I'm mainly getting device metadata errors. Boot errors stopped.
@@vyechi I'm glad you made some progress with figuring things out! That issues sounds similar to what AMD had with sleep. Took them years to figure it out with their chipset drivers.
Thanks for the video, I follow the steps, flash the BIOS with Z77T, change setting in the BIOS, get into the USB key Windows 10 installation, then the installation said "Windows can't be installed on drive 0 partition 1, I had the same version of BIOS as yours, anyone run into the same trouble before ? This can happen when you have RAID enabled or Intel Rapid Storage enabled. Try turning both of them off. What could also do, if you're still running into issues is install Windows on the M.2 on another PC and then pop it back in on your Z77 motherboard.

Anyway to use RAID with multiple SSD's for redundancy? Not sure if you used two PCI slots with two SSD's if the BIOS would allow it???
Hmmm, I'm not sure on that one, Paul. Never thought about using RAID with this mod. I imagine the BIOS would allow the usage of it. You may end up having to Software RAID the drives using Disk Management. I'm not sure the Intel RAID utility in the BIOS would work.

You should be able to migrate your install of Windows. You may run into booting issues when cloning a SATA drive to an NVMe drive though. Some cloning programs will correct this issue for you automatically.

I have 3 in my main Threadripper machine. Love them! Wouldn't use any other M.2 NVMe drive when editing and such. It'll definitely work well for this mod. You may start to approach the bandwidth cap on the PCI-E slot though!

Yup! I've personally tested that SSD myself and it works as well for this. I find that the modded BIOS can be picky with what PCI-E M.2 adapter you use though. Some work, some don't.

You can run a SATA SSD with the mod. Kinda defeats the purpose of flashing the modded BIOS, if you're not going to use NVMe as your boot drive though.

@@SvenKaufmann1986 Again, if you're not using NVMe for a boot drive, don't bother modding the BIOS. You don't need to mod anything, if you're just using an M.2 for additional storage.

No. This is just strictly for the Asus Sabertooth Z77. You may be able to mod it in a similar way. But, the BIOS I've shared is only for the board stated above

Some forums may have a modded BIOS for your board. Typically the BIOS has to be made by hand, like I did for the Z77 Sabertooth. Someone may have already done so and shared it on a forum. Try searching for "Asus H81m CS NVMe BIOS Mod" on Google
hi, i'm brazilian, i have this same motherboard and i recently decided to install a ssd m2 with pcie adapter, but it's giving problems, it doesn't appear as a boot option, i did the BIOS update that you indicated and the option still doesn't appear. however in Windows it is recognized normally and also appears in the windows installation.
I found that it can be picky with some PCI-E adapters. Also what brand of M.2 SSD are you using?
@@WiltshireTutorials It's a Kingspec NX -256 M.2 NVMe PCIe. it is recognized in disk manager but not in boot options
The drive may not be found in the boot options, only the Windows Boot Manager will be found. Try unplugging all of the other drives from the PC and have just the NVMe drive installed.

i have this motherboard, an adapter and an nvme drive. guess this video is for me. one i have the cpu fan error coming up with a brand new cpu fan. but more important is , does it have to be in the x16 slot? i have a video card in there.
Is the new CPU cooler fan a 3-pin or 4-pin fan? Sometimes using a 3-pin fan can set off CPU fan warnings due to it not using PWM. You don't have to use the x16 slot at the top. It is recommended to use the NVMe SSD in the largest PCI-E slot for the most bandwidth though.
@@WiltshireTutorials i will check all that out. thanks. was asking about the x16 slot because i have a video card in there. maybe ill move it up. pretty sure its a 4 pin, as of now i just lowered the low fan speed alarm. i keep coming back to this video because i think i followed and it wont boot. i may not have unplugged the other hd and ssd i have in there, both empty and new, when i installed windows. was going to try it all again and see. ill put the adapter in the x8 slot under the video card and make sure all other drives are unplugged and post back when i do it.
Have a new cmos battery, figured it wasn't saving. In the next couple days I will be trying it out

This is an error when the BIOS isn't the correct one for the motherboard. The BIOS I made is for the MK1 of the motherboard. They released MK1 and MK2 of the board. Do you have a MK2 of the board?
Also check to see if the boot option on your motherboard is set to UEFI instead of legacy

I did the BIOS flashback and it blinked rapidly amd the USB stick lit up but then the blue flashback button stayed lit. Am I doing something wrong ?
The Flashback button will flash off and on slowly and get faster as the flashing process nears completion. If the button flashes quickly and then stays lit, then there is something wrong with your USB stick. Try a different USB drive. I've found that some USB 3.0 drives will not work with the Flashback button. Try a USB 2.0 drive instead. Make sure that it is formatted in FAT32 as well

Thanks for the video, one question, to place the NVMe as a secondary disk, you also have to apply the BIOS MOD for it to be detected?
If you aren't planning on using the NVMe drive as a boot device, you don't need to install the modded BIOS for the NVMe drive to show up as a secondary drive.

@@WiltshireTutorials hello, me again, I got an NVMe adapter and put it in the second PCIe slot which according to the motherboard manual is also PCIe 3.0 x16, the NVMe I bought is a NVME 1TB ADATA XPG GAMMIX S70 BLADE Gen4, I wanted to use it only for storage so do not modify the BIOS, but when doing the speed test it only reaches 1630.37MB/s reading and 1600.41MB/s writing, I expected it to give me at least 3000MB/s, it will be that I have to update the BIOS so that I can increase the speed of reading or writing? or did I have to have purchased an NVMe Gen 3?
I already tried 2 different NVMe adapters and it's the same result.

When occupying both x16 slots, the second slot will be limited to slower speeds. This is a limitation of the Z77 chipset. You're seeing the correct speeds.

@@demonaz3 the Z77 chipset has limitations to its bandwidth for the x16 slots. One is fullspeed, meanwhile the other is either x4 or x8 in speed. I can't remember which one is which, off the top of my head. Typically, the top most x16 will have the most throughout bandwidth, thus more speed. You probably want to put your GPU in that slot and the NVMe is the second lower x16 slot. It may be slower, but it will not affect your gaming performance.

Yes. The Z77 motherboard only has 1 PCI-E x16 3.0 slot. The rest are 2.0. I personally would stilll put the GPU on the top 3.0 slot and put the SSD in a 2.0 slot. You'll sacrifice a little bit of speed on the SSD, but you'll keep the full performance of the GPU

@@WiltshireTutorials The Sabertooth Z77 has 2 PCIe 3.0 slots: PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2. Those are recommended for dual GPUs but are also best for the PCIe NVME solution. I used PCIE16_1 for GPU and PCIE16_2 for my NVME adapter. Works like a charm. Thanks for your tutorial on this.

Using bios flashback, with downloaded modded bios file (Z77ST,) it is a no go. Repeat: the mobo will not take the bios flash.
Are you using a Mark 1 or a Mark 2. This is only for the Mark 1.

So far have not been able to find information that would indicate which I have.... Can only find a Mark 1 and Mark 2 for the Z79 Sabertooth. Asus does not have a Z77 bios version listed for mark 1 or Makr 2; only one file for Z77: 2401.
Perhaps that's the board I'm think of is the Z79. My mistake. I wonder if it has something to do with the current BIOS revision you're currently on? I know I've had a few issues in the past using certain USB sticks. Some don't play nicely with BIOS flashing for some reason.
@@WiltshireTutorials Roger that. Am currently on bios version 2401, which is the latest "official" release from ASUS for the Z77. However, my flashback procedure was not correct (it has been a long time since used flashback) so am waiting to see if it works this time around.
You could do a build with it with the nvme ssd , would bring new life to the i7 3770k ( im using it in 2022 got it in 2021 great cpu)

i'm debating on using an i5 3570k or an i7 3770. got the mobo in 2021 as well. have an empty ssd, and empty hdd in there and want to boot from an nvme. was a boredom build, has just been sitting here.

You could update to this BIOS and figure out the NMVe later. It functions as a normal BIOS. So you should be good to go
